I think this is going to become my new favourite video of yours! I don't buy Trackmaster, but I was beginning to warm to the idea of Trackmaster 2 in recent months, as I could see why the fast-paced actiony design could appeal to kids. This set, however, seem to show that Mattel are still exhibiting incompetence with these sets. There seems to be a huge dissonance between the Thomas & Friends TV series and the toylines, even though everything is owned by Mattel. A few years ago we had excellent Thomas merchandise, but with a weak TV show. Nowadays, the TV show is by far the best aspect of the Thomas brand, whilst the merchandise is cheap and flawed. The TV Series nowadays is a down to earth, entertaining series about railways and how they work. And yet this train set discourages the use of rolling stock? Engines don't go around pulling nothing! Kids want their toy engines to pull long trains! Eventually we'll get to a point where the Trackmaster playsets will only work with the engines they come bundled with! You make a great point about train simulator apps and the like. Mattel seem to be admitting defeat with their recent Thomas toys; rather than put up a decent fight with the apps, they're cheapening their toys in order to maximise profits from lower sales. What Mattel ought to do is find out what kids like about the train apps and make something that offers a similar but advantageous experience in physical form. I've heard you say that some of these free train apps allow people to build their own railway. Maybe Mattel should make a new Thomas range (or re-market an existing one) with an emphasis on world building? It's a thought.
Rexeljet Amazing comment, I very much like how you see what's going on. The toy companies are in absolute panic stations as they struggle to deal with the ipad generation of children who's need for real toys is far less than generations before them. Looks like tiny nice smaller toys are working (notice how the blind bag toys are taking over), but downsized toys that used to be epic are a fail move. The most difficult aspect for Mattel / Hasbro and even Lego is how do you compete with things that are free, or even inexpensive and awesome games like Minecraft. I have always thought pretty soon we will start to see free toys be part of the deal, or at least toys that are far less expensive than now. I think the toy companies need to go back to basic's, good large classic toys, things that make you go WOW, far less toy branding bloat. I bet the toy companies will try to Borgize toys to have them interact with apps. Sure some of these toys have appeared but every time the app gameplay is far more awesome than the toys linked to the app. Classic example is Telepods. Those Telepods playsets were some of the worst toys I have looked at. I'll be quiet straight up here, I bet in the next 10 years the toy aisles and toy companies will suffer huge reductions and continued falling profits and share prices. Because I go to the toy stores every week I see the disturbing quiet around toys now. I also see 40%off Fisher Price toys and that's happening to try to clear old stock that does not sell. I definitely would not go out and buy a toy shop today, I know a few specialized toy stores who are really feeling the pinch of the ipad / swipe generation, and as adults it's difficult to understand this effect unless you have a small child in this zone. I have witnessed for myself how much time and fun my son has with free apps. Basically he only see's toys because I look at them on TH-cam. It would be very prudent for me to become a Stampy styled lets play TH-cam channel, because getting real interest in toys is becoming more difficult than a few years ago.
You know, that idea of emphasizing building your own railway? That’s pretty much exactly what Tomy did. Look at how they designed their sets and packs, how they design the backs of boxes to show ways to expand the sets, you’ll see exactly that. And that’s before Trackmaster.
so funny story. I saw this set on clearance for $10 at Walmart. it wasn't due to the poor quality over all. It was because Thomas was missing. They were still willing to sell it without Thomas. WTF
Wow... I'm so glad I didn't purchase this set for Christmas. And speaking of rolling stock. I know a way to make the wagons look more appealing by adding some little marker detail to them.

And this is why I avoid buying TrackMaster 2. It's always about the money. Not the consumer's enjoyment when getting these sets. How come Mattel can't test these engines that are pulling rolling stock on this Snowy Mountain set in the first place? Speaking of the rolling stock, why do they have to reduce the size? I don't know if it's because it will help the engines get up steep hills. But for some reason, the motorized engines managed to climb up the hills with only 1 to 2 trucks. And also, there's a repainted version of this set called the "Mudslide Mountain Set".
I have the Mudslide Mountain Set. I've notice when you take out the Mountain from the Playset I works rather well with Rolling Stock of Tender Engines.

