In my 20’s I developed Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome. It’s a hormone condition that causes you to gain weight and makes it hard to lose it. I’m six feet tall and busty, suddenly I found myself in foreign territory shopping in a well known plus size store. One of the sales ladies watched me trying on baggy outfit after baggy outfit. She approached me and gently told me I was choosing things that were way too big. She also pointed out that I had an hourglass figure and needed to show it off not hide it. Best advice I ever got. Wearing clothes that fit well are key to looking good in whatever you’re wearing. Thanks for a great video with tons of excellent advice!

I find it nearly impossible NOT to wear bigger clothes, because a size down reveals a spare tire & a pot belly. And to me, showing rolls and/or fat belly, looks SO MUCH WORSE, TACKY, LOW-CLASS, than wearing the next size up that "flows" over those bumps. It's very rare to find flattering clothes that make me look my "smallest", and do not reveal bulges.
      I'd wear a tent before I wear a lump-exposeing item.
      Any REALISTIC IDEAS?

Hi Serena, new viewer, enjoyed it! I'm almost 80 (can hardly believe it!) and recently cut my long hair to a bob. Wish I'd done it much earlier! On the clothes I like, they're mostly on the "not recommended" list. I live in central Florida. It gets hot. There are basically two seasons: a short winter and a very long summer.
I find jeans too warm except in the very short winter and prefer lighter fabrics. I love sweaters and hardly ever get to wear them. I like sandals with a 1" heel when I go out, but flat shoes the rest of the time. I love boots - used to live up north - but I'd feel silly wearing boots when it's 90.
Probably my worst fashion "sin" - LOL - is capris. I LOVE capris. Cooler than long pants on a hot day, longer than the shorts I wear most of the year around the house and yard. I value comfort over fashion as I have all my life, to be honest. My "uniform of the day" at home is shorts and a short-sleeved shirt for most of the year.
I did buy a couple tunics - big mistake - I'm only 5'3", 140. Because my weight fluctuates a little up and down, I like pants/shorts with an elastic waist. Some look better than others and I look for those. I have some non-stretch bottoms and seldom wear them, to be truthful.
I like knit shirts, mostly plain, but some with stripes or prints. They're comfortable. I like to layer a tank under a cotton shirt and this would probably be with capris unless it was cool enough for long pants. I like skirts because they're cool, but can't find any that look decent so never wear them. Haven't worn a dress in ages - have several I've never worn.
I watched a few stylists yesterday and it seemed like most were dressing for New York. What about those of us who live out in the country? And who have budgets? I don't follow trends or even know what those trends are. I doubt any of my friends know either!
I did appreciate the fact you go to Walmart and the other stores you mentioned. There are bargains when you hunt. It's just not knowing what to buy. I've been thinking about it today and my friends and I mostly all dress just as we did years ago. I have a couple favorite stores and since I don't like shopping (never have!) go to those stores mostly. I buy new things and still find myself wearing the same outfits over and over.
So I'll keep watching your show. Just toss in a crumb here and there for those of us much older than 50 who still want to look good but aren't "fashionistas". Appreciate the tips! Thanks! Mary

      I love this comment. I’m 45, 5’ 6” and about 145. Lately, I think I’m wearing sz. 12.
Most of my life I’ve been very thin, so this new larger and flabbier bod is hard for me to feel comfortable in, and dress.
Where I live in Texas, we have the same LONG hot summer, and short winter. So, shorts and a t-shirt would be most comfortable, but, like I said, I’m not feeling great about showing these flabby legs.
So, I have found a solution! There are linen and cotton flowy pants. They feel thin, and airy, and cool, and they cover my older legs.

    • @mjpfl8131
      @mjpfl8131 ปีที่แล้ว +3

@@nattamused9074 Hi, I have a couple pairs of flowy pants and I like them as well. This is probably really pathetic, but I have a couple pairs of flowy capris also!!!
When I was your age, I was also a 12. Then the years went by and I almost hit 170. Yikes!!! Wish I could say I lost the weight by careful dieting, but no. I lost my appetite and for several months didn't eat much. Eventually found out it was a kidney problem which is now much better, but did result in losing 30 lbs. so guess everything does have a silver lining!
When I'm watching the stylists, I usually like the outfits but I'd mostly have no place to wear them! No one dresses up for anything, it seems. I used to enjoy dressing up for work in suits and dresses, but then it went to working remote. I had a co-worker who typically put on a decent top with her pj bottoms and that was her work outfit.
I sometimes think I would have enjoyed wearing the beautiful dresses from long ago, but without the corset. I actually owned a corset when I was in my 20s and didn't need it at all, but did wear it sometimes. Fashion insanity...

