The Super Duty 455 engine was a special heart for a rare bird, and this car is a great example of one of the last great first generation Muscle Cars from Pontiac. My dad had a 71-TA white with the blue stripe 455-SD,4speed.I believe this is the best American muscle car ever built, the 70-73. Hands down.
My 1970 350 Firebird never left me stranded. When you accelerated, the car would sink lower to the ground the faster you went. Great car design.
70-73 2nd Gen Firebirds are one of my fav muscle cars of all time. I've been a PONTIAC MANIAC for over 40yrs :-)
I love lots of different old cars, and I love th 67 & 68 Firebirds a lot too, but yeah 70-73 are so beautiful. I love the Formulas too with the scoops from then as well. I don't like any Trans Am after 73 until the late 90's WS6. I have seen a lot of Formula 400's and even one that said Formula 455 but I haven't learned if that's factory or not? I like that I've seen some with the chin spoiler from the TA's and some without and both look great. Haven't seen pictures of a Formula yet with the chin spoiler and the rear tire flares from the TA's but they are all gorgeous. I just can't believe that they ruined such a beautiful look with the 74 style. Barf lol. I don't really like the Bandit style front ends but the 80-81 front ends have grown on me a little. Saw a dark blue 80 Trans Am with bird that looks kind of cool. One that is like a brown color that I just call Aztec gold because that's what it makes me think of lol, it's pretty cool lookin too, but naw. Those early 70's are incredible works of are. I love the Camaros from the same time, but they aren't my favorite. 69 Camaro has become my favorite with the 67 next and then 68 and then early 70's. Don't much care for the 69 Firebird or TA. Seen a couple that looked really good, but not many.
Love the 70-73 body style Gen 2 Firebirds! I remember as a child seeing Formula Firebirds and Trans Ams on the streets in my fathers car and was always amazed with delight, same goes for other muscle cars and European sports GT cars of the era.
Pontiac truly one of the pioneers on muscle cars history ❤️🙌🏼👍🏼👏🏼they truly didn’t let I go until the very end of the era ...Pontiac are up there truly beautiful muscle car history and legacy
Pontiac gave us the fabulous GTO in 1964 and the amazing SD 455 Firebird til 1974!!

There are very few muscle cars I would consider that have absolutely perfect styling. This is one...the other is the 68 Vette. Perfection. Just outstanding looking cars.

the SUPER DUTYS were the best performers for low compression & low/no lead gas engines of the '70s & 80's. they sold for a very high premium from wrecked cars in the junk yards. awesome engine to modify.
Balanced and blue printed my 1971 455 HO in 1979 for an amazing $1949.58. That included muscling up the turbo 400 trans that came back with a note that said “you can’t break this”. Miss that car a lot. Now have a 2010 Camaro SS 6-speed. Very fun to drive as the 158,789 miles would tell you.

Another highly informative video by V8TV. A lot of really good inside facts. And when Kevin opens his mouth, he sounds like a freaking college professor. And Herb Adams?? You’re doing some fine digging guys. Had many of his suspension pieces on my ’70 base ‘Bird way back in the day. The body still remains one of the most beautiful Bill Mitchell ever let out of his studios (GM Styling Staff). That's why I often wonder, if still around today and looking at his 2nd Gen Firebird ‘what would Bill Mitchell do?’

It was said this year was the best handling of all the pontiacs ever made to that date. I just looked online and there's an all original 1973 SD-455 Trans Am with manual transmission for sale and they are asking 234K!! for it... If I had money to burn I would prob buy it.
The guy I know that had one stuffed it away in his barn. A few years later the barn roof caved in on it. Ouch!

I had a brand new 73 TA in college. Downside: the front spoiler was too low and scraped on curbs, driveways, etc. Also the suspension was rock hard and my windshield cracked just going over some RR tracks at careful speed one time.

Probably my favorite Pontiac ever made other than MAYBE a 62 Catalina 421 SD or a 69 GTO Ram Air IV(not a Judge). The 455SD is a much better street engine than a 421SD or 400 Ram Air IV...which were both pretty tempremental...particulary the 421SD
I had the 1969 GTO Ram Air IV, non judge in 1970. Great Car but the worst drum brakes ever!

I ordered a 1973 Trans Am new. I wanted the Super Duty engine but at 19 years old and my Dad paying for it, he had the last say, which was "no way". It was a nice looking car inside and out but that's about it. It was a poorly made rattle trap with a severely choked down engine. American cars are much better built now.
My father ordered the SD option for his ‘74 TA but, it never happened. 🤦♂️

+Ed Cain Those were actually 455 H.O. 's , the only engine available in the Trans Am. They were rated at 335 for the '71 and 300 for the '72....still put down high 13's in the 1/4 mile.The 370 HP engine was the '69/'70 Ram Air IV 400...if you broke off the retaining tab on the carburetor which prevented the secondaries from opening fully so as to limit the HP to less than the GTO Ram Air IV
Correct. The LS1 Ram Air Super Duty 400 ci was rated at 370 hp, same as RAIV, but it never made planned production for 1971. Source: The Definitive Firebird & Trans Am Guide 1970 1/2-1981 by Rocky Rotella.

