“아름다운 소리란 무엇일까?” 주정현과 송지윤 그리고 레이첼의 ‘Unbeautified’ 해금 연주자이자 작곡가, 그리고 즉흥 연주자인 주정현은 서울과 로스앤젤레스를 오가며 활동하는 아티스트입니다. 10살 때부터 해금, 즉 한국 전통의 두 줄 바이올린을 연주하며,클래식 음악을 기반으로 깊이 있는 훈련을 받았습니다. 그러나 그녀의 음악 여정은 단순한 전통에 머무르지 않았습니다. 학부 시절 즉흥 연주에 대한 관심을 키우며, 전통 음악의 경계를 넘어 새로운 소리를 탐구하는 작곡가이자 연주자로 자리매김했습니다. 대금 연주자 송지윤 역시 한국 전통 음악을 기반으로 자신의 음악 세계를 확장해 온 아티스트입니다. 오랫동안 전통 대금을 익히고 프랑스로 건너가 실험 음악과 즉흥 음악에 몰두한 그녀는, 이제 대금을 통해 전통과 현대를 넘나드는 창작을 펼치고 있습니다.

"What is a beautiful sound?” Jeonghyeon Joo, Jiyun Song and Rachel Epperly’s ‘Unbeautified’ Haegeum performer, composer, and improviser Jeonghyeon Joo is an artist active between Seoul and Los Angeles. Since the age of ten, she has been playing the haegeum, a traditional Korean two-stringed fiddle, and has undergone rigorous classical training. However, her musical journey has not remained confined to tradition. During her undergraduate years, she developed a keen interest in improvisation, which led her to explore new sounds beyond the boundaries of traditional music. Today, she is recognized as both a composer and performer who expands the possibilities of the haegeum. Similarly, Daegeum performer Jiyun Song is an artist whose musical world has evolved beyond the foundation of traditional Korean music.
After years of mastering the Daegeum, she moved to France, where she immersed herself in experimental and improvisational music. Now back in Korea, she creates works that traverse the realms of tradition and modernity, exploring the daegeum's untapped potential. Her creative process involves breaking free from the traditional sound of the daegeum, embarking on a journey to discover new possibilities and her own unique voice. The performance ‘Unbeautified' embodies the contemplations and explorations of these two artists. As the title suggests, this performance poses a fundamental question: "What is a beautiful sound?" While many expect soft and melodious tones from traditional instruments, this concert challenges those expectations, delving deeply into the nature of sound and music itself.
