Bow Dry Paddling: How To Stay On Top
All these new high rocker kayak designs make staying on top of the flow so much easier, but the technique behind it is a game changer. Keeping your bow up means maintaining speed, control, and the freedom to quickly change direction. It also means drops and ledges can act like ramps and aid in acceleration and holes don't have to slow you down.

The Hand Roll: How to Roll Your Kayak Without a Paddle
มุมมอง 15K8 หลายเดือนก่อน
There are a lot of ways to hand roll, and this only includes one or two of them, but my goal here is to give you a foundation for learning the skill on your own using a technique that works. You can also learn with hand paddles and webbed gloves if you need to get the motion down. Just be sure to focus more on a good hip snap (aka knee drive) as a priority. Love the content as usual but I did have a question about it: I’ve had an instance on a manky SE creek, South Sauty, where I was trying to dry bow everything. I ended up shooting right over a hole but landed directly into an FU rock hidden under the water with all of that momentum and flipped super fast. I was like inches away from destroying my face on a rock. Any advice on when to use the dry bow paddling and then when to maybe be a little more conservative in maintaining a strong stance without exaggerated movements to make braces more effective? Or, which this could be likely too, did I just have bad from in the dry bow paddling and end up leaning too far back or something? What I’m currently thinking is to use dry bow paddling for a planned purpose like on the side seam of a tongue to dodge a beefy hole in bigger water, and maybe paddle a little more conservative in something super manky. Thanks as always and keep it up!

    • @CleanLineKayaking
      @CleanLineKayaking วันที่ผ่านมา

      First, imagine how bad it would have been had your bow been deep in the pile instead. Bow dry paddling is actually the most conservative and safe way to paddle, even in the southeast. I'd say especially on manky runs. It's how I paddle on Jones Creek in AL for example. I'm very familiar with S Sauty too- fun run, but definitely has some F-u rocks hidden. Second, river reading and looking ahead will help you see the secondary rock coming, but learning to lean boof will help you use it when one catches you by surprise. That said, without seeing any video, it sounds like you could have been over-leaning when you switched quadrants. the finish is often more subtle and you want to make sure you're more forward and over your boat as you leave the pile... even "locked in" with the skip. Hope this helps! Love some Bama creekin' 🤙

    Been struck by blind panic, and was helped by the instructor very well. For years I worked at handling that fear through paddling circumstances I dared to take on. On our main river, the Waal (the Rhine), and on big flatwater. To challenge myself, to overcome tresholds in trusting my skills. At age 67 I started my white water career only on condition that I learned a reliable roll. Did that pay off! After two seasons including lessons in the French Alpes, white water is my passion. Over time, the horror of my fear has made me happier than I could ever imagine.

      No, I don’t actually wear them more than anyone else, and never under my drytop. When I do wear them, I wear Fox Titan Pro motocross pads, usually just when I creek in the southeast US. Even then, I rarely hit anything when I’m rolling. The backdeck roll is fast and stays shallow so there’s usually no extra reason to wear them, but there have certainly been some hits while rolling on stouts where I was glad to be wearing them and even more glad it wasn’t my face. 🤙🏻

    Hey man! You're the perfect teacher. I love your videos. You asked for ideas. 🙏 I see the lock-in as the necessary beginning of "wearing your boat" (as opposed to sitting in it). The other part is what one does when locked in. Kayakers need to acquire conditioned responses for stabilizing which allow them to deal with turbulent water flow around their boats without necessarily having to explicitly think much about it. I think that kayakers need to relegate a part of their brains to the task of stabilization. Core muscles (for boat edge, balance, and for transmitting the power of strokes), and a complete repertoire of strokes (including draw strokes and hybrids with other strokes and with brace) can be somewhat relegated to the background of the brain. With that skill he can have very good automatic responses in turbulence and he can also better think higher level thoughts, such as where he's trying to go, etc. A person can practice relegating stabilization skills to the background by intentionally dwelling a little in squirrally water (foregoing hard forward stroking through it), as he dares. He can also find times to challenge himself in flatwater (including pool sessions) by just using the back of his brain to throw imagined situations at himself, intentionally losing balance with various body positions, etc, and responding with strokes & braces. Maybe you have other/more ideas.

    As one coach put it to me once, look for the high points. I love the sweep boof technique. One thing though, too much edge combined with not getting the boat straightened up to ride over a feature can result in a beatdown on some strong seam lines and holes, particularly as a light paddler. I won't tell you how I know that... 😂 Great video as always!

    Tucking forward is for whitewater kayaking where rocks and other hard obstacles are in the way. It keeps you from bumping your head against them. Ocean kayaking is a different kettle of fish.

    • @CleanLineKayaking
      @CleanLineKayaking 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      tucking forward kills your roll in all kayaking- this is a whitewater channel- but rolling dynamics are the same with both. The best way to avoid rocks is to roll faster and that means focusing on proper technique by not tucking forward when you roll. This roll technique also works in all kayaks

I know Jackson Kayak made him some special outfitting for better boat control and he rolled fine... there's a method of hand rolling that works well where you cross your arms over the cockpit and roll with the top arm while pulling the cockpit rim with the bottom arm- it would likely work with your friend and is described in the hand rolling video. Great tips! I’ll add a few more: 1. In the pool or where ever practicing, instead tossing someone around, do bracing drills. Stand behind them and try to flip them randomly to one side or the other. After a few random braces, flip them too hard to brace so they have to roll up unexpectedly. This accomplishes 2 things - it teaches someone how to have a reflexive and rock solid brace, and it teaches them how to roll when flipping unexpectedly. To randomize L/R, have them always do a half or full roll so they are rolling on both sides. This is how I taught my daughter to have a solid brace and bomb proof roll on both sides. 2. The usual cause of roll failure is head lift or leading with the head. It’s nearly impossible to roll with a fully committed head lift because you are pulling on the wrong knee to lift your head. When you see someone rolling up barely and doing that. Do not congratulate them on their sloppy roll. I see that way to often, the “any roll is good” BS. Nip that in the bud and save them many future swims. To end that once and for all, encourage to always look at the rolling blade regardless if they can see it. If the head is turned towards the rolling blade, they won’t lead with it. 3. Once you learn to roll, don’t practice in the setup position, ever. You never flip on the river set up. Practice setting up with every roll. 4. Acclimate to the water so you don’t freak out when you flip on cold days. Do practice rolls at the beginning of the run and a few spots down the run regardless of conditions. You will have a much better chance of nailing a roll if you do that.
