      Clint's Reptiles I’ve gotten the impression these are for people like yourself who keep lots of reptiles. Emily has promoted Jump Start over the years, but I found one on Amazon I actually like better, and its cheaper. Boho Farm Heat Mat Thermostat. It’s $17. I needed to switch as I had 2 Jump Starts die on me. At $35 a piece, that gets expensive! I’ve been running the one on my python for almost a year and it’s still doing the job.

    Just a note: visually opening your units and seeing something that looks like a relay does not mean it is a probe temperature safety shut off. Relays can be used for several different functions in an application like this, and indeed relays may not be the best option depending on circuit design. It would be much more useful to get the manufacturer's information as to their safety features, as well as how they work (there are many possible failure modes besides hi-temp on probe).

    • @spyderrobotics_sales
      @spyderrobotics_sales 4 ปีที่แล้ว +26

      All power on a Herpstat is controlled by the triac components. The safety relay is inline to the main power running to those and acts as a kill switch. Under normal conditions the power flows through the relay to the triacs and when activated the relay breaks the contacts so it will cut power to all outputs on the thermostat. The main reason for that feature is if a triac fails it normally fails full on so you have a run away heating condition. These failures were common with other brands who used triacs that were barely rated for the spec. I have always used much higher rated triacs in my design so that type of failure is extremely rare but I came up with the safety relay as a precaution. However, it doesn't provide automatic protection because the user must choose to turn it on. That is because there is a downfall that comes with it. Lets say you have it enabled and you have a situation where one of your enclosures overheats (probe falls out of cage, ect). When the relay kicks on you are going to knock out power to all outputs on a multi output thermostat. If you have eggs in a incubator on the other output its going to go without heat. Since its going to affect the other outputs some people may prefer to go without the safety relay and deal with the overheat on one enclosure if their income is depending on on the other enclosure. We can't make decisions like that for people which is why we always try to give the options to the user. That safety relay can be triggered on any alarm, just high, just low, ect. The advantage of a single relay though is sometimes it catches when people make a mistake and pair the wrong probe with the wrong power cord causing their own overheat situation. If you only shut down the side that was sensing the overheat it would no be effective because the user has the probe in the wrong enclosure. By shutting power down on all outputs you can still make the save. Again, many possibilities so it pays to be flexible with your options. Oh, and wifi is on the way. Email alerts, scheduled status emails, remote monitoring and setting, graphed data, color lcd, browser based so works on iphone, android, pc. Its pretty slick. It will be for the techies. Launch date is not set yet but its not far off. User manual on the new Herpstat 2 SpyderWeb device is on our website under the support section. Great video BTW! Customer mentioned it and sent me here. :^) -Dion (Owner, Spyder Robotics)

    I have used the herpstat thermostats for years. Early on I used the Helix brand. The Helix thermostats were nice but lacked the options that the herpstats have. The earlier versions of the herpstats had fans in them. The fans would eventually go bad causing issues with the thermostat. Spyderrobotics has since changed the design of the herpstats, removing the fan. At least in the herpstat 2 and lower. I've never used the 4 or 6. I'm sure the VE, and FB are great also. Spyderrobotics has great customer support if you do ever need to get a replacement, or repairs done. I'll be sticking with the herpstats. In my opinion, they are the best thermostats for reptiles on the market. I'd avoid the cheap petshop thermostats. You get what you pay for. Buy cheap, buy it twice. Spend a little more get a great product from a very well established company.

      @@not_mrphilips Those are non-proportional thermostats and are at a large disadvantage for fine temperature regulation. They are half as expensive because they have half the tech. Plus you have to listen to the clicking relays all night long which makes them unreasonable for use in a bedroom. They have no real features / alarms. Their quality is no better. You can search the web for reptile use and brewing beer use and find plenty of people that have had failures with the industrial thermostats. The Herpstat is designed specifically for reptile use and we have worked with people almost 20 years now fine tuning them. Our Herpstats are used in large zoo's all across america as well. You should try a Herpstat sometime and see for yourself. They are a little more expensive but when you consider what people spend on their animals its money well spent. :^) -Dion (Spyder Robotics)

Could have done some serious damage to my snake as well, but the potential for fire with heat mats, even really well made ones, should not be overlooked! I wish heat mats came with Built-in thermostats. Reptile products do not tend to have them, but I was able to find one on Amazon that was designed to warm up seed mats for gardeners that had a built-in thermostat. It was excellent and not that much more expensive. :-)

