about your suspicion of Gandalf "He knows everything but he is letting everyone figure it out", you just accidentaly nailed exactly the role of his character in this story. When Tolkien wrote Gandalf, he was not supposed to be this sourcerer fire beaming everything with magic, but rather he is someone sent to middle earth to guide mankind, to give them courage and means to fight for themselves. He knows he won't be forever there and everyone must find a way to keep on fighting without him. That's why most of the time he avoids direct confrontation, and always gives people the free will to decide (remember the 1st movie when he asked Frodo where they should go even though he was terrified of going to Moria cuz he knew what was there?). Wizards in this universe are like angels sent to Earth, they are not meant to do the job for people, but to help and inspire them to be able to do so.

@@ronweber1402 only sort of. He only remembers *some* of what was sung, so he doesn't know literally everything: but he does know more than most of the others. For example: he knows that Gollum will be important, but not precisely how. He know Merry and Pippin will do *something* cool in Fangorn, but not what exactly. He didn't see Saruman's betrayal coming, but he did foresee his death in Moria. Also, when he comes back he has actually visited the Timeless Halls again, and been privy to part of Saruman's Music. That's how he knew about Theoden's corruption, and how he's able to cast Saruman out now when he could not before.

    • @VenomBGR

Perfectly said, i just want to add that since Gandalf is not of this world (middle earth) that belongs to mortal races and elves, he is a visitor and thus was sent only to guide. It's the job of the inhabitants of middle earth to protect their home.

    • @bobbwc7011
      @bobbwc7011 ปีที่แล้ว +19

Not really. They were sent with a very specific mission: Organise resistance against Sauron and help defeat him. Gandalf is the only one of the wizards to do his job. He essentially played a game of chess and managed to hide his moves. He carefully acquired information and whenever he had the chance to take a piece off the board, he did it. The "incident with the dragon", of which he claims "I was barely involved" is a typical Gandalf move: He knew Smaug would be an almost undefeatable ally to Sauron. So he orchestrated the journey and did a number of low key things to kill Smaug. He also convinced the Council to move against the Necromancer (Sauron) and it was Saruman and "Saruman's devices" driving Sauron away (which also led to the corruption of Saruman because after that incident, Saruman started to travel there multiple times and searched the Anduin river for the One Ring as he had found out it was lost in that region).
Another example was the Balrog: Gandalf seized the opportunity to defeat the Balrog who otherwise would have become a strong asset to Sauron.
Gandalf's trick was to always make it look like he was some sort of fool, having no plan, accidentally accomplishing certain things or "being barely involved" in things. Sauron thought about Gandalf in the same way he thought about Saruman: A corruptible wizard who wants the One Ring for himself, who is ego tripping and power tripping.
Gandalf's journey was very complex and all over the place but he was never just a guide. He got actively involved. In the books there are a few incidents when he uses a significant bit of his magic, especially after he returned as The White.

I like how she explains a Maiar without knowing what Gandalfs real purpose is. They arent meant to shape the world only help guide it, so yeah she nailed it, he knows way more than everyone but isnt acting on everything, some things have to unfold by the hands of the beings of that world.

His memory of Valinor (Heaven basically) is fuzzy, but he still has some vague sense of the cosmic order. In other words, he can't outright see the future, but he can make out its shape a bit. A bit of Middle Earth trivia. The Ring of Barahir which Aragorn wears dates back to the First Age, (remember, this is now the Third Age). This ring is ancient, many thousands of years old, and passed down to Aragorn from his forefathers. It was given to Barahir by Finrod, the brother of Galadriel for his help in fighting Morgoth.

The reason gollum/smeagol talks in in a kind of third person kind of way is because essentially the ring has caused him to have what we call in real world multiple personality disorder. The way he got the ring and having the ring caused him to split into two personalities gollum is the part of his personality that is dominant and will kill, manipulate and scheme to get what he wants which is the ring, smeagol part of his personality is who he was before the ring found him and is the part of him that is good and alot more vulnerable and is the side of him that hates the ring but ultimately the dominant side won and was a lot more prominent for the rest of the books/movies

  • @noneofyourbusiness3288

22:02 one of the things to understand about Hobbits is, that they are almost supernaturally sneaky. One could say they are it is their form of magic. That is why the ring makes Bilbo, Gollum and Frodo invisible, because it amplifies ones natural abilities. Sauron is a gifted seducer/liar, as well as craftsman, so with the ring he dominated minds and subjugated most of middle-earth during the second age. If Gandalf wore the ring, it would probably would not make him invisible, but enhance his magic spells.

