CLIP DESCRIPTION:
Sofia (Oprah Winfrey) explains to Celie (Whoopi Goldberg) her unwillingness to take abuse from men in her life.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
Based on the Pulitzer Prize-winning novel by Alice Walker, The Color Purple spans the years 1909 to 1949, relating the life of Celie (Whoopi Goldberg), a Southern black woman virtually sold into a life of servitude to her brutal husband, sharecropper Albert (Danny Glover). Celie pours out her innermost thoughts in letter form to her sister Nettie (Akousa Busia), but Albert has been hiding the letters Nettie writes back, allowing Celie to assume that Nettie is dead. Finally, Celie finds a champion in the don't-take-no-guff Sofia (Oprah Winfrey), the wife of Glover's son from a previous marriage. Alas, Sofia is "humbled" when she is beaten into submission by angry whites. Later, Celie is able to forge a strong friendship with Albert's mistress Shug (Margaret Avery). Emboldened by this, Celie begins rifling through her husband's belongings and finds Nettie's letters. Able at last to stand up to her husband, Celie leaves him to search for a new life on her own. A major box-office hit, The Color Purple was nominated for eleven Oscars. The film was co-produced by Quincy Jones, who also wrote the score.

Oprah killed that role
Word.
Period 💯
She did this on the first take! She played Sophia to the tee!!
Roses 4me that’s Oprah?!
WTF? NO WONDER WHY SHE A GOOD ACTOR
“ A girl child ain’t safe in a family of men” realist thing I ever heard
Why?
You people are weird creeps. Maybe children should not be kept with you
Damn sure not in a black family . Least protected women and children are black .
@Kathryn Dorsey Wow project much, you seem like some unhinged psychotic feminist.
@Almighty Sagittarius
Hey, I'm male and I've babysat a lot.
I'm not a nasty bastard though lol.
"you want a dead son in law? you keep advising him like you do" thats an amazing line
It’s the look in her eye when she says it for me 😂😂
This life will be over soon heaven lasts always
I always wondered what Madea was saying after she slapped that kid in the bus for teasing her foster daughter (Keke Palmer)
yep. Tyler Perry makes alot of the jokes in his films from old well-known movies or events and you would miss it if you never saw the movie. lol
*All my life I had to fight... I’d kill ‘em dead before I let him beat me...*
Yuri Boyka IKR?
Who's Harpo?
Alyssa Graves yes! Lol
I understand why Celie told Harpo to beat Sophia, even though it's the worst advice. Abuse is all Celie is use to, she's been sexually and verbally abused by the man who she thought was her father and being physically abused by Albert. That's the only thing she's been around and possibly thought that was the solution to keep anyone in line until she met Shug.
That's still doesn't make sense because if I know I don't like getting hit, beat, or raped. Why would I advise a man who doesn't have that to in him ( Harpo is not a woman beater) to do that to another woman. Especially a woman who look like she can kill him in sec. Celie told Harpo that because she didn't want to be the only one in that house getting beat or manhandled ( disrespect) and told Harpo to do that in a very conniving way.

Actually it makes sense, she was so used to being abused that she thought it was normal.
its a vicious cycle
Harpo= Oprah backwards
I just realized that 😂
Landon ohhh
I don't think Toni Morrison named a character after oprah.
Landon 🤣🤣🤣🤣

