A little comment on the asking for a hair thing:
Nowadays it sounds creepy, but since this world is inspired by epic sagas and poems and mythology from ancient and medieval ages, where soldiers going away on long missions asking for a maiden's or a wife's hair to remember them by and give them hope was a common thing, it makes a bit more sense. This was even a custom during the WW1, when the writer of the books had fought.
However it makes even more sense within the lore of the world, as Galadriel was one of the most ancient beings on Middle-Earth and her hair were the only thing remaining that had captured the light of The Undying Lands, the home of the gods back when she was young and was born there. Similar to the "light of Earendil, our most beloved star" that she gave to Frodo, no other light of its likeness could be found as it was destroyed ages ago.
Also, the dwarves and the Elves had huge grudges since ancient times and Galadriel had denied giving her hair to Elves in the past, so the fact that she could read hearts and minds and she decided to give some to Gimli, a dwarf, meant a lot not only for Gimli himself as a character, but also as a symbolic gesture towards the Dwarves, for bridging the gap between the two peoples.
You can see the smile Legolas has upon hearing this, as an Elf he realizes the symbolism, as well as Gimli's proof of character.

There was a time when humanity thought with much more than our penises. The fact that I have not yet seen a reactor not call the gift anything other than creepy is a testament to what we have lost and our single minded focus on sex. I would recommend to anyone who is interested, look up a video by Jonathan Pageau called the symbolism of hair. Great video on the noble and virtuous aspects of hair.

Galadriel's gift to Gimli has deeper meaning behind it, like most things in this movie & reflects the expanded lore of the middle earth universe. Galadriel is one of the 2-3 most powerful & wise elves remaining in Middle Earth since the time the land was young. She was born in a place called Valinor, or the Undying land... which is basically the place of residence of the Valar, the local pantheon, the local "gods" as you may call them. Back then, the world was not illuminated by the sun, the moon and the stars, but rather by 2 trees of gold and silver, Telperion and Laurëlin that lit the world before the sun & moon were born from their last flower and fruit as they were basically killed by Melkor. It is said that Galadriel's hair had somehow captured some of the shine of those two trees. Her uncle Fëanor, who was a great king of the Elven people & also arguably their greatest craftsman to ever live, asked/demanded that she give him a lock of hair, so that he could use it to fashion 3 gems that would shine of the same light as the trees. Sensing his pride & a shadow that wasn’t exactly belonging to him brewing from within, she refused his request 3 times. He stopped asking and made the gems anyway, managing to complete the task he had set for himself even without her hair. Around these 3 gems, the possession of which became the driving force for many of the great events in the world, entire wars that lasted for centuries exploded, & other events. The gems actively shaped the fate of the races of middle earth to the point that the aforementioned Valar got involved directly. During these times, events surrounding the gems brought about the traditional enmity between Dwarves and Elves... the same enmity that Gimli still feels towards them. That enmity however does not survive his encounter with the wise Galadriel, whom Gimli basically falls platonically in love with. By giving him 3 of her hair, Galadriel is opening a door, offering an olive branch that might one day close the gap that divides these two races. Legolas, himself being an Elven prince and centuries old, knows of the story through his father Thranduil & grandfather Oropher, as it shaped the lives of all Elves, and his subtle smile is possibly the first act of acknowledgment and reconciliation. it is also a way for Peter Jackson, the director of the film, to give a nod to all of the fans who know these facts and backstories... a way to make us feel seen, and to make us appreciate just how deeply the makers of the film respect the books and larger universe created by Tolkien.
The thing with the hair may seem weird, but there is a significance to it in real life as well as in the lore of the story. In real life, it was not uncommon for wives, fiancés, or even girlfriends to give their men (who were going off to war), a lock of their hair as a keepsake, particularly in WWI, which Tolkien fought in. The lore part of it comes into play in The Silmarillion, Tolkien's tales of the creation of Arda, the Undying Lands of Valinor, and Middle Earth. Galadriel is many, many thousands of years old, & was born in Valinor before the sun & moon were even created. At the time, the world was lit by two trees, one gold and one silver which would shine at different times from each other, but would shine together once a day when one would fade and the other brighten. Galadriel's hair was said to look like the light of the mingled light from the two trees, which may have inspired Feanor, a master craftsman and heir to the high king of the Noldor, to craft the Silmaril's which were three jewels that captured the light of the two trees, one golden light, one silver light, & one co-mingled light. Fëanor had a bit of a thing for Galadriel and begged her for her hair three different times, which she rejected because she could perceive the inner darkness of his heart and rejected him, which made them "un-friends" after that. There is a lot more to the lore than that, so this is the super crib-notes version. But the point is, it was VERY significant that she granted Gimli three of her hairs to a dwarf, when she would not to the son of her king many 10s of thousands of years ago of which she is related to all three kings who were brothers and Elu Thingol of Doriath was one of the brothers that didn’t stay in Valinor even though he was one of the elven ambassadors along with his three brothers and that king I mentioned was VERY close friends with Thingol)
ever wondered how old Galadriel is during the War of the Ring? I have looked in many different sources and depending on where you look, she’s anywhere from 17,000-20,000 years old. 6,000 seems too young as it would make her close in age to Elrond, who I know is much younger than her even though he’s 6000-8000 by the third age, which wouldn’t make sense for her at all even if she was (“690 years older” as some kept repeating on the internet making 6960!)As she was around long before Elrond was even born and time was experience differently to say the LEAST as there is a lot to go into on that subject lol.) She was born during the Years of the Trees & back then the years were something like 9X longer than a solar year so I understand the math is hard, especially since she isn’t given an exact birth year. But it is said that Finarfin, her father, was born in Y.T. 1230, so I would assume she was born sometime within 1000 years of then (being generous).
Basically, I’m wondering what the most accurate range is for her age during the events of Lord of the Rings. I’ll also add that Galadriel is was around before the ents even existed (of which Treebeard is 15,000 years old so she’s OLDER than Treebeard/Fangorn) or very close to when they were “created” by Yavannah and probably had much knowledge to do with such things and or direct knowledge of what happened. Probably through an early prototype of her mirror or simply another dream that made her long for middle earth all over again ontop of the yearning she already had to go there and explore. Nothing to do with Fëanor’s oath and all that jazz.
Just going from the Appendices (and maybe Silmarillion) she would have to be at least 9000+ years older than Elrond, Elrond was born near the end of the First Age, Galadriel was adult before the destruction of the Trees.
Actually, more than that: I just checked, and the Second Age ended in SA 3441. So an elf born literally at the end of the First Age (FA 590) is 3441+3018 = 6459 years old when Frodo leaves for Rivendell. Elrond was born in FA 532, so adds 58 years to get 6517. Elves are mature at 100, so Galadriel adds at leas 632 to Elrond's age, to be at least 7149, and possibly quite a bit more (as attested by other comments.)
One fic had Maglor(Elrond’s Adoptive Father, Maedhros was also adoptive father alongside Maglor, they were the eldest sons of Fëanor) - One fic had as much older than Galadriel; I wondered how we knew, and it was pointed out to me that Maglor was the second oldest son of the first son of Finwë, while Galadriel is the youngest child of the third son of Finwë. So, yeah.
Note that the second age was the LONGEST and again time was experienced very differently back then too aside from the internal clock of elves working very differently, she’s definitely older as far as the world and the other beings that age far faster around her.
I also remind you all that she’s older than the sun and the moon and witnessed and most likely even helped in the Valar’s crafting of the objects that held the last fruit and flower of the two trees of Valinor. Golden Tree Laurëlin’s Last Fruit and The Silver Tree Telperion’s Last Flower + dew She was the most involved with learning everything possible from them.
She’s 25th generation from Tata one of the elven forefathers to wake to the stars. Their birth was rather shrouded in mist. Only those of her grandfathers ilk have a chance of knowing the origins a bit better as they are closer to that culture that stemmed from the beginning.
The Years of the Trees were the second of the three great time periods in Arda that followed the Years of the Lamps and preceded the Years of the Sun&Moon. They were known to be comprised of several Ages and lasted in total around 1500 Valian Years or 14,373 solar years.
Time flowed differently back then and time flowed differently within them too for the elves live as long as the world does. Epic hey?❤❤
The Dúnedain said that Galadriel’s height was two rangar, or "man-high" - some 6 feet 4 inches (193 cm). However, Galadriel's most striking feature was her beautiful long silver-golden hair. The Elves of Tirion said it captured the radiance of the Two Trees Laurelin and Telperion themselves. Galadriel was said to be the tallest female in Middle Earth, at 6'4”. But then Thingol was the tallest elf ever to live, and he's estimated to be almost 9' (274 cm)
Thingol was also a very very prominent figure within the Silmarillion and other books. He’s the great ancestor of Elrond+Arwen and through Aragorn being directly but distantly related to Elronds Twin Brother Elros it makes him loosely connected to Thingol as well. Let’s just say he died a tragic death long long ago. I’m a continent that doesn’t exist anymore. The events I spoke of in my earlier story of Elrond about his fathers deeds, which lead to the Valar helping with putting a Stop to Morgoth for good so to say and that War Of Wrath lasted 80 years straight and it left the landmass torn asunder from the clash of gods and the holy host of Vanyar elves that were closest to the Valar than all other elves so you can imagine what a bunch of mighty elves men and Maiar fighting a bunch of fowl creatures and beings for 80 years would do to a continent. It all fell into the sea. Galadriel barely made it over the mountain before that part of the story officially broke out.

