The part that was most interesting to me they didn't take the same side. Mehdi was on the side of economic realities having little to do with this election, hence the Teamster's story (60% voted for the side that wanted to vote away their pensions). It's more about culture and race. Owens was it was abosoultely economic realitites but his best example real wages dropped under Biden 3% and rose under Trump 7%.

Most of their differences where really just semantics, although I get it is so hard being an immigrant in the US right now. Mehdi must be angry and scared
@@glynisford8481 For me I am most scared that Trump steals Biden's accomplishments. As the left we can't let the right be like "Inflation rates are down, interest rates are down, stock market is up, crime is down, etc due to Trump conservatism is correct". Trump inherited those things. If Trump makes people think he did those things we get Vance in '28 nothing any of us can do at that point. Progressivism dies.
"Real wages went up for the lower 80%, and did not for the upper 20%". The financial success of the upper 20% are less reliant on wages, and are more reliant on capital gains. The conversation cannot be exclusively about income/wages, it also needs to be about wealth distribution.
@RK-um9tu "real wages" is a term used to account for inflation. If inflation goes up by 5%, and wages increase by 5%, then real wages stayed the same. However, something I didn't get into is how the way we calculate and talk about inflation is flawed, since economists try to encapsulate it into this CPI "basket of goods", which doesn't include home prices since that's seen as an investment, not the good of shelter to provide for a human need. And then there are these other indices they break it apart into for education costs and insurance costs and the like... But what this all misses is that everything is being paid for in the same currency: the US dollar, and that is what is being inflated through the change in the ratio of how many dollars exist, divided by the total sum of things to spend those dollars on, multiplied by the frequency that dollars are spent. That equation results in the real inflation we experience: aggregate price inflation, of which CPI is a crude estimate of. I didn't want to make my initial comment too long, so I didn't include this, but it relates to your comment because even if real wages went up according to wages compared with CPI, they (likely) didn't when you compare wages with aggregate price inflation, hence your comment. Basically, I agree with you, but it's complicated, and the economists saying real wages went up are obfuscating the reality we are experiencing.
This was infuriating to watch. You’re not on msnbc doing gotchas, maybe let the guy talk and get his points across. Esp when they’re way better takes than your’s that u interrupt with.

Mehdi wants to show the flaws in the mindset of some voters, but his instinctive debate style is attack. So he unintentionally wants Owen to bring some of those talking points to the fore so he can attack them.
Medhi REFUSING to understand the basic concept that if I was paying X for food before, and making Y for income, but now food costs (X+Z)*inflation while I'm STILL making Y, or even Y-Z from losing a job and getting hired at a reduced rate in another one, I am not going to be happy about "reduced inflation." I am going to be furious that my PURCHASING POWER has dramatically decreased no matter how much lower the *rate* of inflation (corporate greed) is now compared to during the pandemic. Simply put, you can't have essential goods cost 1.5-3x the amount they did before while pay remains unchanged or only increased slightly and still be happy. Multimillionaire Medhi REFUSES to understand that for 315,000,000 Americans.
Because when you say something stupid or false You should be corrected, not allowed to go on and on The point is that this "feelings and vibes" that Owen is saying isn't a good metric to run the country on Nothing to me stands out more is how Owen was quick to change the subject Once Medhi pointed out that actually the Bernie message doesn't apply to reakcworldnconditons Where running on those policies achieves nothing or still has people vote for the party against those policies And Owen had to go back to "well people just feel this way"
@@mckenzie.latham91 "Stupid or false" by your standards. Such a metric is difficult to ascribe with an even hand. Even if Owen was spouting drivel -which I don't believe he is - Medhi ought to be professional enough to countenance hearing something he may himself had considered before. If Owen had nothing to offer, then why should he be invited on the show? This is a trend I've noticed with Medhi on every occasion he has spoken to Owen, and I'm worried it's becoming a bit of a habit for him. This does poke holes in the narrative that if we just run progressive populism that we beat the right Also both Owen and Sanders do not account for right wing media Or racism interfering with worker solidarity White working class will sell black and brown working class out the moment they think they are being Shafted to favour POC in any way And you don't get around that by being pro worker cause they will side with anti worker policies and politicians just because they think a black worker will have one up on them
@@monicarenee7949 I disagree, Medhi is pointing out that the whole idea of "abandoning the working class" Doesn't play out when the working class Will ignore gains in their favour Or reject policies and politicians who have pro worker policy And will side with anti worker policy and people If you care about union pensions and vote against the party that saved your pension for the party that didn't cast a single vote to save them Or if you believe in raising the minimum wage but vote for politicians who openly attack and refuse to support it Then there is something else there And workers rights and or working class policy isn't your priority.

