Thanks for being there my friend. As a younger gay man in the 70's I was HORRIBLY misinformed about bisexuality. That was a time when bisexuals were horribly lambasted from both sides. Gays would say, "Oh he is just lying to himself. He's actually gay and he just needs to accept it and move on!". (God, so embarrassing now!) With time, more exposure and societal change we are finally beginning to get the fluidity of human sexuality. For many years now I have had a friend (single when I met him) who has been a fun sexual partner from time to time as well as just a damn good friend. He is married now in Florida to a wonderful woman who is also bisexual. They have 3 great kids and she knows about our friendship. I live in Missouri so actually getting together is no longer possible but we still tend to flirt a lot on line and by phone. The nice thing is, I finally COMPLETELY get it and it seems so completely normal. Keep up the educating people!

Funny enough I spent like 15 years thinking i was bi when I'm actually gay. During that time I generally got a lot more understanding about bisexuality from the females I did date than from the gay guys.
Even if I happened to be wrong about it I will still strongly defend bisexuality and people seriously need to grow up.

I came out in 1972, when you could be put in a mental institution, just for saying that you’re gay. I’ve been through so much,so that people could love whoever they wanted. I am one of many who stepped out. I met the man of my dreams and lived a wonderful life with him until, I lost him to a heart attack. I had 18 years of magic. I’m happy to see you to be who you are, to the world, and not end up in jail.

Oh boy, you are NOT kidding about that denial business. I was deep in the closet, when I came out. I was just sitting there, telling myself, "I'm attracted to women but men too. I'm Bisexual. And I always have been." And the cognitive dissonance I experienced was just wild! The logic was there. And all the social BS I'd heard and piled on myself for DECADES, just shifted. And I was able to just walk out from under it. I was literally amazed.

Well done baby bi ❤❤ middle aged female bisexual here, came out in the 90's as bi, then was pressured by the queer community to 'pick a side' so after a while trying g to be straight, I came out again as lesbian, even though it never really fit. I was told that, as I am now married to a woman, I'm a lesbian by default, and saying I'm bisexual is a mute point. It frustrates the heck outta me!. The last couple of prides I ha r been openly repping the bi flag, and have come into my bi identity more, but it's taken a long time. Go at your own pace.

Being bisexual was something that came at me gradually. I was his age in the early 1980's, even then being called gay in the '70's on the school playground was the worst insult. I would try to avoid music videos on TV ft the likes of David Cassidy, or Nick Haywood (Haircut 100) and I didn't stop to think why. The there was the actor who starred in Smallville, didn't watch many episodes, you can guess why.

I'm bi and I knew it at 11 when I had a boyfriend and a girlfriend in different towns. I didn't know what unfaithfulness was. But at that time I had never heard the word or term bi if it existed back then. Sometime ago I began with a new female doctor and as soon as she heard my sexual orientation was bi she wanted to do an AIDS test. Well I did and of course it came back negative. One of the things about bi men is that straight women think you're promiscuous and second you gotta have AIDS. So watchout for that pal if dating a straight woman.

You're absolutely right that sexual confusion goes beyond orientation and into the finer details of the experience.
I'm gay and I've had my awakening at 12 (watching Power Rangers, of all things), and it took me a good five years to really digest that information. I was worried about whether or not I fit into the stereotype, or if I even should, or how I would go about finding other guys that were also into guys and how that dynamic would even work.
The weirdest part was that a moment of clarity came to me from a dream I randomly had, where I caught two very masculine-looking guys really going at it with each other in my house. I asked what they were doing and they told me they were just having fun with each other. That answer made me understand that a lot of the gay experience was just being into guys, while everything else was just up to personal taste and that I didn't need to fit what people understood to be a gay man at the time.
After all that, I came out at 17 and have met queer guys of all sorts since then

Dude, I can relate to the suppressing crushes on guys along time ago being a girl even tho it’s “normal.” I thought it was just because I’m awkward in general but now I wonder since I’m newly bi, if it’s related to my sexuality somehow (I’m heteromantic btw so I’ve never had crushes on girls).

