I'm an old USAF fighter pilot, and I attended several reunions of the First Fighter Wing P-38 pilots in the 1970's, I combined their stories with Romanian ace Dan Vinzanty's story, which I found on the Internet. I made a video, "P-38s attack Ploesti WW II" for TH-cam and Facebook. It is also a major story in my book, "The Spirit of Attack". The IAR-80s got warning and were above the P-38s which came directly over the IAR-80's airfield. Attacking from above and with surprise, the IAR-80s won the battle. The American P-38 pilots did not agree with Dan Vinzanty's story. Dan Vinzanty told of 100 P-38s, but really engaged only one squadron of 12 P-38s and all P-38 losses were from that one squadron. The other P-38 squadrons were largely unaware of the IAR-80 attack. The surviving member of the 71st Fighter Squadron, which was shot to pieces, mis-identified the IAR-80s as German FW-190s. In the actual dogfight, the IAR-80s had altitude, surprise, and the advantage in numbers.
Actualy, the target was the fighters on the ground and not the oil fields about 3 hours before the expected time of the bombers. However the soldier manning the radar ran off to the toilet and went missing for about 15 min. Realising this, he souded the alarm just to be sure(the alternative was the firing squad). It so happened that the IAR 80s were in the air when the P38s appeared. 17 P38s were lost according to the americans and 24 according to the romanians.
All aero engineers everywhere in the world think the same way. The only difference is the materials and engines available and the requirements they’re saddled with.
An excellent work on this IAR 81 is: "Vanator - Romanian Hunter The I.A.R.80 and I.A.R.81 in Ultimate Detail", by Radu Brinzan (2014, STRATUS for Mushroom Model Publications). Thank you for an excellent video.

So let me get this right. There were 48 P-38s engaged in this fight. Eight of these P-38s were lost in return for five Romanian fighters lost. ...And all five Romanian fighters fell to just one P-38 fighter pilot? Seems kinda unlikely. Maybe not impossible, but the P-38 pilot would have had to have been both incredibly talented and very lucky. Did no other US pilot claim a victory on this mission?
Romania loose 5 fighters 3 in dogfight + 2 in an air collision in midair. 12 P38 were shoot down, identified on the soil. From romanian perspective mr. Hatch could downed only 2 romanian fighters. Because of the low altitude most of the pilots end dead.
Dan Vizanti , the comander of the 6th group counted 24 P38 and 3 loss to the romanian side : Lt.Nicolae Limburg , Adj. Tari and Adj. Giurgiu. The single survivor of those 96 P38 was the comander who was the first downed too..
@@leonardusius1968 somme went out of sight but 24 downed in total . In my village in Romania there is one such american plane crashed into a hill.12 were downed right on the spot plus 12 that were soo badly destroyed and crashed who knows where in Romania. The american pilots from the plane that crashed in my village lived with the peasants and shepherds for like a month ,before they were caught by romanian army. Romania had much more strict counting than germans. If there is no wreck then the plane wouldnt have been counted. Our aces with 50 kills ,have in fact probably double kills that didnt counted. Germany counted everything thats why they have aces with 300 kills.
Wish they were available in more WW2 air combat simulation games, though slower, & less firepower, they were extremely nimble, & could outmaneuver everybody else…
The fact that Romania produced this incredible fighter is in and of itself an outstanding achievement. Hats off to you, Romania.
The main portion of the planes were made from Polish produced PZL 24 that landed in Romania after the Nazi invation. That s why modifications ended.

The profile of the IAR 81 reminds me of the F4U Corsair.

si misiunea era sa atace aerodromul pe care se aflau escadrilele de vanatoare. Cel putin asta stiu eu.
