Hello I just subbed to your channel, I also enjoy collecting rare manga.
What happened with Ultimo was a mix of two things: It being a Stan Lee title and it changing publishers in Japan.
Stan Lee passed away a couple of years ago, so I assume some people bought this as a way to collect Stan Lee stuff (This is just my assumption).
The other thing that happened and probably what really made these volumes OOP is that the rights to Hiroyuki Takei's works were changed from Shueisha to Kodansha and thus Viz had no way to legally reprint volumes.. In fact now you can't find Shaman king or Ultimo or anything Takei related in Viz's website.
Something similar happened in Spain around 10 years ago, the biggest publisher there (Glenat) went bankrupt and had to destroy every title they lost their license to before a set date, so I assume that something similar happened with this franchise, leftover stock probably had to be destroyed or something, again this is just an assumption based on what happened in Spain.
I bought volumes 1-8 a couple of years ago for dirt cheap.. IIRC like $20.. And I was just lazy to track down the rest of the volumes, but plenty of online stores had them for like $6 or less! Stupid me never got to buy them haha, in fact even this year some volumes were still available online (Even volume 12 IIRC) but not anymore.
I don't think Kodansha (Which is the new publisher) will reprint this, so I'm just gonna buy the Italian edition which I found cheap on eBay Italy (I'm from Mexico so I speak Spanish... And Italian seems close enough lol), and hopefully sell my 1-8 books later (Some of the early volumes have gotten pricier too iirc).
So.. Basically my guess is that Ultimo is not that rare at all, but people that own it just don't want to sell their copies but I think more copies of Ultimo exist than a lot of other manga, it just went OOP because of Viz losing the license and thus not being abe to reprint volumes if needed. But it will continue to rise in price because of demand, I guess.
Also.. Do you have any theories as to why that particular volume of Gantz (Volume 26) is so damn expensive? Here in Mexico there was a volume of Saikano Definitve weapon (It was volume 2) that was impossible to find, like I have tried to find it for like 15 years (For cheap, that's the fun for me haha) and nothing..
I have heard theories that supposedly that either the shipment with that particular volume got stolen/burned... All urban legends in the anime/manga community haha.
Thanks for the amazing comment, so much I didn’t even know about Ultimo! As for Gantz 26, I really have no idea why it’s so rare. Sometimes the content plays into the availability of a certain volume, whether it be a major plot point or something controversial. In Gantz 26 one of the characters shoots up his high school, so that might be a reason for controversy and therefore a smaller amount of the volume in circulation
@@ThePromG yeah I just read volume 26 a couple of days ago, so it might be sought after by more people that don't want the entire series or something, I never thought of it but you are probably right that could be the reason

Do you have an idea about the price range of Ultimo vol 11? I could only find one on Amazon and it was almost 900$, but that seems a biiiiit much.

I definitely recommend buying mangas you can read online for free. They look really good on the shelf
I have always found it dumb to buy the single versions for rare manga series when they have the omnibus but 20th century boys and gantz just look so good I might make it my goal to get them especially for the 20th century. Also great collection.

I collected a copy of the first print run for Ultimo 10-12. The B&N I bought them from only sold one copy per store so I assumed the series wasn’t popular. I was a collector who collected manga completely. I bought Ultimo 1 at a comic book convention where by chance I got to walk past the great Stan Lee. But I was too starstruck to ask him to sign my copy. Because of that memory I couldn’t part with Ultimo. Plus volume 1 was a good read.
You should do another one in case that you’ve gotten more rare mangas ever since , I think that the rarest volume that I have in my collection has to be excel saga volume 26 , someone offered me $220 for it like just the other day

@@gohanjr5748 most of the time a manga becomes rare when they stop printing it , like if there isn’t many mangas available of a certain volume

I've been collecting the Initial D manga, and each volume is no cheaper then $20 with my most expensive volume being $175.
Those prices are godly, I find these volume for over $60 each

Was it in English? Looks like the Spanish version is around $20, Japanese is $40 and English is $430 in acceptable condition. If it was in English I bet it sold pretty damn fast lol
@@ThePromG ye man it was under the english ones I thought it looked pretty weird that there were like 3 of $450 and 1 that was $20. I didnt get it cause im EU and got mine last week for $15 in seal from a pretty big retailer back here so didnt think it was worth that much rip.
