Hi Marvin - thanks for choosing this video to review! I wrote the music arrangements for this show. There are currently seven music arrangers who provide the music for the band;'s dynamic shows, and we appreciate the nod to our contributions of their performances! I can add that the 'Lord of the Rings' was the music during the two giant rings on the field. Some who commented that the music 'wasn't very loud' should view the original video as it was filmed - it is much different than what you hear through Marvin's computer in this video, and the crowd reaction during the show is simply amazing! To date - this is THE most viewed halftime show in the history of this marching band with well over 25 million hits so far, and it was also the impetus for Apple filming a commercial that included the Jurassic Park T-Rex in motion (subtly eating a Michigan player and then spitting out the helmet!). The band is now employing the full use of iPads purchased through grants and other funding, and all charts and designs you see on the field are viewable by each member during their daily two-hour rehearsals.
Having marched in a 330 piece band in hs, I can attest to the amount of work a marching band puts into learning not only the music but the sets. In my experience, the band actually puts in significantly more practice than the football team, both during the summer and each week during marching season.
Superman, Lord of the Rings, Harry Potter, Jurassic Park, Pirates of the Caribbean they drew things from those movies while playing the music from them.
@@HollywoodF1 it's also the title of the video. And the announcer makes several comments about the titles of the film's but he often talks over the announcer
@@bookdoc3225 That was my first thought too. My first ever tOSU game was an alumni game and I've always thought the 4 simultaneous Script OHIO's were the best tradition in all of sports by far. Though almost everyone in my family went to Ohio State and my aunt was a prof. So I'm more than a little bit biased haha.
This is the world's largest brass band (only brass horns and drums), with 192 members marching the shows and 36 alternates. They practice 30 hours/week, while maintaining a full academic schedule.
I love how they where white shoes with no fear .... white shoes are forgiving if one person is out of step you notice it more in white instead of black shoes
@@lisaray9944 That's why they do it, so you can see that they are never out of step. It's actually white spats over black shoes. They don't wear them when they march in parades; they tuck them into their belts.
@@shannoncaskey5294 Time to start practicing what the band chants every time they take the field at halftime - "Pick your feet up, turn your corners square and drive, drive, drive."
He seemed confused by the phone on the side, not realizing it's supposed to be the phonebooth that Clark Kent want into and Superman comes out of. Also about some people not having seen phonebooths, some even younger people have never even seen pay phones
The drum majoy can be a guy or a girl, they usually use a whistle. Some direct with their big baton as you have seen. Other drum majors just clap their hands instead. Drum majors usually aren't drummers. They are usually sax, trumpet or clarinet players. They just set the tempo for the bass drums & it's easy for the rest to follow along even if you can't see or hear the drum major. Does that help or just confuse the issue? Prost - Greg
@@marvinreacts2227 If you like marching bands, you should check out the Cavaliers' James Bond performance from 2004. It's amazing! Here in America, we have something called Drum Corps International (DCI), where young people from ages 13 to 21 can audition and spend their money and their summer in one of several drum and bugle type bands, practicing and touring and performing shows around the country. The individual drum corps also compete against each other during the summer and the competitions culminate at the end of the summer in Denver, Colorado, with the championship competition called the Summer Music Games. The Cavaliers are one of the best of the drum and bugle corps in DCI and their 2004 performance of James Bond was PHENOMENAL!!!
They have a lot of good ones besides the Blockbuster show, the Michael Jackson Tribute, John Williams Tribute, they were invited by the NFL to go to London and did a British Invasion show where the basic reaction was 'oh my God that amazing, I've never seen anything like this' and so many other good shows . The fact that the audience stays and watches shows that they are good.
Hello, I'm a member of this band, and I just wanted to say thank you for reaching to our show! It's always nice to see new people enjoying our performances. This is one of my favorite shows, even though it's a bit older, from before my time in the band. If anyone has questions about the OSUMB I'd love to answer them!
The ones you didn't get= Harry Potter. Harry catching the golden snitch. The T- rex ate the other teams mascot & the last one was a skull & cross bones. The Buckeyes are the state of Ohio's tree.
Unfortunately, sport rivalries make it difficult for a lot of Americans to appreciate marching bands, often. As someone with zero interest in sports, the OSU marching band is just far superior to any other. It isn’t a rivalry thing, it’s just obvious. Also, OSU is an ENORMOUS university and people in the band are from all across the country and the world. I wish people could set aside their sport rivalries and truly appreciate just how wonderful the band is.
