I first heard it during the final moments of the last episode of 'Northern Exposure', and I cried and cried as Iris sang and the residents of Cicely, Alaska, whom I had come to know and grown to love over the life of the show, acted out their final scenes. But its principles and values and military valor made life possible for all the rest of us. I don't think its kaddish for their town just yet. America has proved itself more resilient than we thought. Europe may go under, but we won't.
