know the feeling bud, redid my tank and just got standard Lacquer not even knowing there was special stuff, was so chuffed how it came out first time painting anything like that....filled tank and it just melted the lot. and your right appreciate the total honesty, its actually this vid that allowed me to find the right lacquer so I feel ya
Benn there, done that, it's frustrating but it's also a learning experience. There's a lot more to a good paint job that meets the eye. Don't beat yourself up about it, spray painting is not easy if you want good results and you'll know more for next time. Cheers
It was looking fantastic. It wasn't your workmanship that was at fault. If you'd had more time before the show you could have redone it yourself and got a great result. I painted my XJR and when the base coat had initially cured for a few days, I had no time constraints so I brought it into the house and left it in the spare room for a week. The heat in the house cured it fully but the smell in the room as it cured was really strong. The Missus wasn't too impressed. Keep the faith.
I think you did a great job with the setup you had and it would have been pretty good had it not been for the reaction of the paints. I've also had a few paint disasters over the years so you're not alone.
I feel your pain, had it happen to me twice so far, don't give up, keep going, this is all part of learning, if you don't have a go then you will never know
Oh bugger. Heart breaking Euan after all that effort. I have learnt so much from your channel and this one is no exception. Keep your chin up, I have no doubt you’ll make the show
I understand your concerns regarding paint mixing and application techniques. To ensure optimal results, it is advisable to adhere to a single paint type, such as 1K or 2k for your projects. I have personally utilized 1kwhich is used with a cost-effective compressor and gun setup, along with plastic curtains, to achieve satisfactory painting outcomes. Additionally, I experimented with metal fleck in my most recent paint job, achieving visually pleasing results. I encourage you to continue your learning journey and refine your techniques through repeated practice.
Oh No , That happened to me once and since then i ALWAYS do the sniff test , The slightest wiff of solvent on the paint means it's still setting (venting) then l just leave it alone before a top coat, It can take days l really feel for you my friend .
Painting can be hit and miss. I used a heat gun to help dry some rattle can paint and clear coat and the clear coat had a similar reaction. I haven’t used a heat gun since. I’m not an experienced painter and just a thought.
I so have been there Euan.... my achilles-heel was WD-40 ruining my first paintjob on my GS450. And then the wrong type of clearcoat F-ed up the second and third paintjob. So I know the feeling. Painting is a skill i so underestimated. Hope all comes together before bikeshed!
I feel for you. We have all been there one way or another and so refreshing to see such honesty on TH-cam. On the plus side, did I spot your photo on p10 of the latest issue of Back Street Heroes? If so, it would be very apt in this of all weeks.
After painting a few bikes in my time I applaud you for having a go. Especially with rattle cans. You did an amazing job, experience lets you know when you can clear or paint the next coats. I was very surprised with the finish ( until it went tits up) that you achieved. Don’t give up, it’s a skill worth learning. And thank you for your honesty, its what makes your channel one of the best I watch Dave
I just did mine, Got all the way through a candy blue to clearcoat stage snd then saw the putty / filler had surfaced through the primer and candy. Money down the drain, effort doen the drain... start over hahaha Emotional rollercoaster.
I have watched your videos for a long time now and you have progressed immensely along the years so a messed up paint job is just another kick in the pants and a step or two forward. We are there for you, some times happy, sometimes sad, but you are our guy. I love your projects and I wish you good luck with all the present and future ones. I just wish I had the opportunity to see them in person but it is a long way from Romania to Scotland :P My current project is the resurrection of my '96 Honda CBR600F3, the carbs are a real pain. Fingers crossed and keep your head up, man!
What a shame, but fair play to you for having a go. I had a new XJR and a custom Vmax so love watching the channel as fascinated to see what you do with them. Keep up the great work 🏍️🎉
It looked amazing! I have to say, I also do everything, but don’t touch paint. I respect painters tremendously. I am starting my XJR build soon, and use your channel for inspiration. Keep up the good work!
I feel for you, but don't be too disheartened. It looked great and well painted until the chemical reaction spoiled the party. I enjoy your videos warts and all. Cheers Richard
Hey Man bloody good effort and I like the colour combo /design looks class hope you’re staying with it. Happens to us all man doing a great job on yer bike 👍🍻
Awe Ewan, so sorry to see this, as it was looking awesome before you put the clearcote on. Hope your man Gav does some magic, and keeps you on track for the BS 👍
Nice try man, seriously : it was looking so good! Well, next time you know what to look out for. Keep up the good work and don’t give up.. there’s no winning or losing in life, just learning 🤙🏽
Dont beat ya self up fella, learn from, make content from it and turn it into a positive :-) I have a gsx 1400 that has been beating me up since I bought it. Fix one thing and another thing breaks. Sick of it 😒
Die Vorarbeit war Mega ! Hättest vielleicht besser ein Schutzfolie überzogen anstatt Klarlack ! Hätte den gleichen Effekt ergeben. Schöne Grüße aus Deutschland
So good until it wasnt..... all for a few extra days drying. maybe next time heatlamps or lightbulbs in a box to help dry the paint?? At least it wasnt the day before the show.
It's rated for painting fumes and chemicals like acids and alkalis. Fresh air isn't hugely necessary if you're not doing it regularly. If you can't smell the paint through the mask, it's not doing you too much harm. That said, overalls and gloves are important too as isocyanate can be absorbed through the skin.
So it would still have worked, if you had given it more time to dry, before clearcoat? Must be difficult to predict, if you can't control the temperature and humidity.
2k base coat is dry in 20 to 30 mins per coat, so 3 coats in 60 to 90 mins then 2k clear same per coat. It's ur high build that's caused ur problems, you needed to seal it with a coat of etch then apply ur base and clear. Do urself a favour and bin the rattle cans, you've got a compressor, get a mini gun and some quality paint and you will not look back, also always try and have ur spray set up at 20 degrees c, if you can👍
@@ShooglyShedMotors don't get disheartened, but always have the attitude it might not go right the first time and you've got to strip and start again, if ur building a show bike use the summer temperatures to do ur paintwork first, keep at it lad 👍👍👍

