The only 2 people I outright respected from DSMP were Technoblade and JSchlatt. Techno was in his own bubble and stayed out of all of the drama, while Schlatt was the only person who drew the line and told people not to cross it. I didn’t like the direction the SMP was taking with their scripted stories, and the chaotic tone the two brought to the server felt refreshing.

Online influencers were always just people. Most got swept up in fame very quickly, they never considered how popular they would get, and its not their fault. Dream never did anything particularly bad, and for a content creator to have to check every single tweet, and video, it would be hellish. He was just a guy who got a lot of hate. It's not his fault

my guess is because they’re mentally ill. not be used as an insult, but a genuine statement. i say that because i was one of those people. i never bullied anyone because of it but i was way too interested in these people’s love lives. and while i was doing it, i was in an extreme depressive episode (i am doing better now & advocate against shipping real ppl, unless they state they’re okay with it & are already in a relationship). im sure a lot of people fell down to rock bottom during lockdown & shipping these people helped them cope. it definitely doesn’t help that dream & george fed the fire by joking about being in a romantic relationship. there were probably some people who got so wrapped up in their own delusions that they started to become aggressive to others. it’s not an excuse but it’s a reason i suppose.
Well, there wasn't any. The dsmp was huge and then it ended and Dream stopped uploading. He also had a grooming allegation he took a FUCKING YEAR to officially address and debunk, and he has his friendgroup split in half and many of them say he treated them like shit. So he lost his fandom due to all that. But there were no consequences for "baiting" his audience (can't really call it baiting when he was very upfront about the fact it was a joke and it was a very one sided joke 95% of the time). Like, fuck all.
This ship has 100% made heat waves popular. I remember driving one day and I sent a photo to my friend saying "omg the radio just played heat waves!" I remember watching a video when heat waves started to become popular about how it was played a school event and someone screamed you melt me when it played. Tbh, I didn't mind the ship, infact, I find it hilarious as someone who used to watch a lot of og minecraft roleplays back in the day. Some of those dnf fanfic are crazy. I read the fanfiction "Uninvited" all in one day because it was just genuinely good.

I really appreciate that you don’t seem to imply all people in fandom that ship characters are like these people. Contrary to popular belief, most people in fanfic circles think shipping real people is weird and creepy and we don’t want to be associated with these people.
With a fictional character, it's possible to know exactly what they're thinking and feeling at any given moment, so it's much more maleable to write them into a fanfic scenario. With a real person, you can never truly know. That creates dissonance almost immediately, because the will of the writer and the will of the real person openly clash.
you see a lot of people today arguing about pro-ship or anti-ship but where were these people when AO3 tags were flooded with fanfiction about the real life children in DreamSMP being violently assaulted by their adult friends ? there are lots of minecraft youtuber groomer jokes but the fanbases were on that shit too with the willingness to cross the boundaries of real life people and it wasn't just other children writing and drawing it was full grown adults who should have known better

While reading Heatwaves I never thought of the characters as the actual people, instead I thought of them as characters who coincidentally were the same as their real counterparts. I really like Heatwaves/Helium, and I personally find them to be really good. That being said, I fully support and respect tbhyourelame’s decision, and I’m happy I got to read their writing at all

The only 2 people I outright respected from DSMP were Technoblade and JSchlatt. Techno was in his own bubble and stayed out of all of the drama, while Schlatt was the only person who drew the line and told people not to cross it. I didn’t like the direction the SMP was taking with their scripted stories, and the chaotic tone the two brought to the server felt refreshing.

Online influencers were always just people. Most got swept up in fame very quickly, they never considered how popular they would get, and its not their fault. my guess is because they’re mentally ill. not be used as an insult, but a genuine statement. i say that because i was one of those people. i never bullied anyone because of it but i was way too interested in these people’s love lives. and while i was doing it, i was in an extreme depressive episode (i am doing better now & advocate against shipping real ppl, unless they state they’re okay with it & are already in a relationship). im sure a lot of people fell down to rock bottom during lockdown & shipping these people helped them cope. it definitely doesn’t help that dream & george fed the fire by joking about being in a romantic relationship. there were probably some people who got so wrapped up in their own delusions that they started to become aggressive to others. it’s not an excuse but it’s a reason i suppose.

Well, there wasn't any. The dsmp was huge and then it ended and Dream stopped uploading. He also had a grooming allegation he took a FUCKING YEAR to officially address and debunk, and he has his friendgroup split in half and many of them say he treated them like shit. So he lost his fandom due to all that. But there were no consequences for "baiting" his audience (can't really call it baiting when he was very upfront about the fact it was a joke and it was a very one sided joke 95% of the time). Like, fuck all.

This ship has 100% made heat waves popular. I remember driving one day and I sent a photo to my friend saying "omg the radio just played heat waves!" I remember watching a video when heat waves started to become popular about how it was played a school event and someone screamed you melt me when it played. Tbh, I didn't mind the ship, infact, I find it hilarious as someone who used to watch a lot of og minecraft roleplays back in the day. Some of those dnf fanfic are crazy. I read the fanfiction "Uninvited" all in one day because it was just genuinely good.

I could not imagine reading a fanfic about real people without feeling weird / uncomfortable
With a fictional character, it's possible to know exactly what they're thinking and feeling at any given moment, so it's much more maleable to write them into a fanfic scenario. With a real person, you can never truly know. That creates dissonance almost immediately, because the will of the writer and the will of the real person openly clash.

you see a lot of people today arguing about pro-ship or anti-ship but where were these people when AO3 tags were flooded with fanfiction about the real life children in DreamSMP being violently assaulted by their adult friends ? there are lots of minecraft youtuber groomer jokes but the fanbases were on that shit too with the willingness to cross the boundaries of real life people and it wasn't just other children writing and drawing it was full grown adults who should have known better

As a former dnf fanfic writer you worded this so nicely, like i mean, it was th pandemic and i didn't understand that these guys where just clowning around for views and i latched onto something really cringey, but at the end of the day it helped me become the artist and writer i am today, and with small helpful communties inside the larger toxic one, it really was comforting for that short period of tme. loved the vid!!! pls make a helium video!!!

honestly i dont regret this phase, i was cringe asf but it was fun to bond with my best friend over this lmao. we'd share animatics, references, match wallpapers, stay up for the championship thing, and she was a fic person but i wasnt. tho she did share some really good ones to me, which did include flowers from 1970 (i found it good at the time) and also another one that was really sad + tragic ab sleepy bois inc. forgot the name but it was realllyyy good. but yea, it did def shape us + our friendship lol, i always love obsessing over things with other ppl. thats prob why i introduced my friend grp to murder drones, helluva boss, even valorant and overwatch sadly 😭

While reading Heatwaves I never thought of the characters as the actual people, instead I thought of them as characters who coincidentally were the same as their real counterparts. I really like Heatwaves/Helium, and I personally find them to be really good. That being said, I fully support and respect tbhyourelame’s decision, and I’m happy I got to read their writing at all

Totally agree. I just wanted to read gay shit for free and Heat Waves and other fanfic has always been great for that. I’m grateful for tbhyourelame and heat waves edits on YT bc it would have taken far too long for me to discover AO3 and Glass Animals otherwise, which have influenced me hugely. HW and Helium are genuinely good, especially if you read the characters as entirely separate from their real life counterparts.
And it’s easy for me to separate fact from fiction, but I guess some people take too much joy in being delusional😂 /lh/hj
