Honestly, this was heart breaking to watch. For a country that has accelerated its space program primarily in the last 10 years this was more of a win than a loss. But watching their cheers turn into puzzled faces of disbelief was difficult. What the U.S. folks tend to forget, or weren't even alive for, was how many, many failures we went through before getting anything right. India is a country full of super smart people. Just give them time. And they'll be landing on that hunk of green cheese before you know it.

Actually now it's located and found 500 metres away from actual landing site and ISRO confirmed it had a hard landing but the vikram lander is in one piece and completely intact since rover is inside the lander ISRO is working to establish connection with it. Plz make a video on latest information available

They already did with their first mission - Chandrayaan 1. The satellite threw an impact probe over near the South Pole of the Moon, which is how we were able to prove that Moon indeed has water.

This mission 🚀consisted of the Orbiter 🛰️(with 7-7.5 years of life span) and lander(Vikram) + rover(Pragyan) with 14 days of life span. Orbiter 🛰️ is orbiting around the moon 🌒 and will keep scanning and sending photos of moon surface for next 7-7.5 years. Although , ISRO lost contact from lander Vikram but still this mission has achieved it's 95% of it's initial objectives. Btw , lander has been found using Orbiter and ISRO is still trying to contact with it . Btw , Soft landing is really a complex task and to land rover on dark side of moon where no country hasn't reached yet was surely a difficult task but ISRO still tried it's best , So .. Cheer up , There is no failure in Science.

My analysis: There are four sections of propulsion engine inside the Vikram Lander which were supposed to be * turned off* (except one) during rough braking phase/stage of 10 minutes to get deceleration of the speed for Vikram lander. We could compare both these two data of speed with graph (Trajectory Graph) and nominal speed (which was supposed to be 1.6 meters/second for soft landing). But they (propulsion engines) all didn't (probability). Also, there are three decelerations engines. On that note, due to start of decelerations engines and continuously running of propulsions engines, an unbalanced force developed on the Vikram Lander ; and as a result it turns *upsidedown* (kinds of spinning) for some moment. Since the Vikram Lander which has already on high momentum gets abnormalities( or kinds of malfunctions) on the parts transciever and transponder and unable to land safely. But it is for sure that Vikram Lander will not crush or destructions because Moon has low *gravity* which is apprx. 1.6m per sq.second. On all those analysis , we could conclude that this is the reason, Orbiter and Vikram Lander unable to link or communicate the signals. But lets hope , ISRO has already able to locate the Vikram Lander and trying to send the signals. In fact, NASA also trying to send the signals to Vikram Lander through Orbiter(since orbiter is working properly). We have total 14 days to complete the mission. . At last, Proud of ISRO ! Failure is the key of successes !!!

Yep, we're gonna learn a lot. The orbiter orbiting at an altitude of 100 km has a lifespan up to 7 years and the actual lander was designed for just 14 days.
Also the hi resolution camera man. If they lower the orbit they can probably get some 0.1 m/pixel shots, maps like that will be very useful for every space agency in the future! (Especially if the LRO fails)
What we learned is that it's not as easy to land on the moon as we thought and maybe we can learn from the data collected to save future astronauts lives

The payload was a secondary goal, but not critical. Also a god doesnt really play into this, it's likely something most would miss or fail to account for, either on the Engineering or Programig side. And even the crash is still valuable data.
@@Micsmit_45 Negative. A lander without wheels will always crash when landing at very high velocities. Therefore they are synonymous in this usage. But you get a bozo button for trying to be a jerk.
Looking mostly at the doppler. Engine imbalance , either one of the side engines overthrusting or underthrusting. This causes a tumble. Thrusters cut out. Lander recovers after one revolution (about 10 seconds, that's a fast tumble!). Lander acceleration down is less than gravity+thrusters, so likely only gravity while upside down. Thrusters re-engage shortly before correct orientation, but deceleration is somewhat less than before incident. (about 1/5th less). Malf thruster switched off? As lander has just lost 10 seconds of braking time, AND is braking at only 4/5th the rate... It hits the surface at significant speed, about the same time it *should* have entered hover mode. Impact at... 30-50 m/s? (manley says 100m/s. this sounds bit high but possible. We should have not a crater but a rather smushed ex-lander. About the same as a car in a highway head-on. My guess as for root cause... Throttle stuck on only one thruster when transitioning from "rough braking" to landing braking. Root-root cause, programming error that omitted that one thruster from the transition between braking modes.
Well reasoned and thought out hypothesis. Like Scott said, it would be interesting to get some footage of the lander to potentially figure out what the condition of the craft is in and how it "landed" and figure out what was the cause. But, rocket engines are complicated and this required fine control of the output. It would be very easy for a misfire to occur at that phase that just left the lander unable to recover in time. Just happened at the worst time possible.
Success is not when you land a rover on moon success is when you made 1billon people(including my whole family) stay awake till 2AM just to watch rover landing. Success is when a 8 year old start discussing space science and moon missions with her friends. So yeah rover landing was not successful but isro didn't failed they just burnt a fire in 1000's of Children and youth of country to become a scientist

