  • Here are my scores (marked in brackets):
    Monday's shave:
    blade feel 0(1 2) 3 4
    comfort 0 1 2 (3 4)
    efficiency 0 1 2 3 (4)
    soreness 0 (1) 2 3 4
    (post shave)
    Wednesday's shave:
    blade feel 0(1 2) 3 4
    comfort 0 1 2 (3 4)
    efficiency 0 1 2 3 (4)
    soreness 0 (1) 2 3 4
    Last week, I wrote that the blade feel from the Maggard razor was just right, but I preferred the blade feel from this razor which I think was just a touch less; I think this is partly due to the different shape in the head and guard. I've marked it between a two and and a one. It was a very comfortable razor to shave with; I've scored it as a three, on the first pass and a four, on the second and third passes. It is definitely an efficient razor, giving a smooth shave. On Monday's shave I was BBS without any effort and on Wednesday I just missed that but I have still marked it as a four.
    The post shave soreness (razor burn) was pretty mild after the first shave; it settled down after 30 minutes or so. My second shave was much the same.

    Well Done! This series on slants is so enjoyable. I’m impressed by the performance you are getting from two inexpensive razors so far. Granted, an experienced operator is always at the core of a successful shave 😊! I’m already looking forward to your next Slant review. Take care & thanks!

      Excellent. Thank you for letting me know, it helps. The next one will be a little bit different - I shan't write anymore and give the game away. I still have some interesting information/questions to ponder about slant razors. Three more to go! Have a great weekend. Cheers.

    Great video!
    Love my German 37 and it is my go to razor at the moment. Very close and smooth, also goes well with the Razorock HD handle.
    I have also ordered a maggard slant to try as it is slightly more aggressive than the German 37. Will see if the maggard slant is better, or a bit too aggressive for me.
    All people who want to try a slant should give the German 37 a go. As it is well priced and great being a 3 piece razor, as you can try different handles with the head.

    Hi Mark- Very nice shave and razor review; thank you! Nice job with this razor and I appreciate your thoughts. Thanks also for the heads-up on the Dorco 301 blades; I just received a new packet to give them a try and will definitely take a good look at the end tabs when I use them. I hope there is a relaxing weekend schedule on the horizon for you and best wishes, as always, my friend!

    Another thorough and interesting examination. Just from my casual survey of online opinion, the German 37 has a lot of fans, whereas the Maggard slant seems to have a narrower following of those looking for a more aggressive slant--pretty much squares with your scoring of your shaves. A good weekend to you!

    • @FriendshipShaving
      @FriendshipShaving  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Good day. Thanks for looking at that, it's good to know that it kind of matches my scoring; I've found that very difficult to do you know and was concerned there might not be enough differences between the razors to show but it seems to be working okay, at the moment. Enjoy your weekend. Cheers.

    Hi Mark! I own one of these razors so I was glad to see you doing a video on it. This is my first slant razor and I bought it for the same reason that you mentioned. The machined flat head with that angle. To me it feels like a very aggressive razor and I am a little sore after a shave with it. I am still trying to figure out what blades I like in it. Great job on this video it was very informative.

    • @FriendshipShaving
      @FriendshipShaving  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks J. I think, even though I am trying to mark the razors that so far, there has been a little more soreness than with a de safety razor, although it was pretty mild, for me, with this razor. They seem to shave like a vintage se razor, which use thicker (more rigid) blades. Using different blades might be a good idea for this razor, it's an inexpensive way to change the shave, as you know. I'm wondering if a Voskhod or a Gillette black might work well.

  • @soncinr
    @soncinr 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Hello Mark, there is a difference in the gap, but it is compensated by less blade exposure on the wider end. At least that is what I have observed with my Merkur 39C, which shaves really well, but you really need to keep a light hand with it. Regards, Roberto

    • @FriendshipShaving
      @FriendshipShaving  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you, Roberto. I was just beginning to wonder if that might be what was happening. In that case, the guard is very cleverly designed to give a small blade gap and large (relatively) blade exposure at one end but even that up with a large blade gap and small blade exposure at the other end. Genius!

