  • Today we explore a little bit of Ambon and along the way, I do my best to share a little bit about its history. Ambon has somewhat of a dark and turbulent history when it comes to European and Japanese colonization, wars, local civil unrest, etc. There have many horrific instances throughout the years that have taken place in Ambon. So in an effort to improve and change its image, Ambon is striving to turn Ambon into a place of peace and tolerance, in my opinion. One way you see this is with monuments, like the World's Peace Gong right in the middle of the city. You see, "the city of peace" and "Ambon, the city of music", just about everywhere you go. Sure, it doesn't erase the past, but it does in my opinion, encourage the people that they have the ability to build a brighter future for their city and its people.
After stopping by the World's Peace Gong, I went over to the park across the street. That is where I met Nike, a young man that is in the process of becoming an Indonesian soldier. He was a lot of help in explaining a few things around the area, particularly Pattimura, an Indonesian national hero. From there, I just went for a stroll to the port and the market around the area. I didn't realize how far it stretched. It's a long way!
Eventually, I get tired of walking and getting blasted by the sun, so I jumped in an angkot(bus) and headed to the Ambon City Center to meet my friend from Jakarta. I didn't stay long, and she wanted to meet somewhere else so I jumped right back in an angkot and headed back toward the area I started.

If I'm not mistaken, Pattimura fought the Dutch at 1816, right after British gave back the island to the Dutch, but the Dutch east indies company is already bankrupt that why British is in Maluku, so when they gave it back to Dutch, it went under new Colonial ruler directly ruled by kingdom of Netherlands (Dutch east indies the colony, not the trading company)
And Pattimura begin rebellion because this new Colonial power is harsher than the British one that he been served before
He won, and declared as leader of Moluccan people, but ended up betrayed by local king who loyal to Colonial power and ended up executed

Actually, the Pattimura war was in 1817. After the defeat of Napoleon in 1815 the British handed over the territorial possessions of the bankrupt V.O.C. to the kingdom of the Netherlands which was only established in 1813.
The Pattimura war was the first in a long line conquest by the Kingdom of the Netherlands which led to full colonization of virtually all of what is currently known as Indonesia. The Dutch were shocked by the amount of casualties on their side and eventually had to resort to using native Malukan fighters, by forcing them or by using material incentives, to be able to quell the rebellion.
As a result of this war, and because of the Malukan warriors prowess in war, the Dutch wanted Malukan men to enlist in their army and eventually rearranged central Maluku society in such a way that it was turned into a virtual soldier factory that lasted until Indonesia gained control over the islands (with a 3 year pause during the Japanese occupation of the islands).
As a result of the Dutch rearrangement of society, Malukan soldiers were sent all over the Dutch East-Indies and were involved in most of the colonial wars.
If you’d like to learn more about history, I can connect you to historians in Maluku.

    • @AxeDatcm
      @AxeDatcm 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

@@awometeta933 ok, my comment is just me remembering reading in some paper, about Moluccan revolt against Dutch and why Pattimura is executed
From what I reading the Moluccas starting revolt after the British return the island to the Dutch, the reason is economic and oppression, the Moluccas start to realize not much prospect fro them in European spice market, and also the relaxation of rule by the British during it's occupation resulting is apprehension when they knew the Dutch is back
So a revolt broke out, and Pattimura ended up executed for treason, after betrayed by a local king
It's an old paper I read in early 2000s so don't remember it much

    • @awometeta933
      @awometeta933 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@AxeDatcm I wasn’t trying to diss you.
You’re not wrong when it comes to economics and oppression being major incentives for the rebellion to occur, the Dutch revoking of privileges for native soldiers and their plans to cutbacks on (Christian) religious education were also major grievances among Malukan rebels. The “local” king was the sultan of Ternate, who sent Alifuru from his sultanate to fight on the side of the Dutch, so you’re not very wrong there either. However, there were also Alifuru warriors from central Maluku fighting on the Dutch side.
However: We have to realize that there is a difference in being ruled by a Dutch multinational company (the V.O.C.) or a newly established nation-state, namely the Kingdom of the Netherlands, with a desire to conquer land. That kingdom is to whom the British handed over the colonies, instead of the bankrupt VOC. The Pattimura war was, and correct me if I’m wrong, the first colonial war that was waged by the Kingdom of the Netherlands. After this war a long line of colonial wars were fought all over the Dutch East-Indies. Considering the part Malukans played in Dutch administration a century later, the fact that large scale enlistment of Malukan men in the Dutch Colonial army only occurred as a result of the Dutch rearrangement of Malukan society, and realizing that this rearranging of society should be seen as a result of the Pattimura war it’s baffling to me how the Pattimura war seems to be reduced to somewhat of a mere footnote in Indonesian, and Dutch, history.