Its alluded to in some of the notes and appendices. Bilbo and after he leaves Frodo are the actual land owners for most of that section of Hobbiton. That's why the 'Sackville-Baggins' relatives are hounding him. They are a branch of the family that lost most of their wealth. In the book Bilbo gives the Sackville-Baggins matriarch his expensive silverware set because she already stole more than half of it. That and he came back loaded with treasure from his adventures in 'The Hobbit'. Merry and Pippin are both from lesser but similar wealth, but both are 'idle rich', their older brothers are primary heirs and hold all the responsibility. They both have an allowance but steal to support themselves when it runs out as they fritter it away on ale and pipe weed. Sam is the working class man of the land, and literally Frodo's gardener.

The song heard when the elves were spotted in the forest by Frodo&Sam near the beginning of the movie: here is the song the Elves were singing & chanting a very special Hymn along their journey:(With English translation)

    * le nallon sí di’nguruthos
“here overwhelmed in dread of Death I cry”
    * Á tiro nin, Fanuilos

(The elvish name given to Varda is Elbereth Gilthoniel is one of the main Valar who are of the main group of entities known as the Ainur who sang the world into being and helped shaped it further from within after some entered into the young world. She is most loved & honoured by the elves for many reasons)
It’s very important as regarding the elves history that spanned over 40,000+ years. Because even one of the three high kings within Valinor was 30,000 years old well before the third age. Galadriel is his granddaughter just do you know. Yeah. She’s very important throughout the entire histories. They are passing away with what’s left of their kin to the undying lands. Many thousands had their home in middle earth just like the high kings ancestors that woke to the stars. Their birth is shrouded in mist as is their entire existence itself. That in itself is a whole story. You’d love to react to the immersive and entertaining lore videos like moviejoob & OmarioRPG have done. It’s ever vast and rewarding to let touch your soul.❤❤❤❤
Varda is a Quenya name of Valarin origin meaning "Sublime", "Exalted" or "Lofty"
Elbereth is name given to her by the elves meaning ‘Star Lady’
    Gilthoniel essentially means Star Kindler
An original title of Varda, meaning 'the Kindler', and deriving from her making of the first faint stars in ancient times which was to light the dark world which had no sun yet and they loomed over the original Dark Lord (Fallen Valar named Morgoth by the elves) who he feared most above all even as supposedly he was the mightiest and first of all Ainur to ever exist (Ainur is the ultimate race of both Maiar and Valar)
When, long afterwards, she used the dews of Telperion(one of the two sacred trees that predated the Moon of which it birthed later on) to kindle brighter stars still, this surname seems to have fallen out of favour. After that time she was called instead Elentári, the Queen of the Stars.
(I didn’t see the scene in the reaction so I’m putting this here just in case since apparently others say it’s the EE))

