How to make a blood smear

How to make the perfect blood smear. This is much more challenging for anaemic patients (as we see in this sample), but I find that using this technique we get a perfect smear almost every time. You will notice I hold the slide with most of my fingers to keep it secure, and hold down the bottom slide with the pointer finger of my non-dominant hand.

A blood smear should be made immediately after taking blood and evaluated whenever a haematology is run or submitted. Good quality frosted slides also go a long way as they often have a lot less grit. Let me know if you have any questions about this technique!