I'm a Michigan fan but a musician and former marching band member so I fully appreciate what they do. Plus, you'd be surprised by the amount of talented individuals in Ohio in general.
I don't know about that. In Big Ten country we love our marching bands. OSU though is special and in another league. The Japanese oddly have found a love for marching bands though thru GIs
I believe it's the TV halftime shows that prevent people from seeing how good or bad the bands are and TVs speakers just don't do justice to bands anyway. The only folks who see these shows are guys back in the stadium after their halftime pee and going to the concession stands to get mixers... er..um...coke to take back to their seats. Due to capacity and the rigamarole it takes women about 3x as long for their halftime pee... I therefore submit that the actual audience for the marching band (Ohio State or Univ of Ohio) are people in the stadium with semi empty bladders... so probably only 66% of those in the stadium. Of that subset there are folks on cell phones, taking selfies or just bullshitting with their friends. So while it might be the best damn band on the land or whatever... I estimate people watching is nobody at home & only 50% of the stadium... Is it difficult, yes, is it high pressure on every member to remember all theit steps, yes. Is it harder to play trombone if you're playing in MN & your mouthpiece just tore off 1/3 of your lip. I think the rivalry is just imagined... All band players respect & want to hear/see excellent performances... I just think you are asking for more band boosters than you're going to get!
@@caclayton2007 like Marvin said, you cant really claim that one is better than the other because they are so different. I would say the Aggie band is the Army Rangers and Ohio State band like the Navy Seals, Both are elite but their jobs and the way they go about things are different.
Also you really should watch Script Ohio. It's what TBDBITL is known for. Also there are 195 Marchers and 36 Alternates. Alternates are used to take the place of somebody who is absent for whatever reason. Also if a regular member really screws up they can be replaced with an alternate and they become an alternate themselves.
The script writing of OHIO at the beginning of the game is a video that Marvin should review. It has been 30 years since I attended a Buckeye game and remembering the script writing of Ohio still gives me chills. Oh yeah, the football team is pretty good too.
The OSU band is really loud because it is all brass and percussion. No soft-spoken woodwinds. 200 bandmen fill up the stadium which seat 103,000. By contrast the TA&M band marches roughly 360 people but they include woodwinds.
its also a University marching band so basically every 4 years there is a complete change over of members. To keep a high level like this every year is impressive feat as well. The football teams whose games they play at would die for that level of consistency
Yes this is true, but most of the students come from high schools that have their own marching bands. So this means they have already marched for years before going to the university band. This is an American tradition with our half- time shows at football games.
@@miekaash6831 actually, TBDBITL members may be there on scholarship, however it will not be for the band but something else; academic most likely. The band is an extra curricular activity. One must audition each year, regardless of past participation. Members can march for a total of 5 yrs in the band. My son was in the band during this period - when they began these sorts of drill, the Apple commercial, the championship games, and the London trip. He would send me a screen shot of his drill with him circled so I could find him on the field. He marched sax in HS and since the band is brass and percussion only, figured his band days were over. He missed marching so much that over Christmas break his freshman year, he borrowed a friend’s trumpet, taught himself to play and in the spring, auditioned. He made it and even though he graduated after 4 yrs, he stayed enrolled in 1 class so he could march the remaining 2 yrs of eligibility. The friends he made in TBDBITL are still friends today and certainly his time in the band was the highlight of his university experience.
The most amazing thing about these top marching bands is they play the music perfectly as they move in their choreographed alignments. Perfection! The Drum Major is a showman, and this one is flawless. I'm not even an Ohio fan, but respect is deserved!
There are 192 on the field, all brass or percussion (the rest are alternates that they keep on the "roster" in case someone is unable to perform that week).
Ohio is always tops. They have been doing this for 141 years. TBDBITL. The Best Damn Band in the Land. There are about 228 members last that I remember. The fella with the baton is the drum major. He leads the band into the stadium. The broom is Harry Potter. The phone booth was Superman These are all movies from Hollywood. Ohio State and Michigan are extreme rivals.
Texas A&M is a traditional military style marching band, and surely the best of its type. Ohio State is a show band, and also the best of its type. Comparing them is like comparing apples and oranges.