Tunic length tops that fit well actually work for us very tall and long waisted gals. I cannot wear most "current" styles- they are all so short. Wear what works for your body and what makes you feel pretty. The confidence is just as important as your clothing.

I understand everyone has their own way of dressing and should wear what makes them feel good and nothing less.

Great video and advice!! I see many older women with streaks of pink, blue, green, purple in their hair. The problem isn't the color, it's that the rest of their hair is grey and obviously uncared for. No style, needing a good cut. Often they are wearing frumpy clothes and no makeup. It's like the thought is the hair color will cancel out everything else. But it's such a mistake.

I am tiny and I wear a size OOO Petite. Everything is too big because I am slim. J. Crew sometimes has my size. I was always tiny and slim. After vanity sizing, everything in what was once my size is huge. Always took care of my skin which was and is dry like my mother's. Very lucky to have a style which is classic and I tweek it to stay current. Clothing which fits well is flattering, no matter what your size. I am going to be 74 next month, and aging gracefully. My hair is in a bob below my face, above my shoulders. Short hair is terrible for me, long neck, hair frames my face. A smile always brightens every face. I love vintage shoes because they are my size 4B. You have given wonderful advice, for everyone.

Love my Ziip but thank you for the discount so I could stock up on my favorite gels :) I buy and wear a lot of Loft's blouses with prints (I also buy their blouses in solid colors). Long sheer sleeves hide the parts of my arms that aren't my best feature at 60. I can wear them with jeans or under my business suits. My daughter's college age friends say I dress preppy. I would say the most youthful look is a HEALTHY one. My mom is 77 and rather enjoys telling everyone she's frail, elderly, etc. That's not a look I ever hope to wear. Doing weight training, Total Gym, getting my daily walks in, flexibility exercises: thats the most youthful look: strong, flexible and vibrant.... Taking care of yourself: mind, body, skin. Still caring about yourself and not "letting yourself go."

Thank you for calling out the "rules" about what we can wear dependent on age. I'm 5' 5'' but have a long body and short legs so longer skirts/dresses make me look frumpy. I've always preferred my skirts/dresses to fall on or above the knee, except where I've had longer dresses/skirts that had a long slit. Sadly now I'm 63 my mother constantly comments/disapproves about how short my clothes are (at the shortest they are just above the knee, tbh thinking back she did this when I was younger too). I ignore her, but it has made me question if I am dressing inappropriately. My husband tells me to ignore her and that I look better in a shorter length. It is really good to have that confirmed by another woman xx.

Great video! Very good points for us to think about. One of my biggest pet peeves that i notice in older women…they do not wear the proper bra size or even the proper bra for certain clothing. There are also “sister sizes” of bras where we can go up or down in size, for a better fit. So many women do not understand why bras use to be called “foundation” garments!! Because you need a good foundation (proper fit) to have your clothes fit your body. Too often women wear sports bras that do NOTHING for them except make them look FRUMPIER!!

I live in Florida so we don’t layer very much most of the year. I’m learning to not dress frumpy. I bought the ZIIP Halo about a month ago and have used it every day. I agree, it’s easy and fun to use. Results show up immediately and I’m hoping for the long term effect also. I still wear short skirts as midi-length looks frumpy on me unless it’s very straight. I’m grandmother to the bride soon and need a floor length black gown for her wedding. I feel it will overpower me and would like to have suggestions on what to look for. Thanks, Serena.

Thank you for your comment about this skirt and dress length because I was cleaning out my closet getting rid of things that was a little bit above my knee but I am a thin woman and I have many skirts and dresses that come right above the knee and maybe just a little bit shorter that looked just fine. I was going to get rid of those but now I am not because I can still look like a lady in them. Thank you so so much, have a blessed day you’re the best

I'm so glad I found your channel, Serena. You are "right on" in your style selections, and since you are the same colouring as I am, it is more helpful to me to see what you are choosing. The tunic tops will be a giveaway, and I do like the trendier looks.😄😄😄

I use loose clothes BUT only in monochrome. Black top and bottom long thin chain around neck or colourful scarf. I do the same with white outfit. Actually an off white is more flattering. I’m taller so maybe that’s why it works.

Dirty shoes. I see people who seem to not notice their shoes need a at least a wipe down. A beautiful heel with crusted mud on the sole, or white tennis shoes with dirty sides. It just spoils the look. The worse is a nice outfit with old raggedy flip flops😊 just a few things I notice.😊

The videos I have seen of yours, so far , have answered a lot of questions I have had about sizing for myself . Since we are somewhat busty, for example, we can look frumpy with certain tops . You have helped me so much and I know what you are saying are the answers to many of my thoughts I’ve had about clothing for my size especially. Thanks so much and I’m gonna enjoy past and future videos you have .
