Hello neighbors, it's Brad here at etrailer, and today we're taking a look at the Blue Ox Avail Tow Bar on a 2023 Jeep Wrangler. Now there's gonna be five main components that are required for flat towing a vehicle, and starting on the vehicle side, your base plate. Your base plate is going to attach to the frame of the vehicle and become a rigid mount that you can have all of your accessories attached to. And that's going to also give you all the hookup points for it as well. So from our base plate, we have our tow bar, which is gonna be our connection point between the base plate and the hitch on the RV. We also have safety cables here, so that way, in case of an accidental disconnect, we're still attached, and that just attaches to the base plate as well as the safety chain loops on the RV.
We also have a braking system, and that's gonna allow the vehicle to slow and stop as you apply the brakes on the RV. And you also have this breakaway switch that's mounted up here, which in case of a catastrophic disconnect, it's gonna pull this cable and apply the brakes on the vehicle, and that way, it's not rolling down the highway. You also have your diode wiring, which is gonna transmit your light sequence from the RV. So that's gonna include your running lights, turn signals, and brake lights to the taillights on the vehicle, and that way, you stay legal and safe. The Avail is definitely a tow bar that stands out when it comes to capacity.
This is a pretty heavy-duty tow bar, and its max capacity is gonna be 10,000 pounds, which is more than enough for our Wrangler. But if you ever plan on moving up to a larger tow vehicle down the road, this will be able to handle that. So that's really nice peace of mind and having that rating, especially with the Wrangler, you don't ever have to worry about this failing. Now some of the features that it has that I really, really like and recommend to everyone is going to be the non-binding style. So some of your older tow bars, once you're in this locked position after towing, it is really hard to get these to separate and draw your arms back, and you really have to make sure that it's on perfectly flat level ground to be able to do that, but that's not the case here because ours is non-binding and you can see that it's locked here.
I just simply push this down and this is gonna allow us to draw that arm back nice and easy, even if you are on unlevel surfaces. Now as far as adapting to your base plate, we have a Blue Ox base plate on our Wrangler today so this works out really well. But not to worry if you've chosen a different style of maybe Roadmaster, or Demco, or etrailer, you can actually pick up the adapters to put that on your tow bar and it's still gonna hook up. Now it is fairly basic when it comes to added features and that's not really the point, this is heavy-duty, so you aren't gonna have any cable management that kind of keeps all your cables tidy. But it does come with the safety cables, which is a nice little added benefit.
It also comes with a pin and clip to attach to your hitch, as well as the pins to attach to your base plate. Now something that a lot of people go with the Avail for is gonna be the wide span. This is gonna be one of the longer tow bars out there when it's fully extended, and that makes for a much easier towing experience. You can make cuts a little bit easier. So if you're navigating through a gas station or a tight camping spot, this is gonna be a better option for those situations. And when you've reached your destination and you're ready to unhook your flat towed vehicle, it's pretty simple here, you'll just get your safety cables taken off. We'll take our pins out here. (pin clicking) (pin clicking) (pin clicking) And this brings me to another nice feature that the Avail has is the fact that it's kind of free-standing here, you don't see that with other tow bars so that does make it a little bit trickier for hooking up 'cause you're having to fight to pull it up, and the other side's gonna wanna flop. Whereas this one's pretty straightforward. You can kind of get it in there and adjust it without having to fight the gravity of it. So another nice little feature. Now as far as stowing this in the stowed position, pretty easy here. We'll just put our arms together, raise this up, and then at this point, you can choose to store it to one side o
Thanks. How does the base plate mount to the Jeep ? How many bolts on each side ?
