It's incredible how Gregg & John are no longer here physically, but their memories will be forever, especially by those who lived and were young during the golden age of Rock in the 80's.
My father participated in this live. At that time, Greg Lake's appearance caused a stir in the venue, and he said he was surprised by the high level of perfection. It was definitely a group of superstars.

This work is a remastered version, so the sound of each part sounds very clear, which is wonderful. The sound is very different from the version that was broadcast on TV at that time and the version recorded on the laser disc.
I never thought this show would ever see "daylight" again, especially with a new audio mix. While it's a real shame that Wetton couldn't be there, Greg Lake was the next best option and did the best he could under the circumstances. Is the "Road To Budokan" documentary that aired right before the show included as well? Thanks for digging this one out of obscurity!
The first Asia album is indeed the epitome of perfection. You should check out literally EVERYTHING Steely Dan has ever made for another example of a band seeking perfection.
That’s a tall drink of water, son. But to each their own. Hell, I’ve personally owned at least 5 different versions of Love Beach. Not necessarily because I love it.
Big kudos to whomever is responsible for remastering the audio. The original radio broadcast (Westwood One??) mix was pretty poor. Don't sue me but I still have the cassette tape I made of this, worldwide live event. This is indeed a much improved mix. Honestly I was not even a bit interested in buying this set. Now I think I may.
Lake does a passable job, but the reality is that Asia was a band formed around Wetton. Every time I see footage from this concert, I feel like I'm watching The Rolling Stones fronted by Steven Tyler.
Greg Lake - super of superstars - came in on virtually no notice to replace the addicted and decayed John Wetton, and gave Asia their best live sound ever, proving that John was only ever a reasonable facsimile for the great Greg Lake. What an incredible story behind this show. Go learn about it if you haven’t.
Asia better release more than the just MTv performance on the 12/6. Everyone already has that. Release the material from the 7th (which was broadcast by Westwood One, not MTv) and perhaps material from the 8th and 9th if that exists in the archives. Fans have waited 40 years for this, don't disappoint us!
the deluxe version has two performances from the 6th (american broadcast and the later japanese broadcast). The the 7th, 8th, and 9th have identical setlists to all the performances on the 6th so I think thats sufficient. I think only one soundboard recording exists from the other dates, id rather have two multitracked performances over bootleg quality audio.
@@jayceneal5273 The Japanese mix was the previous night (what became Westwood One radio show). It was used as the safety for the "Asia In Asia" telecast... then was used in radio special in 1984. That show was DEC 6 (Japan time). The USA telecast was DEC 6 (USA time). Some bootlegs got the date order mixed up and that stuck. The video from that night was not archived other than in the end-credit section of the telecast where you can see some artistic slo-mo of the band dressed differently.
@@RickNelson1967 thanks for clearing that up. The description from burning shed was a bit confusing. Either way they are different performances from two different nights (and different mixers) so I think that's a very reasonable representation from the bands run in Tokyo 83
@@jayceneal5273 @Rick Nelson This release is shaping up much nicer than I could have even hoped! Also, the performances on the 8th & 9th were longer than the performances on the 6th & 7th: Steve Howe played a few more acoustic songs, Geoff Downes played "Video Killed the Radio Star" as a keyboard solo, and the encore was "Don't Cry".
@@byzantineroman2407 Correct... these were not multi-tracked so only audience recordings exist. "Don't Cry" was rehearsed-up at the last minute with the backing singers.
I look forward to this! But why the last minute decision to not include The Road To Budokan? Also would be fantastic to see the Lititz 1982 rehearsal footage with Wetton which is listed on the Reelin In The Years website...
How important was Steve Howe in the great songs of Asia. I really notice now. In eighties I was Shocked by Palmer bombastic drums an Wetton voice. Wrong!!
I'll be honest. It that's a glimpse of what there is in the Blu-Ray, then it will be a letdown for me. I get that this an early 80's concert filmed for satellite TV, but I really think that the image should be better than that.
Is it me, or does ASIA’S music sound an awful lot like ELP’S Love Beach? I’m not saying I don’t like it, I love it. But, I also loved ELP’S Love Beach, so…
First album was incredible then John Wetton and Geoff Downes immediately tried to turn the band into the Archies and made Steve Howe and Carl Palmer glorified sidemen.
Yep, my mom gave me the "Alpha" album as a surprise and I played the entire album one time and then asked my mom could I return it back to the store. It didn't sound like 4 equal parts but rather two guys trying to drown me out with organ flavored gospel music. The band was over once Alpha was released because it just didn't work.
This is perfectly re-named as Asia Lake and Palmer
It's incredible how Gregg & John are no longer here physically, but their memories will be forever, especially by those who lived and were young during the golden age of Rock in the 80's.
Loved Greg he was such a a great guy and musician ! RIP!
Carl Palmer a superstar ,Best drummer ever
Greg Lake does a great job on this one.
I agree he practically puts his own stamp on it !
Pure talent ELP and Asia
Wonderful job Greg, we miss you so much.
Greg Lake fits in wonderfully with Asia's music. AWESOME!!!
I remember I was a senior in hs, and this concert was broadcast live on the radio. Greg and John had very similar voices.
That keyboard solo must last at least 2 minutes, is amazing and fit in the song very well.
My father participated in this live. At that time, Greg Lake's appearance caused a stir in the venue, and he said he was surprised by the high level of perfection. It was definitely a group of superstars.
John Wetton was ill at that time and suddenly decided Greg substitute only Japan tour. It's Yes + ELP = Asia.
Hand picked replacement, can't beat that with a stick!!
Or = Yelp.
From my understanding he was struggling with alcohol which negatively affected his performance and him and Steve didn't get along.
John and Greg, two great vocalist and musicians.
GREAT CLASSIC NEVER GET TIRED OF IT MISS THE 80'S SO MUCH!!!!!
John and Greg R.I.P.
Lake is one of my favorite talents. Wish he was co-vocal with Wetton instead, so both could max out.
WHAT A GREAT LIVE SHOW, REALY REMARKABLE. GREG WAS ONE OF A KIND.
Steve Howe is the best guitarist ever. He is backdrop and front. All different times in all songs he is in. Unique
Agreed.
True
Only Greg could have pulled this off. John and him sound so much alike.
I wonder how much time Greg had to learn the bass lines and the lyrics to all of Asia's concert songs?
you can imitate any keyboard sound... but not the minimoog sound. Fantastic after more than 50 years.
Man, that is one tight live arrangement and wonderfully done. Session musicians, all of them. Great job and a joy to listen to.
Love these guys! Such talent !!
Only one word. Marvelous.