The the extended (which you have wisely chosen to watch - don't think of it as a "directors cut" because it isn't, it's actually how the movies where supposed to be paced with the cinematic cut being was bowing to the fixed idea in the early 2000s that people can't sit through a long movie...) remedies some lack of detail in the cinematic cut and yes, Tom Bombadil isn't in the movies but he would have completely broken the pace and atmosphere of the first half of "Fellowship".
I also concur that having Aragorn be a tab bit (as in: a lot) less hyper self-assured initially is narrative wise a better choice, he could easily have been abysmally boring if he where the book Aragorn (which works well... *in the books* ).
And this is a rare trilogy that starts out strong and gets better with every instalment.
Oh and the Ring calls Aragorn "Elessar" which is a name in Quenya (the Elven "high Language", like Latin in our reality) the significance of it you might later pick up.
He's also not "just" *a* ranger, he's the Chieftain of the Dúnedain or Lord of the Dúnedain of Arnor, which means he's from the line of Kings of the fallen northern Kingdom, Gondor, from where Boromir is, being the southern kingdom of the Númenóreans (it's Rome after the Fall of the West in 476 with Gondor being The Eastern Empire, called Byzantium sometimes...), more on that will be revealed in the second movie as an almost throw-away conversation.

The song Aragorn sings has huge importance! Here is the full version: “The leaves were long, the grass was green, The hemlock-umbels tall and fair, And in the glade a light was seen; Of stars in shadow shimmering, Tinúviel was dancing there, To music of a pipe unseen
And light of stars was in her hair
    And in her raiment glimmering
There Beren came from mountains cold; And lost he wandered under leaves; And where the Elven-river rolled. He walked alone and sorrowing. He peered between the hemlock-leaves; And saw in wonder flowers of gold
Upon her mantle and her sleeves
And her hair like shadow following
    Enchantment healed his weary feet
That over hills were doomed to roam
And forth he hastened, strong and fleet
    And grasped at moonbeams glistening
    Through woven woods in Elvenhome
She lightly fled on dancing feet
And left him lonely still to roam
    In the silent forest listening
He heard there oft the flying sound
Of feet as light as linden-leaves
    Or music welling underground
    In hidden hollows quavering
    Now withered lay the hemlock-sheaves
And one by one with sighing sound
    Whispering fell the beachen leaves
    In the wintry woodland wavering
He sought her ever, wandering far
Where leaves of years were thickly strewn
By light of moon and ray of star
    In frosty heavens shivering
Her mantle glinted in the moon
As on a hill-top high and far
She danced, and at her feet was strewn
    A mist of silver quivering
When winter passed, she came again
And her song released the sudden spring
Like rising lark, and falling rain
    And melting water bubbling
    He saw the elven-flowers spring
About her feet, and healed again
He longed by her to dance and sing
    Upon the grass untroubling
Again she fled, but swift he came
    Tinúviel! Tinúviel!
He called her by her elvish name
    And there she halted listening
One moment stood she, and a spell
His voice laid on her: Beren came
    And doom fell on Tinúviel
That in his arms lay glistening
As Beren looked into her eyes
Within the shadows of her hair
The trembling starlight of the skies
    He saw there mirrored shimmering
    Tinúviel the elven-fair
    Immortal maiden elven-wise
About him cast her shadowy hair
    And arms like silver glimmering
Long was the way that fate them bore
O'er stony mountains cold and grey
Through halls of ireon and darkling door
    And woods of nightshade morrowless
The Sundering Seas between them lay
And yet at last they met once more
And long ago they passed away
    In the forest singing sorrowless
The true elvish version is far greater and so full of nuanced sadness that’s break the hearts of mortals from its beauty and sadness so the true song has been sort of taboo and the mannish tongues that retell it is stated to only be a shadow beneath the tree of the true story!

Tolkien was a veteran of the First World War and many other battles such as The Battle Of Somme etc. his works of art were to give back to the England as a form of restoring lost mythologies that he himself was a master of since he was a top professor of philology at Oxford. He did ALOT of his writing while in the trenches during small “breaks” while down in those trench forts built into the ground. And while he eldest son was in the Second World War; his Lord Of The Rings writings was strictly created above all else to give his eldest something to read while stationed wherever he was stationed. I forgot that part. They sent letters back and forth about it all the time. He was also the one and only son that actually protected his fathers legacy and work. A lot of his other work were put together BY his son after his father passed away. It’s well worth to react to the documentary behind the scenes film the director and crew and cast created together as well as the interview with the son Christopher Tolkien who you get to sort of enjoy a nice indoor and outdoor chat for like what came to about 1-2 hours of wonderful footage from an era that really must not be forgotten.
His work shed a light on things like The Finnish Kalevala, Norwegian Elder Edda, The Welsh Mabinogion, The Norwegian Nibelungen, The Indian Bhagvagita & Several Irish Folklore + other Cultural things! The man also restored and translated ancient relics for the governments as one everyone trusted. Much of what’s in our dictionary come from his efforts as well.
Anytime he spoke or even posted a comment into the paper as an editorial or response to certain issues as a very involved man for the world and the environment everyone turned their head to listen to him as everyone knew his worth and respected him greatly. His works show how NOT to glorify war; shows in the films if you pay close attention while watching the next films. Sharing what you know now via the after thoughts at the end of the second film! Remember. Extended edition. There is a lot missed out on especially in the second movie regarding Boromir backstory which there is much more in the books but the films WANTED to keep lore by the cinemas literally harangued him into making a “theatrical cut” which is why you have two versions. The real version and the “theatrical cut”. It was all to make more money for the company that is the theatres/cinemas. To get more showings in per day during the year. And believe me. People were camping outside and travelling the country to watch it MORE THAN ONCE.
His creations literally lead to inspiring the most currently famous books games & movies we all literally wouldn’t have enjoyed and be touched to our souls core without him and his spiritually connected brilliance. That and he was a philologist professor at Oxford first and foremost which covers so many things. Not just linguistic. The man was a true genius and Jack of all trades but ultimately LOVED the simple life.