Thank you for this explanation. I was reading through the comments to see of anyone else would explain this before I put in my two cents. Military marching bands are primarily geometric shapes, precision and marching goal line to goal line. I marched in a military band some 30 years ago. "Show bands" routines are geared more towards entertainment. The use of props, pyrotechnics and dance performance. Both Ohio State and the Aggies are top tier in their style. But it is futile to try and compare the two.
@@cassandraferrell1970 I was raised in Texas before the modern style of marching band took hold. There were some show bands, but I would say most were military style at that time. Even now, there is a huge tradition of military style bands in Texas, and they have a separate state marching contest for them. Google NAMMB.
I love this show. As a guide, the first one is Clark kent going into the phone booth and turning into superman, then pushing a building back up from falling. There are then some figures that idk what they are, then there is the sign of the book and movie series Harry Potter. Harry is then shown on his broomstick catching the snitch, a flying ball in a sport played in the series. The third is Jurassic park, where a dinosaur is shown eating someone. The fourth is the movie series pirates of the Caribbean, where two ships fight, one from ohio the other from michigan, the fireworks are meant to symbolize cannon fire. Ohio obviously wins purely because of their superiority, then a skull and crossed bones is shown, as a symbol of the series
The person that was “eaten” by the TRex was a Michigan player. It doesn’t matter who OSU is playing that day, every single TBDBITL performance includes a reference to “That team up north”
The chant you heard at the beginning of the performance came from the band itself. What the band is saying is: "Pick up your feet, turn your corners square, and DRIVE! DRIVE! DRIVE! The Ohio State University Marching Band also has the distinction of being the largest all brass and percussion band in the world (at the time of this comment, The OSUMB has held that distinction for 88 years with the decision to go all brass and percussion in 1934).
I'm from Ohio and it's awesome to see your reaction. We take pride in our football team and our "Best Dam Band In The Land". Michigan is our rivals we don't like Michigan lol.
This was a great idea !!!! Something I had never seen before, Thank you so much !!! I did not understand what they were doing because it was so new to me, I had seen marching bands, but only a glimpse or two through the years. But after reading the comments, now I understand and have to watch more and more!!!! Wow, how good are these kids, absolutely Amazing to do this precision while playing an instrument !!!
Harry Potter playing Quidditch on a broom stick. The bird was Hedwig his white owl. The "pictures" that they form are related to the movie songs that they play. The pirate ships used Pirates of Caribbean music. Dinosaur: Jurassic Park.

The guy with the stick is the Drum Major and the stick is called a baton. OSU is a corps band as opposed the the Aggie military band. Corps bands are very artistic & expressive. You're 100% correct - you can't compare corps bands to militant bands ( like comparing apples to oranges). The theme of this show is blockbuster movies - Superman, Harry Potter, Jurassic Park, Pirates of the Caribbean. You're right - the OSU ship sunk their opponent (Michigan). Buckeye is a nut - the end symbol was from Pirates of the Caribbean. Really enjoy your reactions to our beloved bands. I am an Aggie fan & also an OSU fan. I was in high school band - military style. My boys were in a corps style high school band. Corps style is MUCH more involved and have prop crews (the ones with the banners)
One thing I'm not seeing mentioned here is that the band also does a new show almost every single week. They even travel for some away games, which can be over 12 hours away by bus. I grew up watching Ohio State football and my mom had CDs of the marching band she'd play sometimes in the car. We absolutely never leave the stands during the half time show because it's as good as the games.
It was hard to hear, but at the beginning, an announcer said they were featuring movie themes. I played in a high school marching band and we had movement graphs to memorize and music to learn and it was crazy hard.
The "commander" is called drum major & a band this size usually has 3. The band members that don't play instruments, flag bearers & such, are generally called the color guard. These halftime performances take months to prepare. Collegiate marching band members are 99% from high school student marching bands. Just found your channel. Enjoyed very much.. Your English is excellent. I am from Ohio and I love the Ohio State Band. Thanks for showing it. Looking forward to more videos. Happy Holidays.
The guy in the red uniform or as you said " the commander" is the Drum Major. Drum Major have to compete for that position and it is a very coveted roll. They are amazing to watch but it's hard to see this far away. Ohio's Drum Major entrance is always epic!
If you really like watching marching band, I’d HIGHLY suggest reacting to drum corp international videos....like professional marching band. I’d recommend watching bluecoats 2016
DCI will definitely bend your brain about just how much storytelling you can do with a marching band; it's pretty amazing. If you want to see top tier marching band, DCI is a must watch. I'll second the Spartacus recommendation - the Bluecoats' Down Side Up is also fantastic, but it's a bit more... I dunno, avant garde? I think Spartacus is probably better for your first DCI show, unless you want some weirdness right out of the gate.
