for me, it was all about the atmosphere of the 2013 game; so beautiful but subtly hostile and ominous when you look closer. there was always something tragic about it, a mood set immediately as soon as you see the coastline littered with downed planes and ships from all eras. it's something that the next 2 games, as much as i may have enjoyed them and as advanced as they were, failed to replicate

Also.. for me not owning console these games scratch an itch of the action adventure genre.
The character psychological evolution in all games and comics is interesting, more grounded, take itself seriously and frankly i don't mind a less "charismatic" lead if the story take itself seriously..
The starlord/thor/deadpool/ironman funnyahahalead gets repetitive quickly.
But the game have flaws mainly story and lack of side characters..
But also tomb raider was always only Lara.. soo baby steps

@@andrews.5212 Did you say “no consoles”? I get the allure of playing games on a PC but I’ll never get sitting in front of your PC for every gaming experience.
Maybe it’s because I was born in the 80s and my great awakening was playing on a shitty carpet 3 feet away from my 20 inch television but I still don’t get it. Especially now with how modern consoles are basically matching what PCs can do. Plus even with awesome monitors, you’re never playing games on a 70 inch 4K set up.
Sorry, total tangent. I just tried the PC route and it made me feel like gaming was more a job than a hobby. Maybe it’s because sitting in front of a PC is part of my job but any time I can get away from those fucking operating systems I’m relieved.

But what's interesting is most of the people we killed in the game, didn't actually count as canon, only the ones we saw Lara directly deal with, that's why they titled it as a survivor is born. because it's not the just the people, but finding a way to get off the island and make it is what really what it was about. so Rise is really about Lara stepping out of her shadow, but she didn't go crazy like people thought.

"One side wants to kill one person to save thousands and the other side decides to kill thousands to save one". This truly would have made for an interesting point, and I also believe this would fit quite a lot with the character of Lara Croft from older Core games. She is honestly quite a mean and self centric person in some of those. The old Lara would definatly kill those she doesn't like in order to further her own goals/save her friends.

I just recently played Shadow of the Tomb Raider for the first time, years after I had played the first and second game of the survivor trilogy. And something that got very clear to me is just: these games are just really, really fun. I don't think that they are telling the best or most memorable stories, but it just feels good to play, explore and do all that. Also the more horror-ish elements that these games do, they do somewhat exceptionally well in my opinion. If this trilogy would have actually been a Survival Horror Trilogy, I think it would have been really good.
Playing the third installment, now more grown up and with a better understanding of games, their mechanics and a better judgement therefore (I believe), I really wanted to revisit the entire trilogy again. To have a look again at all games and not just the third.

Something I realised in the first game of the reboot, when people say, "there's not much tomb raiding here" You need to understand, the whole freaking island was technically a tomb! almost everywhere you looked, you could find elements from different time periods. Long dead corpses! Ruins and artifacts from many different points in history! If that doesn't qualify as a tomb, I don't know what does!

I think it’s more so that the challenging puzzles with fun platforming ended up being a very small slice of this game. Because you’re right about Yamatai, it’s completely covered in relics and dead bodies over the span of many centuries.

@@lamricelo Exactly! I'm somewhat surprised that not many others have come to this conclusion. I've watched a lot of reviews for this game, all of which have the same complaint that "Tomb Raider dosen't involve much tomb raiding" but once you realise that the entire island of Yamatai itself is a tomb, it all starts to make sense. Well in my opinion anyway ^_^

Actually, Uncharted borrowed a LOT more from the LAU trilogy than you remember. Certain puzzles from UC4 amd Lost Legacy were heavily influenced by TR Underworld (2008). Ledge climbing and the use of the grappling hook were in the original TRs first as well as in TR Legend (2006). And UC straight up copied the climbing of vertical craggy walls from TR 2013. And use of vehicles has been in TR games since the TR2 so it isnt anything new if its brought back to future TR games.

Apparently he was added after Rhianna Pratchett was told that she couldn't make Lara lesbian as she wanted, and was ordered to put a male love-interest. I don't know how true this is but it would explain why the character it's so weird and wormy, like as if the character was put under duress.

Speaking of deaths... Light spoiler if you don't wanna know ahead of seeing it.
I think the most messed up one is if you die while you're hung upside down in that one segment. The enemies will come to Lara's body and slit her throat to make sure she's actually dead.
Watching a character die in a game is one thing... but to see a character you play as die and then have their death visually confirmed afterward like that is something you don't really see in games and it makes me feel a sense of shock and disbelief since the protagonist is meant to be alive unless the story says otherwise.

I don't think I'd love gaming as much as I do if I hadn't played Uncharted when I did. But Tomb Raider is so good too. They are two of my favorite Action-Adventure series and will always hold a place in my small black heart.