Wow, that could have been a cool playset, if it worked..... Its good that you brought this to TH-cam. We praise the toy company's when they get things right (like the minis) but we also have to criticise when they get it wrong. As for that App you showed at the end, I have that on my ipad! So I can certainly understand the appeal!

Wow that's an awesome rubber chicken!! So big! Looks like the locking mechanism isn't strong enough... and with the tiny clearance of the new TrackMaster stuff, no surprises he still gets stuck. Agree with you, these 'Danger' playsets often seem to be very exclusive in their function, and don't work well with other locos/wagons etc. A great example was the Tale of The Brave Set (The one you found at Costco), like it looked good but only Thomas and 1 wagon could work on it before the playset would end in confusion and delay...
***** I feel there is a difference between trains that crash as part of the fun play Vs from poor toy design. This set has poor toy design. That costoc set was to me very impressive cost wise and my son LOVED it. Especially when the wagons went crazy across the top of the playset, it was a large and interesting playset to play with. I should put this small Snowy Mountain playset on a table and see how my son plays with it, I know he will want to add wagons as I did, but will he enjoy the tunnel jam every time Thomas goes around. Possibly the best thing to do with this playset is throw away the stupid mountain piece. It's one of the worst Thomas sets I have ever purchased, and I have seen many now.

Great video Leo, I can understand your frustration. It does appear Trackmaster do not thoroughly test these new sets, they are trying to build in more "play value", but ending up with less, with too many failures. Love your sense of humour despite your distress, chicken is funny too... : ) Cliff.
Really liked this review Leo. Sort of "snapped me out of it" with all these so called "review" channels out there, when all they do is pucker up to the company they're talking about. I feel like I was starting to be desensitized in a way to real, honest reviews on products. Good to know there's at least one honest to god passionate toy reviewer on here. I don't just consider you that by the way, you put out much more amazing content to be labeled as such. The only sad thing about watching this I got (besides the obvious lack of brains the people who designed this have) was that we didn't get to see what you were going to do with the Thomas shell and diesel ten. I hope we see a glimpse of that in a future video perhaps.
Brick ByBrick I will do the icy effect and snowy Diesel in another video, but as it was this video becomes a total waste of time. Why do something funky on a playset which does not deserve it. When I had to fix that main feature piece I thought OK, I will let this pass, we all make mistakes. But when I saw how poorly thought out the avalanche lever was I thought OK, obviously those who make this toy never even considered how children play with these toy trains. I wonder if those who were in the development team were sacked. In my line of work If I made mistakes like this I would be shown the door real fast. But as always, this is only a toy and it seems toys can have very poor designs and that's deemed normal, how can a child ever complain?. Sadly I see too much of this and from now on I'm not going to hide the ugly facts of very poor toy designs. Mattel need to micromanage this far more and make sure stuff up sets like this never get released. HiT Entertainment need to also look very carefully at what Mattel are doing with the Thomas toys, in the end it's their brand which gets damaged.
Leo, I think you got just a tad bit upset toward the end... Well, how I would see it, I'd just take that huge lever in the blue mountain piece that gave you such difficulty with the cars, and totally remove it, and not have the operating parts of that set work. I think the imagination coming from your son would be so much better in that case of the set. Maybe you could try that, and let your son play with it like that? It would be a nice follow up video on this set with your son's POV of it.
I would make tons of references to Thomas' sister show TUGS that I can make with this set, including 1: Big Mickey 2: China Clay truck right behind the engine (they always did that with Puffa) (you put the truck with the curved front and back in the front of the train and that's what I mean by the china clay truck) Leo you will not get this at all but if you like check out the show TUGS, it has some of your style in it (not an ad)
This is why you shouldn't make cheap little light wagons. They come off of the rails and cause frustration happily shown to us by Leo xD this can be a problem in the model railway community aswell, as some cheap wagons float between the others.