@@hannahchoi7831 yeah probably true..both are fantastic shows. I personally prefer the weirdness of some of the newer dci, but for a first look, Spartacus would be awesome.
It's a tribute to Hollywood blockbuster movies. The last was a skull and crossbones for Pirates of the Caribbean movies. Michigan is Ohio States biggest rival.
Ohio State fields 192 members and are all brass and percussion. When they were first coming onto the field it was the band all chanting at the direction of the drum major in unison before starting "Pick up your feet! Turn your corners square! and drive! drive! drive"
I am SO GLAD I found this part of youtube! I have so much knowledge to share!! (My apologies in advance for the essay, I am incredibly passionate about marching band.) I was really happy to hear you say that this show is different than the Texas A&M show because it is. They're different routines and serve different functions. The Texas A&M show is considered a "pregame" show, which is played right before kickoff at an American College Football game. Pregame shows tend not to change from year to year, as they're tradition. The Ohio State show is their halftime show, which is played between 2nd and 3rd quarter in a football game. These tend to be more artistic and will change each year or, in some cases, more frequently (I know a couple of bands that did two shows each semester). I also wanted to share that a lot of these shows will have themes. In this case, the theme was John Williams. John Williams is an icon among American composers. He wrote the scores to blockbuster hits such as Superman, Lord of the Rings, Harry Potter, Jurassic Park, and Pirates of the Caribbean, (and much more, these were just the ones in the marching band show.) In this particular show, you see visual representations from all of the movies listed above (the "Superman" S and telephone booth, the "Lord of the Rings" One Ring and Eye of Sauron, the "Harry Potter" initials/logo with the Snitch [winged bird], and wizard on a broom, the dinosaur from "Jurassic Park," and from "Pirates in the Caribbean": the pirate ships/canons and the skull & crossbones.) You also noticed the "M" in the field! As playful banter, sometimes bands will trash talk the opposing team. In this case, the Ohio State ship sunk the ship belonging to the University of Michigan. Lastly, I want to thank you for letting me share my knowledge with you and welcome you to reach out if you ever want to go down the rabbit hole that is matching band. Oh, and marching bands can sometimes have hundreds of members. The current largest: 760.
Wow 760 members is very hard to handle i guess.... and absolutely no problem, you can always share your knowledge. I am glad to hear that! Greetings and thank you! :)
Joanie Velles Just a note. The theme was not John Williams, it was "Hollywood Blockbusters". The announcer says it at 1:07, though it's kind of hard to hear. John Williams did score Superman, Harry Potter, and Jurassic Park, but he didn't do Lord of the Rings or Pirates of the Caribbean.
Since you have the sound down low on the video, you didn't hear the announcer say they were doing a tribute to Hollywood Blockbusters (try looking at it again and listen to the music for each figure ... each song corresponds with a Blockbuster film). The music is the key. the first was Superman, the second was Lord of the Rings, the third was Harry Potter, the fourth was Jurassic Park, and the last was Pirates of the Caribbean, .
The music they play usually corresponds with the shapes they make on the field. Jurasasic Park theme for the dinosaur, Superman straightens building to Superman theme.
You havent seen anything until see them do the horse and run across the field! But yeah, they announce theme of each performance at beginning of halftime
The show was about previous movies, like superman, harry potter, jurassic park and pirates of the caribbean. It was good show, but Texas A&M has very complex precision marches and like their style of Marching - much more...
I can't knock University of Texas or Texas A&M (my paternal grandmother was from Texas and I have family who went to both schools), but OSU's marching band is hands down the best. No other school has an all-brass marching band. No other school has the moniker, The Best Damn Band In The Land.
In the 1960's, up to present day, almost every High School and College/University in the U.S. had/has a marching band that plays their instruments while doing intricate marching formations during football game halftime shows or while marching in parades. These bands usually have 100-200 members, and they usually practice daily, all through the year, sometimes even during summer break. It really requires dedication and physical stamina. Most schools are as proud of their marching band as they are of their athletic teams!
