    Thank you so much for this video. This information is so appreciated!! I’ve had a tortoise for almost a year and am just learning my lesson on why I need a thermostat. I’ve been meticulous about my temperatures and out of nowhere today my bulb started throwing temperatures nearing 10 degrees hotter than usual. Thank goodness I was home and noticed within an hour of it occurring. Now I’m trying to educate myself on thermostats so I can but the right one. The only thing I’m still trying to figure out is what kind of bulbs you can use in a dimming thermostat. Does it need to be a bulb sold with dimming capabilities? I am currently using a 125 watt mercury vapour bulb but am working on a new enclosure which I will them be switching to the fluorescent uv bulbs and using incandescent flood lights for heat. Can the mvb and regular flood lights be used on a dimming thermostat?

      @@NORTHERNEXOTICS I set it up today and i don't understand it, i set the thermostat at 27C and set the heat mat on the top side outside and the prob on the inside against the glass, the temp reading in the thermometer is 23,5C at max(which is the actual room temperature right now), and my thermostat keeps on turning the heat mat off, what could be wrong there, it makes no sense.
      First my heat mat wasn't warming up at all after being plugged in all afternoon onto the thermostat and i tried it without thermostat away from the tank, and got warm really quickly so i swapped the thermostat to another wall plug and seems to get warmer now, but it wont switch back on when the heat mat is cold and the temperature isn't the one I set it up to.

    Thank you for your advice it’s been massive help and these videos really have taught me so much,
    I have a bit of a dilemma and hope you don’t mind giving your advice.
    I have a 137.5cm x 49x 56cm (4x2x2)vivarium for my bearded dragon.
    I had a ministat 300 however your videos made me purchase the habistat dimming as that’s the one I needed.
    I now have the habistat 600w high range dimming thermostat but finding it very hard getting the correct temps in the viv.
    When I use a 100w bulb it doesn’t heat the viv up enough and when I use a 150w bulb it heats the basking spot too much. I’ve placed the thermostat thermometer all round the viv and can’t get a correct temp gradient.
    I have the temps at 27c cool side and they were at 38 with my previous thermostat however with the dimming thermostat I can’t get the hot end to heat up enough and I’m very concerned about it because it’s beginning to cause stress to my dragon. What do you recommend?

    • @NORTHERNEXOTICS
      @NORTHERNEXOTICS  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      This is a complex one. Probe placement it vital in this situation. I had the same issue. I've now changed to consentrating on ambiant temps . My probe is in the middle of the enclosure. With the heat bulb at one side you still get the temp gradient however the basking spot temp can vary slightly but it causes no harm as long as it does get to temp for a period of time throughout the day. My basking spot is perfect for a few hours in the morning until the enclosure has heated up then the bulb will dim down until it cools off then the stat will bump it back up. It's ambiant temps that the animal needs to digest food correctly just like in the wild. This is new scientific research

    I really need your help I’m so confused 🤷‍♂️ I’m getting a jewelled lacerta and from the person I’m getting him off they said not to get a dimming thermostat and to just get a few different bulbs with different wattages and then use a heat gun to test the temp until you find the right one because dimming thermostats just flicker, and cause the animal stress. Do you have to get a bulb that is dimmable? Or are they right ? I thought from what you said that it’s a very good idea to get a dimming thermostat because then you know it’s not going to get too hot and as I understand it you can get a 100w and adjust the temp with the thermostat ? So I wouldn’t need to buy all of these different types of wattage bulbs.

    Couple of questions. im setting up a leopard gecko enclousure - 120cm x 40 x 40cm. Is this big enough for the entire life of the gecko or would you upgrade later? Ive got a Arcadia T5 7% stip bulb (its tiny thou!), got a small wattage basking bulb on one side and heat cable for the other. Ive got them all plugged into Habistat Digital thermostats? Im struggling to figuare out how to get the heat cable on a low temp (around 20c) on 24 hrs a day so considering one of the Habistat turn dial thermostats which one would you recommend?

      Remove the heat cable totally. It's not needed. One side is hot side and the other side is cold side. Uvb light is up to you. I'd say a timer. On for a few hours at dawn and a few at dusk. No need to have it on through the day . Save electric. Hot spot about 90°f

      You have to think in the wild they have season and temp changes through there year .
      Spagnum moss is great inside the moist hide. Make it damp but not to wet

    Great video, can you help please?
    I have a 4Ft wooden Viv that i have just set up and awaiting COVID the Dragon's arrival.
    On the hot side I have a steady temp of 110 Deg in the basking spot, then moving across to the middle I have a temp of 82 Deg then the cold end is 74 Deg (Too Low).
    So I suppose my question is, I have put a CFH bulb in the cold end and I want to put a thermostat on it,
    A. is it feasible and B. which one is best to ensure a good all round temp.
    Thanks in advance
    Keep up the good work as i have learnt a lot already.

    • @NORTHERNEXOTICS
      @NORTHERNEXOTICS  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      You can use a che . You could leave it as is and see how the dragon gets on or move the basking bulb 2 inches closer to the cold side which will increase the temp gradient on the cool side

      Hi i gave it a go but my basking spot has now gone up to 120 deg, What do you set your thermostat too in the centre of the Viv?
      I will give that a go when my dimming thermostat arrives.
      TIA

    I’m thinking of getting a Beardie in a 75 gallon tank. I was just wondering what I should use? I’ve heard the Reptisun is good for UVB, but does it need a fixture? Will a basking light heat the whole tank or should I get a separate bulb? Should I have a thermostat or just a thermometer on the cool end? Could I use a ceramic on a flickering thermostat, a UVB always on, and a standard light on a timer for day night? What fixture should I use? Since my tank is top removing what should I do there?

    • @NORTHERNEXOTICS
      @NORTHERNEXOTICS  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      A mercury vapour reptisun will work. I think 100w . Can't use a thermostat on them tho. They will provide uvb and uva .

    • @thepokejohnny5288
      @thepokejohnny5288 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      From what I’ve read I don’t know if mercury vapor is right for me. It’s an easier option but I don’t want to worry about checking if it’s still doing uvb output and the such. Plus I don’t know if one bulb would cover 75 gallons enough. Maybe a reptisun and mvb but that’s getting expensive

    • @thepokejohnny5288
      @thepokejohnny5288 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ok, so from what I found I think mercury vapor actually might be perfect. I'm going to put it slightly more toward the center than normal because I worry it may not get enough UVB consistently, but I'm not sure on that. Heating wise I believe I should be fine, (I already have a single fixture) but otherwise I could just add a ceramic.

  • @camster1727

    Is there a thermostat on the market that not only heats a tank but cools it too? I live in a yurt, heated by a wood stove in the cooler months and without air conditioning in the warm months, so the temperature in my home has greater fluctuations day to day and season to season than your average home. I can't seem to find a thermostat that entirely thermoregulates an enclosure, which would be essential if I'm to keep a snake. Please say there's some fancy setup that can do this.
