Hey Matt! Great summation of the arm swing thing! I'm actually fairly mindful of my arm swing. On faster efforts I'm careful to keep my elbow angle smaller than 90 degrees.... It really does help to increase cadence. Back in the day it felt weird to keep them moving directly forward and back, but it becomes second nature like any other habit. I don't hammer on my new running clients to get on it, but put together with other aspects of good running form, it adds up to a more efficient, less injury prone runner. Very cool to see how it effects elites though! Keep pushing!
You’re smart to point out that put together with other things adds up to a more efficient runner. Taken on it’s own, it doesn’t have a huge effect, but everything together is more than the sum it their parts.
Great video!! I totally agree with the arm swing. You see all styles of arm swing with common runners and the professionals. Great Article!! Last week went well with 35 miles. It was an off week for me due to work this weekend. The milage was productive.
Good to hear you still get to log a solid week even when it's a work weekend! 👊🏼 Yes, there are a lot of funny looking arm swings out there, even with the pro runners!
Great video, perfect timing. I had been watching videos on arm swing, and kept hearing about limiting rotational movement, swinging and straight forward and back. I've been doing that for a couple months, but in my effort to drop my HR, I relaxed and let a little natural rotation back in... and my HR dropped 2-3 beats instantly and I felt so much more relaxed! I went on vacation last week for the first time in 13 years... I only got 1 run in along a cliff path, it was incredible.
There is a lot to be said for running how our bodies feel naturally inclined to move! While I’m sure some would argue that changing has its benefits, I’m also sure that for most people the juice isn’t worth the squeeze. I’m so glad you enjoyed your vacation and your run. 😁
It’s amazing the impact that not swinging arms can have! Even more noticeable when you’re running with a rugby ball, trying not to get flattened! Lol. Good week of running under your belt! I’m hoping for a good week of running next week while on holiday in Portugal 🇵🇹
I looked at it from the other side: it’s amazing how little impact not swinging your arms can have. I haven’t run with a rugby ball since school, so my memory is a little hazy. 🤣 Enjoy your hols and especially running in a new place!
Great analysis, Matt. The better part of a tenth of a second over that distance isn't negligible. For an aspiring pro football player, 4.3 seconds for 40 yards instead of 4.4 might be worth hundreds of thousands of dollars. But for recreational runners, I think it's less about a percent or so here or there and more about avoiding disasters, when we have to walk the last 3 miles or spend 20 minutes curled up beside the road weeping. If arm carriage lowers eccentric muscle work or the torsional load on some joint, that could matter after weeks and months of running for hours at a time. I had a fine enough week of running, my usual 35 miles, two workout days and 10 miles in a social run on Saturday. It's been damp and a bit rainy here but the temperatures are back down to something more spring-like so that's a plus. Rock on!
Oh yes, something minor becomes something major over time, so it’s unlikely the results can be extrapolated to our distances! You’re right about (almost) 1/10th not being negligible in football, but in a Universal timeline, it could be. I suppose it’s a matter of perspective. Great week of running and I’m glad the temps are more comfortable for you! 👊🏽
Thanks for the welcome back, although we were only away for 4 days, so it barely feels like we were gone! 😀 Your arm swing has got you a long way, so I agree it's probably not worth changing it (until you feel fulled trained in every other aspect of your running 😂).
Great article! Hutchinson's science is indeed gold! I'm gearing up for peak weeks in sunny Central Florida for a marathon in Denver. Really enjoying your videos!
Thanks, Katy! Are you running Colfax this weekend! If not, which race are you running? Be sure to check back in on Monday and let me (all of us) know how it goes! I’m especially interested to hear how the elevation effects your perceived exertion! Good luck!! 👊🏽 I just reread you comment about how you’re hearing up for peak weeks, so clearly you’re not running Colfax! 🤣
Interesting, I couldn't run without a little movement but not too much that would cost extra energy and encourage shoulder aches. My week was good I did a mile TT test and got a new PB not as much as I wanted from my previous but I think that I need race conditions to really get them PBs. I got my new watch and I have been figuring that out, I also got my dad out and took him to his first parkrun and run in years, I managed a solid 3 at the run. I then went to the National Running Show in the UK and got and tested loads of nutrition products so I can practice with different gels for upcoming races. I tried on my first pair of carbon plated shoes (the Hoka range) and I can see the appeal, I also got to see Paula Radcliffe and have some talks with nutritionist. Today I did an easy run with some hill reps and a long bike so a good start to the week.
Great going getting that mile PB! Any PB is one to be celebrated! 🥳 It sounds like the Running show was brilliant! I've been following along on social media. Paula Radcliffe is popping up all over the place on people's feeds. I have a photo with her from a couple years ago at the Disney Marathon! Did they let you go for a bit of a trot when you tried on the Hokas?
@@its_Matt_B_ yeah, I did a few sprints, turns and jogs in the rocket X, Bondi X and the carbon X 2. I like the carbon X 2 the most but I'm not a fan of the upper and lack of tongue so I think I'll look around and try more pairs on before I wanted to invest in a pair of carbon shoes.
Great video Matt - good reminder about the arm swing I’ve been taking last few weeks off - recovering from a tight achilles that appears to be linked to a stiff calf muscle. Not sure if you’ve dealt with anything like that before but trying to get closer to 100 percent instead of running through it. Killing me not to be out there enjoying my daily runs !! Thanks for the great videos !!
I'm really impressed that you're waiting to be 100% before getting out there again. I know how hard that must be! What percentage do you think you're at now? How much longer do you think you'll be off? No, I've never had a tight Achilles that gave me discomfort while running. Sometimes it has seemed tight, but nothing that has given me pause. I've put it down to normal running aches and pains when it's happened.

I don't like my arm swing 😒 but it doesn't sound like it is worth to change it 😆😆😆😆. Great video Matt! And welcome back

Completed the RunGatwick 10K yesterday! Came 22nd / 550. Not a PB for me but definitely the closest to the front I've ever been!
Nicely done, Sam! 22/550 is an absolutely massive result! Great running! 💪🏽

@@reecedawson6113 good plan! There are so many out there now that there’s no point buying a pair that isn’t perfect for you!

Fun data!
Running data is the most fun data, although admittedly not always the most useful. 🤣
