These kids have total comfort and control with their weapons and their strikes are fast, accurate, and intentional. The extra throws and spins are just to show skill beyond the traditional basics. So relax you guys
Good point, I understand where your coming from. Ive practiced in a few traditional styles and they all have different aspects to the style. Everything practiced in some martial arts styles is not for killing or war. For example, many forms in Chinese martial arts are not practiced for the purpose of learning killing moves but more so to develop the bodies abilities. They also practice healing an medicine in the Chinese martial arts, and they also emphasize showing kindness and compassion .
Actually no. This sport is only a strength and adrenaline building exercise disguised in tricking and spinning of weapons by using the core essentials (that 'are' taught to students by the way) to boost confidence and physical coordination through countless hours of training and conditioning all leading up to the point where those capable of comitting to this sport are able to do things like the things seen in this video. People in this comment section can't help but complain about the "gymnastic" side of this, however i respond to this with a question. If doing flips is so unimportant, how come every dojo teaches kids to do push-ups and sit-ups and nobody says "Why would anyone do push-ups in martial arts? i'm never gonna use these in real life." Me: They are used as strength-building exercises. You would never do an exercise on anybody, that's what makes them exercises. So either come to grips with the fact that not every single dojo copy-pastes everything out of one master whose methods only prove to be successful without flair or keep on complaining (solving nothing by the way) and have your narrow mind be focused solely on one style and live your days unable to give anything new any chance whatsoever or even dive into researching it. God forbid you ever should, seeing as your elitist and narcissistic ways cloud your tolerance for anything that steps out of the norm. Truly you are the worst judges of something you don't know about.
-Much like you do, in knocking out an opponent with a single blow, or strike. Any kicks above the knee are a huge risk, any swashbuckling opens you up for a myriad of strikes. I've trainedin knife-fighting my whole life, my dad was one of the top of his class in Marine Recon during 'Nam in qualifications for Knife fighting, they also did Kali in their off-time. He spent a lot of time in the Philippines and those guys got some of the best knifing techniques in the world. Less acrobatic guys-
This is just the truth as I see it, from 17 years of experience and some great pieces of wisdom, but it's mostly personal experience, some experience as a trainer, and reading a LOT of books on martial arts. To me, Aikido is the most fascinating and "love it or hate it" martial art out there. While I consider a mixture of Krav Maga, boxing, Wing chung, JKD, some judo, kali, knife fighting, bokken training, basically the addage "be like water, my friend." Is something I adhere to.
The black dude is incredibly skilled! I wouldn't like to meet him in a fight xD! And then the first guy is also incredible, and the one with the staff!
It builds immense flexibility, more than you'd get practicing krav maga or training with a bokken. I do Krav Maga 4 years, Wing Chun 1 year, Western Boxing (17 years), I was trained by both Gene Fullmer and Eddie "Flash" Newman, both world champions. What I learned is as showy as this stuff is, it can be immensely distracting and it also allows them to maneuver out of certain locks and holds that a 6'3 235 lb guy like myself simply can't do as I don't practice acrobatics. I train in-
I agree with you and I once practiced for flash and cool looks but I now care so much more about what is actually useful in combat. lets hope they take actual combat efficiency more serious at least now or later on. I would never twirl my weapon around in a fight! but we can't deny that it does look cool.
@DCBAUGH yes, definitely very high acrobatics and break dance skills!!! Speed and coordination are top! And the rest, well it is a totally different and modern form inspired by martial arts I would say. They sould use their skills for sports and dance!
Why does everyone hate on the exhibitionists? As a life-long martial artist myself, I have to agree with GecklesTwoCents. Would I use a flying-corkscrew kick in a real fight... NO. But I can sure tell you I would not want to have to fight ANY of these guys.