    Lovely shave Mark, hope you are keeping well.
    I love Wickham soaps. The Club Cola reminds me of summer days as a kid, getting Cola ice lollies off the Ice Cream van.
    Shame about the Dorco blades, I agree it is poor quality control. It would be interesting to hear if other subscribers who use these blades, have the same spurs on them.
    I got 25 Gillette Nacet blades last week, after watching many shaving videos that always highly praise them. I tried one last week in my R41. Very nice shave, and despite the aggressiveness of the R41, I found the blade smooth and no nicks or weepers. Seems a sharp, but at the same time a comfortable blade. Not Feather sharp, but a lot sharper than a lot of the other blades I've tried. Gonna try one in my Rockwell 6S for tomorrows shave. Might invest in a 100 if I continue to like them.

    Hi Mark, That razor head looks familiar to me. It seems to be the same as the Mercury 37c? I sold mine on and bought an old Hoffritz slant bar instead, which come in a nice chrome case but the head is almost the same as the 37 but without the grooves along the blade edge. I found the Hoffritz a slightly better shave.

    • @FriendshipShaving
      @FriendshipShaving  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Gordon. I imagine, from the name, that the Razorock 37c is a direct copy of the Merkur 37c. I believe Hoffritz were a New York retailer that sold rebranded Merkur razors. So that too, even though the shave is different, should be quite similar.

    ( LONG POST),,,,Another Awesome Video F.S.,,, I just received this RR Slant 37 razor in the mail today to add to my collection, but i have not used it yet and might be a little while till i do because I'm not up to par as far as my skin being use to an aggressive razor like a slant yet. but I wanted to have one and this particular RR-German 37 slant has such good reviews so I went with this one as my first to use and have in my razor collection...... With that said ,,,,,So after using this razor more than once your self how do you find the aggression of this razor to be... would you say on the high, middle or low end of the aggression scale in your opinion ???? & also maybe a little advise for user like myself who only have a couple of months of wet shaving with a safety razor under their belts,,,,, and want to try a slant razor for the first time ? I myself being in my mid 50's and getting older, im sure you know what i mean when i say it's a more of a course type of beard growth now then it was back in our 20's. Do you know what I mean by describing it that way with the coursness of the hair growth has gotten OR getting whiter or salt and pepper mix and the hais is now a thicker type of stubble. ,,,, Plus adding to that like so many others my skin has gotten more sensitive especially on the throat jaw line, mustach area now a days... I use to be able to keep a gotee for as long as wanted ,,,,but not any more because it just irritates my skin after about a week and itch and get red around my mouth. Yet when I was in my 20-30's I had a full beard for a couple of years and it did not bother me at all, It's funny but not today it seems my skin has changed and just gets irritated to easy from whisker growth after a few days of growth on my face now a days. (Sorry for such a long post ! )

    • @FriendshipShaving
      @FriendshipShaving  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Glenn, I don't mind a long post at all, mate 👍 I found it to be a great razor, it's well designed and I found the shape of the head to be really good in getting a very comfortable shave. If you look at the video description, I've marked the razor in terms of comfort, blade feel and effectiveness. To recap, I found the razor to be very effective indeed but also very comfortable. The post shave soreness was minimal - next to nothing.
      Your description of the issues you have with a more coarse growth and more sensitive, perhaps thinner, skin really hits the mark. That's exactly what is happening to me! When I tried to grow a goatee, it irritated the heck out me. I think you'll really like your new razor but you might try using it just on the first pass, if you're uncertain. Go for it, my friend. Just a quick note on the handle - I believe a heavier handle gives a slightly more aggressive shave, so you'll be able to play around with that too. Cheers. 🙂

    Hi Mark I asked razorock because the different blade gap here is the answer from the ceo. That is the design. It is very slight and done on purpose to give a more efficient shave.

  • @Warren.I
    @Warren.I 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Personally, and on behalf of all left-handed shavers, thanks for discussing the question, Mark. Your report on the patent claim suggests to me that the gap differential across the length of the blade, if any, has no bearing on performance. Maybe some slant aficionados will weigh in. Y did mention o n e important subject, with 2pc razors you're stuck with that handle. The most we change is the handle, isn't it... If vendors like Razorock can offer Merkur constructions, even 3pc, then I do see severe clouds approaching german industries. They + their employees being terrible burdened taxwise, obviously loosing competitiveness. An iirresponsible government under the helm of a chancellor (for far too long), herself a priest's daughter, raised in the communist GDR, how silly can a country be guided. Congrats for yr even further improving vids, with more n more detailed facts, everyone sure does appreciate. Cheers, as alw fm the Lion City, Achim.