This will help make sense of the movies. Gandalf is the same species of being as the Balrogs/Sauron before twisted by Melkor[Morgoth]. They are all Maiar (primordial spirits). Gandalf named Olórin created by Eru’s Thought (extensions of Eru Îlluvatar himself whilst they had their own free will & individuality. He essentially got the chance to experience and study other parts of himself through this.) among the other Ainur before the Years of the Lamps roughly 9,000+ years before arriving in Middle-earth; In Valinor he was known as Olórin.(Remember though he formally existed before the world existed and his form becoming Gandalf hadn’t happened yet. He was sent to Middle-earth in human form around the year 1000 of the Third Age. So his many forms had different ages in length of existing. He’s very cool right! Could he get any cooler!? 😎❤️ Another thing is when he arrived in middle earth he was disguised as an elf & lived among them whilst they were unknowing & he became to be known as Mithrandir to the Quendi/Eldar❤️ He could have very well dwelled with the elves far earlier just do to his curiosity & simple desire to explore and be around the firstborn (TheElves)
    Gandalf The Grey/White
Estimated at 15,000 years old (following his quote "300 lives of men, I have walked this earth"), It says that Gandalf was the wisest of the Maiar besides Melian herself. There were a lot of Maiar that were considered really great and powerful.
However, there is a much longer answer. Like Sauron(former name is Mairon) & the other Istari (the order sent around the same time & of which he was appointed leader but he being who he is & a student of the Vala by the name Nienna & Lorien(Irmo). Gandalf was a Maiar, an angelic spirit created by Eru at the beginning of time and therefor one of the many Ainur who sang the world into being & Eru just helped their creation take shape and basically stated “behold YOUR creation” & basically what happens in that world goes sort of preordained as by that song eons ago so really only the ages after Dagor Dagorath will truly be an age that isn’t full of strife and sadness and longing.
Also. These lamps are what were before even the two trees. These were Giant mountains but also like light houses but housing a great power but it may have also been where two special Maia lived that helped in the creation in the sun and moon after Melkor With eldrich terror Ungoliant killed the trees, so yea “Arien” is the Maia who basically exists with the sun and her brother and or lover of sorts is the one who wanders with and guides the moon. Of which that other Maia was “Tillion”

The ring doesn’t want to be destroyed and it’s power can make it harder and harder to achieve that goal. By the end frodo’s neck is all cut up from the weight of the ring pulling on the chain and cutting his skin. Damn what a good story!

  • @Laxhoop
    @Laxhoop ปีที่แล้ว +49

    Fun fact:
The movies never explain it, but the swamp of dead bodies they walk through is actually the battle ground from a war from before Sauron was the biggest threat.
Long ago, when elves were the weakest species on earth, and Balrog’s walked the battlefield, there was another threat to middle earth. The first threat. Sauron’s old master.
When he was defeated, Sauron pretended to surrender, and the surviving Balrog’s were lost deep below the earth, and all of the powerful species that won that war, left to rejoin god, leaving the elves as the now most powerful species in all the lands.
This great battle marked the end of the first age, and the beginning of the second age.
And then, long after the actions of his former master had been forgotten to myth by most of the free people’s of middle earth, Sauron chose to strike, which was the battle we saw at the start of the first movie.
That battle was what ended the second age, and began the third age, which is what the characters are currently living in. And the god of LOTR, knowing that Sauron had not been fully defeated, sent five angels in the form of wizards, to help combat the return of the second dark lord. The two blue wizards who are never named in the books, nor are we given specifics as to what their task was, the brown wizard who was to protect the plant and animal life of middle earth and who played a major role in the hobbit book and was actually the one who sent the eagle that freed Gandalf from the tower (but got lost on his way to meet with Gandalf and is never heard from again, his fate left up in the air), the gray wizard Gandalf, who was to watch over all the free people of middle earth, and the white wizard Saruman, who was to watch over the other wizards, and the Magics of the lands. Of course, the white wizard fell from his purpose, and God promoted Gandalf to his former position.
So yeah. As much as Sauron is legitimately a major threat, and could destroy the world, he’s literally just the nerfed former henchman of the first major threat this world saw. A threat so dangerous, that even the slain spirits of his enemies are unable to move to the afterlife, and are tragically tied to the land they were slain in.

    • @Laxhoop

The movie never says what battle it was, leaving the movie-only audience members to infer that it must have been one of the battles against Sauron, but no, those bodies are from long before that.
If the wizards and Balrogs of LOTR are comparable to angels, then what Sauron was, was a principality, a much higher ranking angel, and his former master, the first threat to middle earth, was the great betrayer, the LOTR equivalent to Satan.
His defeat marked the end of the first age of middle earth, and Sauron’s marked the end of the second. That’s why it’s the third age in the story. And in fact, once Frodo and the elves leave, that marks the beginning of the fourth age.