@degonar oh men i love you *_* you are so right... i wish we go back when the REAL martial arts were practiced... i think that if were in that time, the world would be just perfect.... but, it nice to see people like them doing that in youtube, its a poem for my eyes...
you would be so surprised at how much these martial artists have done. how many styles they mastered to be able to do this. xma has lots of doors that can open for them, such as movies. ppl like jet li, jackie chan do this 'acrobatic dancing' for movies do that mean they don't respect the sword they are using? no it doesn't they do it to promote their martial arts and to open the minds of ignorant people. and yes i know jet li and jackie chan have been masters for yrs in case ur wondering.
Don't bash this. These guys have good control of their body and weapon, and that's more than most athletes can claim. None of these movements would win them a competition aside from this kind of show - but this is just that. It's a show of control. This doesn't apply to combat, and to be honest those teachings are dead. They died with the era. What you have left is a gentlemen sport through and through. That's the reality. If you want to learn how to apply it and not waste money, go to a dojo that pits you against other people, and I don't just mean sparring. That's the only way you'll truly understand a martial art.
everyone else here is right. Just because they do fancy, doesnt mean they aint good. They do fancy to show the people the full extent of what they can do. Fighting sports already exist, such as MMA, boxing, etc, so people can see that, this is designed to show us the full extent of what a person can do with dedication and not fool us into false assumptions
The first key to fighting is learning to take a punch and roll with your punches. I don't think there is any doubt that the once-mocked Wing Chun has become a very proficient self-defense martial art. I generally put martial arts into three categories. 1)Showcasing/Acrobatic, your Jackie Chan types 2) Sports, MMA, Kickboxing and Boxing (I'm a boxer and have done some kickboxing, and some unofficiated MMA stuff) 3) Combative martial arts. This is the stuff you won't see in the ring
I like both your points, but either way what's true is that, while this may be just a show, these guys have no doubt put in some very serious training into various martial arts...
If any of you haters of tricking have ever even tried tricking, you will quickly realize that one needs a good basis in formal martial arts training. The tricking moves are built upon moves taught in taekwondo, karate and kung fu. Thus to be a good tricker means that one must have deep experience in formal martial arts. THOSE WHO CAN, DO. THOSE WHO CAN'T, CRITICIZE.
you realize most xma guys are really good martial artists that have plenty of practical training, they do have schools and strong traditional martial arts roots, the founder of xma said flash is trash without any basics, this is just what they do for fun!
I see your point, but in these days many people learn the defense and spiritual side of martial but also want to compete because they enjoy it. I think many positive things can come from learning good sportsmanship by participating in these sporting events. People dont really need marital arts for war anymore like they used to, so now its mostly sport. I think every display of martial in any competition involves some form of showmanship. Anyway i guess i agree with you to an extent.
@Chequemayte yeah, i noticed.. i was wondering how the messy multiple slashes are gonna kill.. too many extra movements... then i read the comments and discover its actually an extreme dance sport.. pretty interesting tho..
Even if the practicality of these demonstrations is limited in a real fight, they are pretty fun to watch, and it's not like these guys don't work hard on their routines. I know I couldn't do this stuff, I'd be way too worried about my weapon flying into the crowd and killing someone. lol
@Halofreakanoid -- these are counters. just look at the martial artists punches and kicks . it is taught to the student of martial arts. a students learns how to block the attack and how to attack on enemy. the music keep the them in rythem. these are very tough practices. if someone don't know these "DANCE in your language " , he or she can't fight.
For anyone who dosent know or are arguing this is useless in a fight, this is called extreme martial arts or XMA. It is the combination of traditional martial arts and gymnastics/acrobatics. It is only meant for showing off and not for a real fight. However every practiconer of XMA is most likely a traditional martial artist. So basically yes this is useless in a fight. Not opinion but sheer fact. But im not hating it seeing how i do this and TKD.
rudy, matt, and marcel are friggin on another level. who's that guy at the 7 minute mark with the red gi? he's awesome too. these are pretty inspiring to train for sure
Heh. Yeah, maybe you're right that I'm too old to pick up some cute little flips. So I settle for dreary, unattractive training methods like using steel posts as makiwara and rapping on my bones with bokuto. But I'm sure all that would be blown away the first time I actually encountered the pure chill awesome factor of !!!X-TREME MARTIAL ART!!!