Yes, they do have competitions! The football games and parades (like the Macy' Thanksgiving Day Parade, and the Tournament of Roses Parade (held the morning of the Rose Bowl College football game on New Years Day) are televised nationally, and are the bands' opportunity to show off their skill to the world! Also, at the really big parades the bands are judged and the best ones receive large trophies, which are proudly displayed along with any other trophies that school teams have won over the years. I went to Bixby High School (a very small town near Tulsa, Oklahoma) which like every other small town in the 1970's had a full marching band) and our band was the first H.S. marching band west of the Mississippi River to play at Disney World in Orlando, Florida) It was a big honor for our little school. The person that is all dressed up and leads the band is called the Drum Major. Sometimes the teacher does that but usually it is one of the senior band members. Also, during the football games the band sits together in the stands and plays music during the game to encourage their team! When their team makes a touchdown they stand and play the school's Fight Song!
226 playing members (192 March on the field at one time and 33 alternates.) Plus two drum majors. (One is an assistant drum major.) Alternates can challenge one of the 192 marching members to be able to march the next show.
Just found your vid/reaction. Serious Buckeye fan here! The guy in front in the costume I think you called it is the drum major and the audition for that is crazy!!! Like pro football cheerleaders auditions. OSU and Michigan are rivals and they use the "M" for various things usually within each week's halftime show. This show was movie blockbusters. The symbol after Superman, I don't have a clue on so can't help you there. Others may have already told you about these but I haven't read the comments so don't know. The one you thought was a witch and then the letters before it were Harry Potter and the bird that was flying around is somehow part of that. The pirate ships was from pirates of the caribbean and the OSU ship beat the Michigan one. The shows they do every week are insane!! There's so much practice that go into them, like about 25 hours each week on top of classes and homework. "Buckeyes" is the state symbol and it's also a peanut butter and chocolate candy made to look like a buckeye. The OSU band is called The Best Damn Band In The Land (TBDBITL) and the largest brass and percussion band in colleges. There's roughly 150 band members. You should really check out more of their videos, you'll love them
For your information. An Ohio buckeye or American buckeye is a particular tree native to the Midwestern US, all the way to the Great Plains of the US, and as far south as Nashville TN area.
They were doing movies! They played the theme songs from Superman, Lord of the Rings, Harry Potter ( not a witch)....and then Pirated of the Caribbean!
Marching band starts in high school, we practice before school even starts. My school we learn the music first before marching. We are all given colored chips with our number on it. The number of how many are in the actual marching band depends on how many students sign up for band. Marching band only happens in the fall, we do half time shows, and also play during the game(football only!). If you want to be blown away, find Spring High School marching band 1993.
That was super man coming out of a phone booth where he changed clothes and pushed up a toppling building. The flag is the emblem on his cape. They actually did that really well.
The performance was a tribute to famous American movie franchises. They performed their soundtracks and had formations that describe what the films where about. I guess they must really be big only in the US
I was a member of a division 1 college marching band and we had about 300 members. Something to remember is we play on specialized instruments that are designed to be much louder and brighter sounding than one we'd play in a concert style band
@@marvinreacts2227 the school pays. We had a pretty good budget because the athletic department kicks in revinue from ticket sales. Division 1 college football is easily multi-million dollar business
Superman is in the phone booth and suddenly the building leaning, Superman rush out and push building to straight up. Second, Harry potter’s riding the broom chasing the bird. This particular marching band is shown off All from Hollywood movies. At the beginning, the host announced.
The person in the big high hat is called the drum major, this was a half time show at the beginning before the game the band makes a ramp interance and that when they will do script OHIO, a Buckeye is nut from a tree, it is dark brown with a tan spot that makes it look like the eye of a male deer also called a buck, a Buckeye is also called a horse chestnut. A candy made to look like a Buckeye is very popular in Ohio, it's a ball of peanut butter cream dip in chocolate leaving just enough of the peanut butter showing to make it look like a Buckeye. A very tasty a sweet candy. I am proud to say that I went to high school a graduated with Shelly Graf who. was the first female Drum major in the history of Ohio State. She a very sweet and wonderful person.
Each year the band directors choose a theme - at the beginning of the halftime show the announcer said they'd be performing some of the greatest Hollywood films. Superman (including the phone booth), the Eye of Sauron from The Lord of the Rings, Harry Potter riding his broomstick in a game of quidditch (and catching the thing...what is it called?), the T-Rex from Jurassic Park, a ship battle from Pirates of the Caribbean...I think that was all of them? But every band's show is different every year (typically). Each year they start from scratch. So glad you appreciate the hard work that goes into these performances! 😊
This band does a completely new performance EVERY home game. It’s amazing, this entire thing was learned and mastered in the course of two weeks, then forget it all and start on the next one.
