So basically to honor her deceased lover, Ellaria decides to kill her deceased lover's brother and nephew. Oberyn is probably so proud of her.

@@Thaddius0 same. i really thought that lord baelish was gonna square off against brann the boring. especially since, as glidus points out in other videos, petyr was made aware of brann's maphacks. so, littlefinger could use his own strategy and experience to outwit the guy who literally knows everything. or at least put up a good fight. have some critical piece of info petyr is unaware of be his undoing, or vice versa, be the crux of his success. he couldnt have known said piece of info, yet he acts as if he does, bc he had thought of all the possibilities, etc...
the downward spiral that petyr's character suffered throughout the later half of the series is just unforgiveable. its like if the chicago bulls released michael jordan in 1993. why squander such a resource?
i get it, he plays families against each other. but look, catelyn stark (CAAATTTT) was married to ned AND his brother (i think?) and petyr loved her. THAT DIDNT MEAN HE BECAME A TOTAL NITWIT. no, he built himself, his brothels, and his influence in spite of being spurned. thats what baelish does. he gets rejected, punched, throttled, but then recovers and surges. sansa should have been no different, i mean he didnt put all his chips on the table for catelyn, why would he do it for sansa in a much sketchier situation. and yes, petyr likes sketchy situations, but with jon and brann there, its just too hot for him to try to turn these two sisters against each other, using a means in which he knows a maphacker (that he meets) could totally decimate and expose him. which would and did (in the show) mean death.
he likes to gamble, sure. but he's not jon snow when it comes to his own life. he's protective of his own skin. thats why he left kings landing and secured the vale for himself. marrying sansa to bolton made no sense, i'll totally agree with that. the gambling angle just doesnt cut it for me. either he loves her enough to sacrifice his own selfish desires, or he doesnt. you cant have him throw away the greatest opportunity he will ever have to be with her and mold her to his ambitions, just to have him do EXACTLY THAT, later in winterfell, after sansa hates him. no master manipulator/sociopath would do that. thats literally what a scrub ex would do. an inept simp. which littlefinger wasnt. we saw that much in kings landing, he might not get the girl, but he aims higher, and hits that mark.
they reduced him to a warning to other writers: let characters drive the plot, and not plot drive the characters. especially if your plot directly contradicts what the characters would do.
anyways i love glidus, dude packs so much into every vid i find myself pausing frequently, and to me thats a good thing.

21:35 Not to mention how utterly offensive that line is to Oberyn's memory. "He was BUTCHERED." He volonteered to defend an innocent man from an unfair accusation, and to simultaneously to avenge the death of Ellia. And he succeeded. Yes, he got carried away and died. But they both had to know it was a very real possibility before he went in. And he still managed to defeat Gregor! He went out in the blaze of glory! And this is how his lover honors him.

Doran Martell is such a strong character in the books. His actions may seem weak at times, but the reader quickly learns he is much more cunning and aware than it seems. That coupled with the fact that he's constantly living with almost unbearable pain makes him one of the toughest characters in the series.

I have to say that Brienne waiting the whole of season 5 for a goddamn candle (Brienne from the books would've stormed the castle on her own by that point - "no chance and no choice", that's her whole thing in the books!) and *then* choosing revenge over Sansa is so extremely out of character, it made me so mad. They wrote Brienne so wrong from the start, portraying her as this battle machine, when in fact she is one of the most sensitive characters in the books and would do anything to keep her oaths and for the people she loves, who she swore her oaths to.

    • @Glidus

i agree. that dilemma should've been a defining moment that cemented brienne's dedication to her honour and her oaths. for them to deny her that moment, use her to exact murderous revenge, and then feel no remorse about it, is devastating to the character.

