This is a really good interview with Rob. When I first listened to The Dead Heart and only recently found out the title was included in the song towards the end. To hear him explain how this song was created is genius and shows what a great musician and drummer he is. Ironically I first heard this song in an aerobics class and was in love with it. It lead me to listening to more of the Oils music. I really can appreciate this and listen to the Oils music. Such a great Australian band from a US citizen!
So many of the elements that he's describing here are EXACTLY the way that I've been emotionally reacting to this jewel of a song for years. Infinite space. The desert. Pretty wild that this thing can still bring me to tears after all these years and listens...
David...me too. The more I listen to this song the more I learn...have you heard the Mtv Unplugged version with the didgeridoo/yadaki...? It takes it to a higher level.
Fascinating... wonderful to hear how this iconic song was built. Thanks for sharing! Superb! Thanks for posting. This guy is a legend. Should have an OAM
One of my drumming heroes,my sister introduced me to the Oils a bit late with the album A Place Without A Postcard but when the song No Time For Games played on the radio every now and then,I was mesmerised, they had different elements to their music, punk, straight Aussie rock and even prog rock.
I don't have a guitar here to check, but by the looks of it I think these are the chords. Verse's Bm (could be a B5 power chord )Bm - A- G- F#m - D - ABm - do do do do part he talks about ( E*, B, F#, B, B*,E*) * = Open strings.Chorus- looks like this.Bm barre chord on 7th fret E, A triad on 5th fret. Bm barre chord on 7th fret , E, A barre chord on 5thBm barre chord on 7th fret E, A triad on 5th fret. Bm barre chord on 7th fret - E- A barre chord on 5thBm barre chord on 7th fret - E- F#m - A That Bm might be just a B.I know he calls it a B but he is a drummer and a B minor or B5 makes more sense.Who knows what Rotsey and Moginie did to the chords Rob Hirst originally wrote though.
I don't care what anyone else says, I think Rob is one of the best drummers out there. The Oils truly a sum greater than their parts, but any weak link would have been detrimental to the band. Rob certainly elevated the bands music.

Thanks for sharing that. Always nice to see Rob Hirst talk about the oils.

You're lucky. I only saw (all of) them once, in 93 in Belgium. They kicked off the show with Only the strong. I'll never forget that.

The Oils always very conceptual and thoughtful about their songs. Great to hear this background.
