  • An advanced whitewater kayaking technique, this video teaches how to use more fluid river features and your own momentum to generate lift. Also known as a Water Boof, just take it over a bit further for those steezy Ear Dips you're after! Prerequisites include edge control, rolling, and basic boofing technique.

amazing videos, so much knowledge. A tip tha gave me good boofs is kicking the wall of the kayak wit your foot on the opposite side of where you take the boof stroke.

Great content Boyd! Great times on Rio Maipo! Can't wait to get back there :)
Definitely gonna start practicing the technique on eddy lines!

Thank you for the tip at 1:56 "The bow should lift as you peel out" :-)

awesome stuff - great instruction. Keep it coming! Can you do a video on the backdeck roll - especially when to use it and when not?

definitely on the list... I think it’s an important topic, although I prefer it everywhere because it’s faster and leaves you less exposed if you do it correctly. It’s not a popular opinion when it comes to conventional thinking, but definitely tried and true in practice. Consider it on the way!

@@CleanLineKayaking cool, I agree - I am struggling to bring it from flat water to the current, or making it a reflex like mike regular roll.

These videos are class. Two questions if it is cool? A lot of paddlers seem to boof almost from a draw, like building up a pressure wave on the paddle, is this a big advantage? And do you find the forward offset (surge style) paddle is a big help? Thanks

@Boyd Ruppelt Cheers for the response, appreciate it. I actually just picked up a set of Galasport Manic Elites, they are cheaper than surges here in Ireland, if you can ever get them to write back to you

Can you provide some clarification about paddle position. Are you still maintaining a vertical paddle stroke?
It appears that the forward stroke with the lean boof is a little more of a low angle stroke for stability.

Great stuff, Boyd. Can you recommend any good kayak summer programs/classes in the Southeast? I turned my teen sons on to paddling. They had a few private lessons from the NOC, which was great, but I'd like to explore other options.

The guys at NOC are great. OKS Keeners is an outstanding program to look into - check out Ottawa Kayak School (they're doing some stuff here in the SE states too), but I also highly recommend ACE Kayaking if they're interested in some solid progression. Tell any of them I sent you and be sure to say hi. I do instruction sometimes as well, but nothing longer term like that. If I think of anything else I'll post up, but those will all be a huge help for you.