Oprah is a good actor she should do MORE films
IMMANUEL 👼 this was 33 years ago. Probably can’t act like this anymore
Seriously?
Just not A Wrinkle In Time rip-offs.
She can act even better now
She is too busy counting her Benjamin’s 💰 💴
Tyler Perry's Family Reunion:
"Who's Harpo?" 😂😂
LMFAOOOOOO , my favorite part 😂😂
Nos go on, go to school, ain't no one gonna mess with you, NOBODY, I'll be waiting for you at 3 o CLACK.🤣🤣
@@galaxywolfgaming_123 “oooooooohhhhh”😂
I felt so bad for Celie, she is a victim of learned helplessness and she is so numb to everything happening around her
"I'll be waiting for you at 3 o clock!"
Alexander Garcia 😂😂😂😂😂
💀😂
("Tyler Perry's - Madea's Family Reunion - "Bus Stop" scene). Hilarious!
All my life I had to fight
I had to fight my daddy, I had to fight my uncles
I had to fight my brothers
A girl child ain’t safe in a family of men
But I ain’t never thought I had to fight in my own house
I love Harpo, God knows I do
But I kill him dead before I let him beat me
Best movie quote ever that still means a lot. And it’s one quote that has a lot of darkness and reality in it. That shows how perfect and wonderful this quote is.
Well said.
Soo good
I love harpo god knows i do Madea said it in harmony
Awe dang it didn't show my one part.
Ceicle: soon it will be over heaven last always.
Sophia: if I was you I would bash mister's head in and think about heaven later
yess! love that line
GamerGurl1997 my favorite line
Love dat line!
You know why she told Harpo to beat Sophia ? Because that's the mind set of alot of women in abusive relationships .they feel its out of love and for their own good ..they are as screwed up as the man abusing them
Fashizzle78. You right. Some women with this warped belief even go as far as judging men as less of men if they don't portray that physical violence towards them.
Solomon Combs actually I think the reason in the story behind Celie telling Harpo to beat Sofia was out of jealousy. Celie was jealous of the fact that Sofia basically ran Harpo and could tell him off without being slapped or forced to do things she didn't want to do. So she wanted to see Sofia broken down both mentally and physically just like she was because of Albert.
AfrikanEmpress 20 I can see that too. Misery loves company and broken people are bitter people. Yet still if you think of the age factor in when Celie was married, beating a woman to put her in line was basically all she knew.
I’m no not really
OSCAR PERFORMANCE ..SHE SHOULD HAVE WON FOR THAT ROLE ALONG WITH WHOOPEE
Full agreement. Absolutely stellar performances from non-professional and rookies actresses. They got robbed that year!
sure did ! ( the politics in holllywood stinks)
my point EXACTLY she got an Oscar for a weaK role, whoopi is a comedienne so for ther to play a character that was so opposite to her norm deserved an Oscar . for the most part. think of all the black Oscar winners and look at the role that got them an Oscar smh its not like they were newbies their past roles on their resume were STRONG roles and they were snubbed. tthey always want us to be remembered as weak, submissive or villains. with the exception of Jamie Foxx( AN OSCAR WINNER for a strong role showing hope and courage in RAY) , but that's just one token to keep us quiet lol I stopped watching the Oscar ever since they didn't even nominate OPRAH AND FORREST for playing in the movie "THE BUTLER" they never want to see and hear the truth from a BLACK POINT OF VIEW.
lol the white world don't want to hear that !!
Great actors, terrible people
This is on my list of the ten greatest movies ever made. Whoopi Goldberg and Oprah Winfrey completely blow me away every time I watch it.
What are the other 9 on ur list of top ten?!
"YOU TOLD HARPO TO BEAT ME!!!!!"
WE GON BE ALRIGHT
Now I know where Madea got this line from
Jose Gonzalez lol and Kendrick
WARNING*********
This movie will leave you dehydrated, but it will be worth it.
You can feel the genuine emotion, stunning performance.
It makes me want to hug her and tell her it's going to be ok.
I think Oprah is gonna OK man 🤣
Me too
These were two actress who were just starting their career. But this scene right here, made them iconic forever more!
Girl child ain't safe in the family mens...I luvs Harpo, Gawd knows I DO, but I'll kill im DEAD fore I let im beat me! - priceless!
WE GON BE ALRIGHT WE GON BE ALRIGHT
This was better than the 2023 movie.
No the newer one was good they both were I can’t compare them.
"Who's Harbo?" 😂😂😂
Destinyand Dynasty Be waiting for you at 3 o'clock. 👊🤜⏲
I don't understand. This movie was snagged of a rightful Oscar.
Of just one?
Very true! It’s an amazing film and book too
I LOVEEEEEEEE this movie so much. I could watch it in a loop for days
I love where Oprah says: “I loves Harpo, God knows I do. But I kills him dead before I allows him to beat me.” Allegedly before Oprah had the Luminary status she enjoys today, Oprah went around with book in hand, doing her best to get the book turned into a movie. I thought it was interesting that the woman who portrays Shug Avery, her last name is Avery. And that Oprah’s love interest is named Harpo, Oprah spelled backwards.
Love Sophia charactar! Also when Celie tells off Harpo at the dinner scene..."If you
hadn't kept trying to rule over Sophia, white folks never woulda got her."
KICK ASS!!!
A man rules over his family
Even though she didn't have as much screen time as everyone else, Oprah nailed it
She was fantastic in this role 😁
this movie is so depressing
Reality is depressing sometimes
Some viewers really think Madea came up with that line first???
This movie was sooooo iconic.
LOL That look like a fist print! XD
Now I know where Madea got that from!
" that look like a fist print "
Harpo is not Celie's 'son-in-law'. He's her stepson. Sofia got it wrong.
In old times, some people referred to stepchildren as that. You can tell this when you look at some census records that not everybody used the same lingo. That, and a lot of old records were just easy to record wrong to begin with if people didnt use a consistent means of documentation and the information was taken by differing peoples who all used varying forms of speech. Especially for the first few censuses that we can see our families appeared in (1870, 80 and 1900) (1890's census being destroyed and all) because most adults were not able to read nor write at that time it was their children who got to go to school but yeah just saying... that if it was a slip it could have been an intentional slip
I don't believe he is either, were Mister and Sealy actually married or was she just his forced labor concubine.
The captions are WILD
This monologue is engraved in cinematic history
The subtitles are hilarious!
Two future talk show greats in one powerful clip!!!
a classic movie. got to get the actual hard copy dvd add to my collection. this is the best
It’s hard watching this after madea quoted it 😂😂
The funny thing is that in real life, Oprah's production company is named Harpo, which is 'Oprah' spelt backwards!
We all know that. Welcome to the party
@@Plplj164 Why, thank you. I didn't know though.
Of course!

