How To Clean Car Battery Terminals--THE EASY WAY!!!

    This video explains how to clean your car battery terminals. There are a few tools required: A wrench (10mm for this car), and some sort of wire brush or battery terminal cleaning tool.
    Simply remove the NEGATIVE battery terminal first, then the positive, and clean both the battery posts and the actual terminals with your wire brush until they are bright and shiny.
    Then, reconnect your positive cable first, and negative cable last.
    Fairly simple, and should take a novice only about 10 minutes.
    Important note: On most modern cars, when the battery has been disconnected, the computer will lose the engine run characteristics. That means that once cleaned and you start the engine back up, it may run funny for a while--too fast or too slow, it make shake, even stall on you. This is especially true if it is an older car (reason being is the computer is expecting the intake to be perfectly clean, but on a car with many miles on it, it isn't clean, so the computer has to compensate, and it takes time for that to happen). Usually after 15 minutes or so the car should be running normally once again.

    • @jaykay18
      @jaykay18  7 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Thanks! You CAN do this yourself, just don't put the wrench across the terminals! It's highly unlikely even if you completely drop the wrench that you'll land it just like that. It's that one-in-a-million shot, but I have to mention because in this world, it has happened before. Just make sure you pull the negative cable first and you're 99.9% safe! Think of the satisfaction you'll get doing the job yourself, and saving all the money you would have shelled out! Trust me, the satisfaction is worth far more than the money.

    You can also use rough sandpaper and wrap it around a screwdriver to clean the inside of the clamps and terminals, and it will get the metal very shiny. I also keep a 10mm and sandpaper in my car just in case. I used P60 grit sandpaper.

    So followed this exactly, truck started great drove a bit, came home and tested a time or two through the night seemed great, for me to work today and I go to leave and the dreaded ticking noise will not let her start. Any tips? It’s the same thing that lead me to clean in the first place and both times I had to get a jump to get home. My wife tested the battery she said it seems fine we recently bought it like last 6 months maybe.

    • @jaykay18
      @jaykay18  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      OK, a few you things:
      1. If there was corrosion, remember that it can not only prevent power from going out to the car, but back in to recharge the battery. So there's a good chance the battery was just low and needed to be recharged. A nice drive on the highway usually will do the trick.
      2. If you can get the vehicle started, you can bring it to your local auto parts store. Many of them can test the battery for free (or you can take the battery out and bring it to them to be tested). The point is, if they deem it bad, they know you need one and you'd be likely to buy it from them.
      3. There could potentially be a problem with the starter on the vehicle, or the wiring to it. Some vehicles also have some sort of relay for the starter that can go bad. Try cranking the engine with the door open, and watch the dome light as you do it. On a properly working car, you'll see the dome light dim considerably, and it will flash in time to the sound of the engine starting. If on your vehicle when you do it, if the battery is low the light would practically go out.
      4. The car you see depicted in this video is a 2000 Camry. Its original battery was made by Panasonic in Japan. It lasted 9 years, and wasn't totally dead when I replaced it. You will NEVER see a car battery last that long ever again. They don't make them like they used to. The replacement battery I put in this car didn't even make it 3 years before it was dead.

    Hey, would something like WD-40 or CRC 5-56 be okay to use on the terminals, or would that be bad? I'm new to car stuff so i try to know as much as i can before i try anything out.

    • @jaykay18
      @jaykay18  7 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Here's the idea behind the grease on the terminals: The terminals on the battery, as well as the clamps on them, leave little spaces in-between. Any of that exposed metal is subject to corrosion. When you grease the terminals and then put the clamps on, the grease squeezes out some from all those little nooks and crannies, and leaves everything coated, preventing corrosion.
      WD-40 is a water displacer, which is what WD stands for. The 40 is 40th attempt. That means the first 39 didn't work, and personally I don't feel the 40th did either. WD is great for gate hinges, hedge clippers, and the like. I've also found it to be fairly effective as a rust remover. It's useless as a lubricant. So the old adage of "if it moves and it shouldn't use duct tape, if it doesn't move and it should use WD-40" doesn't stand up in my book. I use 3-in-1 oil to lubricate things, works great. Oddly enough it's made by the WD-40 company.
      So in short, WD wouldn't hurt anything, but I doubt it would help much either.

I use dielectric grease not only on my battery terminals, but also on my trailer hitch wiring connections where there is a lot of moisture and dirt exposure and can quickly corrode any electrical connection.