Upon trying to re-write Season 7, I tried to solve her arc by having her being punished for her action of killing Stannis. Devos reveals to Jon that Brienne killed Stannis(she revealed it to him at Castle Black remember). It's important for Jon cause he respected Stannis a lot and Jon's father declared Stannis as the One True King. So what she did was treason by killing the King. And so there's a trial at Winterfell. Sansa pleads for Brienne cause she saved her. But then it is revealed that the moment when Sansa was waiting for being saved by lighting the candle was the time she left her post to kill Stannis. Choosing revenge over oaths. So the verdict will be guilty and death(in my story I also had Baelish get a trial but he wins it and after Brienne loses hers, he propose to the court lead by Jon that Brienne needs one more chance and Baelish will send her on a mission of his own design)

Glad I’m not the only one who saw the missed potential of a Sansa-Pod relationship. After all that she’d been through, Sansa deserved to have someone in her life who was literally the exact opposite of a psychopathic monster. It would have probably helped stop her from being such a jaded and unlikeable character in later seasons. Plus it would show that Sansa had progressed from her dream of marrying a prince or high lord. And from Pod’s side, he was genuinely the kindest and purest character in the show, and it’s a shame that in the end he was only used as comic relief.

      TO FURTHER THE SANPOD AGENDA!
Sansa is born in 286 AC, Podrick born that same year or in 287AC - they're the same age, something that [pretty much a princess] Sansa would NEVER have expected from marriage. The only people her own age Sansa has gotten to hang out with, thus far (in GoT), are Jeyne Poole and Margaery. Pod has had Brienne, but she's closer to book!Theon's age and acts as Designated Adult for the entire series.
Age aside, there is the! Very! Interesting! "Podrick's from a cadet branch of House Payne, as in ILYN PAYNE, as in THE DUDE WHO EXECUTED NED STARK". Ser Ilyn is on Arya's comfort!hitlist. In the show, Ilyn is depicted as Evil but, in the books, Ilyn is one of Jaime's friends - they served & suffered together under Aerys. Post Jaime's unhanding, he bonds with Ilyn and SER ILYN! SPARS! WITH! JAIME! JAIME TRUSTS ILYN WITH SEEING HIS BAD SWORDING.
But, like, Sansa & Pod don't KNOW that but the whole Stark/Payne thing WOULD be decidedly awkward - and they could bond over how Awful living in the Red Keep was, and their respective relationships with The Lannisters.
But. Nope. Pod is a walking joke, Sansa's trauma is twisted to be "TORTURED INTO BEING GIRLBOSS, THX PETYR COPING VIA ACTING EMOTIONALLY DEAD MADE ME TOTS BADASS". ):

Can we all get over the idea of Pod the RodGod? Y'all really think an inexperienced, maybe virgin, boy is going to have something going on that impresses professional sex workers. And it's not just that they had sex with him for free, they would have been paying Petyr Baelish out of their own pockets, because he's not going to forego his share because the women who work for him enjoyed themselves.
And they wouldn't risk trying to hide their activities from Baelish, this is the man who has threatened Ros, who was mourning the death of one of the other brothel.employee's babies (murdered as one of Robert Baratheon's bastards) for being unhappy and putting off customers, telling he about someone he let a client kill because she wasn't smiling (and indeed, when Ros starts spying on Baelish for Varys, he sells her to Joffrey for target practice.).
I like the fan theory that Baelish tells them to take on Pod for free (and pays out of HIS pocket) so they can share any Tyrion secrets Pod might slip up when mention, it seems to be one of the things D&D "kinda forgot." That would actually be far less stupid than the idea that whores are impressed by someone's literal BDE or who is nice to them (a lot of clients want to believe sex workers really care about them) or who has some sexual prowess (it's not like he'd be the first, but hardly any sex workers are in it because it's fun for them, it's more efficient to get 'em in, get 'em out, quit kickin' about!)

From the beginning he was a hard man willing to do terrible things for what he saw as the greater good. From having Renly killed to burning idols of the Seven and weirwoods to even burning unbelievers.
Stannis was a fanatic, just not a religious fanatic like others. Shireen was always his lifeiine, the one part of his life he loved outside of his ambition. That final sacrifice, while terrible and heartbreaking, is a natural escalation of what he has been willing to do.
The real dumb parts are what led to it. Like fucking Ramsay somehow being able to get the better of a skilled snd seasoned commander like Stannis with a few dozen men. Just because they are in the north doesn't make southerners totally incompetent damnit.

