- The 2002 JSU Marching Southerners perform a powerful Spanish themed exhibition at Bands of Ameraica national finals in Indianapolis, IN. The show consists of a short opener, "Pictures of Spain", then immediatley into Biezet's "Carmen", followed by the powerful closer, "Malaguena" as only the Southerners can play it. The Southerners demonstrate that a marching band can truly produce a work of art, instead of just a football game halftime show.
I marched in this show. This was one of my favorite songs to play.
As did I. My first year there as a trumpet player. Man did that year give me chills…every time. lol
@@bryancochran3423 I didnt march in this since i wasnt even born yet, but my band director was Ben Milam. The Mellophone player at 2:07. Super cool to see him back in his younger days before he was even a teacher.
@@longloopslad1974 Awesome! I remember Ben!
OMG... Who JSU ? WOW , I thought this was Pro Drum and Bugle... I bet they make the Football team play at halftime instead. Amazing!!
Phenomenal! My ears are having multiple eargasms!
Probably my favorite version of this song by my favorite college band!!
Very Very Nice...Stan Kenton would LOVE this!!!!
My highschool marched a Sanatana Malaguena show last year. And it's by far my favorite show out of the 5 years of marching.
this show honestly feels like a corps show with the energy and the wall of sound
Well most of them do or have marched DCI, so...
I have recently discoverd them, and they absolutelty sound much like the very best corps from the late 1980's to the early 2000's, same cords. their later stuff is more in line with the top corps from 2005+. I feel that "Angles Among Us" was the show that the Jack State Marching Band should be known for. THe angels show was not a cover, and it was very, very, very well done.
The Scouts set the bar pretty high for Malguena, but I really like this version.
@@dr.burtgummerfan439 Not sure MOST marched core, but I am very sure some of them marched with a corp. I know alot of them are music majors, but still, marching in a corps is very expensive, and time consuming.
@@kevinkelley3657 I marched Southerners waaayyyy back in 82. There were tons of Spirit people, a couple from the Cadets, and a guy from Blue Devils. Maybe it's different now, but Spirit and Southerners have a pretty symbiotic relationship.
I'm in this!!!
HOLY CRAP THIS IS HUGE!
It's almost 2024 and this show still stands the test of time as an all-time great. What a sound! From a WVU Pride of West Virginia grad and long time drum corps fan, WOW!
Honestly....its hard to comment with tears in my eyes. What a display of talent and dedication to this wonderful American art form. How could anyone not be moved by these fine young people.

Fantástico, perfecto!! , muchas gracias por estas versiones musicales Españolas tan bonitas y diferentes.
También vuestra coreografía.
Espectacular!! Colosal!! Magnífico!!. Bravo.
Un saludo desde España.
OUTSTANDING! Best college marching band show I've ever seen! They're like a world class drum and bugle Corp!
Just stumbled on this video, I played in the Southerners in 1964-65 under David Walters Direction. With only 100 players in the band we still blew people away in the Lyndon Johnson Inaugural Parade. Love this music so much. It was so much fun.
William McAnelly Aren't Conn 20J horns 6/4 BBb "Tubas"?
From a Troy fan... THAT WAS PHENOMENAL
Absolutely outstanding for a U band. Impressive af!
And not ONE wood wind instrument was heard throughout the entire show.
6:47 it’s a time stamp for myself for later
20js not tubas
I marched that year
20j's are tubas lol sissyphones and contras arent
A 20j is completely useless, unless it is playing pedal tones......neat thing is, a 20j can play pedals tones at any pitch below middle c.
@@kevinkelley3657 it technically isn’t a tuba, it’s a Conn 20J upright recording bass. So glad I got to march one for as long as I did. And you’re wrong about only pedals, knew a few others who marched who would play high a(top of the staff) all the time just because they could
At 8:15 the man with the middle silver trumpet is my highschool marching band instructor, and this year we're doing a show of Carmen and the Spirit of The Bull!!!!
Love that "One More Time Chuck Correa" tag.
That was a fun show to march
I love the "GO TUBAS!" in between songs! :D
I love the "GO TUBAS!" in between songs! :D
Tubas are the best
and for such a large amount of horns tone and sound quality was amazing!!!
Kick ASS ! Love the performance! Need to work on marching technique to be cleaner, sound it well balanced !
Lol woodwinds
This was the arrangement I did for Drum Major tryouts... I ended up on the 50 yardline out of two other Drum Majors.
The Mississippi State year!!!!
At 3:45, the high school kids in the audience be all like: "Huh? Where are all the electronics?"
Just happened to stumble across this and glad I did. Outstanding performance!
@MrMatt29732 96.6 ! is what I would have given it.. Great sound balance, drum line clean... guard clean .. show nicely written and excited !
The tubas sound so good here
That’s because they’re recording tubas. And it’s also why we use so many lol. They were designed for sound quality not so much projection.
BLOW SOUTHERNERS BLOW!!
I miss jsu and the Southerners so much and loved this show
William McAnelly it’s 2020 and I still miss this show. The southerners came to my high school that year and performed and my brain still isn’t quite in the same composition as it was prior. You guys marched the field to muddy glory and I haven’t forgotten it.
I marched that year
William McAnelly man that’s awesome
William McAnelly well thank you for your contribution because this show is why I went there.
@@AnnaH-qt9nl If I'm not mistaken, i believe a southerner or two lost a shoe in that field. Like marching on a bowl of tapioca.
Powerful!!!
ONE MORE TIME !!!!
excellent music the guard requires exact movements to show off the timing of the music ... a little sloppy...