    • @vengeance1450

Yeah, Nathan Drake just has that charm about him that Lara doesn't. I like her but she never tells jokes, is always serious, and sometimes doesn't seem like she cares about others except herself. Plus the story in the Tomb Raider games are not memorable at all, except for Lara and Jonah, I could not name you one other character from any of the games. But with Uncharted, I could name pretty much every character since they were either unique or cool. Another thing is the final "boss" fights. In Uncharted all the boss fights are very good and memorable. Especially 4s fight with Rafe, that is my favorite fight scene in any game or media at all. But the Tomb Raider boss fights were so bland and kind of like any other enemy just slightly stronger. Only one that was sort of fun was Rise of the Tomb Raiders boss fight since it wasn't just a head on attack and you have to use stealth, it reminded me in The Last of Us when you have to fight David as Ellie. Anyway sorry for rambling on so much, I just love Uncharted and thought I'd give my intake as well.

@@vengeance1450 I actually much prefer and Lara and dislike Nate a lot when I played Uncharted. Nathan is lound, annoying and never shuts up. I prefer characters who are quiet and don't run their mouth off like the kid in class who thinks they're really smart and better than the teacher. Nathan pretty much made me lose all the stakes in the game since he was always so loud and chatty and at one point during U4 I shouted SHUT UP at my TV and my sister laughed cus I was so angry. Playing the game I was like it prbably doesn't matter cus he's probably going to make it out fine with thise upbeat feeling and probably die with a smile as he tells annoying cringe jokes.

I've never understood the Mary Sue accusation. It's a very selectively played card. If Lara is a "Mary Sue" because she doesn't end up becoming a paraplegic or dying of septic shock by the end of chapter 2, then what is Nathan Drake? Just an action hero? I mean sure, Nathan grew up on the streets where he developed some inexplicable parkour abilities, but none of that helps you fight helicopter gunships, well armed paramilitary and artillery etc. nor escape vertical trains ... unless you're an action hero.
And anyway, Lara has had a lifetime of archery lessons, and it's pretty clear she's had training as a climber. I would also wager she's had a lot of horse riding lessons. Gymnastics. Maybe martial arts too. It's a pretty easy thing to get.
And yes, she kills a lot of people by the end of the game, but it's also an action game ... what else is she going to do? Nathan is a veritable mass murderer by the end of his first game. Yet no one bats an eyelid. One thing's for sure, Nathan never shows an ounce of shock or remorse at the carnage he causes. :/

    • @ThatBoyAqua
      @ThatBoyAqua  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

That’s my bad I wasn’t trying to say she’s a Mary Sue, and I don’t think she is. It’s her fault they ended up on the island and she makes plenty of mistakes which refute any arguments of that IMO.
Regarding her killing ability it strikes me as a ludonarrative dissonance more than anything else and that has never bothered me in either this game or Uncharted. Her adept surviving abilities are expanded upon in audio logs that explain her and Roth did a lot of exploring together prior to the events of the game.

was interesting to see your perspected on this. because yea from this game it looks like a nathan clone. but if you look at the originals you can see they made it look more like farcry then anything. The originals had great puzzles. and lovable characters. even the movies were fun. so it was interesting to see your style. I watch the hole thing and it was a good interesting review :) lovely view of the ending video ^^

The multiplayer was actually quite fun and active back in 2013. Basically CTF, deathmatch and elimination game modes. It lacked a lot of shooting finesse, just like the singleplayer. So it devolved into blindfiring jump spam really fast. Good bow snipers were extremely OP, though.

As a person who has nostalgia for the older games mainly the first 3 and maybe 4th
I really enjoyed the reboot I found it refreshing to see a progression from unsure green hat to a bad ass
And sure the first reboot has some issues but over all I would play it again easily same gose for second one despite the Laras drastic mode change from 1 to 2.
However it's all stops there the 3rd instalment, is bad I don't like it feel like a cheap knock off and it's a shame to

same thing here, and i really want them to ditch the "serious" Lara and go back to the charismatic/badass/adventurous Lara like in the old games

Curious how you felt about the Tomb Raider film which clearly borrowed it's plot mainly from this game, and in my opinion is one of the few good video game movie adaptations. While it too borrowed from the Uncharted games to some extent, I believe it's a better Tomb Raider film than the two previous entries although I don't understand why filmmakers have such a hard time realizing that a Lara Croft adventure is basically no different than a good Indiana Jones film except set in a modern time without Nazis.

I will be honest... i did not thought that a shot of Lara Bust would automaticly spell out Tomb Raider for me but your Minature for the video sure as hell did... I guess extra points to you :P

If they made a true metroidvania style Tomb Raider game, I'd empty my pockets and fill my loins asap.