    I've been reading up on different thermostats, and lots of people have said they started making thermostats with pulsing and dimming options cause one of those settings would create a humming sound throughout metal snake racks. If you have PVC racks, i guess no noise would emit. I'm looking up videos cause i need a new one. My VE-100 keeps making a clicking noise every few seconds, and it says check probe. So my choices are A) 20 bucks on a new probe. That might not work. B) 150 on a new thermostat. Or i took option C) 28 bucks on a thermostat called inkbryd. Lots of people talked highly of it in many snake forums. And with Christmas and the first of the month right around the corner , i really have no choice but to take the cheapest route for now. Fingers crossed. Thanks for sharing your thoughts and insight on these. Happy New Year 🎉 ✨️ 💛 🤗

    For what its worth... i have experience with the VE and its "warranty".. i got a unit and tested/used it for 3 weeks, and i encountered a range of problems, from the unit not sending power to the heating devices, to LOUD clicking noises that would not stop, but the problems were sporadic, it would work for a day or two and then fail in the middle of the night. I contacted them, and they ran me through a range of "issues" that i might be having as in getting probes crossed and other user errors, but nothing fixed it, and i literally tried everything, spent hours and hours working on it. Finally i demanded to send it back, they raised their eyebrows, said they just wanted to make sure it wasnt a 'user error' as i was going to have to cover the shipping cost myself, and they would hate for me to ship it back for nothing. I paid the shipping back, and they claimed to find no problems with it and just refunded me as i told them i was not taking that same unit back. I hope to god they didnt pawn off that unit on somebody else..
    After that i got a herpstat and have had ZERO problems, its half the size, has more functionality and is just a dream.
    Anyways, just me 2 cents on the VE "lifetime warranty". Cheers.

    I bought a herp stat for my snake recently and upgraded his heating element from a heat mat to a radiant heat panel
    I did lift the radiant heat panel burn for about a week before introducing him to it so it could burn off that new smell but it seems to work really well now in his PVC enclosure

    Awesome.... I use freedom breeder also...... But i think the voltage is so high because they are a rack company so they will use alot more voltage than other ones ... So i guess depending on how big heat tape or rack is....

    Great video Ed and Emily, I love comparison videos. You two knocked it out of the park with this one. I have been on the fence for sometime in making this decision. Herp stat 2 seems like a winner. Would like to see long term use videos and opinions on the herp stat. Thanks again!

      Radiant heat panels are useless if you are not using a "pulse" thermostat. Jumpstart does not make those.

    Freedom breeder upped their price since this video was released. I've personally had trouble with the Vivarium Electronics (VE) thermostats and won't buy them again, even with the lifetime warranty. Spyder Robotics's Herpstat is 100% worth it for the dimming feature alone and good luck finding it in any other commercially available thermostat at a reasonable price.
    Now if only I could get my hands on the wifi enabled Herpstat 2 Spyderweb that has been sold out for over 2 months now.

    How would thermostats work in a rack system? If you only have one probe, do you use multiple thermostats or just pick one bin for the probe to go into?

    • @reptilerant173
      @reptilerant173 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Erika Aberle You normally tape the probe onto the middle of the heat tape on the middle shelf.

    @Snake Discovery. Which would you recommend; a radiant heat panel or a CHE bulb setup? I am currently building a custom enclosure for my ball python (42"L x 18"W x 24"H)

  • @JHaesthetics
    @JHaesthetics 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    For dimming output so far I have found Herpstat 1, 2, 4 etc, and Exo Terra thermostats (models with screen but watch out for the model with a light sensor in temp probe as it makes using night drop impossible if u have a heat lamp attached). I got a Exo Terra 600W PT2463 and the temp probe cable is so thick and only 6ft long. The heat lamp dimming is also not smooth. So now Im going to get the Herpstat 2 which has sunrise/sunset ramping, very smooth light dimming & a nice thin 12ft temp probe.

    Can you do a follow up on your ARS racks now that you have some miles on them? They were sweet out of the box but want to know about durability. Freedom Breeder pushes advertising big at shows and on many TH-cam channels. I almost never see anything from ARS. I have FB and they are awesome but your video sure made ARS racks look good too.