Okay dude, if you notice, they played movie theme songs and made their formations to correspond with the songs. The last one was pirates of the carribean and they made two ships, one with a Michigan flag and one with an Ohio State flag. The formation at the end was not a buckeye, but a skull and crossbones. Michigan and OSU are huge rivals, so they pulled out all the stops for this halftime show. To be honest, the OSU marching band always impresses me, so...
Enjoyed your video. As you may have found, bands are as much of the college football tradition as the teams. Like some others have already mentioned, to see more of the tradition of the Ohio State Marching Band, watch them perform their pre-game show and the 'Script Ohio'. The band has been performing this since 1936. Here is a link to one of them: th-cam.com/video/WdWolVsKlAI/w-d-xo.html It shows much more or the close up precision, and the 'Script Ohio' is a must see. Also, I believe you asked how many members are in the band. There are 228 musicians, of which 192 perform the "pre-game" show. I would enjoy watching you react to this pre-game show, it is quite spectacular! Hope you enjoy.
Marvin, I studied music in college and taught marching band in a high school. You control your sound by how you use your brass instruments. You give your more complicated movements (and dances) to the clarinets and flutes because they do not contribute as much to volume.
It's Hollywood films theme. You have to listen to the music which will give you a hint. "Superman" (Clark Kent changing in the phone booth onto Superman to save the falling skyscraper), "GOT (Game of Thrones)", "Harry Potter" and his owl Hedwig, "Pirates of the Caribbean", "Lord of the Rings", "Jurassic Park" The "M" and "O" are the two teams playing that day for the "Pirates of the Caribbean" performance.
This is a really long post, but I get excited talking about my days in marching band, and hopefully offering some decent information. I was in middle school and high school marching band, and the formations take a lot of practice, but once you get it, and you do have to get it down quickly, it's easy for you. It becomes part of your memory and you know automatically during what part of the music when you need to be on the thirty yard line, or anywhere else on the field. During football season, we had 3-4 hours of practice after school, and during the summer we had what's known as "band camp". Some schools actually travel out of their city to train at a college, under college band members and instructors for weeks. We stayed within our city, and practiced during the summer for about six weeks, from around 7am to 11am (a couple of short breaks in between), go home to rest, return at 3pm and practice until 6pm to 7pm. If it was extremely hot, (summer in Alabama is always hot!) we'd skip marching practice and work on the music inside the school's band room, and try to get in some late nighttime practice on the field, once it cooled off. Sometimes we'd start at 7pm and stay until 10pm. There were times when we'd practice marching in light rain, but without instruments because water is terrible for them. We'd count or hum to keep the beat. During my four years in high school, our band started off with a little over two-hundred members, and this was a city school. In comparison to one of our rivals, a county school, we were a little small as they had about 250 at one time, but the larger the band, the harder it is to maneuver intricate designs and move them down the field. Also, though larger, they didn't sound as large as they were, so knowing how to get a big sound that's also great, is what you want. County schools can be quite large because of rural area kids being combined as one large school, or they can be quite small because the rural area is so far away from other schools, that a small school makes a small band. Things have changed over the years, but when I was in school, our band also had majorettes (girls twirling small batons), flag bearers/twirlers and rifle twirlers. The rifles were made of wood. These are known as "The Color Guard". The guard sometimes wore costumes to fit the theme of the song. It was quite impressive to see them all marching with the band while twirling, and tossing those items into the air and catching them in sync. We were a really good band, if I do say so, and had been asked to perform in places like the New Orleans Saints' game during Mardi Gras, while I was there. That was a long time ago, but I remember marching in the parade during Mardi Gras, thinking it would never end, but also being so happy and proud to be there. We were one of a few bands who wore white shoes, as many others wore black shoes or boots. White shoes show how well everyone's feet line up during a high stepping march, and how well you're in sync with each other. Black shoes tend to hide that, and since we wanted to prove that we could do what was expected, we always had to wear white. It was good to find a comfortable pair, and you'd better buy at least two pair at once because they wear out, and trying to find another comfortable pair at the last minute could be tough. I don't miss those hot uniforms in summer, but they weren't too horrible in winter. We still have to wear layers of clothing underneath because we weren't allowed to wear coats and cover the uniforms. I don't know if they still have them, but I remember competitions for drum majors to battle it out with their amazing salutes and directing skills. Band competitions can take a band all over the country and even out of it. It's amazing! I played clarinet and was always envious of how great the trumpets looked during the "snap"....quickly bringing the instrument up to your mouth. Some also twirl their trumpets. I also played cymbals. I had no idea they'd be so heavy or so loud when the drummer would hit them as I held them inches away from my face. LOL! Also, if you ever see a gap between two members, and wonder why it's there, it's because a member isn't there (probably out sick) and they keep the formation as if they're marching with them. This keeps them from having to change the lineup, and since you're already used to marching in a specific setup, it could throw everyone off to fill the gap.