The song Aragorn sings to the hobbits is the Lay of Luthien, an elvish princess who falls in love with a mortal man, Beren, and rescues him from the evil dungeon of Morgoth. She gave up her immortality to be with him. Arwen and Aragron are reliving part of that story. On the grvestone of JRR Tolkien and his wife Edith are the names Beren and Luthien. F/YI, the elves call death the gift of men, because humans die and then spend eternity with Eru Illuvatar, the One Father, whereas elves live forever in a beautiful sameness.

The elven rings could be used without issue as long as Sauron wasn’t wearing his ring. The ring bearers of those three were Elrond, Galadriel and Gandalf, Gandalf was given it over Saruman when they first came to middle earth which was part of the resentment Saruman felt, plus he was angry that a council Galadriel formed to watch over middle earth she wanted Gandalf to head despite Saruman being the higher wizard (wizard colors determined power with Saruman being the stronger in white, then grey and somewhere after its blue and brown)
So for the three elven ring bearers to take the one ring it could use those and all three were immensely powerful already so it’d be very bad

It is an amazing Trilogy. No matter how detailed the Movies and extended editions are the lore is so rich that very little of it made it to the big screen. Regarding the prologue and the rings: Sauron's plan was to forge rings of power that would give their wilder amazing powers and turning them into great sorcerers and kings but would be under Sauron's will who would rule from the shadows. Sauron deceived the Elfs into helping him forge the rings of power: 9 for Men 7 for Dwarfs and then Sauron made the One ring to rule them all, however the Elf Celebrimbor forged the 3 Elvish rings without Sauron's presence and corruption making them unique in the way that they are good and benevolent and help others not just the person holding them. They are also unique in the sense that they are subject to "The One Ring" but not Sauron himself. This means that unless Sauron puts on The One Ring these 3 rings are the most powerful in existence.
The 3 Elvish rings are not explored in the movies but they are an integral part of the lore and story so here is a little info on them that is not directly explained in the movies to help you have a grasp of what is going on offscreen. Their powers are not fully explained but what is know is:
Vilya: The ring of Air. Elrond has this ring and with it he was able to heal Frodo from the Nazgul wound something that is normally impossible. It was also the ring of Air (Maybe with the assistance of Gandalf) that made the river wash out the Nazgul.
Nenya: The ring of Water. Galadriel has this ring and with it she protects her kingdom from everything including time itself. This is why it is a very tough choice for her to help Frodo because if "The One Ring" is destroyed her ring will lose it's power and her kingdom will diminish and fall into history.
Narya: The ring of Fire. Gandalf has this ring. With it he is able to do the Fireworks and probably helped him with his fight with the Balrog. Another quality of this ring is it affects the people around it by increasing their courage, bravery and making them resist corruption. That is one of the reasons why Gandalf's presence was so inspiring and why despair took over the fellowship when he fell.
P.S. Isildur was actually much wiser and more noble in the books. They never were with Elrond in the pits of mount Doom for him to change his mind and keep the ring. Elrond merely SUGGESTED it was destroyed but Isildur asked to keep the ring as compensation for losing his father and brother in the battle. At the time nobody knew what it would mean if the ring is allowed to endure so Elrond AGREED and let him keep the ring. After some time Isildur realized the ring was starting to take over him and even though he had shown great resistance to it he had the foresight and modesty to realize he cannot fully control it. He was on his way to give the ring to Elrond for safe keeping when he was ambushed and killed by orcs. In the books Aragorn is not only not ashamed but actually quite proud to be Isildur's heir and screams his name as a battle cry when charging into battle.

