A lot of people become "rangers", because they want to "help others".
But, as commendable as that may be, it is not good enough, if you truly want to help others (and, obviously, yourself).
You have to do more than that
Hugo Weaving's performance as Lord Elrond is one of the great gems of the LOTR trilogy. I can't imagine anyone else in that role.
Not a fan of it - the acting is good, but so, so different from the book. Elrond is kind, lordly but kind in the books and he loved Aragorn dearly. Movie-Elrond seems perpetually angry and a little selfish.

Those were the last words of Aragons mother in the books. Aragon's sindarin name was Estel (meaning Hope). It can be interpreted as she was giving hope (her son Estel) to the people and has kept none for herself

Look at how humble Aragorn is. When he is gifted the sword, he doesn't see power and rulership. Instead he sees the sword as a tool that can help him win the war and save middle earth. If all of the leaders in our world were like Aragorn we would have world peace. The perfect personality and character of a leader.
Well said buddy. I really like the way you interpreted Aragorn's character and greatness. He is the true definition of a noble man who possesses the attributes of leadership. For only a man with no desire should be the leader because he would rule not in his favour, but the favour of others.
Perfect leader right up until the banks told Aragorn his war for middleearth put the kingdom in so much debt he'll have to let go of at least half of his staff, and raise taxes to cover the interest.
Yes, Aragorn is humble. However, humility is also to know who you really are and to assume it. That means your qualities and your flaws. That's why I prefer the Aragorn of the books. He knows he is the King. He wants to claim the throne of Gondor and restore Arator. He does not shy away before his responsabilities as last heir to Numenor as Jackson's Aragorn does. But he does not flaunt his title and his rights to belittle his companions either.
***** Interesting. For me, I always saw four heroes to LotR.
1) Frodo as a Christ figure : the one who willingly sacrifices himself for humanity's salvation.
2) Gandalf as the mythic hero : the Odin, the Lone Wanderer, or the Merlin who works wonders and brings wisdom.
3) Aragorn as the arthurian hero : the just King who brings justice and peace to his people after a period of strife. Anduril is his Excalibur ; Minas Tirith, his Camelot.
4) Sam as the "Ti-Jean" of French-Canadian legends (you certainly have another name for it) : the common man of no visible talents who is put in a dire situation, succeeds and makes a better living for himself and his people.
That's actually not how Aragorn is in the book, Jackson's interpretation was as a 20th century hero, one that doubts himself at the beginning and has to go on a journey of self-realization.

I love how Theoden, although a mighty king himself, stays standing while talking to a sitting Elrond, and then as Aragorn walks in, he just says humbly "I take my leave" and he walks out. He undertands perfectly that he is in the presence of two individuals vastly superior to him in terms of power and significance, and that they are about to discuss a matter that can possibly define the whole Third Age. This scene is not from the book, but Peter Jackson did a brilliant job with it.
Well remember that Aragorn and Elrond and all the wedding guests of Minas Tirith bowed to Frodo, in this time line of events we can assume Theoden owes Elrond for giving his people a chance. Also don't forget that Elrond has seen the future and we don't know what conversation they just had in private, but something seems to happen to Theoden between this point and when he dies where it seems like he has a determination which comes from knowing something from this conversation. Elrond is here to intervene in the world, and perhaps all we saw was his intervention with Aragorn...

When Elrond said to Aragorn, that they were outnumbered, he really meant it. It is not just the Corsair fleet that will attack from the river, there were just sooo many more forces that the free people of Middle Earth had to face. If you read Tolkiens books, the Siege of Gondor is just one of the battles, there were at least 3 other battles took place in the northern hemisphere of Middle Earth. Sauron actually called out a simultaneous attack not just to Southern Kingdom of Gondor but also to the Northern kingdoms of Erebor and Dale ( in Battle of Dale), Sauron sent a large contingent of Easterlings of Rhun to attack Dale and Erebor). The King under the Mountain , Dain II Ironfoot and King Brand of Dale ( the grandson of Bard the bowman who killed dragon Smaug) led a combined forces of men and dwarves to defend the city.
Also another forces from Dol Guldur were sent to attack Lorien and Mirkwood. These two battles ( Battle under the trees & Battle of Dol Guldur, where Thranduil, Galadriel and Celeborn, leading wood elves to defended their lands).
This is why we didnt see elves or dwarves helping men ( Gondor ) in Battle of Pelennor Fields, Its because Elves and Dwarves are also busy defending their lands. At least Gondor got helped from Rohan and undead army. It's quite unfortunate, that we didnt get to see these other Battles in big screen, because I am sure it will be just as epic.
I really wished I could see Battle of Dale, where you can see the final Last stand of a much older King Dain Ironfoot, he sadly died in that Battle defending the body of King Brand. Both died fighting to their last breath.

