    As a guy that raced two stroke motorcycles for years and a person that keeps his wood stove running all winter. I was a test rider for one of the big four companies. When ever you change exhaust on a two stroke you change the power horse power curve and the torque curve. You usually give up power and torque at a certain RPM to get more at another RPM. Making it louder can seem faster. Sometimes it is and sometimes it is slower. A exhaust change on a chainsaw is not going to make a hugh change unless it is really choking the saw down. It could also be the carb, porting or the air box doing it. Changing the one may not do much. Usually you need some back pressure for good low and midrange torque. Bikes also have the advantage of the exhaust ports change size with RPMs. It creates a wider RPM range where you get more power. I have seen dyno test on 60cc engines turning 25 horsepower. So chainsaws are mild tuned engines designed for the long haul.
    I have to admit I really don’t like loud saws. My older 500cc race bike were not any louder the most un modified pro saws today.

    I've binge watched all kinds of power saw channels lately. In my 70's now, I have cut a healthy amount of firewood over the decades past and with and Alaskan mill slabbed up quite a bit of hardwood lumber. Been away from it for a long time now but the present state of the art is mind boggling to me. Hell we were just happy to have a power saw, these guys today are like the hot rodders and precision shooting crowds....just never happy with what they have and obsessing on modifications, sometimes with little practical return on investment. But then too I can understand "some" of these sawyers really do need the lightest and speediest cutting saws, and to them small improvements add up and are worth the trouble to achieve. I would too if I made a living cutting trees all day, every day. I guess my point is that for the bulk of saw users it is enough to just tune your saw properly, put a properly ground chain on and go to cutting.

      I agree, most peoples(99%) stock saw is more that enough. Even the “professional” loggers get by fine with stock saws, I live in a area that logging is the main Industry I don’t know if any loggers that use a modified saw. the bark box and these hot rod saws are more for people who like to tinker. From my findings the stock saw run better. Thanks for watching and stay safe

    If you think the bark box is too loud, you shouldn’t run it for that reason.
    If you want to cut faster, it looks like chain sharpening could help your chain be consistent all the way through and smooth. Looked like it was grabbing too much in certain spots, and when you had no pressure on the saw it wasn’t feeding though well on its own.
    The best looking cuts were your dogged in ones with either muffler.

    To me it looked like the saw had more bottom end with the bark box. It appeared that the saw wasn’t working as hard to pull the chain through the wood. I don’t have a bark box on any of my saws but the loggers using them on ported saws seem to like them. At least that’s the impression I’ve got from the videos I’ve watched. I do have a dual ported muffler on my ms460 and I did notice a difference in performance. It’s definitely louder but it also four strokes with the dual port muffler like yours did with the bark box. Good video and honest comparison.

    I think with 3-4 second difference in cut times with the same muffler, no conclusions can be made. Having said that, I’m not a fan of obnoxiously loud saws but in today’s epa mandates, it’s probably necessary. Not to make more power but to keep the saw as cool as possible. 362’s aren’t really hot rod saws and I think have enough cooling but I believe a free flowing exhaust is necessary on a 562. 👍🏼👍🏼

      What exhaust baffles are you drilling out? The exhaust has nothing other than a spark arrestor screen, that can easily be pulled out. The MS-362C has an Mtronic carburetor, no way of manually tuning the high low idle settings. A carburetor reset can be done but you still have no control of the carburetor settings

      @@Jdubbsotheradventure for me ive noticed the 462 just doesn't get as bogged down using the bark box. Like being dogged in and putting some pressure on the bar where it may catch and not wanna cut or cut slowly but with the bark box it just keeps chewing away at the wood. For example like when low stumping after felling a tree would feel like forever going through a decent dbh stump but with the bark box just let it eat and it'll go through, I guess sometimes it can be a little slower but it just eats wood

    I run WCS products on my 362 and 500i. Absolutely love them. But my saws get worked every day all day. I wouldn’t necessarily make the investment if I wasn’t in professional tree work, kinda overkill for the average homeowners cutting firewood. But for the guys that want the most out of their saws, Gordy and the guys at West Coast do it right.
    Also, running a 28” bar on the 362 is pushing it. Slap a 25” on there with a skip tooth chain. Your saw will thank you. Happy bucking!

    • @Jdubbsotheradventure
      @Jdubbsotheradventure  ปีที่แล้ว +3

      It’s been a good little saw. I have a 462 and an 066 that I run most of the time. As a full time logging saw I’d say the 362 with a 28 is up to the challenge as long as you know the limits. That said I wanted a long bar to enhance any major difference between the two exhaust systems. Iv tried a 25 inch on my saws but being “freakishly tall” it kills my back the 28 is almost to short.

