I know some folks are saying it's too fast... but for years I have never gotten into these Haydn concertos mainly because the orchestras and soloists always sound to heavy and sluggish slogging through slightly slower tempos. This is light and flies; keeps the ball up in the air.

Brian Grimm's Cello Zone You're totally right, I'm currently learning the first Cello Concerto by Haydn and if it isn't played slightly faster than moderato it will sound too heavy and will lack that lightness that is so typical for Haydn

Ruwen Engelmann this is performed at the right tempo. I'm sure somewhere out there the composer approves, and the first and third movements in particular are played at the standard pace of most Classical period allegros.

    • @Amittai_Aviram
      @Amittai_Aviram 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

Yes! In fact, that is what is wrong with Du Pré's otherwise flawless performance-it is _plodding_. I sctually could not listen through to the end. Maisky's tempo is in the spirit of the period and the composer.

I need to listen to other recordings, I’m just soooo obsessed with this one. it’s just too perfect, from the acoustics, to the camera work, to the cello playing and the authenticity of having the cellist conduct.

For me this is the most beautiful cello concerto, sensitive, emotional, melodious. And it's very delicately difficult too. This is a beautiful performance by Misha, the tempo is a bit lively, but nice, and OK. Now, as regards this concerto, me, a former cello student, must mention this: I had, thru a relative living in the USA, gotten the scores of this concerto in a version by Leonard Rose. And that version is the very best, in my view, and nobody plays it ever. Rose modified a bit the original score,, and mad it better than the original. Same with the cadenza he wrote. The Rose version of this concerto is the best one in my very serious view. And none of today's performers plays it. Get that score and see it yourselves. Unfortunately I lost that score, which was in my possession in the 1960s.

If when you say “delicately difficult” you mean hard as hell, than yes.

the rose version is available on amazon. i bought it a few years ago and it turns out that an entire section from the first movement was removed. in my opinion, it wasn't that great.
edit: i saw a review on amazon for shostakovich cello concerto 1 that the international music company, the publisher of the Rose version of haydn cello concerto 2, often changes the sheet music to evade copyright claims. i dont know how true that is, but it is possible that the original Rose version was better than the IMC Rose version.

I have known this concerto since I was a child. We had it on 78rpm records, six sides on three discs. I still remember approximately where the beaks in the music are. This is the first time that I've seen it performed. Mischa Maisky is a great performer and a conductor as well. Excellent performance.

    • @jakubedwardschiffauermedraj
      @jakubedwardschiffauermedraj 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    M. Maisky & the Wiener Symphoniker present a superb Haydn - Cello Concerto performance. Maisky channels Haydn's elaborate cello melody with amazing fluency, lyricism charm and magisterial control overall all aspects of conducting while performing with the cello. Haydn's Cello Concerto no. 2 is a wealth of melody and sonorous tones. Celestial and uplifting concert!

Mac Wyn he plays a lot of things differently compared to the "standard" as you could say. He plays it a bit too fast, doesnt do the chromatic decent in the very second measure and the version he uses is just written like that, even some of the notes are just completely different but not wrong because it could be interpreted that way.

@@kalinkamalinka8862 didnt anyone notice how the catchy parts of Despacito have mostly been copied from the Enrique Iglesias song: Bailamos
Apparently 3% of the population love classical music. And I would say that its mostly because Classical music is not accessible enough to the modern youth. Blame Hollywood, blame people listening to youtube music at a house party, blame whatever. Its an unfortunate fact.

I don't know which piece is more musically "sound", but I personally much prefer this over Despacito, or ever Desperado, for that matter.
Let me amend what I just said: I heard Despacito in an arrangement for cello duo. It's fantastic, but that said, I still prefer Haydn's 2nd cello concerto.

Probably one of the finest recordings of this concerto ever, I feel. The Allegro moderato has huge depth, and yet fun and lightness, all as one! Even slightly better than Mischa's recordings for DeutschGram. with Natalia Gutman. The sound on this (here) recording is fuller. Something about the room? Where is that ROOM? It's marvelous.

Astonishingly impressive! Incredible! I am just speechless. I shall comment on Haydn's style, though: all until 19:48 is more or less a classical era style; 19:49 to 19:52 is almost as if it were film music; and 19:53 to 19:59 is basically Baroque music. This is what I felt, and if by any chance someone sees this comment, perhaps this individual who for some reason read my comment can give his or her opinion by making a reply. But in any case, it is excellently performed and well composed!

As far as I can tell, he wrote his own and never released it.
There's probably a copy somewhere that someone transposed by ear, but I've never seen it
Edit: it's Natalie Gutman's cadenza but there is no copy of it anywhere I know. Under the dvd or vhs whatever this was released on, the cadenzor for the D Concerto was Gutman, but as far as I know there is no video of her playing it, or anyone else. Just Maisky

People can dislike something without being able to do it. If an electrician comes and “fixes” your lights so that there is a 30 second delay for them to come on, you wouldn’t like that, but you also wouldn’t be able to do what the electrician did

I think is Haydn`s best cello concerto. The c major is incredible but does not the lyrical depth for me.

shnimmuc the second movement is highly expressive, almost like Beethoven and the early Romantic composers.

The piece wins I think, Haydn wasn't a fan of the concerto form. He only wrote them to order, or if someone asked nicely. He brought the whole 20 -25 of his orchestra to the party as well.

      Natalia Gutman's.
Problem is, it is not anywhere on the internet. Not on imslp, no pdf, no picture of it. The only way I know is this recording was part of a 1987 vhs (or dvd I don't know what was around then I'm young), and under Haydn's D concerto it's listed as the cadenzor being Gutman.
If you ever do find it please tell me, I've been looking for years

I guess if you can play this as fast as he does you feel obliged to do so. His playing is exquisit, but I feel uncomfortable at this tempo.