I’ll add to this: All 16 rings were meant to go to the elves (300-500years world of infiltration & deception down to the drain) but Mairon of the Maiar(primordial angelic beings in simple terms as they are sort of beyond angels) disguised as a high elf named Annatar when he came to the elves pretending to be an emissary from Valinor on behalf of the Valar so it makes sense how alluring the ring is and how strong it’s pull on people is. (A bit too instant in the movies though) Galadriel soon saw right through him and especially when after speaking with him regarding not remembering him when in Valinor long ago where she learned from all the Valar thanks to being dominantly Vanyar/Teleri side over her Ñoldorin side where she gleaned from that encounter that she did not study under Aulë the Vala with any elf named Annatar ! But later named Sauron by the elves meaning deceiver! After all of this, The three elven rings were made in secret without Saurons touch upon them thanks to Celebrimbor! Remember Gandalf before he became Gandalf was the same species of entity Sauron used to be!! Wow hey? The Rings, in this case, would have lost their powers eventually due to the lack of the One Ring and possibly because they were designed to defeat evil, and evil, in the form of Sauron, had been defeated. The Three Elven Rings served their purpose for a long time. Two out of three of them had several different bearers Unlike the other Rings, the main purpose of the Three is to "heal and preserve", as when Galadriel used Nenya to preserve her realm of Lothlórien over long periods. The Elves made the Three Rings to try to halt the passage of time, or as Tolkien had Elrond say, "to preserve all things unstained". I can expand upon this based on any further statements & questions you have for me as a reply to this comment ! ❤
There is problem here with the Rings, the Three were supposed to be never touched by Sauron and that's why they were not corrupting…Sauron had not taken part in their making which made the Three more 'pure' unsullied by his dark power, unlike the Nine and Seven Rings! But Sauron in the show touched the very material they were made of!!! So technically he could have tainted them and corrupted!
Even appendices of Lot tell us the order of making the rings, so they didn't even need the righs to more detailed writings in UT or Silmarillion:
      1200
Sauron endeavours to seduce the Eldar. Gil-galad refuses to treat with him; but the smiths of Eregion are won over. The Númenoreans begin to make permanent havens.
      c. 1500
      The Elven-smiths instructed by
Sauron reach the height of their skill.
They begin the forging of the Rings of Power.
      c. 1590
The Three Rings are completed in Eregion.
      c. 1600
Sauron forges the One Ring in
Orodruin. He completes the Barad-dûr. Celebrimbor perceives the designs of Sauron.
      1693
War of the Elves & Sauron begins.
      The Three Rings are hidden."
'Did you not hear me, Gloin?' said Elrond. 'The Three were not made by Sauron, nor did he ever touch them.
But of them it is not permitted to speak. So much only in this hour of doubt I may now say. They are not idle. But they were not made as weapons of war or conquest: that is not their power. Those who made them did not desire strength or domination or hoarded wealth, but understanding, making, and healing, to preserve all things unstained.
These things the Elves of Middle-earth have in some measure gained, though with sorrow. But all that has been wrought by those who wield the Three will turn to their undoing, and their minds and hearts will become revealed to Sauron, if he regains the One."
The One Ring’s power over people explained here:As for the rings given to these groups:They were all meant to go to the elves but Mairon of the Maiar disguised as a high elf named Annatar when he came to the elves pretending to be an emissary from Valinor on behalf of the Valar so it makes sense how alluring the ring is and how strong it’s pull on people is. Extended scenes at risk of being missed: 1• Frodo and Sam's first meeting with the elves, providing context for Valinor and the elves journey there, as referenced throughout the films and seen at the end of the Return of the King(connects to the passing of the elves in the beginning of their leaving the shire when Frodo and Sam are near the Old Forest by the Shire which leads them to eventually bumping into Merry And Pippin!
(An epic scene with Gandalf in Rivendell was also removed as well.)
    2. Aragorn singing the Lay of Luthien, providing a parallel between the events of the Beren and Luthien and Aragorn's relationship with Arwen of which every reactor channel I’ve seen makes the connection and it pulls them into a deeper understanding of their relationship every single time.
    3. Aragorn kneeling at his mother's grave, giving him some additional backstory for the viewer.
    4. Gandalf explaining to Frodo about the corruptive power of the Ring, and how it will strain the Fellowship from the inside, foreshadowing Boromir's downfall.
    5. Sam singing a lament for Gandalf, providing more emotional weight to Gandalf's death, referencing the start of the movie and strengthening the connection between him and the Hobbits ( also highlights Tolkien's love of song and poetry in the books).
    6. Galadriel giving the gifts to the Fellowship, providing context for their appearance in later films, as well as drawing a parallel between Gimli's gift and the events of the Silmarillion (Fëanor & Galadriel).
That’s just the beginning. Including several removed scenes between Aragorn & Galadriel and Aragorn with her husband Celeborn!
7• also the opening explaining Hobbits & their culture to the viewers, so they have a better understanding of these peoples we will be following which also was the direct full chapter called Concerning Hobbits.