The witch thing was Harry Potter flying in a Quidditch match. That was the Harry Potter theme from one of the early movies. The flying thing was the Golden Snitch.
Osumbfn... I've got the Ohio State University Marchin Band.... but what's the "fn"? Great choreography!!
Ah-mazing job arranging these!!! Thank you for all of your hard work!!
Having marched in a 330 piece band in hs, I can attest to the amount of work a marching band puts into learning not only the music but the sets. In my experience, the band actually puts in significantly more practice than the football team, both during the summer and each week during marching season.
WOW, Amazing, thank you for making this :O!
I bow to you and your team members who literally orchestrated this amazing show. Sir.
Superman, Lord of the Rings, Harry Potter, Jurassic Park, Pirates of the Caribbean they drew things from those movies while playing the music from them.
They could have told him at least that much ahead of time. It would help the reactions I think.

This is the world's largest brass band (only brass horns and drums), with 192 members marching the shows and 36 alternates. They practice 30 hours/week, while maintaining a full academic schedule.

Clark Kent would change into Superman in a phone booth. Many younger people have never seen one.

The guy in front is called a Drum Major.
Thank you! 👍
Several times, he was actually referring to a member of the color guard, not the drum major

Ohio St and Texas AM are different styles. Both are the best at what they do.
Have you seen texas a&m band before?

This show is about Hollywood blockbusters. You know, like Jurassic Park.
192, not 195.
Script Ohio is what they are known for. Yes....they enter the field from one end, led by the drum major. The best damn band in the land.
The script writing of OHIO at the beginning of the game is a video that Marvin should review. It has been 30 years since I attended a Buckeye game and remembering the script writing of Ohio still gives me chills. Oh yeah, the football team is pretty good too.
Absolutely review the Script Ohio... thats what the band is famous for!
The OSU band is really loud because it is all brass and percussion. No soft-spoken woodwinds. 200 bandmen fill up the stadium which seat 103,000. By contrast the TA&M band marches roughly 360 people but they include woodwinds.
I've never seen a reaction to this performance where the reactor had never seen a movie 😆
Apparently there are no movies in Germany.?
its also a University marching band so basically every 4 years there is a complete change over of members. To keep a high level like this every year is impressive feat as well. The football teams whose games they play at would die for that level of consistency
For the record, the football team that they DO play for DOES have that level of consistency! Go Bucks!

Aaah, got it! Thank you! ☺️
The person that was “eaten” by the TRex was a Michigan player. It doesn’t matter who OSU is playing that day, every single TBDBITL performance includes a reference to “That team up north”
The figures you don't know what they are, is the one true ring and the Eye of Sauron from the Lord of the Rings.
It wasn't a bird, it was the Golden Snitch.
The designs that the musicians are making on the field go with the music they're playing.
I'd like to hear the band without the play by play!

The stick. How appropriate for baton in German.
Please explain to this guy what is an Aggie. Several of my family members graduated from A&M.
Uh.. a buckeye is a poisonous nut from our state tree of the same name. 😂

(My apologies in advance for the essay, I am incredibly passionate about marching band.)
I was really happy to hear you say that this show is different than the Texas A&M show because it is.
He wrote the scores to blockbuster hits such as Superman, Lord of the Rings, Harry Potter, Jurassic Park, and Pirates of the Caribbean, (and much more, these were just the ones in the marching band show.) In this particular show, you see visual representations from all of the movies listed above (the "Superman" S and telephone booth, the "Lord of the Rings" One Ring and Eye of Sauron, the "Harry Potter" initials/logo with the Snitch [winged bird], and wizard on a broom, the dinosaur from "Jurassic Park," and from "Pirates in the Caribbean": the pirate ships/canons and the skull & crossbones.)
