I think it's a meta thing. They are playing it as "Shakestoe and Son," incorporating well-known tropes of classic TV comedy, like stopgap wisecracks, addressing the camera, and laugh tracks.
It seems that a lot of recent comics have taken the words of elizabethan Ricky Gervais about jokes and laughter to heart