The World Peace Gong which was established in Ambon as a symbol of the end of the civil war that occurred in Ambon in 1999-2002/2005 not for WWII
Thomas Matulessy was given the title Kapitan Pattimura, which means ruler/leader of war for the Moluccans. So Thomas Matulessy and Kapitan Pattimura are the same person.
Statue of Thomas Matulessy in the middle of Ambon city was remake(looks like Javanese not Moluccan), the original statue is in Siwalima Museum 🤠

Until now, the image of Kapitan Pattimura that is already popular in Indonesian society is Pattimura with a mustache and holding a machete, sometimes holding a shield or salawaku.
This image of Pattimura with a thick mustache is also printed on the 2000 Rp. 1000 banknote.
Pattimura is seen with a mustache, short wavy hair, and a plain shirt with buttons on his chest.
According to Des Alwi's book 'History of Maluku: Banda Naira, Ternate, Tidore, and Ambon' on page 574, this version of Kapitan Pattimura painter is Latuputi from LEKRA (Institute of People's Culture) in 1951.
The historical researcher of Kapitan Pattimura's version of Hulaliu Island Haruku Island, Heppy Leunard Lelapary, commented on this picture.
"The issue of Kapitan Pattimura who has a mustache is a sketch, so that it is similar to the physical appearance of Maluku men," said Heppy.
The second version is the version proposed by the Matulessy family from Hulaliu Country, Haruku Island.
The descendant of the 6th generation is named Thomas Matulessy (same as his ancestor).
Seen, Thomas Matulessy is described as having round cheekbones. He has short hair and a relatively wide forehead.
This picture is very different from the previously popular version, including the one listed on the Rp 1,000 bill.
According to Thomas, this picture of Thomas Matulessy without a mustache is similar to the version of the drawing by Quirjin Maurits Rudolph (QMR) Ver Huell, a Dutch soldier during Pattimura who was also Pattimura's enemy.
"In 1951, the history team painted the face of Pattimura holding a machete and salawaku, while the face image stored in Hulalui (Haruku Island) is similar to the face painted by (from) Ver Huell, the Dutch war captain," said Thomas.
Whereas Ver Huell's QMR image is on the DBNL (Digital Library for Dutch Literature) website.
QMR Ver Huell's image of Thomas Matulessy is republished in 'Indische Letteren, Jaargang 28'.
You can see the picture of 'Tuwan Thomas Matulesija' by QMR Ver Huell.
This image is kept by the Arnhem Museum of Modern Art. This picture shows Matulessy wearing clothes like the old European military uniforms.
Ver Huell recounts the arrest of Thomas Matulessy in a note entitled 'Memories of a Journey to the East Indies' or 'Herinneringen van eene reis naar de Oost-Indiën'. Thomas Matulessy was arrested in the Siri Sori Country area.

    Howdy, Nick!
Thank you for exploring and showing the Ambon City. I am originally from Ambon but currently at College Station, TX.
I was surprised when you said to the guy (the dried bread seller) that you are from Texas.
Which part of Texas are you from? Maybe we could meet up over coffee and I'll tell you more about Ambon City and the beautiful things about it.

Greets from House Ceram in Netherlands man, what camera you using to vlog? Love to see more of this, would be a nice idea to do a whole Moluccan travel vlog, from Halmahera (North Maluku) through here, all the way to Kei and Aru islands in the South close to Australia. Maluku was NOT part of Indonesia, it has its own culture and people and place not greatly known by American audiences. Sad to see so much Javanese RI Military presence in our beautiful Maluku :( They are an invasive and oppresive force that are there for the Javanese Transmigration Act replacing the indigenous Moluccans with Javanese settlers. So Indonesia did not invade its own country, t hey invaded Maluku just as they invaded Papua Barat and Timor Leste. I would advise you PLEASE not to ask Javanese settlers to explain Moluccan history because I heard alot of misinformation about Pattimura and the independence war. Bandungnese are also not very familiar with the deep history of Maluku and Ambon, but I appreciate Nike his effort to give you a little tour he did his best and stayed politically neutral. I am related to Pattimura and he was part of an independence war of the Moluccan empire such as the one by Moluccan Prince Nuku before him.
Ambon is the city of music - because the indigenous Moluccans who are Melanesian/Darkskinned are naturally born musicians and athletic. So much so that the city itself was dubbed a UNESCO heritage site of Music.
The red bandanas are a symbol of Moluccan heritage and a tribal connection to our Alifuru culture.