It gave the wrong message and was not needed as it lead some reactors to be like “so creepy lol” which diminishes how much farther that well done scene could have gone especially in the extended to do it properly as in the books that latex it out perfectly.: •[Frodo] stepped back shaking all over & looked at the Lady. “I know what it was that you last saw”, she said; 'for that is also in my mind. Do not be afraid! But do not think that only by singing amid the trees, nor even by the slender arrows of elven-bows, is this land of Lothlórien maintained and defended against its Enemy. I say to you, Frodo, that even as I speak to you, I perceive the Dark Lord and know his mind, or all of his mind that concerns the Elves. And he gropes ever to see me and my thought. But still the door is closed!'
She lifted up her white arms, and spread out her hands towards the East in a gesture of rejection and denial. Eärendil, the Evening Star, most beloved of the Elves, shone clear above. So bright was it that the figure of the Elven-lady cast a dim shadow on the ground. Its rays glanced upon a ring about her finger; it glittered like polished gold overlaid with silver light, and a white stone in it twinkled as if the Evenstar had come down to rest upon her hand. Frodo gazed at the ring with awe; for suddenly it seemed to him that he understood.
'Yes,' she said, divining his thought, 'it is not permitted to speak of it, and Elrond could not do so. But it cannot be hidden from the Ring-bearer, and one who has seen the Eye. Verily it is in the land of Lórien upon the finger of Galadriel that one of the Three remains. This is Nenya, the Ring of Adamant, and I am its keeper.
'He suspects, but he does not know - not yet. Do you not see now wherefore your coming is to us as the footstep of Doom? For if you fail, then we are laid bare to the Enemy. Yet if you succeed, then our power is diminished, and Lothlórien will fade, and the tides of Time will sweep it away. We must depart into the West, or dwindle to a rustic folk of dell and cave, slowly to forget and to be forgotten.'
Frodo bent his head. 'And what do you wish?' he said at last.
'That what should be shall be,' she answered. 'The love of the Elves for their land and their works is deeper than the deeps of the Sea, and their regret is undying and cannot ever wholly be assuaged. Yet they will cast all away rather than submit to Sauron: for they know him now. For the fate of Lothlórien you are not answerable but only for the doing of your own task. Yet I could wish, were it of any avail, that the One Ring had never been wrought, or had remained for ever lost.'
'You are wise and fearless and fair, Lady Galadriel,' said Frodo. 'I will give you the One Ring, if you ask for it. It is too great a matter for me.'
Galadriel laughed with a sudden clear laugh. 'Wise the Lady Galadriel may be,' she said, 'yet here she has met her match in courtesy. Gently are you revenged for my testing of your heart at our first meeting. You begin to see with a keen eye. I do not deny that my heart has greatly desired to ask what you offer. For many long years I had pondered what I might do, should the Great Ring come into my hands, and behold! it was brought within my grasp. The evil that was devised long ago works on in many ways, whether Sauron himself stands or falls. Would not that have been a noble deed to set to the credit of his Ring, if I had taken it by force or fear from my guest?
'And now at last it comes. You will give me the Ring freely! In place of the Dark Lord you will set up a Queen. And I shall not be dark, but beautiful and terrible as the Morning and the Night! Fair as the Sea and the Sun and the Snow upon the Mountain! Dreadful as the Storm and the Lightning! Stronger than the foundations of the earth. All shall love me and despair!'
She lifted up her hand and from the ring that she wore there issued a great light that illuminated her alone and left all else dark. She stood before Frodo seeming now tall beyond measurement, and beautiful beyond enduring, terrible and worshipful. Then she let her hand fall, and the light faded, and suddenly she laughed again, and lo! she was shrunken: a slender elf-woman, clad in simple white, whose gentle voice was soft and sad.
'I pass the test,' she said. 'I will diminish, and go into the West and remain Galadriel.'
They stood for a long while in silence. At length the Lady spoke again. 'Let us return!' she said. 'In the morning you must depart for now we have chosen, and the tides of fate are flowing.'
'I would ask one thing before we go,' said Frodo, 'a thing which I often meant to ask Gandalf in Rivendell. I am permitted to wear the One Ring: why cannot I see all the others and know the thoughts of those that wear them?'
'You have not tried,' she said. 'Only thrice have you set the Ring upon your finger since you knew what you possessed. Do not try! It would destroy you. Did not Gandalf tell you that the rings give power according to the measure of each possessor? Before you could use that power you would need to become far stronger, and to train your will to the domination of others. Yet even so, as Ring-bearer and as one that has borne it on finger and seen that which is hidden, your sight has grown keener. You have perceived my thought more clearly than many that are accounted wise. You saw the Eye of him that holds the Seven and the Nine. And did you not see and recognize the ring upon my finger? Did you see my ring?' she asked turning again to Sam.
'No, Lady,' he answered. 'To tell you the truth, I wondered what you were talking about. I saw a star through your finger. But if you'll pardon my speaking out, I think my master was right. I wish you'd take his Ring. You'd put things to rights. You'd stop them digging up the gaffer and turning him adrift. You'd make some folk pay for their dirty work.'
'I would,' she said. 'That is how it would begin. But it would not stop with that, alas! We will not speak more of it. Let us go!'
When] at last all that [Galadriel] had desired in her youth came to her hand, the Ring of Power and the peaceful rule of Middle-earth which she had dreamed... her wisdom was full grown and she rejected it....
Meaning definitely by now it’s become trivial to her. Even back in the day he couldn’t find her or pierce her mind and whenever he went looking for her presence he boils t find her ALL AT THE SAME TIME AS HER BEING ABLE TO READ HIS OWN MIND WITHOUT HIM KNOWING! Often times even from a great distance. That’s power. Just one calm look from her is all it takes to send even the Nazgûl run away from her. They even avoid her realm entirely both because of its own power as well as they know exactly who she is and her exact lineage through themselves being very old. 4000+years old. Especially the WitchKing(head Nazgûl). Remember Númenorean men are not like other average men. They were known to be rather superhuman & very tall. Between 6-8 feet.

The short story on the elvish poem Strider/Aragorn sings.
There is a tale of a mortal man Beren from a noble house and he is war wearied and wandering when he comes upon an elven maid dancing and singing in a glen. Luthien whom he calls Tinuviel an elven word for nightingale. He falls for her but her father sets him an impossible task to win her hand. Not going into details but they end up facing some of the same dark powers as the fellowship. They have children before more sorrows. Aragorn relates to the story with his relationship with Arwen.
Beren is a great ancestor to Aragorn. And Arwen is said to have beauty in likeness to Luthien.
Also an interesting back note to the Beren and Luthien story is that the characters are inspired from Tolkien’s own life. His wife Edith once danced for him in the forest grounds when he was at one of the war hospitals. And on their graves Tolkien has Beren and Luthien inscribed upon his wish. They had a whole romance too.
As for the beauty of the different realms, the New Zealand landscape adds a lot! But so does the art. John Howe and Alan Lee used to do art on old Tolkien calendars and other things back probably in the 70s and 80s. They were hired to work on this movie. Some of the scenes in the shire reflect paintings…especially Gandalf with Frodo and Bilbo against that background.
And again the art with Rivendell and Lothlorien the two elven kingdoms…it’s long but in the behind the scenes they show the two artists and how small models were made from their designs and how that was translated to the screen. Sometimes one artist would do one thing and one another and sometimes they worked together. And it is quite beautiful!
I really loved watching your reactions! Your empathy for Frodo
your attention to details. This was very enjoyable!
Yes I love Sam too! loyal and true. He has a big heart.
I’m getting ready to watch your take on Two Towers! Even though I say “Beren is a “mortal” man, he has a heritage a little more than a normal man. You probably can guess this if you saw Two Towers since Aragorn is More than as well…:-)

The most powerful elf in the first age asked for a strand of Galadriels hair once because he could create Silmarils with them, diamond-like jewels with powers of temptation similar to the Ring. But Galadriel denied him because she could see the greed in his heart. Therefore it's a pretty big deal for Gimli to get three strands of hair. The Silmarils basically caused all the trouble back in the day since even the gods(specifically the bad one) desired them. No smith exists anymore that can create Silmarils out of Galadriels hair as far as we know, but the gesture is pretty important.