    • @AICHUBS
      @AICHUBS ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hahaha I totally understand the “tall thing”lol. That’s why I run the 500i with a 32” bar, don’t have to bend over quite as much!🤣 My 362 with the 25” is set up for use in the tree. I don’t do much felling with it unless I get into smaller timber.

    • @mattfleming86
      @mattfleming86 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Having a 28" bar doesn't mean you have to bury it in 28" of wood..... And when you DO need to it doesn't mean you gotta dog it in hard and force feed it.

      I have a 362c with a 25 inch bar and bought two new chains for it at the same time. A regular chain and a skip tooth. It caught much faster with the regular chain. The skip tooth just seem to let the motor over rev and wasn't cutting anyting

    I think some of us should consider where we are going to be cutting at. Cutting in the city vs cutting in the forest. The noise doesn't matter in the forest, but in a city, big or small, too much noise can get too many complaints. But if your running a big wood chipper while cutting in the city it might not be an issue either way. 🤔
    Im in the category of recreational use, so "need" of a saw isn't really there anymore. I just love a good pro saw. So my limited use and short run time of my saw in the city may not annoy my neighbors enough to complain about the noise.
    My point is regardless of gains you might get, which I believe really come with a combination of mods along with the exhaust mod, location and how long you will be cutting might be a more important consideration for some of us to take into account before making mods that add to the noise levels.
    I've heard that the bark box increases the noise levels more than needed to accomplish the increased flow due to its design. But I have no first hand knowledge, so I can't say that that is for sure true or not. Logically it should be true since you are losing half the volume of space inside the muffler. That extra space inside the muffler has more of a noise dampening effect before the exhaust leaves the muffler. Im sure the bark box could be changed to create that volume of space inside the the muffler and it would lower the noise without losing the better exhaust flow. 🤔
    Great video. 😎👍

      Bark Box is fine if you want to switch quickly to the stock muffler design, but an enlarged original exhaust hole or a second one next to it will give you way more power than the bark box, since an exhaust hole on the front of the muffler screws with the backpressure enough that you don't get the same gains. Also, more noise with the barkbox.

    Bark box is great if the saw is set up for it, it mostly helps with the higher end of the torque curve. It also depends on the user, how they run a saw and how sharp the keep the cutters. I’ve noticed a huge difference in cutting speed on my two Stihl saws with the Barkbox. I talked to a local tree guy that has them on half his saws because of noise in neighborhoods and he has some guys that cut faster without them.

    • @Jdubbsotheradventure

      I suggest you run your own test make your own decision I don’t own stock in the barkbox these are my independent test with my independent results. If my results conflict with your reality then you make an educated decision based on your own research.

    • @PurpleNovember
      @PurpleNovember ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Jdubbsotheradventure Your test results actually confirmed my test results. Like most performance stuff, the Bark box is only one component in a system and most of the time adding one component of a system doesn’t make a huge difference. I have my saws set up with 24, 25, 28, 32, or 42 inch bars and run Stihl RSLFK chain. I also run 7, 8, 9, or 10 pin rims. Most of the time it’s the 9 pin rim with a 32” bar on the 500 and 7 pin with a 32” on the 261(unless doing full cuts). I’m also using 95 octane race gas, not regular gas station water/alcohol/whatever else mix. I use Saber oil at just over 38:1 and no smoke or carbon buildup. I also use oil foam air filters. Cutter angles and raker height are crucial, so is chain tension, and I run the saw a little differently. I didn’t notice much of a difference in cutting speed with the bark box until I made the rest of the changes Not everyone can, want’s or needs to run a saw set up like that. That tree guy I know that runs them set his saws up a little more conservative than I did but it’s still worth it for him because those saws run all day long cutting bigger logs for sawmills and firewood and some tree work.
      Just from what I’ve seen in this video I can’t see a bark box doing much for you.

      Don’t feel like running a 20lb saw in 2022.

    Go ahead - make it harder to protect your hearing, slow down your cut, but you can brag over your Bud Light at the bar that you've got the barf box.

    This so stupid to mount a 20 inch bar on a chainsaw which is designed for 16. You loose most of the power, whole thing is heavier , you can easily touch the ground and make chain dull, tou can easily cut in your foot, you waste chain oil. Those crank bearings do not feel happy as well. Jus for for show!

      Stupid is a relative term, but the facts are the saw is “designed” for 16-28 (per the owner’s manual) so we went along with the manufactures recommendation. I will agree the saw is heavier but not as much as you might think. Most people have to cut wood on the ground so the fear of hitting the ground is moot everyone always does it eventually. You could cut your foot with anything so once again moot. Iv got saws that are 15-20 years old that have the same bearings and there easy to change IF you ever had to. Thanks for watching, I suggest you give it a try and see what you think

      You miss understand. You fill the muffler with ear plugs and put the muffs on the saw. Then it’s quiet