@@adamvialpando106 I agree with you that Ramsay being able to outmaneuver Stannis was nonsensical. Stannis was supposed to be one of Westeros' greatest commanders yet did not defend his armies' supplies. The show conveniently does not show us how Ramsay and his men were able to reach and destroy Stannis' supplies.
However I disagree that Stannis' burning of his daughter made any sense for his character. It's true that Stannis burnt people but none of them were his daughter whom the show made very clear that he loved dearly. His love for his daughter is what separated him from the villains of the show, the burning scene destroyed that completely.
Furthermore his decision made no tactical or strategic sense either. Any commander with half a brain( and Stannis was one of the best commanders in Westeros) would have known that burning one's own daughter and heir would disgust his troops and lead to desertions. Not to mention that she was his heir and there was no guarantee that he would have had any more children to succeed him. Furthermore Selyse was valuable because as his heir he could have married her off to a future military ally.
My point is by having him burn his own daughter the producers turned his character into an idiot which made no sense.

It seems *very* likely at this point that if things go different for him in the books (making a *huge* assumption that the next book will ever be written) it will be because of the reaction to the show, which would go a long way towards explaining the five or so years between GRRM failing to turn his manuscript in on the deadline he had committed to and today, where said manuscript still doesn't exist.

Plus another horrendous move they did with the Dorne plot was change everything about it. For example TV Ellaria was the exact opposite of her Book version. Jesus, they cut out a lot of potentially good content that deals with conspiracies & plots with Dorne alone.

Sure, they never established in the show that any of the Starks besides Bran is a skinchanger. But Bran gained his skinchanger abilities after his fall and being paralyzed, right? Just have the 3-eyed Raven explain in an extra scene that skinchangers often awaken their abilities after a traumatic event such as an injury or disability. Or say that it takes prolonged time in darkness to develop the ability of skinchanging (Bran was in a coma for weeks after all). It would explain Arya's dormant abilities suddenly awakening and would make her a bit more special which might help a bit with the whole killing the Night King bit later on. It‘s a shame they seemingly didn‘t even consider the idea.

I'm so glad you're making this series. Season 6 is so many people's favourite season but it let me down on so many levels. Better than S7 and S8 for sure, but still bad on too many levels. This is the season that made me certain that the ending of the show would be terrible. When my knowledge of the lore of this world is enough for literally every episode to rub me the wrong way at some point, I know the writers are either incapable or can't be bothered to try, and that's not to mention the other issues with it. The scenes I enjoyed the most were actually the ones lifted from the books (funny that), like the siege of Riverrun... although the kingsmoot was a let-down. I can't wait until you get onto Arya's plot this season - the play was the only good bit, the rest was irritatingly nonsensical at every turn.

they fucked up some plotlines like in s5 (s6 is superior to s5) but I still found it really fun, btw ep. 9 and 10 were some of the best in the series for me.
They didn't have the quality of writing of first 4 season but it was still really good.