The ppl with the best material conditions the world has even seen voted in huge sweeping victories for Nixon and for Reagan becuase the civil rights movement had just happened and they deciced they would rather have progressive policy for NOBODY, than to share it with black ppl. this also plays out in why the democratic states like new york n california have shitty democrats and the super white midwestern states have democrates who win that push super progressive policy. If white ppl think of a black or brown face when u say free shit they hate it n think that they arnt deserving, if they see a white face like theirs in their minds when u talk about free healthcare n government help they think its helping the little guy like them and that its deserved. its just not as easy as offering good policy and improving material conditions in america. you also need to sell it in a why that allows white ppl to put their own faces on it and not think to much about it going to minorities.

Its quite interestering really to observe both in the USA and the UK, that there are many people that dislike social policies that address innequalities in wages, rents and living costs. I have to agree with Owen on the inflation and wage thing. I have a 2-year contract. We got a 1% raise for 24-25 and no raise in 25-26. Tell me again how my wage has kept pace with inflation. Housing prices are out of control. That is huge as well. People having to spend all their money just to afford a place to live is huge. Denying that reality is a BIG problem with Democrats. Either way, this reality is going to suck. Edit: I really appreciate both of you. Thank you for conversations like this.
I’d go further in saying Medhi’s argument is what sends voters running from the Democrats. “We haven’t abandoned workers, they just don’t understand how good things are.” Also, to anyone in a union, the “Biden saved pensions!” argument is going to go over like a lead balloon. The workers do that on their own, Biden gets credit for not siding with the bosses to crush them anyway, which Biden did during the rail strike. No worker cares if Biden showed up at a picket line one time.
@ What is that saying (Jung, Jane Austen, and others have variations)? “You are what you do, not what you say you’ll do.” She was cozying up to billionaires and hanging out with Cheney. How can people trust someone behaving like that to have their best interests at heart? I think voting for Trump was the opposite of helpful but the Democrats must take ownership of the fact that so many of us feel they have sold out to their wealthy donors. It’s all so frustrating. The right is ten thousand times worse. I feel so depressed. We need someone to fight for us.
@@georgeandrews1276 You didn’t listen to what I said. I agree that the right sucks! They’re just really good at lying. But every day there is less and less daylight between the two parties and that makes it really difficult to stand up for dems.
Good god, I had to give up half way through this. Mehdi is insufferable, barely listens to what Owen says, interrupts him all the time.. I don't think Owen managed to complete a single point. And the sad thing is that Medhi's main point is "Americans are too stupid to know when their lives get better (/too stubborn to care about that reality over partisan loyalty)". That's the kind of stance that will get you Trump elected. It doesn't matter how stupid you think voters are, if you aren't willing to make them feel heard and address their concerns, then they won't flipping vote for you.
I live in California I’m not sure it’s fair to say we “rejected rent control” Prop 33 was legitimately one of the most confusing bills I and anyone I’ve talked to have ever seen. Nobody I know understood what their vote would mean but not only that people here in San Francisco were being sold the idea that prop 33 would remove existing rent control in the city It may have failed anyway if it was more clearly communicated, but also I’m willing to bet a lot of us had no idea what we were voting for
He is right. Every year they are saying our GDP is growing, but we are struggling more and more. 1 probably they are lying. 2 maybe, GDP doesn't show us.
I think Bernie's point is a macro one. Yes, Biden had some decent economic policies, eg his appointees on the nlrb. But these micro level changes aren't what people associate with the democratic party at large because of the general decline in living standards and rising inequality of the last 50 years. They instead associate the democrats with the status quo because that's how they present themselves against trump. And also, of course, they lost a lot of key voters on Palestine who either voted for another party or didn't come to the polls at all. And yes, please Mehdi, please stop interrupting.
I’m as far left as you could possibly come as far as someone who voted for Harris and was excited for her to win and I think the job market and economy is shit. And the jobs report was bs. I have some “privilege” of being a higher wage worker than median but I’ve been laid off for over a year like a lot of tech has (I worked in the finance industry) and I was kind of shocked they doubled down on the jobs report and how great the economy was. If I think it’s crap I can’t imagine what lower wage earners think and what a slap in the face it is. The “working class” consists of more than unionized tradespeople with pensions, job security, and benefits even I’ve never had. I never hear either side ever mention them. Working 2-3 lower paying part time jobs and gigs because you can’t find one full time job with benefits isn’t the net gain IRL that it is on paper. Ghost job listings should be illegal and gig apps shouldn’t be able to get away with paying on “engaged time.” It’s only a matter of time before McKinsey pitches that pay model to big corporations and wins.
I found this really hard to watch. I'm subscribed to both of these guys, but Owen has the right of it, and Mehdi just really comes across like so many elite I'm hearing from: just not understanding how regular people think or feel, and not pausing long enough to actually listen to them just dismissing their voice.

