  • Pontiac for the 1982 model year had planned to give performance superiority to its light and super aerodynamic all-new 1982 Trans Am with its Turbo 301 cubic-inch (4.9 liter) V8. Unfortunately it wasn't meant to be, here's the real story of how the 1982 Trans Am almost became a performance legend and the lowdown of what this Turbo 301 V8 option could have meant for the third generation Trans Am of the 1980s decade.

Has there ever been a time when General Motors' management did NOT suck?!? They killed so many vehicles that had potential.

Seems like Pontiac was the only GM brand making innovative moves. So dumb of them to restrict their potential only because they wanted the corvette name to live on. This isn't the only example of GM's stubbornness. Look up the Pontiac Banshee 1.

Had Pontiac gotten to continue development of the turbo 301 it could have been world class performance.

I was working at GM in the 70s and early 80s. A turbo Camaro was also planned for 82 but squashed at the last minute. They even had the parts books printed and sent to the dealers with drawings and part numbers. I wish I had one of those books now.

Would be so cool to see Pontiac back up and running as a independent auto manufacturer.

Thanking you for making this. I have always been bitter with GM over what they did to the Trans Am.

I had a 1990 305 Firebird,I loved that old girl,I remember watching "Knight Rider" in Britain in the mid '80's as a child and not knowing what car it was as Pontiacs were not available in the U.K.,but thinking it was the coolest, sleekest, most amazing car I'd ever seen, the icing on the cake was the "pop-up" headlights.

I’ve been fortunate enough to have several F Body cars in my life: 79 Z28 former CHP car, 79 TA with 403, 83 TA with CFI, 84 TA with HO, 87 IROC with 5.7. Each car was faster than the one before it but none were fast by today’s standards. They were never raced and cared for well but despite that, they were always in need of some mechanical or electronic repair. I can’t say they were built well but I loved them all nonetheless. They were sporty, eye catching beauties that made a young man feel like the king of the road. If I could have only one of them back it would be the 79 TA (SE model). I would restore it cosmetically keeping the stock look, pull the 403 and put in a late model GM V8 probably from a Corvette (LS3 or LT1), matching 6 Speed auto tranny, and relive some old car memories with a modern twist. If only my bank account could keep up with my imagination...

Thanks for posting this video. Growing up, my father was friends with the general manager of the local multi-line GM dealership here in Southern California. I was 12 years old when the '82 F-cars hit the dealers. Calvin showed my dad a white 1982 Turbo T/A parked in the body shop away from the rest of the new inventory. The story was that it was a test mule for an option that got cut before production. We took it for a test drive. It was quick. He said Mom would love it. Dad compared it to the 383 Charger and 390 Fairlane they had owned in the 60's. After that I had to sit quietly on the floor in a sales cubicle for a couple of hours as three men made a ton of calls to GM to get the car released for sale. In the end, it came down to the fact that the engine was never California emissions certified for sale since it was cut before full production. Not to be.

In 1983, the new 5speed manual with 3.73 gears and the functional hood scoop and the dual resonator exhaust was a vast improvement over 1982, I miss that car!

I have a custom 1986 Trans Am in great condition and I love that thing. I get so many looks and compliments on it. Surprisingly, many people don't even know what kind of car it is or that it is even an old car.