They are efficient, but slow. With a bigger budget one can afford to be fast and wasteful. NASA has achieved so much for man kind that other nations are always playing catch up. So, wastefulness is not too bad.
Pradeep Sahoo India makes use of their budget much better then NASA. NASA can and typically runs the cost + profit model where they spend what it takes to reach a goal. India however, seems to set a budget and makes their goals happen within that amount. While NASA’s way can make things happen faster, India (I believe) will be the future of space travel. Their need to build within a much smaller budget prioritizes innovation and effectiveness over just getting it done. Let’s not forget that until the Apollo missions NASA also crashed a few landers themselves. I hope they make another attempt.

If you are engineering something that has already been accomplished, you don't need to experiment too much with design and rather stick to a fixed budget. Whereas, NASA when developing and operating the Space Shuttle was exploring uncharted territory. That's where you may sink a lot of money if you don't focus on cost-benefit. While lunar landing missions are always a challenge, there are known designs and their pros and cons are already known. So, ISRO has that advantage and can budget better than NASA. I will appreciate ISRO's thriftiness when they get into uncharted territory. I do wish they make one more attempt to land a bigger rover in the near future.

That mission was so close to a successful completion. You made it to the moon and the orbiter separated successfully with the lander. Perhaps on the next trip, you could pick a safer spot to land just to give you a chance to iron out the landing difficulties, then try the south pole again.
Pure speculation: At the 4km altitude the pid loops were hyper responsive, this lead to oscillations in the rotation of the craft. Those oscillations caused the fuel to be sloshed around in the fuel tanks. Fuel scavengers inlets went back an forth from gaseous to liquid environments make the engines less than consistent; therefore losing all control. Anybody know how the fuel tanks were constructed? Baffles, bags, or just open tanks?
@@vim1729 Accidents are *way* easier to design out in hindsight than in foresight. (Hence at adage "fail fast, fail often"; which hopefully occur in a testing situation and than the real thing!) ISRO's people are brilliant and diligent...nobody is perfect. Took SpaceX how many times to get a soft land working correctly?? It's not easy. It is rocket science after all!

This is the last and latest official update from ISRO : VikramLander has been located by the orbiter of Chandrayaan2, but no communication with it yet. All possible efforts are being made to establish communication with lander.

@@basedbear1605 If Apollo 11 had followed its automated landing program it would have crashed into a crater full of boulders. And that's if the radar data overflow error could have been corrected remotely. It only landed successfully because experienced pilots were controlling it in real-time. Apollo 12, 13, 14, and 15 all had anomalies which could easily have resulted in failure had there not been trained men on the craft capable of diagnosing and correcting mechanical and computational faults. As we know, in the case of Apollo 13 the fault was so critical that the crew barely survived after having to scrap any possibility of a landing.

I believe: more often, experience counts most. All the best for ISRO. Wish I could also be a part of that development technologically. In Small measure, of course.
This sucks, and I feel bad for them. ISRO put so many years and so much effort into the mission, only to have the last part of it fail. But like Scott says in the video, they still have the orbiter, which has most of the experiments and it's probably where most of the money went. So the mission hasn't failed, it's just partially successful.
Yes but the industrial sector as a whole in India isnt developed yet. There is a lack of technological know how at so many levels. ISRO has to get it done all by themselves and even then they have to compromise on lot of things because of funding.
It's not a complete failure, lots of data collected for their first attempt. They got further than the Russians ever did after quite a few tries. I suspect we will be hearing more from them in the future. Would have been really cool to get data and photos from the southern pole... but I guess we'll just have to wait til next go-around.
Even a failed lander test isn't a scientific failure when no crew was at risk. We don't get as much scientific info from the crash as we would from a successful landing, but it still produces useful data.
This is a reminder to all of us that even with great effort, talent and a master plan a small mistake or error can cause huge consequences. We are ambitious about exploring space even when are vulnerable by this. Anyway success or failure we all learn new things anyway. So consider it a win.

