Respectfully disagree. I think, personally, that Decap Attack is a very fun game, challenging but not TOO hard, visually impressive, Top notch sound with great bosses. It's one of my all-time favorite Genesis platformers.
Thanks for the vid! Good editing Kris and great script. This isn't a title I can get excited about; looks ugly, bland and poorly animated IMO. I think the footage would have looked a lot better when using a CRT filter / scanlines; the image is harsh.
It's clear Vik Tokai didn't have the artistic eye other developers of the time did. Tiny Toon Adventures or Ristar (among many others) just blow it away in terms of color usage.
I remember playing this game a little bit on Sonic's ultimate Genesis collection once. I only played it a little bit because honestly I barely ever played Sonic's ultimate Genesis collection and it was the only way I played the De Cap Attack. I wasn't even aware of De Cap Attack back in the 90s, but I'm pretty sure I would have liked it a lot back then.
Dynamite Headdy like many other 16-bit Sega games suffer from the stupid "fight blockbuster rentals" epidemic, where SoA would take the balanced Japanese version of a game and make it unreasonably difficult so ppl couldn't beat it in a weekend, because logic lol? Streets OR3, Contra HC +many others also suffer from this making the games worst than they should have been. So if you found the game too hard, I'd recommend the Japanese original version.
A friend of mine had this Magical Hat and it's way better, the music, the environment, everything fits, also the protagonist is more charismatic and make ugly faces when get hit.
The level layouts in this game are fantastic. They don't change up enough in the game itself but compared to other games out there I find them unique in comparison.

It always just looked like a fairly bland and mediocre platformer, that doesn't really take any risks with any unique or exciting gimmicks to speak of. Dynamite Headdy this is not! (Then again, what _is?_ )
so my first game was ghosts and goblins, then after that I got this game, and third game was taz tasmanian devil... so needlels to say, I am really into being tied up and spanked now... >:3

Something about this game reminds me of the Bonk series... little graphical touches, the level signs and such, the way color is used, the way the backgrounds look... it all reminds me of Bonk. Now I gotta go look and see if they shared any of the same people.
...and some of the sound effects remind me of Rocket Knight Adventures... either Vic Tokai nabbed up random low-tier people throughout the games industry or they're surprisingly good rip-off artists.
If you haven't checked out the Tempo video yet I would recommend it. It was developed by Red Company and has that whacky Bonk's charm. Although you probably already knew this :)
While were on the subject of awesome quirky sega exclusive platformers is there any chance you might ever do a video on Astal(Sega Saturn) or Super Magnetic Neo(Dreamcast)?

I have an old copy I got in middle school at a Play N Trade for $6.00 that's missing the instructions has a warped spine and the disc is somewhat beat up although i've played through it several times(I always die at the last boss with Jerados Human) without any issues so I know it works and with it being my favorite game of all time i've decided to get a good condition condition complete copy to replace it. I could send you my old copy if you want.
As for Super Magnetic Neo I think it looks like a great game(I love me a conceptually origonal challenging platformer when I can find one) and i've been looking into getting a dreamcast again to play it.

Lol,yeah I used to ask myself if the developers were Public Enemy fans,doubt it but an optional 2nd playable character with a huge clock around it’s “neck” would have been a blast lol.I still really like this game & think it’s up there with ristar & Dynamite Heady,all of which use their heads to attack & all 3 are on the 360s ultimate megadrive(genesis)collection & all 3 are great imo

You forgot to mention that there are 2 power-ups that permanently increase the size of your life bar, one on level 3-3 & another on level 6-2, for a maximum of 5 hearts.
www.vgmaps.com/Atlas/Genesis/ Go to the maps of Decap Attack, in all of the maps, they have the items that are inside the tiki heads hovering above them to let you know what's inside, you should be able to see an empty heart hovering over a tiki head in those 2 levels, the one in level 3-3 is in the big area directly underneath the START sign, and the one in level 6-2 is at the bottom of the long pathway on the left side of the screen, under the 5 tiny lava pits and above the 2nd, larger water section.
This feels like the kind of thing that if they had a sequel or two to refine could have resulted in an absolute masterpiece.

This game was so much fun back then i think it held up well in terms of graphics i think its still good.
I love Decap Attack, but I agree that they should have put the horror elements to better use in enemy/boss designs and level design.

Psycho Fox.
Decap Attack is many times better than Psycho Fox. The developers refined their game mechanic.