The part about the dead marshes includes Legolas’s Father; Thranduil, & Thranduil’s father Oropher, were to join the Last Alliance in from a different angle to achieve a certain war tactic but Oropher and others got waylayed by orcs & many corrupted men which lead to eventually Oropher dying there, this loss effected Legolas’s father so very deeply forevermore. The bond between he and his son is the same bond Thranduil has with Legolas. And the braid he wears is to honour his grandfather. I believe after his death braids became less common. A sort of respect thing I believe. Both his father and Grandfather lived in Doriath(Elu Thingol’s domain[Elwë], which was heartbea of middle earth; Aside from Gondolin which held this mantle until it’s secret location was given up by a tortured elf who was the son of a very important mother who was the sister of the high king Turgon). All on a landmass called Beleriand that sunk under the sea after a set of disastrous events that lead to many greater outcomes much later on in the legendarium. This here is a whole set of stories of which also includes a quite a bit of Galadriel too but moreso other characters during this era. Of Beren And Lùthien comes to mind and Children Of Hurin!! You’ll fall in love even more after the third movie. Then you can enter into the lore videos like Moviejoob and OmarioRPG have done reaction videos too. Amazing stuff.
One thing to add though is this scene resembles a lot from the other battle Tolkien was involved in called The Battle Of Somme. Look into it and tell me your thoughts.

One of the aspects of Frodo's character that was very much played down is a certain amount of foresight. In the books, while he is stay with Tom Bombadil (another character cut from the book), he dreams seeing Gandalf pacing back and forth at the top of Orthanc while he is the prisoner there. He often dreams of hearing the ocean, which he has never seen in his waking life, and I cannot help but wondering if the opening scene with Gandalf fight the Balrog was a tribute to this little mentioned gift.
I'd also like to quickly address something I didn't see a comment on in the last video; the relationships between the hobbits. Due to the extended nature of most hobbit families, a lot of the population of certain areas are related to one another, just not in the sterotypical "Alabama" way. Frodo mother was a Took, a very large family that lived in an area of the Short called The Smials, which makes him a cousin to Pippin, and I believe his father (Bungo) was known to have some relations in the Brandybuck family, making him a Merry's cousin as well, though how close these relations are I cannot recall. Sam, meanwhile is the son of Bilbo's old gardener, Hamfast Gamgee, who lived next door to Bag End in Hobbiton. Frodo and his cousins used to visit Uncle Bilbo frequently, meaning they have all known each other most of their lives, which became more pronounced when Bilbo adopted Frodo after both of Frodo's parents died in a boating accident. Hobbits, being somewhat hierarchical in nature, will follow employer-employee relationships through generations; indeed Sam admit to Faramir he is already Frodo's gardener, rather than his bodyguard as initially believed. This is why, despite the long relationship, Sam almost always referred to Frodo as Mr Frodo, much as his father called Bilbo Mr Bilbo.

It's all rooted in the British class structure in the time Tolkien was born into. The Baggins were minor gentry and the Gamgees were servant class. Sam was based on a batman in the British Army in WWI,. Not Batman as in vigilante crime fighter but batman as in a British officer's Aide de Camp. He was his officer's manservant and the bond was often quite close.

This is one of the greatest stories ever told. The writer was a philologist, currently called a linguist I believe and created cultures, functional languages and a history that backs this story up that goes back thousands of years. He truly devoted his life to this story. Well, while he wasn’t busy being a professor or fighting in WW1. Dude was an intellectual beast and actually experienced a terrible war which is part of what makes this story so special in my humble opinion.✌🏼

Frodo couldn't put on the Ring at the Black Gate because in doing so, he would have drawn th Eye of Sauron on himself, and the Nazgul would have been immediately sent there to catch him. That will be even more true when they are in Mordor (now they're just on its borders).
And Gollum is really trying to help Frodo at first, but just in order to keep the Ring very far from Sauron; he was allowed to escape from Mordor, but he didn't know that, so he didn't know he was working for Sauron, in a sense.

Also I can see why you think Gandalf knows everything and is waiting for everyone to "figure it out", but he just is so old and wise he has a good feeling about Frodo and Sam. He's happy Sam went with him because the quest is so perilous and unlikely they destroy the ring without being killed. However he knows Hobbits, and is used to seeing people underestimate what they're capable of. Sauron doesn't know anything about Hobbits and doesn't see them as a threat.