Bilbo Walking Song: Roads go ever ever on, Over rock and under tree, By caves where never sun has shone, By streams that never find the sea; Over snow by winter sown,
And through the merry flowers of June,
    Over grass and over stone,
And under mountains in the moon.
    Roads go ever ever on
    Under cloud and under star,
Yet feet that wandering have gone
Turn at last to home afar.
Eyes that fire and sword have seen
And horror in the halls of stone
Look at last on meadows green
And trees and hills they long have known
The original version of the song is recited by Bilbo in the last chapter of The Hobbit, at the end of his journey back to the Shire. Coming to the top of a rise he sees his home in the distance, and stops and essentially sings what I shared above!
There are three versions of this walking song in The Lord of the Rings.
The first is sung by Bilbo when he leaves the Shire and is setting off to visit Rivendell:
The Road goes ever on and on,
Down from the door where it began.
Now far ahead the Road has gone,
And I must follow, if I can,
    Pursuing it with eager feet,
Until it joins some larger way
Where many paths and errands meet.
And whither then? I cannot say.
The second version is identical except for changing the word "eager" to "weary" in the fifth line. It is spoken aloud, slowly, by Frodo, as he and his companions pause on their way to Crickhollow, looking beyond to lands that some of them have never seen before.
The third version is spoken by Bilbo in Rivendell after the hobbits have returned from their journey. Bilbo is now an old, sleepy hobbit, who murmurs the verse and then falls asleep.
The Road goes ever on and on
Out from the door where it began.
Now far ahead the Road has gone,
Let others follow it who can!
Let them a journey new begin,
But I at last with weary feet
Will turn towards the lighted inn,
My evening-rest and sleep to meet.
1977: The Hobbit (1977 film): Sections of the poem are sung during the trip through Mirkwood. It appears on the soundtrack titled "Roads".
1980: The Return of the King (1980 film):
A song inspired by the poem is sung at the end of the film called "Roads Go Ever, Ever On".
1981: The Lord of the Rings (1981 radio series):
Bilbo sings the song as he leaves Bag End. It is sung by John Le Mesurier to a tune by Stephen Oliver.
    1997: An Evening in Rivendell:
The Tolkien Ensemble adapted an original melody to the song, composed by Caspar Reiff.
2001: The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring:
Parts of the song are sung by Gandalf in his first appearance, and also by Bilbo as he leaves Bag End.
2006: The Lord of the Rings Musical:
The poem is the basis of the song "The Road Goes On" sung by Sam, Frodo, Merry, and Pippin in the first act.
2014: The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies:
Lines of the poem partially make up the lyrics of The Last Goodbye, performed by Billy Boyd(Pippin) for the credits of the film.

The reason that Arwen is glowing is, because Frodo is passing into the Shadow world. Regular people has no reflection in the Shadow world, but the Elves that has lived in Valinor has glowing presence in the shadowworld. Actually, in the books, Arwen never lived in Valinor, but never mind that :) Among all the elves that are still in middle-earth, at the time of this story, only Galadriel and Glorfindel are old enough to have lived in Valinor. Arwen is replacing Glorfindels role from the books, so it makes sense.

Giving respect to someone that you respect shows that you respect them. Its not so much about class. I respect anyone that I consider wiser than myself. I respect people older than myself. I respect veterans who fought in war. I respect anyone that would put their own life in danger to protect a complete stranger. We are not all equal. Give respect where respect is due. Sam respects Frodo because Frodo is his employer and is kind and intelligent. Recognising and respecting traits in another is wisdom in itself.

You can think about the ring in many ways, but one way is to think about it as an addiction. The longer you use, the stronger it gets. When Bilbo dropped the ring to the floor, he did what most people couldn't....he got off the habit cold turkey. Oh, and Sam calls Frodo "Mr. Frodo" because Sam's Bilbo's (and Frodo's) gardener. There's a class difference, so Sam uses a term of respect for Frodo.

    • @blackeyedlily

I’m always telling people to think about the ring as something like an addiction. Especially when people begin to do irrational things because of it. I will often see people reacting to these films, for the first time, become very puzzled by some of the actions of certain individuals. But when you look at those actions through the lens of addiction, they make total sense. People will do things that go against their own best interests and go against common sense in defense of an addiction. And the ring causes similar behavior. I’m trying to keep this vague enough enough so that it doesn’t give any kind of clue about what’s to come in the story.

The Gandalf locked in the Tower bit is explained ONLY in the Unfinished Tales Book: In [manuscript] C The Black Riders arrived at the Gate of Isengard while Gandalf was still a prisoner in the tower. In this account, Saruman, in fear & despair, & perceiving the full horror of service to Mordor, resolved suddenly to yield to Gandalf, & to beg for his pardon & help. Temporizing at the Gate, he admitted that he had Gandalf within, & said that he would go & try to discover what he knew; if that were unavailing, he would deliver Gandalf up to them. Then Saruman hastened to the summit of Orthanc - & found Gandalf gone. Away south against the setting moon he saw a great Eagle flying towards Edoras.
See, the thing is he was always master of studying the enemy & even being able to think like they do to always know exactly the best ways to handle ever situation and so on, but the thing is he didn't just become the enemy, he at this time in a sense for once actually grew afraid of him, probably Sauron did what Sauron did with Finrod Felagund(Galadriel’s elder brother who by the way was the most important in the Legendarium and is the main reason the third age even exists) which basically widdled Saruman with various visions of the past and future until it wore him down.