Honestly, this was heart breaking to watch. For a country that has accelerated its space program primarily in the last 10 years this was more of a win than a loss. But watching their cheers turn into puzzled faces of disbelief was difficult.
What the U.S. folks tend to forget, or weren't even alive for, was how many, many failures we went through before getting anything right. India is a country full of super smart people. Just give them time. And they'll be landing on that hunk of green cheese before you know it.

Actually now it's located and found 500 metres away from actual landing site and ISRO confirmed it had a hard landing but the vikram lander is in one piece and completely intact since rover is inside the lander ISRO is working to establish connection with it. Plz make a video on latest information available

Have to say, landing on the moon is hard. I've tried it in a video game (ksp) and ended up failing more than once. Gotta think real life landings are much much harder.

Unfortunate result. They were successful at creating a new crater on the moon though. Gotta look at the positives.
At only 60-100m/s it's not going to create much of a crater, though.
They already did with their first mission - Chandrayaan 1. The satellite threw an impact probe over near the South Pole of the Moon, which is how we were able to prove that Moon indeed has water.
Maybe good salvage for when anyone who gets stranded on the moon... though that's more relevant on mars.

This mission 🚀consisted of the Orbiter 🛰️(with 7-7.5 years of life span) and lander(Vikram) + rover(Pragyan) with 14 days of life span.
Orbiter 🛰️ is orbiting around the moon 🌒 and will keep scanning and sending photos of moon surface for next 7-7.5 years.
Although , ISRO lost contact from lander Vikram but still this mission has achieved it's 95% of it's initial objectives.
Btw , lander has been found using Orbiter and ISRO is still trying to contact with it .
Btw , Soft landing is really a complex task and to land rover on dark side of moon where no country hasn't reached yet was surely a difficult task but ISRO still tried it's best , So ..

My analysis:
There are four sections of propulsion engine inside the Vikram Lander which were supposed to be * turned off* (except one) during rough braking phase/stage of 10 minutes to get deceleration of the speed for Vikram lander. We could compare both these two data of speed with graph (Trajectory Graph) and nominal speed (which was supposed to be 1.6 meters/second for soft landing). But they (propulsion engines) all didn't (probability). Also, there are three decelerations engines. On that note, due to start of decelerations engines and continuously running of propulsions engines, an unbalanced force developed on the Vikram Lander ; and as a result it turns *upsidedown* (kinds of spinning) for some moment. Since the Vikram Lander which has already on high momentum gets abnormalities( or kinds of malfunctions) on the parts transciever and transponder and unable to land safely. But it is for sure that Vikram Lander will not crush or destructions because Moon has low *gravity* which is apprx. 1.6m per sq.second. On all those analysis , we could conclude that this is the reason, Orbiter and Vikram Lander unable to link or communicate the signals.
But lets hope , ISRO has already able to locate the Vikram Lander and trying to send the signals. In fact, NASA also trying to send the signals to Vikram Lander through Orbiter(since orbiter is working properly). We have total 14 days to complete the mission.

Yep, we're gonna learn a lot. The orbiter orbiting at an altitude of 100 km has a lifespan up to 7 years and the actual lander was designed for just 14 days.
Also the hi resolution camera man. If they lower the orbit they can probably get some 0.1 m/pixel shots, maps like that will be very useful for every space agency in the future! (Especially if the LRO fails)
They have landed the orbiter, the lander is now in the orbit. That explains everything.

Also a god doesnt really play into this, it's likely something most would miss or fail to account for, either on the Engineering or Programig side. And even the crash is still valuable data.

Looking mostly at the doppler.
Engine imbalance , either one of the side engines overthrusting or underthrusting.
This causes a tumble. Thrusters cut out.
Lander recovers after one revolution (about 10 seconds, that's a fast tumble!).
Lander acceleration down is less than gravity+thrusters, so likely only gravity while upside down.
Thrusters re-engage shortly before correct orientation, but deceleration is somewhat less than before incident. (about 1/5th less). Malf thruster switched off?
As lander has just lost 10 seconds of braking time, AND is braking at only 4/5th the rate... It hits the surface at significant speed, about the same time it *should* have entered hover mode.
Impact at... 30-50 m/s? (manley says 100m/s. this sounds bit high but possible.
We should have not a crater but a rather smushed ex-lander. About the same as a car in a highway head-on.
My guess as for root cause... Throttle stuck on only one thruster when transitioning from "rough braking" to landing braking.

