I thought I was doing so well. Just as I got up to elevation, I started throwing up and being very sick. I sat down for a while hoping it would subside but it didn't.
I made the tough decision to come back down. After that I was told I probably saved my own life. I feel vindicated but still disappointed. Not disappointed in myself but just disappointed that I'll have to wait for the Sierra.

I'm glad you turned around! I've been worried about you climbing that high with your COPD and also having to go through some of those water crossings!
Just jump ahead to an area of the trail that isn't so high in elevation and enjoy your trip! You're not doing a thru-hike anyway so just have fun and be safe!!!!

Hi Groceries! I followed your AT hike and just recently found your channel again. As a 70 year old with health problems I can't tell you how much I admire your determination to get out and enjoy your life. I think your new plan is very wise and hope you don't beat yourself up over the decision to re-group. You will get there, and I'm confident you will be happier taking the pressure off a bit for now. Be safe and hike on!

Hight altitude can be brutal. Skiing in Colorado was not bad during the day, but the nights were pure screaming hell. Every time I moved, all I could do was lay there and gasp and hyperventilate. Glad that you turned back to make a different plan.

I like the idea of a finger O2 monitor. I use my Apple watch. It seems fairly accurate when I compare at my doctor’s office. Yes. Many of us worry about you. But I understand that sometimes it’s worth the risk to accomplish a goal. I’m very proud of you for what you do and am happy that you are sharing this journey with us. Thank you.

I’m sorry you feel deflated. You can always go back and do the Sierra at another time so it seems to be the best plan to jump ahead. Take care and happy trails.🤘🏻🥾⛰️

Have been in ICU with mountain sickness. It can be pretty miserable. Glad you made the wise if tough decision to do back down the mountain. Not worth taking risks.

Dizziness, headache and nausea: yes it seems like altitude sickness. I had these symptoms in Chile when we hit 4500m (14’800 feet). We went back to the village and next morning I felt awful. The lady at the hotel gave me a funny smelling herb tea, and it helped a lot. Then I went to the local clinic to get oxygen, ahhh 😆 After that all went fine. Altitude sickness is no joke, getting back to lower altitude is a very wise choice, instead of continuing and it gets worse and you are further away in. Very wise of you 👍 Enjoy Northern California 😀🌞

Thanks. I was told that vomiting is a sign that's it getting bad. Headaches and nausea is ok but vomiting is a red flag.

Good decision to turn around even if it wasn't what you wanted to do ❤️ Altitude sickness is not to be messed with, Especially alone on trail . Hope you've rested and regrouped . Looking forward to the future ❤️🇨🇦

Good try and wise decision to turn around. Give yourself more time to get used to altitude. I seem to recall that some nausea pills caused drowsiness and shortness of breath. Happy Trails. Good Luck, Rick

Sorry about the altitude sickness I have lived above the 9000 ft level for so long I forget about you flat lander's .
You could go up to Sierra City it's a green tunnel from there to the Marble Mts and they are lower elevation

O2 levels are low at elevation and then when you throw in the exertion of the climb, it is rough. Wonder how much a finger O2 monitor would weigh? Now I'm curious and will probably go weigh mine. Better to be safe than sorry and live to climb another day! Edit: O2 monitor: 2.9 oz with packaging 1.6 oz without. How much does Baxter weigh? JK!!! Don't tell him I tried to replace him. 🤣

+Too bad. I have been following you for awhile now. I am 69 years old. I have lived in Mammoth Lakes ever since spending nine years ( in my 30s) thru hiking. I was hoping to see you when you got here.
You mentioned losing weight when you hike, and gaining when between hikes (and COPD). This kinda sounds like you are still eating carbs. They are more deadly every year older that you get. Since I do not thru hike anymore, I can afford to lose weight on a hike. Even a slender person has at least 15 to 20 pounds of fat that can be used without distress. When I go out now I only pack one pound of nutrient-dense food per day and get my calories from stored fat. My longest recent trip (without resupply) was 22 days on 22 pounds of food and 12 pounds of body fat. (It was an easy trip, I usually average a pound of fat per day.)
Remember, a gram of fat has 2 1/4 times as many calories as protein or carbs, and it is easier to carry on your body than in your pack! Your hiking days are numbered unless you cut out the carbs (because of the metabolic disorders that they cause). They prevent you from being fat-adapted, which means being able to transition between carb metabolism and fat metabolism without distress. Another benefit, when burning ketones I feel euphoric, compared to when burning carbs. You do not seem euphoric in your posts. You seem to be struggling.
With some metabolic changes it can be fun again!....we have to take better care of ourselves as we get older.
Another benefit is that I am never hungry anymore. I used to obsess constantly about the restaurant at the end of the trail. I am much more present to my wilderness experience now that I am free of constantly wishing that I had something that I cannot have!
    FREEDOM!

I'm carnivore off trail. I try to be ketovore on trail but it's not always possible.
I agree totally about diet. That's why they call me groceries lol. I'm always bitching about food on trail. 😊