Damn, that's a real shame! Yeah, painting is one of those things that is just so precarious and controlling the environment is key. What is the solution to avoiding this happening in future? Longer cure time on the base coats?
Just always impressed by how you always give it a go and that's not something you can take away. As you said, nothing ventured nothing gained!
I m truly impressed about your work and the learning you get from it. Keep going on 🙂
Gutted for you mate😢
Its very helpful for me, doing a spray job that goes bad, to know it goes bad for others too. Perhaps to learn why is a bonus.
That's a heart-breaker but a nice recovery. Cheers!

Everyone who works on their bike or car has setbacks. That's why it's so satisfying when it goes right. Chin up and don't let it get you down
awesome mr, bike is lookin great, paint is a pain in the ass, done yourself proud on the whole build, nice lookin ride you have now sir

Everyday’s a school day Euan, no shame in learning the hard way. You’ll go on and do better next time. I feel your pain.

You always put up great content Euan even with the mishaps, keep going mate, looking forward to the end result.
The cracking is my usual outcome. Make sure that the primer is completely dry. And wear rubber gloves.. Learning is hard eh. Keep at it mate.
Gutted for ya but it's a learning curve just time and practice will bring better results I am sure great watch all the same 👌👍

Nothing ventured Nothing gained, talk to a good paint supplier and a good painter a mind full of information and practice it will come.

I know it's a pain, but wear gloves when masking, it helps save adhesion issues later. Good job so far though...

Painting can be very frustrating. We've all made mistakes like that one.
Was that respirator you were using sufficient for 2K paints? I thought you needed fresh air supply for using 2K?

Drager x-plore 3300 mask, A2P3 filters.
So it would still have worked, if you had given it more time to dry, before clearcoat? Must be difficult to predict, if you can't control the temperature and humidity.
I believe maybe. But there may also have been an issue with the base coat can as it didn't cure in the time frame it's meant to.
