  • Volčji Potok Arboretum is the flourishing oasis of the Central Slovenia. Move into the green, away from the hustle and bustle of the city.
Volčji Potok Arboretum is one of the most important architectural heritage gardens in Slovenia. In 1999, it was declared a cultural monument of national importance. The pearl of the Slovenian garden culture stretches along the streams and meadows south of Kamnik. With nearly 5000 tree and plant species, it is wonderful in all seasons. Every year, from mid-April to early May attention is given to the tulips, which make the park especially vivid and colourful. Visitors can admire many other exhibitions. June is rose month. This extraordinary flower deserves special attention. The Arboretum’s collection features over 1100 rose varieties. Let yourself be beguiled by these summer belles. Rose gardens at Volčji Potok are a part of plant collections of the national arboretum in Slovenia. Arboretum Volčji Potok extends over 85 hectares and is located 20 kilometres from Ljubljana.
For the time being they grow 1.178 rose cultivars. They create the collection following two main goals. The first goal is contemporary disease resistant roses, which thrive with no or very little chemical support. The second focus are rose varieties bred eastwards of the line Trieste -Szczecin, forming a unique Central- and East-European collection.
The collection of roses in the Arboretum covers both historical roses and modern disease-resistant varieties. One can also view the wild and semi-wild roses and collections of old historic roses, beach rose varieties (Rosa rugosa), hybrid musk roses and climbing roses. The most numerous is the group of floribunda roses, followed by the most majestic garden roses of all, the hybrid tea roses.
Perennials are a group of ornamental plants that delight the eye from early spring to winter. In July, when the park is decked out in green after the spring flowering fades, it is time for the perennials to take centre stage.
Even in peak summer, the flower beds in the Arboretum remain in full bloom.
One of the most recognizable parts of Volčji Potok Arboretum is a French garden, designed by the former owner of the estate, Leon Souvan.
A large children's playground in the park is a paradise for children. They can enjoy the trampoline, slides, climbing walls and slides. Families will also look forward to a special exhibition of dinosaurs and whales in their natural size.
A memorable experience is to tour the park with our tourist road train.
The Volčji Potok Arboretum was opened to the public in 1952. It originally formed part of the Souvan family estate in 1885, which was taken over by the University of Ljubljana in 1952 and legally declared a place of cultural and natural heritage of national importance. Now independent of the university, it is the most visited botanical garden in Slovenia and in recent years has become well known for its spring flower shows. The arboretum is primarily a botanical garden for woody plants, the only one in Slovenia.
    History.
Trees and bushes belong to the basic botanical species from Europe, North America, and Asia as well as to cultivars that have been raised for ornamental purposes. The richest collections of species are maple, linden trees, birch and beech. There is also a collection of cultivars of fan-maple (Acer palmatum), scaly conifers, rhododendrons, and roses, and a collection of evergreen deciduous trees.