My buddy Jim bachor brought a 74 SD 455 Trans Am red with white interior force-feed home I had a fastest car he ever owned by far I had a 70 and a half Z28 4 speed 327 punched out 30 / Fountain Blue printed solid lifter cam work to the gills some scars for identical eat fast we couldn't beat each other by far the fastest car I ever owned and I owned car lots

73-74 sd455 t/a was really the ONLY muscle car left after 71. For 72 the Mopar hemi was gone and all American v8 engines turned into low compression boat anchors

@@fogtown3027 The SD 455 cars would run with the 1970 and earlier hi comp cars with no issue. The SD 455 cars were bad ass.

I wonder what you could get out of that motor by putting a bigger cam, higher compression pistons, 3" exhaust, and bigger carb or maybe fuel injection, wake that baby up.
Love all Trans Am cars, but never liked that firebird decal.
ramp up the compression ratio to 10 to 1,and this will be ace.
I agree Al. It was killer even with the lo-comp, and EGR. Make it 11 to 1, an 041 cam, and dump the EGR, and it would've competed with some of Detroits best of any time.
My balanced and blue printed 455 HO HAD 10.75/1 compression. After blowing the original rear end my Dad found a replacement out of an old Buick so went from a .307 to .273. And yes you could bounce the speed-o off the max at 160. So yes the good old days were fun.
I wanna see more of these on the road instead of coddled in some guy's garage.

Imagine with slightly shaved heads and the Ram Air IV cam...
Happy to say I don't have to imagine, I have one and have had the heads decked and have a Nunzi Ram Air IV cam in it as well. Plus, rejetted the carburetor, added a 2200 stall speed and shift kit. Compression comes in a 8.75 to 1 and it has 2 shaker's, one open and one closed. Just as Pontiac engineer's envisioned. Good post from you for the recognition of these simple upgrades to add more power.
Where do you find the production numbers (252 SD in 73). I always wanted to know how my GTOs were equipped with 421s and 428s
Go online at a GTO site. There's a couple of them. Also build a library of books. Try to buy old original ones. See what your local library carries and ask if they wanna sell their supply. Like a original edition book about Hurst Olds with the option codes and prices. It had a chapter about Hurst Grand Prix in there too. Priceless. Some new ones are kissing ### and don't want to encourage speed displays. (I'm not kidding here on that) Then you can be a brainiac and when some know nothing pops off with a dumb statement you got the knowledge and proof to back up your reply. Just be fearful of a house fire that destroys your boxes and boxes, volumes after volumes of material that you've collected which I can attest to is heartbreaking. Have fun.

No 421 or 428 engines were sold but there was a story I read many years ago that car magazines were sent so called "ringers" for road tests.
I know the first GTO for the road test was equipped with a 421, Dick Wagner confessed that several years after the fact. But when people say there were 50 of these and 200 of those they have to be getting that info from somewhere what and where is that info/list
so this would have better performance than the 77 from Smokey & The Bandit?

For 1970, you had the Chevelle SS 454 LS6 rated at 450HP Gross,not net. In the Camaro Z-28 you got the 360HP LT1 350 or the Camaro SS with the 350HP 396 which was actually a 402 C.I. In the Trans Am you got either the 335HP Ram Air III or 345HP Ram Air IV, which could be increased to 370HP by breaking off a retaining Tab on the carb which prevented the secondaries from opening fully. The Ram Air IV's were barely streetable. I had one and it did not like low speed driving it was happy running at 4000RPM or higher and I only got just barely 8 MPG.All these are gross HP ratings meaning no belt driven accessories attached to the engine and measured at the flywheel.The Pontiac GTO came with the Ram Air III or IV 400 or the 455 H.O. which was severely underrated by Pontiac at only 366 HP and 500 ft/lbs torque. On the Buick/Oldsmobile side you got the 455 powered Buick GSX and the Olds 442 and like Pontiac, rated at 366HP but over 500 ft/lbs torque. All the 455 engines(and engines in general) were underrated for insurance purposes by the manufacturers. This was also the year GM lifted the 400 C.I. Limit on full size cars hence the 454/455 engines.For 1970 the LS6 Chevelle SS was king.

I had a 79 with a 6.6.olds. motor. California emissions.. Garbage in comparison to the 455.selah
Pontiac....the only thing GM ever did right. 70-81 Firebirds outstanding. 70-73 sexiest Firebirds. Sad the GM refused to save Pontiac. By the way, born and raised Ford guy here.
I agree Jim about the 70-73 being the nicest T/A design, altho there were some other decent FBs over the years. I'm trying to get used to the new WS-6 4th gens, but can't get past the on board 'puter, even tho I'm sure the millennials won't understand, seeing they never experienced the days of these early cars.
As for the Fords, I have lots of respect for the Clevelands, Boss 429s, Thunderbolts, ect. :)

The commentator is confusing the SD455 with the Ram Air V when he says the pushrods enter the intake ports and are contained in sleeves. Two different engines. The Ram Air V has "Tunnel Port" heads with the pushrods in the intake port, but the SD455 does not.
It turns out I am wrong. The SD 455 does have pushrods entering the intake port, contained in sleeves. Sorry Pontiac guys!

Went to school with a kid that worked and saved his money and bought one in 1980. It was a California special SD 455 4 Speed Pearl White with Blue bird and dark blue interior!! It would go from gas station to gas station faster than anything I'd ever seen !!LOL

bill thompson They would have had to modify those to meet EPA regs too and you just would have had less cubes and at least in the case of the 421 a more expensive engine to produce as the SD 421 had better internal parts.

Buick still selling well, Pontiac was struggling at the time. It was all business. You don't take a bailout and keep the dogs so Pontiac, Saturn and Hummer (civilian) were out.