My son loves your videos, loves watching the Thomas trackmaster reviews and seeing new track sets available. I watched this video with him this morning and at first I thought the set was very neat but after seeing the whole review, we will definitely be staying away from this one! I could see him throwing the whole set when the cars repeatedly get caught up on the mechanism. I imagine a train with a tender would cause the same problem and I know he would be playing with both on a set like this.

They are. It's another lazy way that Mattel/Fisher-Price cuts costs with the Thomas Trackmaster range. This set is also sold as the "Mudslide Mountain" set, and it is the same set as this one, the only difference being the color of the plastic on the track and mountain (brown instead of white) and the detail on Thomas (also brown).

I bought this set but now the snowy mountain's ice effect doesnt work anoymore that i lost it, so rolling stock can now go through the mountain. I also only bought this set for the snowy thomas anyways.
I never saw the point of the mountain. It's like there was suppose to be more to it but it was taken away for cost. And track master two is just now worth it I think.

OMG what unbelievable junk! I bought the Track master trains and sets back around 2007, when the tracks were blue TOMY tracks... then they went to the better brown tracks. In stores, they had lots of low-cost engine choices, car-sets to buy. Remember the various box cars, tankers for milk and oil, etc... now its these dinky little cars. It seems to me, that the new engines look worse than those made almost 10 years earlier... which had paint and actual doors molds on them -rather than STICKERS which children can pull off, damage, etc. I won't be buying any new track master toys for my new baby when he gets older. Also these new ACTION sets are plain useless. And its not just the Track Masters... a LOT of toys today are made with almost ZERO play-ability! Look at all the Transformer toys that (get this) DON'T transform! Remember when Star Wars sets where completely open? Today, you snap characters onto sets, pull a lever that makes them rotate or shoot something... no using of the HANDS to make characters move etc. Where is the imagination? I see that with Lego Girl sets as well, in which the girl-characters are given names.
Maybe if they moved the trigger for the avalanche to be like the one that moves the one curved track to the side. Just make the train go on it and boom. No problems.

I realized that since the freight cars got pushed off the rails, then NONE of the tender engines can go on that set. Hit toy company isnt thinking things through.

You will never have that problem with the old classic tomy Thomas play set or rolling stock.

I bought this set but now the snowy mountain's ice effect doesnt work anoymore that i lost it, so rolling stock can now go through the mountain.
I also only bought this set for the snowy thomas anyways.

I never saw the point of the mountain. It's like there was suppose to be more to it but it was taken away for cost. And track master two is just now worth it I think.

Cars are awesome! They should have done a few tests of the toy before signing off on mass production, obviously this never happened.

Wow, honestly, I don't understand...why the toy companies don't test their toys with all possible scenarios? It would save them the embarrassment. Fail fail! OMG what unbelievable junk! I bought the Track master trains and sets back around 2007, when the tracks were blue TOMY tracks... then they went to the better brown tracks. In stores, they had lots of low-cost engine choices, car-sets to buy. Remember the various box cars, tankers for milk and oil, etc... now its these dinky little cars. It seems to me, that the new engines look worse than those made almost 10 years earlier... which had paint and actual doors molds on them -rather than STICKERS which children can pull off, damage, etc.
I won't be buying any new track master toys for my new baby when he gets older. Also these new ACTION sets are plain useless. And its not just the Track Masters... a LOT of toys today are made with almost ZERO play-ability! Look at all the Transformer toys that (get this) DON'T transform! Remember when Star Wars sets where completely open? Today, you snap characters onto sets, pull a lever that makes them rotate or shoot something... no using of the HANDS to make characters move etc. Where is the imagination?
I see that with Lego Girl sets as well, in which the girl-characters are given names.

Maybe you have to put some loads or weight in to the trucks to make it work. By the look the trucks are as light as a feather
Maybe if they moved the trigger for the avalanche to be like the one that moves the one curved track to the side. Just make the train go on it and boom. No problems.

Do you not realize that you can cut off the latch? You have the equipment to do it, or just remove the tall part of the set. :/
I realized that since the freight cars got pushed off the rails, then NONE of the tender engines can go on that set. Hit toy company isnt thinking things through.
