  • This Game of Thrones TV Tuesday video contains a list of the best faction armors for the hit HBO series, Game of Thrones. This list is in no particular order, and does not contain every suit of armor from the show, just the ones that are standard wear for all the best factions an or armies from the show. It is mostly about appearance, but i also touch on realism and practicality. So, sit back and enjoy this edition of TV Tuesdays, and please excuse the bad editing. I was a touch under the weather while making this one.

Captain_Alistair the northern troops do west chain mail under their armor. You see it on their bannermen. Watch the scene when Ned beheads the Night’s Watch deserter. One of the soldiers holding the deserter down, you see his chain mail sticking out from under his sleeve. The Bolton’s also wore chain mail. Their uniforms were just similar to the starks with the exception of the helmets. However, a full sallet with a bevor would make them look even more legit.

@@Dare_To_Game They do wear chain mail underneath though. To me, it looks like the Tully armour consists of a lair of padding, then a hauberk of chain mail that covers the body, hangs over the legs and reaches all the way down the arms and then the thick leather scale on top that can absorb blows onto the torso. Historically speaking, chain mail offered good protection, which is why I think the Tully armour doesn't do as terrible a job at protecting it's wearer.
Though the thick layers of padding, especially with these shoulderpieces they wear may restrict mobility somewhat. And I don't think we see any helmets or headgears in the show, other than coiffs. Even on background characters.
So that is where Tully armour loses out.
But overall, I like the design. It's pretty sensible, for a sensible and practical house, while also getting their theme across at a price low enough that it can be easily employed on the Tully army.
The fact that they use scale mail while their sigil is a fish just makes me irrationally happy.
And I do agree, we should have seen the Blackfish in action. The Blackfish's actor, Clive Russel, was roughly as tall as the Hound's actor, Rory McCann, so it would have been quite a sight.
They did him dirty in the show.

You can also see the Starks wearing triple-layer armour (gambeson, mail, brigandine).
Speaking of the Lannister helmets: the area they cover is pretty much the same as a sallet with a visor. I never really understood why, but they were very popular in real-life medieval Europe.
Leaving the lower half of the head free allows for better breathing, speaking and heat loss, but IRL, they usually wore a gorget with a bevoir.
PS: the barbute-style helmets (those with a T- or Y-shaped cutout) are also to allow for better breathing, but also vision. In shows, they are usually badly represented, as they leave too much of the face unprotected (GoT and e.g. Archilles).

  • @peenplays4717

The Lannister easily sport the most feasible and well-suited armor in the series. If the show were realistic, these dudes would almost be invulnerable, minus the obviously helmet flaws.

  • @jiriseidl4376
    @jiriseidl4376 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

Sry, but I just gotta disagree. The Stark armor is a poorly designed attempt at a coat of plates/brigantine. There shouldn’t be any of those gaps between plates - the plates overlap. This renders the armor very vulnerable to any sort of piercing attack, as the plates would direct them towards the gaps. The same goes for Mormonts armor. Ironically, Allisers armor is the most functional from all these designs.
For the Greyjoys, how does putting a layer of leather help with shock absorption? It does the opposite, it will catch blades and points, instead of deflecting them like plate does.

These were from men who were originally under Renly, but switched sides. I just like this minor detail, because of course regular men at arms wouldn't be completelly rearmed when they came under Stannis. Other than that, that different set is also pretty good looking, and as far as I know the only set which used iron hat helmet, which is a neat choice for men at arms.