"Real wages went up for the lower 80%, and did not for the upper 20%". The financial success of the upper 20% are less reliant on wages, and are more reliant on capital gains. The conversation cannot be exclusively about income/wages, it also needs to be about wealth distribution.
The upper twenty percent have had financial success from 2010 to 2020 many millionaires turned into billionaires i think you had a good run
Increase didn't cover inflation, so wages didn't go up...

Mehdi, if you are decided what is the cause and what are the facts then please just do a monologue. Do not invite another person to discuss when you don't want to let him speak. Please. It was hard to follow.
I love these 2 together, they are like 2 best friends talking 🤣 Specially the end
ONE AT A TIME! Jesus, it's like a talking contest.
I'm more with Owen's take on this.
Good point of Hassan about perception of economics. The perception that Cheeto is a “smart businessman” and beneficial economically overrides a lot of facts.
I think I might keep watching this channel. Maybe if I do, I will see Mehdi let Owen get the end of a sentence once without drawing him out into tangents.
35 minutes of interrupting each other and saying nothing but "yes, but- but- why-". Thrilling coverage
Messaging and adequate dissemination of knowledge is key.
I don't watch western mainstream media anymore. Independent journalists are my go to real news for me.
Mehdi and Owen both did an amazing job of reporting real news. Thank you both.
I’m aware of what the democrats have done for working class people and I’m also aware of what they haven’t done.
We have an unlivable minimum wage and housing is unaffordable for the same people.
They didn't really deny it. I remember Harris addressing this.
“You are what you do, not what you say you’ll do.”
She was cozying up to billionaires and hanging out with Cheney.
@@NoraMorganwhile the other side had the richest man in the world on his campaign! You're transparent.
@@georgeandrews1276 You didn’t listen to what I said. I agree that the right sucks! They’re just really good at lying.
What I want, and what I think everyone wants, is someone to actually stand up for us. I don’t want the dems to find someone who is a better liar.
I’d sooner die than vote for the right.
I live in California
I’m not sure it’s fair to say we “rejected rent control”
Prop 33 was legitimately one of the most confusing bills I and anyone I’ve talked to have ever seen. Nobody I know understood what their vote would mean but not only that people here in San Francisco were being sold the idea that prop 33 would remove existing rent control in the city
It may have failed anyway if it was more clearly communicated, but also I’m willing to bet a lot of us had no idea what we were voting for
During the pandemic, the highest wage workers did not see a wage increase, but the truly wealthy made out better than anyone else by a huge margin.
He is right. Every year they are saying our GDP is growing, but we are struggling more and more. 1 probably they are lying. 2 maybe, GDP doesn't show us.
One advise for Mahdi: please don’t interrupt your interlocutor too much. He is way better than most but he can be even better.
Mehdi is like the left's Piers Morgan...he should let Jones speak...
They are two of the best presenters ever, like their courage and honesty..
“Thanks for coming on Mehdi Uncensored. “
As much as I want to listen to you both. STOP interrupting each other!
"American is a thing you can move easily", said Netanyaho. While he was the first person who congrats Trump. He fooled the US presidents 😂😂😂
Please Mehdi give your guest chance to express their views.
I love your debates. You are excellent.
Mehdi was interrupting so much I was half expecting him to ask Owen to condemn Khamas.
I found this really hard to watch. I'm subscribed to both of these guys, but Owen has the right of it, and Mehdi just really comes across like so many elite I'm hearing from: just not understanding how regular people think or feel, and not pausing long enough to actually listen to them just dismissing their voice.
You have 2 ears an one mouth. Listen, don't interrupt!
Love both these guys. Mehdi finds it difficult to stop winning debates tho 😅. Let Owen speak bro
15:41 i love what kyle kulinski @seculartalk said about this. "Republicans say, 'i hear youre struggling. Immigrants are taking your jobs' " (even though this is BS)
Democrats say, 'actually, your life isnt so bad,...let me show you this graph' ".
Secular Talk is awesome. Been listening to Kyle Kulinski since Obama, and I love how he never pulls any punches, whether with the right, or the left. He was one of the founders of the Justice Democrats (the squad), and publicized the hell out of AOC when nobody knew who she was. He also slays when debating right-wingers, like Tomi Lahren, Scottie Nell Hughes, etc.