These guys fail to realize, the very second your weapon leaves your hand, you're a dead man, and the more time you spend in the air, the more rapidly your move looses power making you vulnerable to a counter attack, this is why I dont do tournaments, i don't see any of these guys surviving a street fight .
Where is this show? I realy like fights (taekwondo-kung fu) and i want learn more about kicks and tricks mades in the air (amazing moves) have some site that teaches this?
These people are clearly in the peak of physical fitness and have strong martial arts backgrounds as all of them are a black belt or above in karate, they do forms to push their bodies further. Doing flips also increases explosive power massively. Why would you, who i can only assume is a grown man that plays zelda, be able to beat them with ease?
(continued) To me, martial arts is more about learning how not to fight. There is just so much more to it so I would say these guys are doing martial arts IMO. Every style emphasizes different thing and was used and developed for different reasons, so the definition of real martial arts is kind of subjective, but I feel you on your points I just see it a little different.
This contains hours and hours of training. But in fact regarding nnunchakus... they has max 50 grams. That is why they spin them so fast... with 450 that isn posible... and if it were, those boys wouldnt be there anymore :)
Much respect to such hard work to develop these skills. This entertainment is just that. Agree with Nikeboy. None of this represents combat. Doubt any of the weapons guys know what rebound is like from blocking another weapon or from hitting or cutting something or someone. Cool to watch, fatal for real.
Yes, but it also builds tremendous twitch-fiber reflexes and manuverability. It also is tremendously good for your heart and stamina. I've been training in boxing for years and I'm sure in a real fight with some of these guys I'd knock their blocks off. But never rule these showy-type of martial arts completely out. They have great muscle memroy and basically half the comments here assume that NONE of these guys have ever done contact martial arts. IMO and Gene Fullmer's opinion (a valued one)-
This is one of the best xma compilations ever. I absolutely love it. Muah!
The first one Steve Terada ive been watching him since i was 12 years old🥋🤸🏻
that first one was sooooo cool!!!!!! slooow mooootion!!!!! coooool! props!
Hearing someone call Terada's sideswipe clean is hilarious. Understatement of the century.
Black guy at the end is the best one. All basics is awesome!!
These kids have total comfort and control with their weapons and their strikes are fast, accurate, and intentional. The extra throws and spins are just to show skill beyond the traditional basics. So relax you guys
nah man, i love watching this stuff, these people got talent.
rudy and matt kick so much ass. some of the sharpest kickers around.
This is not a demonstration of the most effective technics. This is ART!
DOUBLE TWIST... OH TRIPLE!!! WHAT DOES THIS MEAN... ITS SOO BEAUTIFUL
Good point, I understand where your coming from. Ive practiced in a few traditional styles and they all have different aspects to the style. Yes, it's not real martial art, but this requires a lot of skill. The speed of these guys is incredible.

great katas allround the guys with the sai's you rock
amazing...fantastic perfomances...keep going on...
that is amazing talent that these guys posses and i can tell they work very hard to keep in shape for these things that is somthing id love to pursue
These guys have a lot of discipline, and there are some traditional forms that look flashy as well
Wow, great dancing and gymnastics skills here. Your batons are shaped funny though.
I loved this video!

the last one was amazing
one of those rare times i actually agree with wut u say...apparently losing on final fu made him step his game up. dude was on point with that form.
I agree with you and I once practiced for flash and cool looks but I now care so much more about what is actually useful in combat. lets hope they take actual combat efficiency more serious at least now or later on. I would never twirl my weapon around in a fight! but we can't deny that it does look cool.
omg double nunchucks? are u serious? that so awesome... also the dude wer he remove the sword from the cover and catches it... that was awesome.
1:13 Oh baby a Triple!!
@DCBAUGH
yes, definitely very high acrobatics and break dance skills!!! Speed and coordination are top! And the rest, well it is a totally different and modern form inspired by martial arts I would say. They sould use their skills for sports and dance!
For anyone actually interested in martial arts Dave Lowry is a very good writer.
4:24 that flip kicked ass.