One of the Greatest Oscar snubs of All Time!!!!!!
My favorite scene and favorite Color Purple character!
When madea had say it 😭😭
Oprah did so good in this I forgot she was Oprah for a sec 😅 she should’ve stayed an actress
Tyler Perry's future reference on Madea's Family Reunion.
Lol yes and then you hear the little kid in the back say "who's Harpo?" Lol
It's also on Madeas class reunion
Right
This is the same Oprah that gave everybody a car 😩 her acting is so underrated , like how does she not have an Oscar under her belt ?
😭🤣
Very powerful I mean that I will NEVER discredit Oprah for NOTHING!! That scene and many others where powerful amazing
Did she win an award for that???
Kendrick Lamar did this line justice
My favourite movie of all time.
When I first saw this scene I was livid and wanted Sofia to drag celie for what she told hapo to do to her. As I repeatdly rewatch the movie and look back at this scene now I understand why she did it. Being abused and mistreated by ppl all your life can really mess you up mentally and emotionally and being abused sexually mentally and verbally by her stepdad possibly being neglected by her mother before passing away and then being abused emotionally physically and really sexually by mista and mistreated and taken advantage of by other folks as well had obviously taken a toll on her. I felt really bad for both celie and Sofia in this scene and hapo was crazy for even listening to his daddy like he basically set himself up hitting Sofia thinking she wasn't gonna fight him back. At the same time though he grew up watching his daddy beat and abuse celie and probably other girls too so in his mind he felt like it was the right advise to take at the time.
that's oprah??
When I read that Oprah got nominated for an Oscar for this role, I was surprised. I didn't know she actually acted, and she did that so well here!
EVEN MADEA SAID THIS 😂😂😂😂😂
_"All my life I had to bite!"_

One of my fave movie scenes :D
Your not kendrick lil bro
Oprah wad a young actor when the character in the movie "The Color Purple". I was happy to see her success when I saw the OWN network on television.
wow this is a classic
She is a strong and courageous woman who was not afraid to defend herself and her children
Never stop fighting for what you believe in.... ugly things happen in our lives but that don't make you ugly....hold your head up high and keep it moving......
hard times like yah
This must have been cathartic for Oprah to express, because it's true to her life story
lmao, why is this my favorite scene?
Sofia is one of my favorite characters of any movie
"This life over soon.....Heaven lasts always"
i love this scene
I never understood this movie as nuch until I grew up. My mom used to watch it over and over as a kid I thought it was weird. never realized how deep this movie
Very powerful and poignant scene considering what she went thru growing up... :( them tears were real...
my favourite scene
wow very touching....
Oprah telling off Whoppi. I couldn't make up those names if I tried.
Love that movie.
When you come home and dinner not ready ....

I got here because of Jesse Lee Peterson 😂
"All my life I had to fight but I never thought I'd have to fight in brians house"
She killed it!!!!!💯🙌🙌 but i started to thing of madea 😹😹
Funny how Albert also instructed Harpo to beat Sofia, but only Celie got the blame.
Then again, at this time in the story it wouldn't be possible for Albert to understand his wrongdoings. (If you haven't read the book, he has a lot of redemption and Albert and Celie become friends towards the end.)
Oprah: I'm a nominated actress spell it forwards or backwards.
Oprah 🔁 Harpo
All my life I had to fight
Y'all should watch the video were she explains how she got this part. you won't regret it I promise you.
"All my life I had to fight. I had to fight my neighbors. I had to fight the cable guy. I had to fight my sister's boyfriend..."
I've had my electrical meter stolen twice. Came home on both times and thought I didn't pay the electrical. Some crummy stole the electrical meter. Got it replaced, and it was stolen again, until I I told them to bolt it down with a larger lock....
I thought Harpo was Celie's stepson not her son-in-law.
Oprah looks sooo different! Like if you agree.
Damn you madea lmaoo
I read the book but remember none of it lol
