She sounds sweet and both cylinders are close apart from tickover , but thats always a bit of a compromise. Those pipes sound well. I've fitted them to one of my preunit triumphs before and it does transform the sound for the better. Similar to your Norton she sounded more crisp on the uptake under load. Nice one.
Sounds like you are having a fuel starvation issue. If you have the Premiers with the stayup floats you need to set the fuel level not the float level like you do with the old plastic floats.. You use an old drain plug with a nipple and some clear 1/4 fuel line to make a utube. Most Brit bike Amal suppliers have a kit availble or they are on ebay. With the utube zip tied to the side of the carb turn the fuel on and measure how high it comes in the tube. What you are shooting for is about .21" below the top of the float bowl(not the top the gasket). If it is low, take the bowl off and gently bend the metal tangs on float up so that it sits higher in the bowl. With the stay up floats this generally means the top of float is parallel with the top of bowl and slightly proud of the top when it is close. Usually if you get it too high the needle won't close and the carb will drip gas. This may take a few back and forths to get it right but it will make the bike idle a lot better.
It's someone trying to make out they know what they are doing when it comes to motorcycle engines/bikes (sadly in this case a Norton Commando) when in reality he dosen't have a clue. That bike is running badly after he carried out a useless carb mod which has made no improvement what so ever. I wish these types of owners would just admit their limitations and give the bike to someone who actually understands engines.
Nice bike. Sounds good. As a fellow Norton owner, I'm curious about why the rear fender and taillight occasionally bob up and down at idle. It looks like the rear frame member supporting them isn't welded to the main frame tube. Is there something you've modified to cause this?
No sir, it is indeed welded, i did not weld a longer gusset of what is available. I've seen mine as well as others do the same thing. The camera "strobes" the vibration to make it appear like it's slow moving up and down.
@@nicksnorton2340 Interesting. I just hadn't thought I'd seen that movement in any of the other videos of Nortons I've watched, but perhaps, as you suggested, it's a camera effect. In any case, very nice Norton. Enjoy your rides. I know I do on mine 👍.
@@nicksnorton2340 I bought part of an estate the had a bunch of Norton parts that I have been selling on ebay so I been looking on youtube for bikes that I can identify parts that are to same as mine so I was actually looking for specific names like Atlas, Dominator. Commando etc. Thanks
Hi Brian, I had it timed at 28°, I tried advancing further but no good. Pinging, so i moved it back. I've had trouble with idle on this thing ever since i got it running. It goes down, then back up. I found the bowls weren't flat, I modified the carbs with a pick up tube that goes down in the bowl. That stopped the stalling at a stop, but still unsteady idle. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
@@nicksnorton2340 Hi, If the carbs need a pick up tube maybe the float level is low also check for air leaks this will cause lean mixture which will cause erratic idle and pinging. I had a Norton that was leaking air between the the two cylinders, head gasket was blown, does your motorcycle have points or electronic ? .. you can check air leaks around carb flange gaskets with a spray bottle with fuel or metholated spirits, or white spirit whatever they call it in your country. It is difficult finding a problem not being there to hear it run, are you sure the rockers have correct clearance as a riding inlet valve will also cause air leaks. Let me know how you go, I am Australian/ 70 , You get your Commando running right and they are pure fun to ride..
I'll answer in order, I do have the float level set to 0.60 at top of float, i've not checked for air leaks with spirits (will try!) Total fresh rebuild, on second new head gasket. Was flame heated. I have a Pazon unit installed. Just set the rockers, 0.006 intake, 0.008 exhaust. They were a little loose. Going down the road it runs excellent. Pipes aren't burnt. 50+ mpg. I try to run REC90 fuel when i can get it. Carbs were very clean after running pump gas last year. I've been running the wheels off of it, I had to replace the rear tire last year after two riding seasons. I now have over 6000 mi on it. No problems other than this idle situation. Very frustrating, I'm usually pretty good at solving issues, but this one has me stumped. Thanks, Nick
@@nicksnorton2340 Air leaks are worse at high manifold vacuum such as idle or throttle off, under load its OK. I guess you have checked the idle jetting for blockage and the little O ring that seals the mixture screw or damage to the needle. have you done a compression test. Don't give up yet..
@@briancritchley5295 I understand what you are saying. Those are new amal premiers. I've had this problem from the get go. I went up a jet size to no avail. Both cylinders give 160 psi on test. At least until i wore out! I'll be checking it out today so I'll let you know what/how I do. Nick
Sweet!!!! Love the way all cycle parts wobble around like a bowl of jelly _ Proper Norton. Keep it up.
Nice bike. Sounds great. Love these old bikes. Enjoy.
Thank you, I appreciate that.
Very nice bike Nick.. very nice indeed!

What model is this. Very nice
It originally started out as a street scrambler. I restored it to a standard roadster. Thank you for the kind compliment.

Everyone said that but when it raced against faster Hondas in the early seventies it took the round the corners every time !
Had a Triton. Great frame but thank goodness the engine was a Triumph.
It's not running as it should, sounds like its to advanced , reply to me and I can help, I know these Nortons well.

Not the most exciting presentation, but fortunately this beautiful bike in that colour does a lot of talking itself.
Thank you