Long before I had even ever heard the word " Gay " , much less " Bisexual." When I was in first grade. I had my very first crush on another boy. He was my best friend and I just thought that he was the cutest thing I'd ever seen. But being only six years old, I really wasn't experiencing any sexual desires. But in a moment of weakness, or just simply childhood curiosity. I just impulsively leaned in and gave him a kiss directly on his lips. He even puckerd his lips in response. Although I got the distinct feeling afterwards that his response to me kissing him was just an involuntary reaction. Because as quickly as it happened it ended and all he did in response was to quickly wipe off his lips with the back of his hand and look at me with a very confused face. I was a little embarrassed and I had absolutely no idea where that kiss had come from. It was very impulsive and without consideration. But thankfully he just started laughing at the terror that must have been obvious on my face and we ended up both laughing, staying best friends and never talking about it again.
Fast forward to Junior High school and the onset of puberty. At that point I had kissed several cute girls. But even though now I understand that I was finding plenty of the boys around me attractive as well at that age. Until puberty set in. I was simply confused by my feelings towards boys. That concept of bisexuality had not been introduced to me then. So knowing without a doubt that I was turned on by pretty girls. I just assumed that I was straight. Although I didn't think to even make that distinction regarding my sexuality. But once I was in 7th grade Gym class. And back then it was mandatory to take a shower at the end of class along with the rest of the boys. This was my first time being naked in front of complet strangers and being able to see them completely naked in front of me. So when I realized that I was having a very dramatic reaction to seeing the naked bodies of my classmates. I became extremely confused. Because by then I understood what gay and straight were. And it was my understanding that you were either one or the other. Nothing in between the two. So I was having a very tough time grappling with the idea of being attracted to both boys and girls. It was a concept I'd never considered nor had even heard about. So for the longest time during my teen years I was a complete mess. Although I always looked forward to shower time everyday.
I was very afraid someone would somehow notice something about me that would tip them off that I was this sexual freak and that they would then out me to the world and my life would be over at twelve years old. My twelve years old mind did tend to exaggerate things quite a lot. But on this subject my fears had hard evidence to justify it. Back then in the 70s . Being even just thought to be gay, even without proof, could get you beat up daily and bullied constantly. And even killed in some extreme cases. So I felt that I had no choice but to repress that side of me. So I poured all my sexual desires and outward interests to just girls and women. I was still very much attracted to boys and would always be. But there are consequences for repressing you full natural sexuality . I suffered negative self esteem issues my entire life. I was never able to discover that other half of my nature. I'm sixty one years old now and still a half a virgin. I have other relationship issues now because of that repression.
So please Gay or Bisexual. Find a way to get to be who you truly are. Because repressing the part of your nature. Will come with a steep price in your latter years.

Thank you so much for sharing your thoughts, Riley! I am in one of the oldest and racial-ethnically mixed in 532 years of American history family lines, also decidedly resolved in the concept of being reincarnated. So then, I've referred (before libraries were regulated for their cultural or metaphysical content on human sexuality,) to literature. Thus, responding when challenged with questions by reading texts of wise teachers of Hindu literature, and speaking both English, Norsk, Spanish and French, my answer to teenaged buddies in the 1970s was a medically very conservative, ethically very morally cautious kind of bisexuality. But then, there was the Kinsey Report, and "The Naked Ape" and other popular texts that also published openly many questions to consider. My allergies react faster than normal and this made me by nature more careful than most male peers about physical intimacy that might include sperm contact, and almost never did most other males actually believe my aversion was molecular biology but thought it was a mental thing usually called a "clean thing" with me. But then, I did not get any STDs and by 1980, it was significant how my precautions had protected me from the sudden issue hitting the progressive community as AIDS. Because all along constantly Gays told me to grow up and stop being in "denial" quoting Freud from his 1910 book, and the Straights would quote their Bibles written by their Lord in plain English. So eventually I wrote (Dreams of Allon, 1987) my own science fiction novel series, and developed what I branded as "The Allon Consciousness Hypothesis" asking "What if a people advance in space exploration adapting to travel taking thousands of years, and living that long they have many emotional relationships, many loves and mutual understandings eventually just learning to accept in a more broad general way, how humanity emotionally has the feelings and spiritual exploration that it has? What would that "sexuality" eventually become?" So that became a mode in my science fiction series. The Allon who live tens of thousands of years probably would be classified as mildly bisexual in their way of thinking." It has never been a populist brand of science fiction, and it is only mildly liked among critics in the "GLBTQ+" community who write reviews, and never have the "Straights" cut me any slack at all in my business, career or life. But my graduate thesis was based on the biology of behavior, and my method was the use of Large Learning Model computer analytics and AI study in Information Theory, where I have now a few new technology patents. I hope anyone publishing their essay to include being bisexual will practice very safe behaviors in expressing that lifestyle, as conception of children must not include risk of birth with AIDS. But other than that, the main fact is to this day sociologically, there is no truce between the sides in the sexuality civil war politically, and being bisexual means you have no idea if someone else is an ally or not. If it was actually psychology as an issue, then there would not be 80 percent more bisexuals in Europe than are in the USA. It is a political thing here, but it does not seem to get better any time soon. So be careful and take care with a strong resolve to nurture yourself, being exactly who you are. We're a little like the Johnny Cash song on the 1950s radio I heard as a kid. He sang, "You gotta walk that lonesome valley. You gotta walk it by yourself. Ain't nobody else gonna walk it for you. You gotta walk it for yourself..."

