2019-2021 Toyota Camry LED Headlight Disassembly

  • In this video I will be taking apart a LED Headlight from a 2020 Toyota Camry LED Headlight.
    Please note that this is the base model headlight and is not the version with full LED. This is the base version that has a separate replaceable turn signal bulb.
    The LED ballast is built into the projector. If the LED or ballast fail, complete replacement of the headlight will most likely be necessary.

    Well it's nice that Toyota made the headlight assembly modular so it can be disassembled. Some companies make a single assembly that's all molded together so if you crack or break one part of it, you have to replace the entire thing. And this is a good thing for Toyota because a replacement light assembly is around $1800 (per side) according to Toyota's website. In fact I saw a wrecked 2019 in a yard and considered buying the headlights from it as spares to keep on the shelf just in case....

    Someone needs to explain to me why Toyota would not make the bulb interchangeable. I know LED's don't usually burn out, but should there be an issue with a bulb you need a whole new headlight assembly as opposed to a $30 pair of LED's from amazon.

    How difficult was it to disconnect the lens from the rest of the headlight assembly? On some headlights you have to heat/bake the headlight to soften the sealant. Does this headlight have sealant that needs heat to be removed or was is it just a matter of removing screws and plastic clips to take the lens off? Thanks in advance and for this video!

    • @gftgrill
      @gftgrill  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Like most modern headlights this is sealed/glued together. I cut the lens off as I don't put these back together. You can use the heat/bake method which in my experience takes about 30-40 minutes to get lens off.

    Thank you for this interesting video. I read that there is only one LED in this headlight assembly and the high beam is achieved by a cover that moves to either partially block light output or move out of the way and allow full light output. I've never seen these get stuck in an open position. They require power to open and have a spring mechanism to push them closed when power is removed.
      I'd double check that there's not an open circuit/constant power to the high beam solenoid or just take the light out and give it a good whack to see if you can shake it back into the proper position.
      I assume your light is LED. if it's xenon you can you remove the bulb and use a chop stick to poke at it through the rear of the light to force it to move.

    Would you happen to know if the US and Japanese headlights are the same? I want to import Japanese headlights just for the clear side markers, and just keep my stock ones and sell them a few years later when good condition headlights are in demand. What are the odds that I could plug in the Japanese headlights?

    • @gftgrill
      @gftgrill  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm not sure about the lights electrically, but Japan is RHD and US is LHD, so by default the projector will have the cut off in a way that it shines MORE light into the face of oncoming traffic. This "could" result in tickets, accidents, or failed inspection.
      Physically they should fit and bolt directly to the car.
      I know the US has multiple versions with different wire harness connectors, you would have to be sure it matches up or you will have to do some rewiring.

      The actual LED chip lasts a very long time - a few hundred thousand miles of driving. The issue with these LED headlight assemblies is there are many components in addition to the LED chip and these other components are much more likely to fail, making the entire headlight assembly not function properly. It is a poor design with the goal of making people buy entire headlight assemblies and profiting Toyota!

    Can anyone tell me if this is the same headlight as in the nightshade edition? What is the compatibility for nightshade parts?

    • @gftgrill
      @gftgrill  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It appears that the nightshade uses the standard SE headlights. which are almost identical to this one except that they have black trim instead of chrome. This is pretty standard on most of Toyota's headlights. The SE models come with black headlights that the other models do not get.

    • @number1toni
      @number1toni 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@gftgrill Thank you! So the LED projectors are pretty much interchangeable? Our nightshade's headlight wire was chewed through by some animal (right where it goes into the headlight assembly, too close to splice in a new wire) and they are saying it will be almost 2000$ to fix. Obviously, I have no desire to pay so much for a wire, so I'm trying to find out the easiest way to DIY

    • @gftgrill
      @gftgrill  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@number1toni if I'm reading this correctly, your wire was damaged near the rubber grommet where the wire enters the light. If that is the case, get a pair of pliers, pull the grommet/wire out of the light and splice in an extension to the damaged wire.
      you should be able to tuck the splice back into the light and use some silicone to seal the bottom of the light. it won't be pretty, but you should be able to get it done for about 20 dollars if you need to buy wire, splicers, and silicone sealant.
      if you're careful enough, you could probably drill a hole into the rubber grommet, push a wire through and just splice/solder the wire back to the harness on both sides of the grommet. then you you seal the grommet around the wire and everything should be functional again. Just triple check that you are connecting the correct color wires on both sides of the grommet.
