Even Jack Nicholson three years earlier couldn't overcome the stigma. He got great notices for his Joker and was nominated for the Golden Globe, but in the end the Academy snubbed him. Anyway, they nominated Michelle for *Love Field,* instead, which was pure Oscar-bait (i.e., Civil Rights movie).
Eartha Kitt, Halle Berry, Anne Hathaway, and the Catwoman from the 1940s are all great, but none, and I mean no other person has topped M. Pfeiffer, at this role. This was the early 90s. She still wears the crown.
@@darkphoenix474 and that is why they didn't even bother give her a origin story in DKR, cat woman should start as a villain and turn into a anti hero eventually, but that didn't happen with Anne's version
Especially considering how much she hated her costume, it’s impressive she gave as good a performance as she did. She had to be vacuumed into it, was always getting her claws caught on stuff, sweated a lot and had trouble breathing and she made it clear she’d never wear it again no matter how much they paid her. And yet she still have a great performance in spite of all that
After seeing the clip of her using the whip, and people saying she did it without effects... And seeing the raw footage of her laying out the law with that bullwhip... That's f-ing awesome!
Tim Burton did a great job with Catwoman and the Penguin, with the film in general. But he gave these two a lot of depth and made them so badass, that no one else can top them.
She really captured what Catwoman should be if she were real. She might not be the best comic depiction, but her interpretation was probably the best version of Catwoman that could possibly exist.
But that's kind of my issue with Michelle's though. I will give credit where credit is due Michelle KILLED the role of Catwoman AND Selina Kyle in this film but she's not MY Selina Kyle or MY Catwoman And when I say MY Selina Kyle I mean the comic version: orphaned, street-wise and sassy. Who's an: "Anti-Hero-Robin-Hood-Femme-Fatale". My issue with Michelle's Catwoman is not only the stitching on her outfit (though I give a 10/10 on the symbolism and what it does for her character arc) is the fact that she doesn't really know herself like, she almost acted too...Harley Quinn in the film. And like I said I prefer the comic version where she isn't brought back to life from magical cats or pushed around by men and what society wants or expects from a woman, but this is the late 80s early 90s and feminism was on the rise so I digress. But I can appreciate that when the scene called for Selina to just be Selina Michelle delivered and put Selina up front, of course she's not the Selina we meet at first but a more flirty and seductive version of herself and the same applies with Michael with Bruce Wayne and Batman. They both added a sense of childlike awkwardness, immaturity and vulnerability within these two independent and serious characters.
I always felt that her makeup artist deserved an award for the scene where they made her up for the masquerade ball. In my opinion, that is the most beautiful that Michelle Pfeiffer has ever looked...
There's a reason every iteration of Catwoman that's come after this movie has bombed. Michelle set the bar so incredibly high. I still look back at this performance and say, "Damn! That's a good Catwoman."
This is prob for me Michelle Pfeiffer’s trademark role. She looked absolutely stunning and gorgeous. Think was one of the best female roles at the time and it a perfect collaboration of Tim Burton, the whip teacher/choreographer, the costume designer and of course Pfeiffer herself. Also can I mention she actually put a live bird in her mouth!!!
I forgot about the live bird, that was amazing. Maybe not the costume designer considering how Pheiffer hated the costume. She said she had to be vacuumed into it and had trouble breathing sometimes, her claws got caught on everything and both she and Batman’s actor couldn’t pee in their outfits. According to Pheifrer, she will never wear that costume again no matter how much she’s paid. It does make her performance as the Selena more impressive though.
I really adored Michelle's performance as a Catwoman. She embodied the craziness, sex appeal, and anti-heroic characteristics of the character. A timeless performance.
No doubt about it nobody will EVER be a better CATWOMAN period. Stunningly beautiful and just flawless. Wish she would have made a CATWOMAN movie after that newer it's too late n it breaks my heart 😢😢😭
Wow! Didn’t realise she actually whipped the heads off herself , and the skipping at the end is so cool. Actors and films back then were on another plane...
I honestly believe Pfeiffer's Catwoman was the template used for the creation of Harley Quinn in Batman: The Animated series. She started out with blonde hair, and glasses, just as seen in the flashback of Harleen Quinzel when she first met the Joker in Arkham. After the villain holding her hostage is knocked out by Batman, and he leaves, her first words are, "Well... that was... very brief. Just like all the men in my life. Well... then again, there's you... but you need therapy." After the incident, she picks up the stun gun the villain was carrying, showing her need to escape her safe, repressed life for something more dangerous, as was shown by Harleen's first meeting and talk with the Joker in his cell, neither one of them quite ready to move on, yet. The garbage disposal scene shows her insanity casting off her old life to accept her new one, free of her former repressed nature. She wears a skintight costume, and performs various flips and athletic maneuvers, just as seen done by Harley at multiple times in the series.
There's kindness in her charachter. And I found that women who wear leather or civilian boots or anything we find sexy, I imagined at first when I was badly shy they were selfish. But actually they're often times kind. They're amung the women who put coins in beggars hats. And generally kind and it was surprising.
Originally Michael Keaton didn’t want to have Michelle Pfeiffer in the film cos they dated for a while either during or before the films production but they managed to sort out their differences. Their chemistry in this is absolutely electric here. Pfeiffer really did create a complicated yet striking, beautiful, unforgettable, iconic character. Such a shame she didn’t get to continue with the character.
I thought creators originally wanted Michelle to play Vicki Vale in the first Batman and Keaton had a problem with that but obliged for the second film.
To be fair Michelle Pheiffer hated wearing the costume. She said she had to be vacuumed into it and could barely breath sometimes, not to mention her claws got caught on everything and neither she nor Micheal Keaton could move comfortably or pee without assistance which was embarrassing for both of them. I imagine they wouldn’t want to put an actress in that suit again.
I say that the characterization as well as the costume design for Catwoman could have been better if the Batman films of the 90s were made a lot better if Michael Keaton and Michelle Pfeiffer stayed as Bruce Wayne/Batman and Selina Kyle/Catwoman respectively, Tim Burton as an executive producer (not as the director), Dennis O'Neil as a consultant, etc. Not to mention that Michelle Pfeiffer could, if not should, have had her own Catwoman spin-off film(s). Nonetheless, Michelle Pfeiffer's take as Catwoman is not only one of the best interpretations of the character, but also one of Michelle Pfeiffer's best performances.