I love the cross-orientation model. I still feel like I have preferences in genders, which is why I am still bisexual. I care more about the person/personality than gender. Honestly, I'm looking for anyone nice, kind, spiritual, and a good heart, good looks may be a plus but it's not a deal breaker, keeping options open, and I love the open-endedness bi and pan people have) and a demiboy (between male and non-binary, I use he/him and they/them pronouns). As a bi guy, it makes me happy to see more open and proud bi/pan (and those with other bi+ identities such as omni and polysexuals, I see you) men out there, we exist!!

As somebody who's gay and also a counselor I think it's an ideal career choice. However I don't know where you are on your educational Journey but if you haven't started graduate school yet might I recommend getting a masters in social work instead of counseling. You learn the same skill set but you have much greater opportunities for jobs I have a bachelor's degree in Child and Adolescent development and I have a masters in clinical mental health counseling I don't regret my educational choices but if I had to do it over again I would have gotten a bachelor's and Masters in social work instead. Number one you'll get out of school faster because if you have a bachelor's in social work you have what's called Advanced standing in the Masters program meaning that you will be that much further ahead when you start graduate school that you actually get to skip the first two semesters I think because you already have acquired that knowledge through your bachelor program just my unsolicited piece of advice. @@rileyhere228 You said that the doctors were not sure what sex you were when you were going to be born. Now I have a very important question to you. And hopefully I am allowed to ask this question. Are you intersexual? I ask this because it is interesting. Only one of five thousand children is intersexual. And these children have to be protected from interphobia. All intersexual children have a right to be intersexual and must keep intersexual. Genital operations at intersexual children must be forbidden. If these genital operations are really allowed then we have an interphobic society. And genital operations hurt intersexual children deep in their souls for a complete lifetime. And genital operations at intersexual children are mutilations. Therefore genital operations should never be allowed but definitely prohibited. Intersexual children are created exactly the way god and the nature want them to be. Intersexual children must keep exactly the way they are. I say all this because Germany was interphobic a few years ago. But now this kind of interphobia is shoven out of Germany. If you are intersexual please tell me! Because I really am interested. Hopefully I am really allowed to ask that question. I myself am an intensive fighter for the rights of intersexual and homosexual people. I also visit Christopher street days very often and I am talking to many politicians with the purpose to improve the life situation of homosexual and intersexual people. I am a true emancipatorical activist. I myself do also belong to a special minority but it is no minority of sexual category but instead of neurophysiological and mental category. I have Aspergers syndrom. This is a special kind of autism. And I am proud to have it. Autism is something you are born with, exactly as the homosexual orientation or the intersexual biological sex. I am really happy about the fact that we are a society of diversity. And exactly this society of diversity must be maintained.
