I instead exploited the AI's weaknesses and used all my cars to the limit. When I was done with the licenses and most of the events, I had so much money that I was able to buy all the cars I wanted, and the special Black Race Cars all in one swoop from the used car calendar. One of, if not THE best, GT game I've ever plunged myself into.
One way to go around the save game bug "when you lose all your cars" is to just reboot the game, without doing anything to the save file. You might lose some credits or progress in a championship, but you don't lose your cars that you had before

I did a playthrough of GT4 trying to spend the least amount of credits possible, and that means holding back from buying a single car too, not just upgrades Unfortunately "Sports Truck Race" was the limiting factor, as there is no way to get a truck without spending credits... which means Professional Events + Endurances were as far as I could get for this "Zero Credits" game mode. I stopped playing after buying a truck and getting into Extreme, i just cant be bothered playing anymore :)
That's my preferred version of this challenge too. I think buying a truck is acceptable? It can be a "minimum buys" challenge or whatever. Like lowest percent speed runs. I'd watch a video of that challenge...

Agreed when GT7 was first released but they’ve fixed it now as far as I’m concerned. Apart from having the option to pay for credits, which is very easy to just overlook, it’s perfectly playable and you get a good amount of credits. Just do a few circuit experiences once in a while (and do well of course) and you get millions of credits. So yeah I don’t think that criticism is all that valid in its current state. Not at all
Yes, i have done this run without spending credits unless absolutely necessary, for example, pickup races, you need to buy one, you can Win the GTWC however you cannot 100% the game without upgrades, quick example is the Peugeot 206 race, you either buy the rally car or upgrade a stock 206 RC to the max because the AI is running Stage 3 Turbo systems
I know this is emulated in higher resolution but the game really holds up pretty well. Also Polyphony Digital always knew how to create realistic lighting which even nowadays racing game devs seem to struggle with sometimes to just have believable lighting and it not looking like it’s gone through some horrible colour filter or something.

Currently doing a version of this in GT3. The rules for that are no purchasing cars, upgrades, or perfortmace enhansers except oil. your starter cars are whatever you can get from golding license tests. the goal is to max out how much of the game I can complete but my realistic goal is winning the F1 championship. It's a lot of fun but kinda tedious at times
Update. Challenge was too easy so instead I'm doing a minimum car challenge on top of no upgrades. If my math is correct only two cars should need to be acquired to beat the GT World Championship in Extreme and the Formula GT challenge. The strat is to gold the S license test, use the Viper Concept to win the Super Speedway endurance race to win the f090/s, and beat the game with that. If that is too easy as well I may try going for minimum car with max completion and no upgrades. I don't think 100% is possible without upgrades (the Zonda cup in particular comes to mind) but it'll still be an interesting challenge

Yes, because race cars are maxed out by default and have all tire options available and nothing stops you from using only the best stock cars. Offroad stages could be a bit harder because you cannot use the best rally car in the game, the maxed out Dodge Ram 1500. Over 700 HP AWD massive torque and weight doesn't matter too much if you have excess grip and acceleration, are able to wall ride through the corners.
It is possible but you have to make sure your skill are really fine tuned , it all depends which cars you pick for which events you will challenge ....
you need the 1.1 version for the progressive 480p to work in emulator. With that patch you wont need to reload that option in menu each time you start again the game.

I usually turn traction control down to 1 and sometimes disable ASM settings in there

So with the NA version of this game there is the progressive 480p option and it makes it look a lot better , the EU Version doesn't have this option