    • @jaykay18
      @jaykay18  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You can use either of those methods if you like, and they will work, but not to the degree the method I showed in this video does. The main thing is to have a good connection between those cables and the battery posts. Chances are any sort of concoction will not get into the very small space between the clamps and posts, and that's exactly where the corrosion occurs.
      Since disconnecting the battery will reset the computer and cause the engine to not run properly when reconnected, I'd suggest you take a nice quiet day where you have all day, and simply do it as shown in the video. Take your time. When you're done, start the vehicle and let it idle for 5 minutes. Then take it for a good 5-10 mile drive. Be prepared during that drive for too low or too high idle, and possible stalling. After you go 5 or 10 miles, you'll notice at the next traffic light it'll all be back to normal.
      Might also be a good idea to write down your radio station presets so you can reprogram them in.

    that will only rust quicker down the road, you have to seal it back up.
    Since it is a DIY video, use a bit of vaseline to cover up all the metal terminal after done installing, this is the bare minimum budget way. there are special compound to be used for this purpose and felt washers needed for a complete installation.

    • @jaykay18
      @jaykay18  ปีที่แล้ว

      You must be one of those "by the book" mechanics, where you take the book hours, multiply it by 2.5, and then throw a few lunch breaks in there.
      It actually was perfectly fine, and did NOT corrode any further. The battery itself had to be replaced not long after, it was spewing and accelerating the corrosion. Years down the road, it wouldn't matter in the end when another driver ran a red and t-boned it. I'm sure you're glad you asked now.
      In fact I just replaced the battery on my 67 Riviera, I didn't even need to clean the terminal clamps, they were so broken and corroded from age that I replace them. This time, I had grease, and applied that all over the battery terminals, and clamps. I have never seen the felt washers do anything except drain a few more dollars from your wallet.

    So my moms car isn't starting, she said its relatively new. Every time I jump it, it would die so I took it to Autozone they said the dirt on the battery is blocking the power from getting into the car. I did what you said when I took the cables off the terminal it didn't seem that dirt, I still scraped it and had to jump the battery anyway. Took the car around the block and then tried to cut it back on but the battery died again. Even the employee at Autozone said you can tell the battery is new. What do you think is the problem?

    • @jaykay18
      @jaykay18  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Sounds to me like there's an alternator problem. If you jump start the car and when you remove the battery cables, the car dies, the alternator is not working.

    • @ROCBOYZGURLZ
      @ROCBOYZGURLZ 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@jaykay18 thanks for the quick reply. We were able to drive the car around the block, park it, cut the car off when I went to cut it back on the car would not cut on, it will only start when we do a jump with my portable jump starter pack

    • @jaykay18
      @jaykay18  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You need to start testing things, not just hoping it starts to work. They sell battery testers, or you can just use a voltmeter. If you hook up a voltmeter, the battery should read about 12 volts with the car off. if not, it's discharged and needs to recharge. Going around the block isn't long enough to recharge. Once you get it started, the same voltmeter can tell you if the alternator is working, you should be reading about 14 volts with the engine running.
      This is why I keep numerous battery testers, car scan tools, voltmeters, battery chargers, jump packs, and even jumper cables around, I have everything I could possibly need to combat a dead battery. If you don't, I would suggest you look into getting some if not all of those tools.

    Suppose for some reason it's difficult, almost impossible, to disconnect the negative first and you're forced to disconnect the positive instead. Then what? So you just make sure to avoid touching any metal parts with the positive? How about wrapping a rag or something around it in the meantime?

    • @jaykay18
      @jaykay18  9 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      +GymChess You can disconnect either. It's always recommended to do the negative, because the entire frame of the car, the engine, any metal parts (and most are) are connected to that negative. If you disconnect the positive first and your wrench makes contact with anything else metal, you're not going to be happy about the situation at all. I'll leave it at that, your imagination can fill in what may happen.
      Wrapping a rag around the wrench wouldn't be a bad idea. At least you've got a shot at it.

    My car just makes the click.. A device conected is telling me my battery is 12.3 so i dont know if could be the terminals? They look good without corrosion. But a bit loose..

    • @jaykay18
      @jaykay18  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You need to remove them and inspect inside of them to see if there's corrosion, sometimes it's not just on the surface like you saw here. Also, how old is the battery? If it's 4+ years old, it could have bit the dust, they don't make them like they used to. Even though the voltage appears to be enough, the idea behind this type of battery is is needs to be able to basically dump all the current it has into the starter to turn the engine over. Not enough current, but enough voltage means you'll just get the click.
      If your connections are loose, that also could be the problem. If you can't seem to tighten them down, I've seen people drive something like a drywall screw in between the battery clamp and the post on the battery.
      If all of that fails, and a jump start also fails, you have a problem with the starter. Sometimes, getting a piece of pipe and banging on the starter will get it to work again.