I see the world through different eyes
Now that you're back

Asia's debut album monolithic gargantuan just a great album. every song was a masterpiece unto it's self. You'll not find a new album this good
Carl Palmer is definitely one of the most under rated drummers ever!
He is not underrated at all. In 73 until 77 he was considered as one of the 3 best rock drummers... In the late 80's it was somewhat different.
Nonsense. I've never met anybody who underates him.
'Underrated' is definitely the most overused term on TH-cam.
Best band ever!
ASIA in ASIA, nostalgic !
Absolutely brillant!!!

The most underrated band in rock history. I think the perfection of their first album even exceeds that of "Abbey Road".
First album exceeds Abbey Road how? Not even Steve Howe’s mother agrees with that.
The first Asia album is indeed the epitome of perfection.

I love Asia as they are one of my favorite bands, but there is no way they touch Abbey Road.
Definitely not, but they're close enough for me
Their music has a sound that is so predictive. Love Asia!

Great video, thanks! Asia was the first video on MTV that I watched in Spring 1981

Wow
Só a nata
Me hubiera gustado ver ahí a John Wetton

Amazing
It would be interesting to hear I'm sure it would have been fantastic Greg Lake on asia album.
Much better than with Wetton.

Because it is Greg Lake

Someone explains what the necessity of this horrible frame around the video!
I think this is just for advertisement... there is also a fake film effect on it if you look closely. It is natively a 4:3.