This wasn't just a "promotion" for Gandalf, but really him coming into his destiny.
When the Meier were sent to Middle-Earth to aid against Sauron, Saruman was the first to volunteer and, as such, was made the head of the order. By comparison, Gandalf had to be persuaded to go. Nevertheless, one of the "gods" of Middle-Earth, Varda, said that she believed he was the "true" head of the Meier...a fact that made Saruman very jealous. She apparently wasn't alone, because when they arrived in Middle-Earth and Celeborn and Galadriel recognized them for what they were, they freely gave Gandalf one of the three elvish rings of power rather than Saruman. (It's not mentioned much in the original books or the movies, but Gandalf wields one of the elvish rings of power throughout the series. That's part of the reason he was able to assume command at Minas Tirith and why he was able to keep the men fighting in spite of Sauron's constant attempts to demoralize them with fear and despair.)
It's actually a mark of Gandalf's own personal growth at the Council of Elrond. Note that while Gandalf was reluctant to go to Middle-Earth to fight against Sauron, he was the first to volunteer to go with Frodo into Mordor.
Just as an aside...the fall into the lower depths of the Misty Mountains that Frodo witnessed really did happen. The Balrog's dark flame was extinguished and it attempted to flee. Gandalf had no choice but to follow after it to escape as it was the only creature that knew its way around the depths, and it was there that he passed by many of the "nameless things" of Middle-Earth that lived in its dark places (of which the Watcher in the Water was one...an abominable creature that owes loyalty neither to the Valar nor Sauron). He ended up having to pursue it for three full days before it finally emerged on one of the peaks...only for it to immediately ignite in fresh flame and spin on Gandalf to attack. As you saw, he did finally manage to kill it at the cost of his own life. (In fact, there is no record of anyone ever managing to kill a Balrog without dying in the process.) But he was sent back to Middle-Earth now as the greatest of the wizards.
You can just make it out in the clip from the film, but Gandalf was reborn nude and had only the elvish ring of power and his sword Glamdring the Foe Hammer (which, like Sting, was also an incredibly well-crafted blade), but he got a lift from another of the Great Eagles to Lothlorien. Unfortunately, although the rest of the Fellowship had been there for months, he happened to arrive just right after they left. Galadriel and the elves likewise supplied him (note how Gandalf's new staff has a sort of elvish tree vibe going on at its head) and he tried to catch up to them. And while he didn't finally manage to rejoin them until Aragorn, Gimli, and Legolas entered Fanghorn, he did manage to contribute just a bit before that. Note that although Frodo put on the Ring again to escape Boromir, Sauron didn't pinpoint his location like he had back in Bree. That was because Gandalf managed to hide him from his sight just in time.

  • @sophiejones3554
    @sophiejones3554 ปีที่แล้ว

6:48 yes. However, although Gollum doesn't realize this, the Ring also suggests this title for itself to it's bearers. Isildur wrote "it is precious to me" and Bilbo also calls it "my precious". This is perhaps because Sauron's original name, Mairon, means "precious, admirable one" (though this part is fan speculation, Tolkien never said this in so many words).

  • @anatos1722

Sooo Gandalf real name is Olonir and hes basically as old as time itself,he was created by literal God of this univers El Iluvatar, and Gandalf was one his nest Angels,Same as Sauron was created by Morgoth which is basically Angel as Gandalf only rebeled Angel sent to Middle Earth banished from "paradise" or in this case Western Lands where "Gods reside"
Thing is Gandalf is waaay more powerful than he is allowed to show to us,becuse God sent him to Aid man not to make defining diference, men must win with their courage and heart,Its a destiny thing "it must be as it will be"
So yes when Gandalf the Grey fell,"God" granted him return to the body of wizard Gandalf,to complete the task. Gandalf remembers well who he was is and will be,only Galadriel and Elrond "two elves from Rivendell" know who Gandalf really is,Also Saruman.
Its the best story of all time, especially the books. Movies are short in translation when u read the books.
P.S that why Sophie said "It seems thst Gandalf already knows everything" thats becuse he does, hes angel, old as time,he knows it all,but he fears Sauron and he knows race of man can die along with him if Sauron Wins.

Tolkien is def one of the best writers ever, the dude was in WW1. He had a magister exam in languages, he invented "Elvish" and the writing of it. Black speech, wich is the language the Orcs speaks , its not that much used in the movies but, except for Souron speaking it, and Gandalf, in the hobbit series they atleast speak some black speech Elvish is most simular to like Finish and a mix with other languages. Dark speech is closest to Hurrutic"Hurrian" or how u spell it, a language wich was used in like 2300BC , in the area wich today is like Syria .
Kinda random thing to comment however lol, just wanted to point out how awsome J.R.R Tolkien was.
Everone should try read the books, if anyone like to read books, the LOTR series will be just as awsome, or more awsome than the movies.

`looks like meat is back on the menu boys`
I`m struggling to think where an Uruk-Hai ever encountered a menu.
Are there Cafes and restaurants in Isengard.

Nicely done. There is so much good ambiguity in the story. You are leaning the kean sail, nicely done.