IRL, some opted for less armor, even on the battlefield. The very basic armor would be half-armor, which covers the torso and the head. Conquistadors were big fans of this style. It often indicates that they were more worried about getting shot at than getting cut in combat. A 3/4 armor also covers the arms and upper legs. People rarely aim for the lower legs in combat and you can always lift them. The shins and calves are mostly at risk, when you're on horseback, or try to finish someone, who is already downed, or perhaps when someone uses a spear and switches between high and low attacks. Alternatively, if you are on a staircase, your legs become vulnerable as well. Ancient Greeks covered the shins because besides the head and the weapon arm, they were the only thing that actually protruded from behind their big roundshields. Adding bracers and greaves often results in limited mobility and adds weight to the ends of your limbs, which will make you slower and fatigue faster. This is worse than adding weight to your shoulders and hips. On the bright side, it will make empty hand attacks considerably more powerful. More importantly, protecting the forearms is a good idea, as they are quite vulnerable in swordfights and people block instinctively with their forearms... From personal experience, are the upper arms much less at risk than the forearms, or the torso (including the shoulders). Even the upper legs are typically more at risk. They are a bigger target, and move slower and unlike your arms, you don't block attacks with your shins, thus they are quite vulnerable.
PS: even a 1/2 armor makes punching pretty pointless, but makes you more vulnerable to wrestling, as your center of mass goes up.

Regarding if a soldier would opt for a lighter or heavier armor, it really depends on the time period. Warring sides would outcompete each other, changing the paradigm of war in every major developments.
There were times where knights with full chain armors were the epitome of quality. This is until countermeasures were made against it such as more use of crossbows. Resulting in more use of the bulkier plate armors, which were pretty much viewed as nearly invincible, especially against piercing armaments, until the infantry revolution and more use of gunpowder weaponry.
As gunpowder weaponry became much more used, heavy use of armor became too inefficient, along with improved metallurgy, resulting in the use of cuirass type armors like that of Conquistadors.

    • @edi9892

@@mr.beanladen1469 Even at the height of chainmail, not everyone who could afford chainmail trousers and long-armed shirts did wear it. Mail coats and shirts were still common. After all, soldiers hate excess weight, especially when they're out of combat marching, or doing other work... The same goes for open-faced helmets when more protective ones were available...

A small note, Gambeson actually provides reasonable stabbing protection. It is not as good as... well just about anything a little harder and denser, even horn or wood or boiled leather, at impact weapons.... maces, morning stars, war hammers etc... or weapons which use velocity to imitate force... a little energy one end, translating to a lot at the naughty end... glaives, halberds, poleaxes etc....but a well made Gambeson, at least one designed to be exposed armour, is not so bad at stabbing.
Remember, if you are wearing Gambeson as padding.... chances are, it is under mail, scale or plates of some kind, be it lamellar, laminar, coat of plates, full harness or something like brigandine. So, such clothing... Akaton, or Jack as it was known, may be anything from eight to twelve layers.... but Gambeson proper... that same type of armour made as amour designed to be primarily the armour exposed to the enemy, would generally be MUCH thicker. Gambeson 25 to 30 layers thick was not unheard of. With having a tight, thick weave, each layer's grain running across the previous one, stitched down tight only each other, for that many layers.. well not only was it just about cut, slash and slice proof... but incredibly hard to pierce with light weapons, such as swords, javelins, short spears and light arrows shot from light bows.
At those kinds of layer levels, it could offer some reasonable dissipation even against the aforementioned pole or force weapons, though you'd probably still want some kind of additional doubling beneath it, and of course, it was so hot and sweaty in a Gambeson that often, such was not worn, soldiers simply wearing a light shift underneath instead.
A lot of people think Gambeson is weal to stabs, but a well made piece, using well woven material, woven from well made linen thread, once assemble in the manner one used, cross graining the weaves, for good 18 or 20 layers, or more, they really did become almost as stab proof as they were cut proof.

They wear a mustard padded gambeson with large shoulder pauldrons and a gorget. They also wear a Norman style helmet with chain mail for neck protection and golden antlers above the noseguard. Ive seen them also with capes and shields.

  • @johncannon3593

Almost all of the armor in the show is junk. The Hound's, the Mountain's and Brienne's are the only halfway decent suits that come to mind.
Beyond that it is almost all junk.
The reason fantasy armor usually looks cooler than historical armor is because it doesn't have to actually work.
The northern Stark "Coat of plates" falls victim to the same error that you see of the "Braveheart" armor which is completely ahistorical. Why is it ahistorical junk? Because the plates don't overlap. A spear or other weapon thrust into it would merely skip off of one of the plates it might encounter and penetrate the space in between. It's junk armor.