The elvish songs of lamentation were for Gandalf when they arrived in Lothlórien. So the song you hear is literally for him whilst being a theme for the movie itself. The only excerpt from these songs is "Mithrandir, Mithrandir, O Pilgrim Grey!"
This was expanded & set to music by Philippa Boyens & Howard Shore, respectively, for The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring. It was sung in the said film by Elizabeth Fraser in the track Lothlórien. Notable about this song is that it assumes that the elves of Lothlórien were aware that Gandalf was an incarnate Maia. This is debatable. As well, the lyrics ask "What drove you to leave/That which you loved?". This suggests that Gandalf was well aware that he would fall in Moria. Other debatable verses include the claims that Gandalf was the wisest of the Maiar, and that with him the Flame of Anor would leave the world (assuming that it and he were one, or he was the only wielder of the Flame).
    (English comes after the Quenya)
    * The first part is in Quenya:
    A Olórin i yáresse
    Mentaner i Númenherui
    Tírien i Rómenóri
    Maiaron i Oiosaila
    Manan elye etevanne
    Nórie i melanelye?
The Second part is in Sindarin:
    Mithrandir, Mithrandir, A Randir Vithren
    ú-reniathach i amar galen
I reniad lín ne mór, nuithannen
In gwidh ristennin, i fae narchannen
I lach Anor ed ardhon gwannen
    Caled veleg, ethuiannen.
    * Olórin, who once was...
Sent by the Lords of the West
To guard the lands of the East
    Wisest of all Maiar
    What drove you to leave
    That which you loved?
    Mithrandir, Mithrandir O Pilgrim Grey
No more will you wander the green fields of this earth
Your journey has ended in darkness.
The bonds cut, the spirit broken
The Flame of Anor has left this World
    A great light, extinguished.

You’ll love the full scene with Frodo+Sam &Galadriel the great Peter Jackson & team didn’t seem to include.. which all this little stuff lead to that scene in the movies which gave it more meaning; & the”one who has seen the eye” thing was a mistake by the team.

A beautiful passage from the book to share! I realize that most of the people who react to these movies for the first time are not going to follow up by reading the novels they are based on. But I always appreciate how much people share various parts of the lore with them, so the at least they get a sense of the depth and beauty of the story in the novels.

Firstly: All 16 rings were meant to go to the elves (300-500years world of infiltration & deception down to the drain) but Mairon of the Maiar(primordial angelic beings in simple terms as they are sort of beyond angels) disguised as a high elf named Annatar when he came to the elves pretending to be an emissary from Valinor on behalf of the Valar so it makes sense how alluring the ring is and how strong it’s pull on people is.
Boromir’s sword is my favorite. A hand-and-a-half Type XIV, great for stabbing without sacrificing cutting power. Basically a medieval version of a Gladius combined with a Viking Age Saxon sword; the Saxons having been fond of curved handguards. Perfect companion to a center-grip round shield. Too bad he didn’t have it in his last battle.
Going without a shield gives you much less protection and makes it hard to identify you from friend or foe in large scale combat. However, going without a shield also gives you a lot more freedom of movement, perfect for war-band skirmishes and individual fighting. If not for the archers, Boromir probably would’ve won, or at least held out until help arrived. The Orcs were strong, but untrained and wearing low-quality plate armor of quick mass production.
Sean Bean, who played Boromir and Ned Stark, is very comfortable in Medieval type films. He plays a fearsome crusading knight in Black Death, taking place in Germany during The Bubonic Plague. Certainly not of the same caliber as LOTR or GOT, but a creative movie nevertheless.

55:51 Her (Galadriel) mother-name was Nerwen and she grew to be tall beyond the measure even of the women of the Noldor; she was strong of body, mind, and will, a match for both the loremasters and the athletes of the Eldar in the days of their youth. Even among the Eldar she was accounted beautiful, and her hair was held a marvel unmatched. It was golden like the hair of her father and of her foremother Indis, but richer and more radiant, for its gold was touched by some memory of the starlike silver of her mother, and the Eldar said that the light of the Two Trees, Laurelin and Telperion, had been snared in her tresses. Many thought that this saying first gave to Feanor the thought of imprisoning and blending the light of the Trees that later took ship in his hands as the Silmarils. For Feanor beheld the hair of Galadriel with wonder and delight. He begged three times for a tress, but Galadriel would not give him even one hair. These two kinsfolk, the greatest of the Eldar of Valinor, were unfriends forever.

Enjoyed watching the movie with you! Looks like your other viewers addressed most of your questions already (I was on vacation when you posted, so I'm late to the party!), but one point you might be wondering about is why Frodo kept the Ring on after escaping from Boromir. The fight with the Orcs occurred on Amon Hen, the Hill of the Eye. The great seat on top of the hill (represented in the movie by a throne made of four eagles) sometimes granted visions to a viewer who sat in the seat. In the book, Frodo wearing the Ring sees all of Middle-earth swarming with Orcs and other servants of Sauron, from the far North clear to Ethir Anduin, the delta of the Great River in the South. His view is finally drawn to Mordor and the Barad-Dur, Sauron's great fortress. And there is the Eye, searching for him! Sauron's efforts are opposed by another Power from another source, and Frodo removes the Ring just in time to escape. The breaking of the Fellowship is one scene that I think works better in the movie than in the book. In Tolkien's version, poor Aragorn is always in the wrong place at the wrong time. He finally leaps to the top of Amon Hen, but looking from the seat, he sees nothing.

Arwen and Aragorn makes more sense than if it were any other as Elrond is half human, he had a Twinbrother Elros who choose to be human and he was the first king of Numenor. Because Elrond is half elf he could choose to be elf or man and Arwen is given the same choice.
Also about Sauron, he isnt actually an eye. In the movies it is implied he doesnt have a physical form since he lost the ring but he does. In the books Pippin sees him and Golum talks about him like he has met him which he probably did when he was being tortured for the info that led the Nazgul to the Shire.

Legolas knows all the elven legends, so when Gimli says about the strand of hair and she gave him 3, Legolas knows its the most special of gifts and Gimlis heart is true.. (read up about Fëanor asking thousands of years before for three strands of her hair and her refusal)