Travis Smith Those two movies were directed by same director, but I agree, the Hobbit had too much CGI scenes, they should have balanced it , just like when they did LoTR. LoTR does have some CGI in it but its not too much, its quite balanced.
The chances of other battles occurring are pretty slim. Christopher Tolkien didn't like the Lord of the Rings movies or the The Hobbit, but he couldn't do anything because his father had sold the rights previously (iirc). Which is why another film like the Silmarillion are pretty much not going to happen, unless the rights gets transferred somehow. Anyways, The Hobbit movies weren't bad, the only reason why it seemed so rushed was because the original director backed out last minute (iirc). Which is why Peter Jackson had to step in.

I seriously cannot see any other actor being Aragorn. Viggo did it so smoothly, so brilliantly that he is also one of the reasons I love the movies.
Besides the Rings of Power, Anduril was quite possibly the single most deadly weapon on Middle Earth. In anyone else’s hands it would’ve been a mere sword, but in the hands of Elendil’s heir, it held all of the might and authority of Man. The magnitude of this gesture can’t be overstated. By reforging Narsil into Anduril and giving it Aragorn, the elves were giving him their blessing to become King and to lead Middle Earth into a new future. They formally ceded their place to Man with that move, assessing that Aragorn was worthy of that gift. There is so much subtext to this simple act of Elrond giving Aragorn a sword that it’s mind-boggling.
Now take the book version and interpret that...
It is so difficult to portray a likeable leader. The portrayal of Aragorn in the movies is just so good.

