@Padarack1 It should be known that Greg Lake had only 3 weeks to prepare for this. Carl Palmer called him and asked him to help them out. I give Greg Lake kudos for being able to pull this off with only 3 weeks to prepare. And for those of us that are huge Greg Lake/ELP fans - being at this show would have been one hell of a treat even thoughf Greg did struggle a bit with it.
No, by most people's understanding of the term, "the frontman" is the guy who introduces the songs and sort of "entertains" the crowd. And on this particular night, before this particular song, that's exactly what Howe does. Watch the full concert sometime, you'll see what I'm talking about.
@TheFearlessFreep I agree....just different interpretations...both good...no disprespect here as I think both a fabulous...I am going to see Greg Lake next month with my brother in Atlanta....should be good....taking my 16 year old to the moody blues in raleigh, nc this month....she loves classic rock and prog rock as well as all different types....fun to share to music....like college:)
I had said years ago if John Wetton had ever left Aisa that Greg Lake would be the lead singer of Asia, and I was right it's like I knew it all along. You know in a person's voice what they sound like and Greg Lake and John Wetton's voice sounds so much alike it's eerie. I mentioned this to my girlfriend after Asia's second album came out in 1983', I told her the only person who had a comparable tone was Greg Lake, funny when you know, ya just know.
Actually Steve is the lead guitarist here. By most people's understanding of the term, Greg Lake would be the frontman. And despite your opinion, Asia was sadly probably the last time Steve delivered his full stud-muffin guitar god-ness.
I really love progressive rock and Asia and ELP...Asia is a bit formulamatic, but I really like Wetton. There are some songs that Lake can sing that Wetton cannot and visa versa. They are two of the better voices in progressive rock...Wetton can be more powerful, but Lake adds some softness to some bars and his own style as well.. He is not trying to be Wetton... I think musicly this concert is better than most as they really jam more than usually with Wetton. Not perfect, but good stuff..
No accident that Steve is acting like frontman here (and introducing), and before the last song, "Sole Survivor", and John Wetton is absent. Steve was the one basically who got him kicked out of the band. With a lesser singer (for ASIA's music) in place, Steve is more the star. Boy Greg really struggled with that last chorus
@TheFearlessFreep I am no idiot. ... There is no argument - that's the point; and the main reason I'm here. Some big 70s people and ELP fans like to think there is ... Because they're big ELP/Greg Lake fans. And yeah I like the video, it's a good point of historical reference. However Mr. 'Ok let's just have everybody win today' it was not a "great performance", of the band Asia. I'm not dissing you, just saying "what it is" (was). Carl had a great drum solo, that probably everyone could enjoy
@paperpichu You would have to be completely tone-deaf to think that, and to not hear that Greg Lake sang most of the ASIA songs through concert like total shit
geffen really dictated everything for them and put a lot a money into the first two tours i saw the 82 philadelphia tour with geoffs elevated keyboards and carls spinning drumset was probably the greatest show ive seen next to genesis 2007
@nickellmw "Might not have ..." .. ... Oookay, then. Anyway as I understand it (I have a really good source) John was booted. Btw Greg didn't 'know' all of the songs, he had to read lots of words from a teleprompter, on the floor; that was part of the problem ... of why he was so unforgivably awful. Also hurt his ability to seem confident and connect with the crowd, during the songs, IMO ... it was a bad decision, by all involved .. and effectively the end of the band. Though they're back, now.
wentkat - He didn't pull it off. That's the whole point. The big ELP fans think he did, but that's because they become tone-deaf when their hero, Greg ... is singing in any band. If he had the lyrics memorized and could concentrate on really singing, it may not have been as bad. But really to hear Wetton-era Asia songs you need Wetton. The management should have just told everyone "Ok, you hate each other; show up here and do 2 shows, guys, and then break up and go your seperate ways"

No problem thanks for posting these...this is the best quality I have seen of this show by far!

I thought he did just fine...
sorry...corrected it.
That's Wildest dreams...
Ah but you left out Steve Howe's cheesy attempt at being a frontman..."This concert truly is beyond our wildest dreams" or whatever it was.

@cjrvision Huh? .. They did not jam here more than they would have with Wetton. True they're both great ... but not both great for these songs.