You also noticed the "M" in the field!
Joanie Velles
Just a note.
Ohio is historically known as the "Buckeye State" after its Ohio buckeye trees, and Ohioans are also known as "Buckeyes"
It’s not a stick. It’s a baton.
May be stick in German.
The music they play usually corresponds with the shapes they make on the field. Jurasasic Park theme for the dinosaur, Superman straightens building to Superman theme.
"Dotting the I" Ohio tuba player wears a GoPro while marching. Amazing!
A buckeye is like a nut from a tree. You carry it in your pocket for luck.
You havent seen anything until see them do the horse and run across the field!
But yeah, they announce theme of each performance at beginning of halftime
"the guy in the costume" is the drum major, tossing his baton
It's a mace, not a baton
A Buckeye is a small brown nut with a tan eye in the middle. Carrying one is supposed to bring good luck.
True and a Buck is a Deer and it does look like a deers eye
The theme was Hollywood Blockbusters. The band formations are Superman, Harry Potter, Jurassic Park, and Pirates of the Caribbean.
The one you didn’t know was lord of the rings
The show was about previous movies, like superman, harry potter, jurassic park and pirates of the caribbean. It was good show, but Texas A&M has very complex precision marches and like their style of Marching - much more...
TBDBITL = The Best Damn Band In The Land = OSU Marching band!!! Script Ohio is a must! The ONLY one in college football
Wow!!! 😍 Are there contests of marching bands or is this just for entertainment purposes?
(One is an assistant drum major.)
Alternates can challenge one of the 192 marching members to be able to march the next show.
You should really check out more of their videos, you'll love them
The baton twirling drum major started in the early '70s at Ohio State.
The theme was Hollywood Blockbusters. The two ships and skull and crossbones represented the Pirates of the Caribbean.
For your information. An Ohio buckeye or American buckeye is a particular tree native to the Midwestern US, all the way to the Great Plains of the US, and as far south as Nashville TN area.
Good video! They were saluting Hollywood films..the one on a broomstick was Harry Potter
They were doing movies! They played the theme songs from Superman, Lord of the Rings, Harry Potter ( not a witch)....and then Pirated of the Caribbean!
he said chant from the crowd in the beginning that is my favorite chant from the band
They were all songs from movies and the shapes were symbols from that movie ie Lord of the Rings, Harry Potter, Pirates of the Caribbean
Ahh, now I see it :), Thank you!
And the Dinosaur eating a Michigan player is Jurassic Park
😳💯 Congrats for making it into the band! But who is paying for them? I guess they are not cheap😅
@@marvinreacts2227 the school pays. We had a pretty good budget because the athletic department kicks in revinue from ticket sales. Division 1 college football is easily multi-million dollar business
These members usually are very active in the drum and bugle corps. Watch the cadets 2011 angels and demons show
Thanks for posting some great videos.
No problem🙈
The man in the "costume" in the middle of the field - drum major & his 'stick' is a baton!
Theme was movie songs and the iconic images from the associated movie.
It's a pleasure for me!
Thanks for that information 💯
This band does a completely new performance EVERY home game. It’s amazing, this entire thing was learned and mastered in the course of two weeks, then forget it all and start on the next one.
@@flyflorida2001 Wow, seriously?! I was in the marching band in high school and it was hard enough learning and perfecting our ANNUAL show 🤣😅👍🏻
Ok you didn't get lord of the ring but harry potter catching the snitch come on man! That was amazing!
the Toledo War in which Michigan and Ohio 1835 nearly went to war over a territorial dispute, now a football war and great fun!
Yes. The pre-game stadium entrance is the crowd pleaser. You're showing the halftime show. That's different and changes all the time.
TBDBITL
The broom rider was Harry Potter
Wow that's a very great insight and I can really feel that passion that you put into it.
Thank you! 👍😊

Thank you so much for the kind words, and I'm glad that I offered some insight. :)
Yes, the Ohio State Marching Band is known consistently as a ‘Superior’ band...they are that good!
It was “Harry Potter” on the broom and movie score. And “Jurassic Park” music and T Rex. And the ships and music are from “Pirates of the Caribbean”
The witch thing was Harry Potter flying in a Quidditch match. That was the Harry Potter theme from one of the early movies. The flying thing was the Golden Snitch.