This has a duel meaning as Aragorn was given the name Estel which means hope. But also the fact that he will unite the men of the west and usher in the dominion of men.
Ironically Aragorn in the books takes a moment with Pippin and sits down, smoking his pipe, declaring "I am both Strider and Dunadan, I belong to both Gondor and the North." He will always be a Ranger.
Actually I think this is a reference to the defeated Kingdom of Arnor which isn't mentioned at all in the LOTR films, and hinted at in the Hobbit's first and second movies (though I have major issues with these references I'll save you that rant as this post is already long, fair warning).
"Ranger" History:
He was only a ranger because his forefathers split the old north kingdom or Arnor, which was the seat of the High King of Arnor and Gondor the first being Elendil, and only other High King was Isildur who reigned for just 2 years and was slain. Then Arnor and Gondor became disjointed, the North being ruled by the line of Isildur, the south being ruled by the line of Isildur's brother Anarion. The northern Kingdom again fractured and splintered into 3 separate regions, and then those 3 lesser kingdoms were destroyed one by one by the Witch King and the Army of Angmar as he cunningly turned one kingdom against the other then invaded and wiped out most of the Northern people. This defeat forced the Northern line of Kings to go into hiding and so they began to call themselves Chieftain of the Dunedain. Edain means man with long life, a gift from Valinor to the Numenoreans after the War of the Wrath at the ending of the first age. Dunedain does not mean ranger, it means Man/Men of the West, West being Out of the Sea or the Isle of Numenor. The Numenoreans had always considered themselves the Lords of Men, and even when all thrones in Middle Earth were vacant of Numenorean blood, the Chieftans of the Dunedain still considered it their duty to lead men as best they could against the Dark Lord and his many threats. The rangers of the Dunedain are the Numenorean descendants and what's left of that old North Kingdom, and why there's still a claim to the thrones of the lands of Arnor and Gondor. The title of rangers was given to them by the lesser men living in the North as they considered them to be a strange and wild folk, seen at weird times for unknown reasons.
Elrond's Involvement:
Because the first king of Numenor was also Elrond's twin brother Elros (being half elven but choosing the gift of men (death) instead of elven imortality), the Chiefts would often be fostered in Rivendell as technically speaking, Elrond's blood flowed in the veins of all the Kings of Numenorean Kingdoms. This is why Elrond has possession of the heir looms of the Kingdoms in the first place, including the Sceptre of Annúminas of the Northern Kingdom again not mentioned in the movie. It is this scepter which unites the North and the South by right, and Elrond with holds it from Aragorn after the Sword is reforged on the condition the he must first defeat Sauron, rise to the throne, and then he will be given the title of high King and permission to marry his daughter Arwen.
My little rant about this scene the trilogy plot hole with the sword:
This scene is an uneeded addition if Aragorn was given the sword before he left Rivendell with the rest of the Fellowship. But as most movies based on books would have it, a very big plot hole is developed while writing the screen play. First and foremost, Aragorn should have been in possession of Narsil and then later Anduril from the start. I would have personally been OK with the Sword being in Rivendell before the forming of the Fellowship as it was tied to the scene depicting the first downfall of Sauron, but Aragorn should have definitely had it there after as in the book there were plenty of key scenes that spoke directly to the importance of who carried the sword. Also Aragorn's battle cry was Elendil, his forefather, and the last owner of the sword before it was broken. Also and more disturbing, Elrond in the movie does a very dangerous thing in the Two Towers extended edition, which is totally out of character, when he chases off Aragorn and tries to convince his daughter through dishonest and deceptive methods to accompany him to Valinor. I say this because Elves die one of two ways, by wounds in battle and heart break. Clearly in the film Arwen's heart begins to crack as she is forced to make the decision to give up on Aragorn's quest until she sees a vision of her future son. Now this scene conflicts with another involving an Elf and heart ache/heart break. Legolas hints at how treacherous heart ache can be for elves when he refuses to speak about Gandalf's death while the remaining Fellowship is in Lothlorien. He refuses to speak because as he says "I have not the heart to tell you, for me the grief is still too near." Meaning that obviously when it comes to matters of the heart, Elves must be very careful and probably have to meditate about what troubles them clear their minds and or make peace with it so as not to spiral into a depression and die. Elrond risks killing his own daughter, while he is supposedly trying to save her from death by love. I just couldn't get down with the film version of the Love of Aragorn and Arwen because of the character destruction of Elrond. Elrond is probably the most encouraging and forgiving character in the book, and is technically a King himself, through blood and marriages he could have laid a claim to the High Kingship of the Noldor Elves, which is why Gil-galad the last High King gave him his ring of power having no sons of his own. Elrond instead chooses to remain humble and set up his dwelling of Rivendell, only answering to the tile of Lord instead of King. This all means that Elrond is wise and would have never pulled the stunt he pulled with Arwen, or spoke down to or about Aragorn the way he does on film.
Back to Aragorn:
Strider was an insult that Aragorn embraced, because it helped to mask his true identity. He was a man of many names, especially once he rose to the throne. He was Aragorn son of Arathorn, Estel meaning hope while he was raised in Rivendell, 16th Chieftain of the Dunedain, Thorongil the alias he used in the South, Strider the alias he used and went by in the North, 26th King of Arnor, 35th King of Gondor, 3rd King of the High Kingdom of Arnor and Gondor, 1st High King of the Reunited Kingdom, called King Ellessar, Telcontar. Being a ranger was an attempt to help keep Aragorn's movements, missions, and identity secret, until the time was felt to be right for him to make his presence known, which he does during the War of the Ring when he begins to openly declare himself to friend and foe, by use of the sword which he carries with him through out all the books making this scene unnecessary in the movie, or the Orthanc Palantir which provokes Sauron into early and unnecessary action thereby helping to lead to Sauron's downfall and fulfilling his obligation to himself as the rightful heir to the thrones of the North and the South, his forefathers by restoring their lost Kingdoms, and to Elrond to obtain the scepter and win Arwen's hand in marriage.
It may not be explicitly named, but it is mentioned in some form. In the movies, Aragorn talks of the Dunedain when Eowen asks how old he is. He says that "There are few of us left. The Northern Kingdom was destroyed long ago."

Yes, Elrond is gifted with foresight. In the movie it was Arwen who told him to re-forge the sword, but in the book the elves of Rivendell re-forged it before the Fellowship left for the Quest.

