Walking through the halls of the Winter Palace

  • The Winter Palace in Saint Petersburg, Russia, was, from 1732 to 1917, the official residence of the Russian monarchs. Today, the restored palace forms part of a complex of buildings housing the Hermitage Museum. Situated between the Palace Embankment and the Palace Square, adjacent to the site of Peter the Great's original Winter Palace, the present and fourth Winter Palace was built and altered almost continuously between the late 1730s and 1837, when it was severely damaged by fire and immediately rebuilt. The storming of the palace in 1917 as depicted in Soviet paintings and Eisenstein's 1927 film October became an iconic symbol of the Russian Revolution.
The palace was constructed on a monumental scale that was intended to reflect the might and power of Imperial Russia. From the palace, the Tsar ruled over 22,400,000 square kilometers (8,600,000 sq mi) (almost 1/6 of the Earth's landmass) and over 125 million subjects by the end of the 19th century. It was designed by many architects, most notably Bartolomeo Rastrelli, in what came to be known as the Elizabethan Baroque style. The green-and-white palace has the shape of an elongated rectangle, and its principal façade is 250 meters (820 ft) long and 30 m (98 ft) high. The Winter Palace has been calculated to contain 1,786 doors, 1,945 windows, 1,500 rooms, and 117 staircases. Following a serious fire, the palace's rebuilding of 1837 left the exterior unchanged, but large parts of the interior were redesigned in a variety of tastes and styles, leading the palace to be described as a "19th-century palace inspired by a model in Rococo style".
In 1905, the Bloody Sunday massacre occurred when demonstrators marched toward the Winter Palace, but by this time the Imperial Family had chosen to live in the more secure and secluded Alexander Palace at Tsarskoe Selo and returned to the Winter Palace only for formal and state occasions. Following the February Revolution of 1917, the palace was for a short time the seat of the Russian Provisional Government, led by Alexander Kerensky. Later that same year, the palace was stormed by a detachment of Red Army soldiers and sailors-a defining moment in the birth of the Soviet state.

Well, 'taste' is shaped by our social, economical and so on. In movies a specific women and men are choosen because of someone who appreciate their physical features and made it a standard of beauty and same goes for architecture. The bigger you were the more they would love your work

This is truly awe-inspiring. In a way, one might wish (at least I do) that the Romanovs had been wiser, more compassionate, and more generous to their subjects. Terribly sad. Nicholas was so insecure he sought counsel through his uncle and his uncle's sons who were thoroughly arrogant and believed in autocratic rule. So much suffering could have been avoided had Nicholas, who really loved Russia and it's people, only had a stronger will. Many horrible things were done in his name and not by his bidding. Heavy lies the head that wears a crown indeed.

You have to remember the Russian Imperial Court numbered in the thousands; dozens of them were on constant attendance with the family, so they lived int he palace as well. That doesn't include the thousands of servants and craftsman that cleaned and kept the palace running, or the soldiers that guarded it.

Paul, at the turn of the 20th century Russia was undergoing a huge transformation in almost every aspect of it's society. The Royal Family lead efforts to help in times of want; and, in particular Grand Duchess Elizabeth was revered as a saint because of her work/her sisters with the poor and underprivileged. Later when Lenin came to power an entire class of Russian farmers were eliminated--Kulaks. Perhaps a million people fled Russia for their lives after the Lenin Revolution; and, it has only been in recent times that reconciliation has begun between the deep divisions in Russian society. I, for one, am so pleased to see the Russian Orthodox Church regain it's prominent place in Russian society; old churches reopened, and, especially dear to my heart to see the last Imperial Family honored as saints by the Church for their faithfulness to their faith and to Russia. They deeply loved Russia and died in a bloodbath along with countless thousands of others. Czar Nicholas II, sadly, was a weak ruler, but no one can doubt his loyalty and deep love for Russia. Slowly, the great heritage and traditions of Russia are being restored and honored by her people. You spoke about people starving in the streets; well, you are partly correct because in the winter of 17-18 it was so cold that the trains could not move as they were frozen on the railroad tracks. No one that I know of has never said that Russia is not cold in the winter--just ask Napoleon!

Immediately upon the death of Alexander II, his son removed the family to the Gotchina palace (more of a fortress) for increased security. Security staff, sailors and servants totaled approx. 2000 to protect them and to see to their needs. They lived in military barracks there until suitable rooms could be made. Nicholas and Alexandra did use the Alexander palace as well as the Winter palace. HIH Olga, the Tzar's younger sister maintained a house within walking distance feeling that staying at the Winter palace, too, would be intrusive.

@@SymphonyBrahms Yes, but they resided there (and elsewhere) from about 1895-1904, then resided at the Alexander Palace, as you said. The Grand Duchess Olga writes of having lunch with them there frequently at the Winter Palace, so often in fact that her brother built a suitable nearby residence for her as a gift. Olga thought it too extravagant. Of course, Alexander III moved out immediately with the death of his father and took his family to the Gatchina Palace which is more of a fortress. They lived in the barracks until suitable apartments could be prepared.