    • @sam_c95
      @sam_c95 3 ปีที่แล้ว +11

@@MyPrideFlag I can respect the view that season 6 is better than S5. I can understand why, but for me I didn't think so, and with all the problems I had with S6 I did not find it enjoyable overall.
The action was much more fun in S6 than S5 but that doesn't do it for me personally, I need more than that.
Because so many people think S6 is the best season (and I guess that doesn't include you as you say 1-4 had better quality writing), I decided to write down every issue I have with S6 (as well as things I thought were fair enough or even good as well - I am trying to be balanced!) in a scene by scene bulletpoint fashion, kinda similar to what this video series will hope to achieve I guess haha: so far I've written 4 pages about the first four episodes and it highlights to me just how problematic it is as a season. My biggest complaint, as I said in my original comment, is how much they took liberties with the lore, and the things that don't make sense or are just too coincidental or just for the sake of the plot and make no logical sense that it seems insulting to anyone who puts any thought or love into this world. It's true that in places I'm nit-picking, but in a lot of cases there are fundamental problems with S6 which makes it so much lower quality than even S5 for me because so much of it is contrived and doesn't make any sense. And I'm not being too unfair, the standard I'm holding it to is just equivalent to the previous seasons of this same show (S1-4 specifically because S5 wasn't great as you say).
It's true that episode 9 was exceptional in terms of cinematography/choreography etc, great action, but that's not enough. I felt no emotion in that episode because literally everything that happened I had expected since they eluded to the fact the battle would happen, it was so predictable, I felt no tension. I knew Jon would win, I knew he'd survive, I knew Sansa would be fine, I knew the Vale would save the day, I knew Ramsay would lose, I even expected him to die. And there was basically no other story in this episode other than those predictable events. The biggest thing I didn't expect was Wun-Wun dying, but I didn't care all that much, and the fact Ramsay didn't just shoot Jon undermined his death scene because it made it just dumb. A major issue is that the one twist in the plot (i.e. the arrival of the knights of the Vale) was super predictable episodes before the battle, but also that it made absolutely no sense for Sansa not to tell Jon about it! The whole battle was contrived. Also, the pile of bodies was just unrealistic and absurd - I'm aware that the battle was inspired by the Battle of Cannae where the bodies were reported to be "an obstacle on the battlefield", but I am certain it didn't look like three metre high piles like in the Battle of the Bastards, that's just ridiculous and implausible.
I will give credit to episode 10 for being the best in the season because it surprised me twice - once for the sept and once for Tommen's death. But as a conclusion to a broken season, I could not come out the other side of it with too many praises, especially with the nonsensical coronations of both Jon and Cersei in episode 10: there is no way whatsoever that Cersei could claim Tommen's throne with no blood-right and as a woman and have absolutely no political repercussions and resistance from her lords, and there is no way Jon Snow would randomly be declared king as a bastard and deserter of the Night's Watch. The entire time in S6 I was completely taken out of this world, trying to account for and justify all the missteps when in reality the truth is the writers just stopped caring about the lore and continuity as much as I did, and that completely devalues the show for me. How can I, just some nerd fan, know and care more than the rich professional writers? Just disappointing imo.

@@sam_c95 I 100% agree with you about there’s no way the other lords would just let Cersei take the throne given that she just committed mass murder. My only question is then who would take the crown now that Tommen is dead? I don’t really see another option

    • @sam_c95
      @sam_c95 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

@@TheValk777 Sorry, long reply haha. I am passionate about these asoiaf topics!
The TL;DR is we don't actually know who show Tommen's legal heir would be (I wish I had a better answer), but there would certainly be someone out there and it certainly wouldn't be Cersei.
      .
I was basing my argument only on the line of succession legalities and the attitudes of the court towards those values/laws/rules. But yes you're right, it's also true that Cersei committed not just mass murder but also sacrilege, equivalent to destroying the Vatican and killing the Pope, an attack on the gods themselves. Again, an action with no repercussions.
It is a valid question though: who is Tommen's heir? In the books Tommen still lives, but Stannis would be his legal heir by blood (obviously assuming Tommen is a Baratheon as the court believes he is), although Stannis' claim would very likely be disputed by the court due to his rebellion against Joffrey/Tommen. But Myrcella is also still alive in the books, and then there is Shireen after both of them so there would be an argument for her claim too.
But in the show all of those characters are dead, by S6. Unfortunately, the Baratheon family tree has not been fleshed out enough for us to determine Tommen's legal heir beyond that so it's hard to say, but it's certain that there would be _someone_ out there that carries Baratheon blood if you fully knew and tracked the family tree (get that book Ned was reading in season 1!).
As an aside, following the family trees can get quite wild and unexpected results - for example, did you know that when King Aerys II Targaryen ruled, Robert Baratheon was legally the sixth in line to the throne already, even before his rebellion (after Rhaegar, Viserys, Aegon, Rhaenys and Rhaella - Dany wasn't born yet)? In fact, once the Arryn's, Starks and Baratheons had rebelled, the reason they chose Robert to be the next king over Ned or Jon Arryn was _because_ Robert had the better claim to the throne, that it couldn't be as easily disputed by the lords of the court - that's how much the lords care about having a legal heir, conquest and hate for Aerys alone wouldn't have gained as much support as it did combined with his blood claim: Robert has Targaryen blood from his paternal grandmother. During Robert's Rebellion, Aerys, Rhaegar, Aegon, Rhaenys and Rhaella all died, and if Robert had killed Viserys too (and Dany if she was born already), he would have been the legal heir to the Targaryen throne! (This just adds to why he was so bitter that Viserys escaped.)
My point with this aside into Targaryen lineage is that we don't know the Baratheon family tree well enough to know who Tommen's heir would be once Stannis, Myrcella and Shireen are dead, but there would certainly be _someone_ alive with Baratheon blood if you trace it back far enough, and it wouldn't be Cersei.
On top of that, they have a precedent in Westeros that a female line is not considered over a male line unless there is no other option, and this is partly why there has never been a queen of the Seven Kingdoms, because it's quite unlikely to not have a male line heir (or failing that, a male descended via a female line, which is how Robert became sixth in line to the throne - he's a male via a female line, his Targaryen grandmother). They're pretty sexist in the Seven Kingdoms, it would be hard for Cersei not to have objection to her rule even if she had a strong legal claim (which she absolutely doesn't), it's completely implausible that she could just crown herself like that... and all that is not even to mention how the crowning legally has to be done by the High Septon who she had just blown up, basically declaring war on the Faith!
As another example, if you look into how Lord Robert (Robin) Arryn's heir is Ser Harrold Hardyng you can see how there is always an heir somewhere, and how it would never have been Lysa Arryn who was considered Robin's heir because she is not an Arryn by blood like Cersei isn't a Baratheon by blood: Harry is Robin's first cousin once removed.

