Cork are still the only county in the modern era to do the double. Teddy McCarthy will forever remain the only man, to win two all Ireland senior medals in the same year. We've only won four senior all Irelands in both codes since 1990, but we made history that year. You had the hurlers winning the all Ireland after being written off by all and sundry, and the footballers finally beating their bogey team Meath with 14 men. Corks double in 1990 may be equaled, but it will never be bettered in my opinion.
If anyone ever does do the double ever again, Cork will still be the only county with a dual all Ireland medal winner from the one year. The modern game has sadly rendered the dual player obsolete.
Such a huge achievement for one county to do this. (twice) Cant see it being done again. Only teams that have the resources to do it are Cork, Dublin and maybe Galway.
Offaly came close to the double back in the 80s. Galway are probably the most logical choice for a double in 2019 as both their Hurling and Football teams are loaded. But it’s incredibly hard to do.
Galway weren't helped in 2001 when some 'interesting' decisions were made V Tipperary. The papers of 1990 noted even more 'interesting' decisions in 1990. The most obvious was the failure to award a 70 when Martin Naughton's goal bound shot struck Ger Cunningham and was deflected wide. A puck out was awarded from which Cork scored. Bizarre.
Galway have a great record at making finals, but a not so good record at producing the goods in finals. You've only won 5 all Irelands in your history and lost a pile of other finals. That can't be all down to bad refereeing.
Did I understand when the Double was won, there was a Cork player who played in BOTH finals and won both-the only player to pull off that Double in the same year? I’ve been trying to compare that feat to U.S. sports and nothing comes to mind...
For me, Galway probably have the best chance of winning the double. Savage hard achievement though. As the saying goes, easier said than done. You couldn't begrudge any team doing it !!!
Those two finals couldn't have been more different, the hurling one of the best ever, but the football one of the worst ever. Also I can't see this happening again anytime soon, the closest anyone has came since was Cork again in 1999 when they won Liam but lost Sam.
Tommy Sugrue was the best referee, I think. Totally let the lads play but also got right in the thick of it when things got tight. I don't think there's been ref like him since.
What about the '88 final...? He gave Meath a free in the dying seconds which led to their equalising point when it was clear it should have been a free out...I always remember Barney Rock in the studio saying that no way was thar a free for Meath...and that he robbed Cork...no surprises that he never refereed another one...

Cork really are the greatest GAA county. The double proves this by a mile. And I say this as an Antrim man.