Yes...isro did come out with initial report saying that one if the retro rockets went to 100% thrust rather that 70% causing the tumble.
Well reasoned and thought out hypothesis. Like Scott said, it would be interesting to get some footage of the lander to potentially figure out what the condition of the craft is in and how it "landed" and figure out what was the cause. But, rocket engines are complicated and this required fine control of the output. It would be very easy for a misfire to occur at that phase that just left the lander unable to recover in time. Just happened at the worst time possible.

I was hoping so much they would successfully land. They work with such a small budget compared to the US, yet they have managed to accomplish so much.
They are efficient, but slow. With a bigger budget one can afford to be fast and wasteful. NASA has achieved so much for man kind that other nations are always playing catch up. So, wastefulness is not too bad.
Pradeep Sahoo India makes use of their budget much better then NASA. NASA can and typically runs the cost + profit model where they spend what it takes to reach a goal.
India however, seems to set a budget and makes their goals happen within that amount.
While NASA’s way can make things happen faster, India (I believe) will be the future of space travel. Their need to build within a much smaller budget prioritizes innovation and effectiveness over just getting it done.
Let’s not forget that until the Apollo missions NASA also crashed a few landers themselves. I hope they make another attempt.

If you are engineering something that has already been accomplished, you don't need to experiment too much with design and rather stick to a fixed budget. Whereas, NASA when developing and operating the Space Shuttle was exploring uncharted territory. That's where you may sink a lot of money if you don't focus on cost-benefit. While lunar landing missions are always a challenge, there are known designs and their pros and cons are already known. So, ISRO has that advantage and can budget better than NASA. I will appreciate ISRO's thriftiness when they get into uncharted territory. I do wish they make one more attempt to land a bigger rover in the near future.

That mission was so close to a successful completion. You made it to the moon and the orbiter separated successfully with the lander. Perhaps on the next trip, you could pick a safer spot to land just to give you a chance to iron out the landing difficulties, then try the south pole again.
We have started to work on next landing attempt...hopefully in 2020 we will land our lander and rover on south pole of moon.
Pure speculation: At the 4km altitude the pid loops were hyper responsive, this lead to oscillations in the rotation of the craft. Those oscillations caused the fuel to be sloshed around in the fuel tanks. Fuel scavengers inlets went back an forth from gaseous to liquid environments make the engines less than consistent; therefore losing all control. Anybody know how the fuel tanks were constructed? Baffles, bags, or just open tanks?

ISRO's people are brilliant and diligent...nobody is perfect. Took SpaceX how many times to get a soft land working correctly?? It's not easy. It is rocket science after all!

This is the last and latest official update from ISRO : VikramLander has been located by the orbiter of Chandrayaan2, but no communication with it yet.
All possible efforts are being made to establish communication with lander.

@@basedbear1605 If Apollo 11 had followed its automated landing program it would have crashed into a crater full of boulders. And that's if the radar data overflow error could have been corrected remotely. It only landed successfully because experienced pilots were controlling it in real-time.
Apollo 12, 13, 14, and 15 all had anomalies which could easily have resulted in failure had there not been trained men on the craft capable of diagnosing and correcting mechanical and computational faults. As we know, in the case of Apollo 13 the fault was so critical that the crew barely survived after having to scrap any possibility of a landing.

This sucks, and I feel bad for them. ISRO put so many years and so much effort into the mission, only to have the last part of it fail. But like Scott says in the video, they still have the orbiter, which has most of the experiments and it's probably where most of the money went. So the mission hasn't failed, it's just partially successful.
Yes but the industrial sector as a whole in India isnt developed yet. There is a lack of technological know how at so many levels. ISRO has to get it done all by themselves and even then they have to compromise on lot of things because of funding.
The Indian space program has come a long way in a short time, especially considering their lack of funding.

It's not a complete failure, lots of data collected for their first attempt. They got further than the Russians ever did after quite a few tries.
I suspect we will be hearing more from them in the future. Would have been really cool to get data and photos from the southern pole... but I guess we'll just have to wait til next go-around.
Even a failed lander test isn't a scientific failure when no crew was at risk. We don't get as much scientific info from the crash as we would from a successful landing, but it still produces useful data.
This is a reminder to all of us that even with great effort, talent and a master plan a small mistake or error can cause huge consequences. We are ambitious about exploring space even when are vulnerable by this. Anyway success or failure we all learn new things anyway. So consider it a win.