Sansa out of the bunch is the most likely to have forgotten parts of it because she hasn't been trained as a lady since she basically left Winterfell.

Having Brienne choose Sansa over Stannis would have had a clear and powerful ripple effect that could better almost every related plotline.
Firstly, Brienne chooses to save the innocent rather than punish the guilty, she overcomes her need for revenge and instead focuses on doing good. It makes us like her more, she sacrifices her desires for doing the right thing. And so she is there able to rescue Sansa and Theon after they jump.
Secondly, Stannis can be captured by the Boltons. In their camp, it would allow some nice meaty scenes between Stannis and Roose or Stannis and Ramsey, and can grant House Bolton leverage over House Lannister. If they kill Stannis, the Lannisters would move on, but if they keep him alive, he will always be a threat, which can make the Lannisters offer more for his head while also creating tension between them (since the creators want to hint towards some kind of Bolton scheme against the Iron Throne). It would also give more reasons for Jon to attack Winterfell, since he saved the Night's Watch and the Wildlings (though, he also killed many Wildlings and much of the Night's Watch didn't like him, causing more tension). Jon could attack in an attempt to save Stannis as well as Rickon.
And, after the Battle of the Bastards, all these plot points converge into one very tense situation. The Trial of Stannis. He killed a child, he killed his daughter, he killed Shireen, and he must answer for that. We get to see Davos grapple with that and maybe abandon him, we get to see Brienne grapple with her own desire to see him dead (Sansa would probably want him alive, since he has Storm's End and is a rival claimant to the Iron Throne that she can support, and so Brienne's loyalties are once again tested), and Jon would have to grapple with his own sin of killing a child earlier this season. The outcome could still be Stannis's death and the naming of Jon as the King in the North, but there would not be a political and interpersonal element to it, as the allies of Stannis would not support Jon and relationships may be changed (Brienne and Davos may be able to work out their differences, but Jon and Sansa may not be a bit more at odds, helping set the status quo for the next season), also Jon executing the man who attacked Dragonstone when Dany was born (and indirectly being responsible for her mother's death) could be used to endear Dany to him when she first hears about him.
And that's not even mentioning Theon, who could be present this whole time and would also present a character with a history of child-killing. Three men who have killed kids to satisfy their own desires in one way or another, all in the same plotline that explores that very thing. It would be so interesting. And Jon would know Bran was alive, but would also know that two other innocent children were killed, and so there is still tension there. AND THEON KNOWS HOW TO TAKE WINTERFELL, AND THE BOLTONS HAVE RICKON! The plot perfectly sets up the middle of Theon's redemption arc. He rescues Sansa, he fights to save Rickon, and at the end he will die protecting Bran. Theon could use his skills to infiltrate Winterfell and open the gates for them after the battle (and so they expect a siege and Theon to save Rickon, but then Ramsey takes his army outside the castle along with Rickon, so Theon fails, but he becomes instrumental in taking Winterfell, so it's this grey area). There's just so much meat in this potential plotline. Stannis's Trial could also happen alongside Theon's trial, the resolution after the climax.
Hell, in the scene where they go to Deepwood Motte before the battle, they could parlay with Yara who turns down their offer of an alliance. They say they have her brother captured but she doesn't care, she thinks he is broken beyond repair, and then she goes off to the Kingsmoot. After the Kingsmoot, she flees and realises it can be nullified since Theon, a serious claimant, was alive but wasn't present, and so she returns and at the trial of Theon she arrives to present an alliance going forward, turning the tides in his trial and saving his life. Victarion or whoever the hell can be the one to go to Meereen and bring Dany back, creating tension between the Jon and Dany camps.
It's crazy how the Brienne plotline really just fucks up a bunch of other ones in a butterfly effect of shit.
Having Brienne choose Sansa over Stannis just enhances all these different plotlines, but the writers sought instant gratification rather than any kind of long-term plan. It was the writers, not just Brienne, who wanted to have their cake and eat it too.

