Traditional Judo at its best. Such a wide selection of ways to cause an opponent misery from what too many judoka and bjj-ers dismiss as a basic hold down.
It saddens me that the nuances of osaekomi-waza are a vanishing art due largely to the current IJF contest rules. Nowadays, once "Osaekomi!" has been called it has become a matter of holding on for dear life for 20 seconds. Incidentally I prefer the old 30 second time limit because it forced you to ensure you had a really secure hold locked on since the opponent had more time to escape.
If I'm not mistaken, Sensei's pressure-on-the-ribcage version is also a submission, is it not, since it disrupts the opponent's ability to breathe? 😊
Too bad Sensei's elbow-on-the-face version isn't allowed in tournaments. 😆
Thank you for another priceless lesson. HAPPY HOLIDAYS! 🥋🎅☃️🎄🎁🍾🥂🎊🎉

Domo Arigatou Sensei. I’m happy you found this video useful. Yes, pressure against the ribs cause compression on the lung making it a challenge to breath. I agree, 30 seconds demonstrates hold effectiveness and control - Osaekomi. Best wishes for the happiest of holidays and good health and success in 2023. Riki yori

Thank you Seva, it's truly our pleasure! Riki sensei showed us these in February and I just now got around to editing the footage. Lots more in the pipeline!

We have the same holding in our Jujutsu system but we just call it Ude-Gatame. Good to see old techniques coming back!