This is aswome, man have things changed.
the kid with the sword is awesome!!

Kalman Scoka is AWESOME! i got to train with him
These guys are great dancers!!! Why are they not in Step up 3D??
however these are the guys who will get the stuntmen careers I guess
putting kata to music moves this kind of event from the martial arts genre to aerobics
I like both your points, but either way what's true is that, while this may be just a show, these guys have no doubt put in some very serious training into various martial arts...
damn i really like that sword skills...nice..nice..

I love Martial arts i should of took taekwondo when i was younger
you realize most xma guys are really good martial artists that have plenty of practical training, they do have schools and strong traditional martial arts roots, the founder of xma said flash is trash without any basics, this is just what they do for fun!
If they can fight as good as they dance, this looks promesing! lol
This shows their coordination and physical fitness is top-notch. Although I have to agree this is not "martial" arts anymore, it's still cool though.
I see your point, but in these days many people learn the defense and spiritual side of martial but also want to compete because they enjoy it. Man! the guy at 1:41 is really skilled, for his age!
I bet that these competitions give a lot of material for videogame designers (those that made mortal combat, Street fighter and so on)
rudy is such a beast its rediculous
Even if the practicality of these demonstrations is limited in a real fight, they are pretty fun to watch, and it's not like these guys don't work hard on their routines. I know I couldn't do this stuff, I'd be way too worried about my weapon flying into the crowd and killing someone. lol
I would be amazed if no one ever lost focus and flung their weapon into the crowd...that's insane
That sword is suppose to hold the soul of a warrior! What has the tools of the old, and greatest, forms of war been reduced to? A Child's Play Toy?
For anyone who dosent know or are arguing this is useless in a fight, this is called extreme martial arts or XMA. It is the combination of traditional martial arts and gymnastics/acrobatics. i wonder...
imagine what could happen if the swords-guys mess up and the sword flips out if their hands
Wow, there is about 10 kinds of awesome in all that, i only have 1 question. Could any of those guys do any of that in full period armour?
rudy, matt, and marcel are friggin on another level. who's that guy at the 7 minute mark with the red gi? he's awesome too. these are pretty inspiring to train for sure
Why is it that when I watch this, I can't help but think "Gun beats sword."?
im a kick boxer my self but i would really like to learn moves like those u know ...just for show-off :S does it take long to master em?
Heh. Yeah, maybe you're right that I'm too old to pick up some cute little flips. very impressive but would like to see these guys in a real fight or even in the octagon!

Wisely said!
They arent live most of the time but in some cases they r usually traditional only
This contains hours and hours of training. But in fact regarding nnunchakus... they has max 50 grams. That is why they spin them so fast... with 450 that isn posible... and if it were, those boys wouldnt be there anymore :)
That was intense.
There's all these people out there but they chose that little kid to play Aang in Avatar: The Last Air Bender movie.
Pretty good dancing, is it martial arts inspired? Looks a little bit that way :)
@trogdorfiend
Agreed and well put, you know and understand the fundamental of Martial Arts and what it really mean
Much respect to such hard work to develop these skills. This entertainment is just that. Agree with Nikeboy. None of this represents combat. Doubt any of the weapons guys know what rebound is like from blocking another weapon or from hitting or cutting something or someone. Cool to watch, fatal for real.
nothing scares the shyt out of me more than a black guy that knows martial arts.
I feel like this is just lethal gymnastics o_o
the whole point to the flipping and spinning is to show physical strength
and Knives...we use knives and batons now over swords.
@Halofreakanoid this is called kattha. every student hv to learn and practice it regular. it's not dance it is how to improve one's skills .
good dancing....
May be this is not martial arts at all, but this actually needs a lot of practice and every guy in this video is awesome ~
Dude, show some respect to at least their training. It takes years of dedication, hardwork & passion to learn what they are doing.
i liked the bo staff form at 3:51
how much blood did they have to clean up afterwards/ off camera
what style are these guys doing that teaches katana and kama kata like that? just curious because i want to learn katana kata
