'Truganini' It takes conviction and serious balls to perform this brilliantly written 'Anti-British Monarchy protest song' on an English stage, televised by the cameras of the BBC! Subversive - with a touch of genius.
This is still so relevant in Australia today 27th March 2021. So sad for our amazing country. What an absolutely wonderful Australian Band the Oils are. ❤️
At 07:35 Peter Garrett sings the verse about the death of his mother when he was a younger man in a house fire. It was a brave verse to write knowing he'd probably be singing it numerous times in the future.
@@jeffhalmos7981 whatever the reason, Robbie Hirst is more than a mere drummer. His style helped make the Oils sound, which in my opinion was never better, never rawer than the live gigs late 70s early 80s, epitomised by the brilliant *Powderworks*
Great performance. I think I still have a vhs tape of this somewhere from recording it at the time. Great live versions of Truganini and My Country, two of their many brilliant songs. Jim Moginie and Martin Rotsey are possibly the most under rated guitar duo ever. Fantastic version of In The Valley as well that they played here and in the unplugged concerts. Fantastic band.
What a belter! I love Midnight oil and had a VHS copy of this show back in the day. Hugely underrated band and amazing when It saw them at Brixton in 93. (London).
Love PG singing to a British audience about Australian republicanism and the horrors of aboriginal treatment under the legacy of colonial racism ... well chosen and impressed they were OK’d to sing this particular song
Watch some stuff with Peter Gifford on Bass , maybe Oils on the water, "Minutes to midnight" from Red Sails. You will thank me later if you love the bass of the Oils.
I love Oil but in that time INXS is considered with Queen best group in the world. I am not talking who you like or i, i love Oil but INXS considered best live group in the world and concert in Wembey 92. is just masterpiece. Hutchense has all... Which Australian are you talking about? The Australian that wants equality for all and respect for environment, or the Australian that wants to go back to the 50's to a white Australia policy and horrible food? At the moment, there seems to be two kinds of Australian in a tug of war with each other.
Sound on those guitars is incredible! I also wish there was even one live performance of the whole In the Valley song. They always cut it before the best part
Cate Stone If you knew the history of this band and that punk is more than cliched bad guys playing fast basic chords, then you would understand that Midnight Oil is a punk outfit indeed.
DepressedCapitalist They are not a punk rock band. I will not argue with you. They do NOT identify with being a PUNK rock band. I looked up this information and Peter Garrett himself, in an article says, verbatim, "We do not identify ourselves as being Punk Rock" so straight from Peter's mouth to this article. So, Depressed, get your facts before you post. I know a little more than you do about Midnight Oil. So on that note, G'day.
Cate Stone Real punk bands (your job to find them if you can) never identified themselves with being punk. After all, punk is a label that the market and people like you put on bands. The fact that you do not consider this band punk clearly shows you know nothing about them despite your rambling. On that note, you also know nothing about punk so go listen to blink 182 my friend.
I beg your pardon? I know nothing about them? Why don't you stop your rambling. What you perceive to be punk is unreal. You need to get your facts straight, before you come on here and start rambling like a moron. And I am not your friend in any way shape or form. And I do not like Blink 182. I have listened to them off and on. That is my prerogative, so on that note I will say, G'day. And please, do not comment back to me.
no wonder the audience seems a bit flat when you realise what the Oils are singing... Sempre foi sempre será minha banda favorita. mid nigth marcou muito na história e na minha adolescência e na minha juventude. Meus amigos íntimos dizem que as música deles parecem muito com migo.
Dumb question from someone that doesn't understand very well this history and things alike involved: They sing "I see Union Jack in flames" in UK, right? Wouldn't that sound a little offensive? I mean, I do not care for those things as well, flags, countries, and whatever, but wouldn't that trigger some reactions? Can someone please explain this to me, I'm not trying to start a flamewar here, just really wanted to understand history and culture. Many thanks :)
Michel Vieira OK, Very complex issue but i will try to sum it up briefly (and without offending anyone). Basically the British came over to Australia and committed some heinous crimes against the indigenous people (the Australian Aboriginals/kooris) (this is HISTORY and I have nothing against the British or any other race of people). Peter Garrett is basically saying that a lot of Australians, especially those in power, still oppress the Aboriginal people when he sings "I see namatjira (Aboriginal artist Albert Namatjira) in custody, I see Truganini (last full blood Aboriginal in Tasmania) in chains". Rightly or wrongly some people still see the Union Jack as a symbol of that oppression, so in singing "i see the Union Jack in flames" he is not so much having a go at the British as he is at the Australians who support a monarchy. I don't know if you're from Aus but this song was written when there was a huge debate as to whether Australia remained a monarchy or became a republic. There may be a few technical errors in what I have stated, so anyone who knows more please don't hammer me too much. BTW its not a dumb question at all- nothing is a dumb question if it is asked with a genuine desire to learn. Sorry, I was going to be brief.
Hey there, thanks a lot for shedding some light on this, mate. So, he goes more against Aus government, right? That would certainly be more safe then :) I'm born and raised in South America (Brazil) and didn' know this parte of history. Googled it and didn't found anything. Your explanation helped a lot, thanks. The part about the aboriginal issue you talked I already imagined, as the history here in my country is similar. I don't havê anything against Portugal as well, this is history - as you pointed :) Thanks again for spending time on this, appreciate it. And, hell of a song right? :)
dartanion007 the last verse is "Union Jack in flames....LET IT BURN". Favorite Midnight Oil song ever. Midnight Oil had/has a cult following here in the US.