This is one of the best and well-directed scenes ever and movie genre kudos to the two actors who played the well done and Aragon who is so humbled on receiving the sword and becoming the Kings of all Kings to be the shepherd of humanity to come

When I first saw this scene, it immediately startled me that everything inside of Theoden's tent (filled with all its Banners & Rohan Symbols) was shaking and rattling from the strong wind, as if unstable. It creates such an unsettling feeling as if even the King himself is "shaken" and at risk in these desperate times. I can't recall another movie, in which this atmosphere had been portrayed so accurately. If intended by Peter Jackson or not, it implies such a strong symbolism for Theoden's people facing a dark and uncertain future before the final battle against evil.

I admit I never read the books but at least from the movies I feel like Elrond was like MVP of all these wars.
There are scenes that can make you cry, get goosebumps, that can make you feel younger and stronger but all of them fall to the Company of this Moment. Memories crashing on Rock's like the ocean waves upon the shoreline to your heart, nothing Compares to the moment of one memory that melts the Rock's and creates a Bridge to one's soul.

If I remember correctly from the documentaries, the film makers decided to have Arwen's life become tied to the Ring--as a little more incentive for Aragorn, I think, and possibly to add more tension to the story. I think Sauron saw into Aragorn's heart when Aragorn looked into the palentir, and he saw Arwen there--Aragorn's weak spot, if you will. The idea was that Sauron's growing power began to drain Arwen's life energy. I think it was Sauron's attempt to weaken Aragorn.

Aragorn is probably my favorite character out of the Trilogy. He’s a loner when we were first meet him as The Strider/Ranger.

Correct. In the books, Aragorn acquires it much earlier when the party first arrives at Rivendell. It is then that the shards of Narsil are reforged into Anduril, Flame of the West. Aragorn is given the sword, and he wields it from that point forward. This occurs in the first book (The Fellowship).
Narsil, the sword originally wielded by Elendil, was crafted way back during the first age by the dwarf Telchar, who was a legendary smith of Nogrod, an ancient dwarf city in the blue mountains.
This scene is 10 years old and looks like it was filmed yesterday. This trilogy is a testament to the incredible talent and vision of Peter Jackson. ...and it is a different film-- but I loved The Hobbit. It didn't deserve the lukewarm reviews it got.

Elrond is related to everyone, everyone of good anyway. I find that the most interesting thing when it comes to Middle Earth relations, that one person through marriage or blood is literally related to every major good character in the books. Through marriage, Elrond is even related to a Maia, Melian, which means even Gandalf could be a very, very distant relative.

This scene is better when you realize that Elrond of Rivendell is the reluctant father in Law to the boy next door Aragorn who wants to marry his daughter. He tries to break it up, eventually breaks down and recognizes it's going to happen and helps his son in law to be.
He’s lost a lot of family to duty and darkness. Both of his parents, his wife, even his own twin brother (Aragorn’s ancestor). And the sad part is, everything he warns Arwen about is actually true. She will suffer that way, and die in the abandoned, dead field of her grandmother’s domain where she met Aragorn.
Would of been funny if at 2:31 Aragorn takes the sword out and accidently cuts elronds throat or something lol

Aragon had a powerful character , he is a humble leader . Look at his eyes once he received the sword , he sees it as a way to fulfill justice not to slave humanity. I really love this man .
I never noticed it before but the king of rohan in this scene says "by your leave" as he goes which implies he then knows of Aragorns bloodline and that he is technically the heir of Gondor.
In the books Theoden knew Aragorn as the heir to Gondor and Arnor and in the movies Theoden referred to Aragorn as "my lord Aragorn"

I would have split return of the king into two parts and had there be a lot more time put into this.
Originally they were only going to give them the budget and schedule for TWO films, but after seeing their early work gave them plans for three films. Thank god for that at least, and the extended editions.
Later Harry Potter, Hunger Games and Hobbit proved that splitting movies don´t work
Quite a few things in the story changed due to this scene, firstly it wasn't Elrond who came, it was his two sons, a few elves and the rangers of the dunedain (of which Aragorn is chief), and they helped fight in the battle of pelennor. The other big change is that Aragorn actually had the sword before the fellowship set out from Rivendell. Some of these things were changed for the epic effect in the movie others were changed because the characters weren't needed for the plot to move forward.