    On the newer cars you should have an alternate power source hooked up before
    disconnecting the battery cables otherwise you could lose your computer codes
    and they may have to be reinstalled.

    • @jaykay18

      If a car manufacturer has their vehicle locked down that far that you can't replace the battery by yourself, they don't deserve your business or anyone else's.

      I was completely expecting it NOT to start. The wife called me at work and told me it didn't start, so if it didn't earlier why would it later? Somehow, for some reason, it just magically decided to work that time.

      @jaykay18  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      That's a good point. Personally I haven't heard of anyone stealing stock radios in a while, they used to only do that with high-end cars; now in most cars the stock radio is more than decent.

    What do you do when the Computer does happen to forget the run characteristics and it keeps failing to operate? Is there any way to redo the commands?

    • @jaykay18
      @jaykay18  7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      It will relearn, it just takes time. Drive about 15 miles and it should relearn everything. Be VERY AWARE when you drive, the car may run very rough, and may stall either when stopped, or when the light goes green and you try to go. So it'll be white-knuckle driving for a bit but after that it'll run just like it used to.

    • @jaykay18
      @jaykay18  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      That's the magical P0420 code. Search my channel for more information on it.
      Rough idle is rare, first off if the plugs/wires have high mileage they should be replaced and see where that would take you. Otherwise you're looking at something like intake, MAP sensor, or some crap like that.

    • @joeyp6704
      @joeyp6704 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Maybe I need to adjust the valve because I did hear a misfire at the exhaust and some ticking noise ,but good enough the car has more than 300,000 miles.

    • @jaykay18
      @jaykay18  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      From what I've read the valves rarely need adjustment, as they are pretty solid. If the ticking is bad, they can be adjusted, but it requires many hours of labor and some special tools.
      In addition, the valve trains on these engines are always a little bit noisy even when within spec. Especially with that kind of mileage--some mechanic will give you a $15,000 bill, when the car's worth far from that.

    • @joeyp6704
      @joeyp6704 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      It ended up being a dead car battery. OEM battery lasted 8 years!!

    • @jaykay18
      @jaykay18  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Gotcha beat, the original OEM battery in this car was made by Panasonic and was made in Japan! Lasted 9 years in total. Dead of winter when it almost quit, car would crank really really slow and the clock as well as the radio station presets would reset. I replaced the battery at that point to avoid getting stuck, but it probably would have made it another week or two.
      Anyway, I'm glad it's working again!

    • @jaykay18
      @jaykay18  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The_Pickler10 If the hood uses hydraulic struts to keep it open (usually a thin black cylinder with a polished steel shaft that extends out as the hood is opened), the struts have gone bad and need to be replaced.
      You have 2 choices:
      1. Price out replacements (might try ebay, usually can get them cheaper)
      2. Get yourself a NICE pair of vise-grip pliers, and attach to the polished steel shaft once you get the hood open. That'll act as a stop. You can also cut down an old broomstick to use as a prop rod, I did that for years on my old Chevy, until someone else I knew was getting rid of a car that had hydraulic lifters that worked, and they let me have them. Even though those were from a Dodge and mine was a Chevy, they fit (rather dangerously) over the pins provided and never came loose until I junked that car several years later.

      That is the wife's car, and she even called me at work and told me it wouldn't start. Magically, when I got home, it didn't want to cooperate for the video. But the problem was indeed the corrosion on the battery terminals. After this video, the problem has not recurred, and it's been over 4 years since I made this video.

  • @christophercollado4230
    @christophercollado4230 9 ปีที่แล้ว

    In real life, then is it okay not to put the grease on the terminals?-I don't have anything like that.

    • @jaykay18
      @jaykay18  9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Christopher Collado Well, I didn't this time, and it lasted. The grease helps prevent or at least slow down corrosion from occurring. If you don't have any, it will still work, but you should check it periodically.

      ***** That's exactly what I said, it's there simply for corrosion resistance. It prevents air and water from attacking it. The grease conducts electricity; most times I've found the most corrosion occurs on the inside of the battery terminals, that's why they make battery brushes like I had shown in this video.