I'm actually fine with Brienne finding and saving Sansa at the start of this season, that's the kind of contrivance stories like these are built around (although there probably should be a scene of Brienne and Pod hearing the hounds as they ride though the forest and deciding to check it out to make it seem like a little less of a deus ex machina), but it should've been much later in the episode, maybe even only in Episode 2 to heighten the consequences of their actions (that way it also makes much more sense for the hounds to find them in the mean time).
Because as it stands Sansa just jumped off a castle wall, paddled through a freezing river and then ran track and field through a snowy forest for what must've been hours and didn't even have hoarse throat to show for it.
Brienne finding Sansa as she lays seriously wounded, dying of hypothermia and about to be recaptured by the Boltons, would've made it so much more obvious to her how much she fucked up by going after Stannis first while still keeping the progression largely as is except Brienne now isn't just completely off the hook for abandoning her sworn duty. In fact Brienne getting Sansa to safety while she is injured and being pursued by the Boltons should've been a neat one episode conflict.
I suspect that the reason for why this didn't happen was due to the early symptoms of Sansa's transformation into a #girlboss and as such depicting her as vulnerable wasn't in the writer's interest.

Shame they dropped the bit where Melissandre burned Rattleshirt and kept Mance Raydar alive but under glamour. It would have been a good time to reintroduce glamours, he could have been sent to wait for Sansa since having her in Baratheon custody would be extremely helpful in rallying the forces of the North who loathed the Boltons.
Of course that would require competence and we can't have that.

This episode totally killed the series for. That having Jon come back to life with absolutely no consequences for either himself or the person who revived him completely broke all the rules of the world. For the entire series, death was clearly established as being a permanent condition. The perfect way to get rid of your enemies. Granted they already broke that rule with Berric, but at least he was only a minor character and he didn't have much effect on the plot. To do that with Jon simply because they didn't want to lose him as a character completely destroyed the rules of the show and there was no hope it would ever recover.

    • @TheStapleGunKid
      @TheStapleGunKid 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

@@facundogonzalez5453 Yeah basically the writers wrote themselves into a corner. They wanted to get Jon out of the Night's Watch, but they couldn't think of any way to do it without killing him and reviving him. Sadly, this wasn't necessary. They already gave him a way out by having Stannis offer to relieve him of his duties (In GOT, a king can release a Night's Watchman from his vows) But they had Jon reject him, probably because they figured Jon is so honorable he would never turn his back on the Night's Watch even if he had a legal way out of it.
While this is understandable, I still think it would have made a lot more sense to have Jon accept Stannis' offer. Considering how badly weakened the Night's Watch is after the battle for the wall, it would be perfectly logical for Jon to realize he could do a lot more to aid the Night's Watch as king in the North then he could as an actual Night's Watch member, and simply accept Stannis offer based on that. That would certainly be a lot more reasonable then having Jon die and come back to life. Plus it would have been a lot more interesting to see Jon as King of the North having to work with Allister Thorne as commander of the night's watch even though they both hate each other. It would have made for a much better story.
